2. Profiad Ni guide 18-26 May 2013

Welcome Profiad Ni is a week of free events across 18-26 of May 2013 showcasing what is being done to make Snowdonia stronger. Everyone is beginning to notice that it’s getting harder to pay for heating, electricity and transport and, as the prices of oil and gas go up, food is getting more expensive too because it costs more for supermarkets to get it here. Families and organisations across Snowdonia are taking the initiative to become more efficient, switch to renewable forms of energy and use local products and services which demand less energy to transport and provide our communities with jobs. Profiad Ni’s aim is to share this knowledge through free events so that everyone in Snowdonia has the chance to find out what is possible, from people in our own communities. Our main event is the Open Doors drop-in trail (24th - 26th of May) - see how it works on page 6 & 7. The week leading up to Open Doors is jam packed with workshops, tours and talks - check out the timetable on pages 29-38.

Open Doors Trail

Friday 24 to Sunday 26 of May Learn about smart energy use without the hard sell Profiad Ni’s free Open Doors drop-in event gives visitors access to homes and other buildings where energy issues are being addressed so that you can talk directly to local people who live and work there without anyone trying to sell you anything.

See working examples of:

· Renewable electricity technology (e.g. solar and hydro power) · Ground and air sourced heat pumps · Biomass heating systems like wood pellet and log boilers · Solar hot water systems · Productive gardens · Local and recycled building materials put to use · Insulation on solid stone walls – external and internal · Low impact buildings Have a one-to-one chat with the people that use these things about:

· How much did you pay? · Who installed it? · Has it made a difference? · Are there any grants to help with costs? · What would you do differently if you could start again? 6. Profiad Ni guide 18-26 May 2013

How it works:

Pages 8-28 list all the buildings which you can see as part of the Trail. There’s information about what to see in each building, their opening times and how to get there. Using the map on pages 48-49, plan your route and off you go! Fact sheets with further information about each property are available to download from www.ProfiadNi.org, or we’ll be happy to post you a copy if you let us know which ones you want by emailing post@ ProfiadNi.org or phoning 07876 238 741.

Profiad Ni is very grateful to all our exhibitors and facilitators who are giving their time to make the project possible. Please participate with respect and be sure to check each property’s opening times before planning your route!

Gwynedd Werdd Leading Sponsor Gwynedd Council has a vision that Gwynedd will thrive in the future – with economically and socially enterprising and vibrant sustainable communities, where the Welsh language is central to its prosperity, and where people of all ages can take advantage of new opportunities and choose to stay in the area to live and work. Gwynedd Werdd has been developed as part of a package of programmes to achieve this vision. Gwynedd Werdd’s aim as part of the wider vision is to promote “more self-sufficient sustainable communities, maximising the economic benefits from natural resources, local produce and services.” This is a long term aim, with recent action focussing on renewable energy. Gwynedd Werdd has studied the potential for producing renewable energy by making the most of the natural resources throughout the county. This has allowed us to understand: • what resources are available and where • what the economic benefits are if we utilise this potential • and the barriers that need to be overcome to make the most of the available resources. The Gwynedd Werdd Scoping Study has highlighted the potential to deploy over 110 Megawatts by 2017. This could create up to 160 operational jobs and inject £16m into the local economy. www.ProfiadNi.org 41.

To make the most of these opportunities Gwynedd Werdd, in partnership with the Carbon Trust Wales, is now gathering further information about sites for hydropower production plus there is work being completed into the development of a sustainable local supply chain for wood fuel. We are working with Bangor University and the Llyˆn Peninsula community group YnNi Llyˆn to better understand the tidal resource at the end of the peninsula. Gwynedd Werdd alongside Anglesey Energy Island is also working with local colleges to ensure that training needed to make the most of renewable energy is available. Gwynedd Werdd is making the most of renewable energy production initiatives to the economy and people of Gwynedd.

The Energy Saving Trust, Wales The Energy Saving Trust in Wales are delighted to support this project. The challenge facing us all is how to reduce carbon emissions, develop sustainable sources of energy and make water use sustainable. The Energy Saving Trust is committed to helping Wales to meet this challenge. We have one clear goal – to help people save energy, every day. To achieve this aim it’s vital that we offer an impartial perspective based on empirical evidence: one that’s respected by individuals, government and commercial organisations alike. Our status allows us to protect consumer interests while raising standards in sustainability and energy efficiency. The energy we use every day, at home and when travelling, mostly comes from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. This produces carbon dioxide, one of the most significant greenhouse gases that cause climate change.

GreenWood Forest Park - North Wales’ leading Family Attraction The story began in 1993 when husband and wife Stephen and Andrea Bristow started “The GreenWood Centre”. At that time all that stood was the Great Hall, with the Park known as an education centre teaching people about nature and wildlife. Fast forward 20 years and it has become what we know today as GreenWood Forest Park, a great place for family days out, welcoming thousands of visitors each year. GreenWood Forest Park’s landscape may have changed but the ethos behind the company has not. The owners and team are still passionate about being kind to nature and to this day, all the rides and activities require your energy to make them work, including the world famous people powered roller-coaster. Every year, consistent efforts are made to minimise the negative effects on the environment and maximise the positive. A few facts about how GreenWood contributes to being sustainable; • Many of its food and drink containers are biodegradable. • Its used cooking oil is processed into biodiesel.

46. Profiad Ni guide 18-26 May 2013

• Its cardboard goes to an Anglesey company for recycling. • All of its office waste paper is recycled. It has planted an average of over 500 trees each year since opening in 1993. The total number to date is over 10,000 trees, and it continues to plant more every year. It harvests 130 cubic metres of rainwater each year and uses it for flushing toilets. Co-owner Andrea Bristow commented “One of the favorite activities is the BareFoot Trail. I like the way it is a simple idea, can be copied at home in the garden and makes you feel invigorated. This attraction was our oldest son Daniel’s idea and has been much loved and used by the public - even in February”.

Gritten Ecology Gritten Ecology specialises in environmental surveys for runof-river hydro-electric schemes and other renewable energy projects. Both the Local Planning Authorities and Natural Resources Wales require detailed ecological surveys to accompany all Abstraction Licence and Planning Applications. Gritten Ecology is well placed to organise and carry out these surveys to a proven standard that is acceptable to these authorities.
