‘LEFTOVERS’ A THOUGHT-PROVOKING DRAMA Based on the 2011 novel of the same name by series co-creator Tom Perrotta, “The Leftovers” is one of the best new shows of 2014. Recently renewed for a second season, the show is filled with great writing and excellent performances. The show is set three years after a rapture-like event known as the “Great Departure,” which made 2 percent of the world’s population suddenly and mysteriously disappear. The show follows the small town of Mapleton, New York, where some citizens attempt to move on from this epic event while other forces in the town try to make sure no one ever forgets what happened. The cast here are all well suited for their roles with several standout performances. Police chief Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux), whose family was irreparably damaged during the departure, is starting to worry that he may be losing his mind. Matt Jamison (Christopher Eccleston) is a

reverend who simply cannot accept that he did not leave during the departure. His sister Nora (Carrie Coon), who lost her entire family in the departure, tries to deal with her lingering grief. Laurie Garvey (Amy Brennemen), Kevin’s

The Associated Press

estranged wife, is now a member of the Guilty Remnant, one of the many strange cults that has appeared since the departure. The rest of the cast also is wonderful, with a special nod to guest star Scott Glenn as Kevin’s father in one

of the series’ most interesting roles. Of course, the best performances mean nothing without well written dialogue, and “The Leftovers” has that in spades. Credit must go to co-creator Damon Lindelof, who co-wrote each of the series’ first 10 episodes. Each episode is filled with believable language and emotion; nothing here feels forced. The music also is very fitting – an instrumental version of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters,” used to great effect in the season finale, springs to mind especially. After the quality of this season, I’m left feeling very excited for season two of this show. My hope is that it doesn’t hit the sophomore slump of many TV shows and manages to maintain its level of quality writing and acting for its entire run. A great show I recommend very highly: three and a half stars out of four. ALEX KEEL

RENAME THIS ONE ‘NO GOOD MOVIE’ I know a bad movie when I see it, and “No Good Deed” could easily be retitled “No Good Movie.” I review it only in the interest of you avoiding any temptation to throw down good money for a really bad motion picture. While there is a degree of suspense and a somewhat unexpected plot twist, this very dark, violent, uninspiring and

mostly predictable film produces no new ground but has an abundance of shallowness. It also makes a mockery out of the PG-13 rating. There is so much violence sprinkled with a dash of sex that it rates an R, and no one in their right mind would take a child or even a teenager into this frightening world of an escaped serial killer who terrorizes a woman left home alone

with her two small children. I’m totally unfamiliar with the actors, who do a fair job with a flawed and mostly unrealistic script. While called a “thriller,” it certainly lacks the ingredients I require for this type of a movie. “No Good Deed” gets one star, which is probably more than it deserves. DAN DEMING Hutchinson

WHAT A COMEDIAN! YAKOV TO HIT THE FOX BY THE BEE STAFF

Russian-born entertainer Yakov Smirnoff is making a stop in Hutchinson on Saturday to open the Historic Fox Theatre’s 2014-15 performance series as part of his “Happily Ever Laughter Tour.” In this new national tour, Smirnoff delivers his laughter-filled philosophy on life, love, family and country. The New York Times called his one-man show “warmhearted, delightful and splendidly funny.” Smirnoff has been in the entertainment scene since the late 1970s. He was a regular guest star on the award-winning NBC sitcom “Night Court” and has been a popular guest on numerous TV shows such as “The Tonight Show.” He also has been seen on HBO and on his critically acclaimed Showtime special. Smirnoff also has co-starred in movies, joining the late

First Ave. COST: $35, $40 and $45 Tickets can be purchased online at www.hutchinsonfox.com, by phone at (877) FOX-SHOW or at the box office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m weekdays and at 4 p.m. the day of the show. Robin Williams in “Moscow on the Hudson,” Tom Hanks in “The Money Pit,” Meryl Steep and Jack Nicholson in “Heartburn” and Richard Pryor in “Brewster’s Millions.” He was invited to perform at the White House for several presidents and guests. President Ronald Reagan called Smirnoff a “national treasure.” Since 1992, Smirnoff has performed at his own theater

in Branson, Missouri, where he has entertained over 4 million visitors and produced several award-winning shows. His comedic style is grounded in his mission statement “to experience happiness and teach it to the world with passion through comedy and sensitivity.” In his newest endeavor, Smirnoff takes his comedy to a new level to showcase laughter’s effects on relationships and envisions a world where sadness and tears are replaced with love and laughter. Yakov will be the first of eight shows in the Fox’s 20142015 “Opening New Doors” season lineup, which also includes “The Texas Gypsies” on Oct. 10, legendary singersongwriter Rosanne Cash on Nov. 8, and a cappella supergroup Rockapella on Dec. 4. His funny philosophies also can be heard at Missouri State University and Drury University, where Smirnoff is

