ORCHESTRA CARRIES ON LEGACY OF JAZZ ROYALTY
BY THE NEWS STAFF
The Historic Fox Theatre in Hutchinson is kicking off its newest season with a concert by the Count Basie Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Although William James “Count” Basie died in 1984, his orchestra – founded in 1935 in Kansas City – has continued to perform, releasing 17 albums since Basie’s death and performing numerous concerts. In its 80year history, the Count Basie Orchestra has won well over a dozen Grammy awards. Scotty Barnhart has been director of the orchestra since September 2013. He also is a professor of jazz trumpet and jazz studies at Florida State University and an author. In addition to his work with the Count Basie Orchestra, Barnhart’s list of collaborations is a who’s who of musicians: Wynton Marsalis, Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin and the Temptations, to name just a few. Barnhart said the orchestra plays music from across all its eras, from Basie originals from 1935 up to and
including new compositions. The orchestra tours 20 to 25 weeks a year, with the number of concerts per week varying, he said. Guest vocalist Carmen Bradford was hired by Basie in 1983 and was the orchestra’s featured vocalist for nine years. She has since performed and recorded with a number of notables, including Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, and worked with stage and film productions. Barnhart called Bradford one of the best in the world, with a phenomenal combination of vocal power, temperament and knowledge of how to sing with a big band. Basie was born in 1904 in Red Bank, New Jersey, and began his music career playing piano and organ for silent movies before getting into touring ensembles. With his orchestra, he became one of the preeminent names in big-band jazz swing, earning the “Count” moniker. Tickets for the Count Basie Orchestra concert cost $40 to $50 and are available at the Fox Theatre’s box office, 18 E. First Ave., or at (620) 663-1981.
The Count Basie Orchestra will perform Friday at Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre.