SMIRNOFF IS A CAN’T-MISS ENTERTAINER Hutchinson residents, along with others in the area, have a real treat in store: It soon will be time to laugh your “Yak-off.” One of the frustrations about writing reviews of Fox Theatre shows is that most are penned after the performances and our readers don’t have a chance to know what outstanding entertainment is in Hutchinson so you can plan to attend. Some complain there is nothing to do in Hutch at a reasonable price, but the arrival of Yakov Smirnoff at the Fox will soon dispel that proposition. Those of you under 40 may not be familiar with Smirnoff, but most of the older crowd will remember a very popular Russian-born comedian who was well-known on television and radio several decades ago. In more recent times, Smirnoff has settled in Branson, Missouri, at his own impressive theater where he is annually among

the top attractions. I have long advocated tapping into the abundant Branson talent for Fox shows and it is beginning to happen. We are quite fortunate to get his newest endeavor, “The Happily Ever Laughter Tour,” in Hutchinson, and good seats for as little as $35 are still available at the Fox box office. An American citizen for many years, Smirnoff is just plain hilarious. It’s good, clean humor that you don’t find that often in today’s entertainment world. President Ronald Regan called Smirnoff “a national treasure,” and regardless of your politics, I’m betting you will agree. He has performed at the White House for several presidents, appeared in several movies and was a mainstay during 1970s entertainment, including numerous appearances on “The Tonight Show.” His Russian dialogue is easy to follow and adds to the atmosphere.

Not just a funny guy, Smirnoff also is a professor at Missouri State University and Drury University who talks with students about love and laughter. He’s also a best-selling author and holds a master’s degree in psychology from an Ivy League school, the University of Pennsylvania. “Fall in love and laughter all over again” is a common theme as he visits about relationships and humor. His on-stage act is most personable and he quickly draws his audience into the one-man conversation. I’ve seen Yakov Smirnoff several times, have never been disappointed, and can’t wait to hear him again. It’s highly unlikely you will be disappointed by investing in tickets for this exceptional Fox Theatre season opener, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Don’t let this attraction pass you by. GROWING CONCERT SERIES HAS ‘CAUSE’ FOR THANKS BY RYAN CHRISTNER For The Bee

ryanc@hutchnews.com The formula was simple: Invite a couple of local bands to perform live and entice those who show up to listen into buying some grilled grub to benefit a participating nonprofit or community entity. It was called Concerts for the Cause, and it has taken Hutchinson by storm since it was introduced last year. Created by James Lowe and Steve Lovesee, and now supported by an eight-member board, the event has drawn hundreds of spectators to Avenue A Park on Saturdays during the summer to listen to an increasingly diverse list of musical artists. To pay back those who have supported the concert series through thick and

thin, rain or shine, a special “Thank You” concert has been organized for Saturday featuring the music of Katie Berry, Soapbox Troubadors and Morgan Wilk. Food and drinks will be distributed for free, and donations will be taken for Tom and Jessica Smalling, whose 3-month-old son, Liam, died last month from sudden infant death syndrome. The event caps a busy summer, during which scores of area musicians performed during about two dozen free concerts. But that’s not the extent of the organization’s reach. Board members say Concerts for the Cause, which received nonprofit status in January, is attempting to expand into other areas, with future events being planned in Wichita and Junction City.

FYI Organizations that have benefitted from money raised during Concerts for the Cause events include: 4-H American Cancer Society American Red Cross Big Brothers Big Sisters Boys & Girls Clubs of Hutchinson CatSNIP Fund First Call for Help Hutchinson Theatre Guild Hutchinson Zoo Interfaith Housing Make A Wish Foundation Muscular Dystrophy Association Reno County Food Bank Salvation Army Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Center Special Olympics St. Vincent de Paul Society Sterling Autism Awareness The Hub Christian Ministries Center Third Thursday OO OO OO OO OO

CFTC also is branching out into other entertainment genres – a “Comedy for the Cause” show is planned for Oct. 25 at Memorial Hall – in addition to its music concerts, which have moved beyond just the summer series. This year, special events were held in January, March, April, May and June. From Oct. 3-5, CFTC is partnering with the Hutchinson Rod Run to provide music across all three days. “We haven’t stopped since November” of 2013, said Mitch Bass, vice president of the CFTC board. Lowe, who operates the independent KJAG radio broadcasting station under the moniker Jiggy Jaguar, said CFTC’s reputation is beginning to spread. For the CFTC “School’s Out Bash” festival in May, Lowe said Des Moines, Iowa,

IF YOU GO WHAT: Concerts for the Cause Thank You Concert WHEN: 7 p.m. Saturday WHERE: Avenue A Park COST: Free (food and drinks will be given away at no charge) For more information, visit the group’s Facebook page or go to www.concertsforthecause.com. heavy metal band Apathy Syndrome volunteered to perform, and they even brought a van full of their fans to the Hutchinson show. Members of the Mississippi rock group Saving Abel, which has played with the likes of Nickelback, Hinder, Papa Roach, Creed, Buckcherry and Drowning Pool, also recently reached out to the board because it

had heard what was happening in town. Concession sales at the weekly summer concerts brought in between $200 and $400 for each participating group, Lowe estimated, for an approximate total of $10,000 raised during all CFTC events over the past two years. That success means that sponsors and musicians are now “knocking down our door” to get involved, said board member Mike Klaers, who also owns The Rusty Needle sports bar. “I think when you surround yourself with great people, you’re going to get great results,” Klaers said. That’s allowed for a bit of flexibility on the rare occasions something goes awry at a concert, such as when a performer or nonprofit is unable to fulfill its obligation to attend. The more people who want to participate, the less stressful it becomes to fill a last-minute vacancy. “This year, we have contingency plans,” Bass said. “Last year, it was ‘Scramble City.’ ” CFTC also is preparing to begin accepting submissions for a scholarship it started

for graduating Reno County seniors who plan to study music. “That’s just another way that we’re trying to give back to the community,” Bass said. The public has taken notice of their efforts, too. At its Aug. 9 concert, CFTC saw record attendance and money raised for that night’s charity, the St. Vincent de Paul Society. And board members say it isn’t uncommon anymore to see out-of-county license plates at the summer shows. “It’s not all Hutch people that are getting to enjoy the show,” Jerry Rempe said. As a result of all that exposure, “The expectation level has been set now,” Klaers said. CFTC slowly has been cultivating its brand, he added, and the board must be careful before attaching its name to any event that isn’t of the highest quality. “If I don’t feel comfortable putting our brand on something, I’m not going to do it,” Klaers said.

a long-hidden family secret. It will be performed Nov. 6-9 and 13-16. Roles are available for two male and three female actors, ranging in suggested age from 20 to 60. Auditions, during which actors will read short scenes

from the play, are from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Actors are asked to bring copies of their schedules and conflicts so director Charles Johnston knows when they are available to rehearse.

A cast list will be posted no later than noon Monday at Stage 9 and online at www. hutchtheatre.com and on the guild’s Facebook page. More information is available by emailing director Charles Johnston at charlesajohnston@gmail.com.

SPACE MUSEUM IS HELPING SHOW START WITH A ‘BANG’

BY THE BEE STAF F

Call it the “Big-Screen Bazinga Bonanza.” For a second-straight year, the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center is hosting a premiere party for “The Big Bang Theory,” the popular CBS sitcom about socially awkward physicists that is beginning its eighth season. The one-hour premiere begins at 7 p.m. Monday in the Carey Digital Dome Theatre and is free to attend. However, additional activities are planned for fans who wish to geek out to a higher degree. Starting at 6 p.m., the “Big Bang” party will offer trivia and costume contests, door prizes and a chance to interact with KWCH and KSCW personalities prior to the show. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased in advance at (620) 665-9312 or (800) 397-0330, ext. 312. The nerdy comedy has been popular among Cosmosphere staff since 2012, when the show’s producers contacted the local

space museum for assistance filming scenes in which the character Howard Wolowitz, played by Simon Helberg, was sent to space. Like the Cosmosphere, the TV show places an emphasis on the value of education and is credited with inspiring future generations of innovators and explorers. The Cosmosphere hosted a premiere party last year for the show’s seventh season, as well as a special event for the finale of another CBS comedy, “How I Met Your Mother,” in March. “Everyone had such a great time at the Premiere Party last year, we’re thrilled to be hosting it again,” Becky Christner, Cosmosphere marketing and public relations manager, said in a press release. “It’s a great way for fans to get together and share their enthusiasm for the show and have a little fun. We’re pleased to have such great friendships with community partners like KWCH that make these events possible.” “The Big Bang Theory” is rated TV-14 and airs Mondays at 7 p.m. on CBS.
