Huws Gray has recently invested in the latest Uni-Roll 750 joist press at their Llangefni Truss & Easi-joist manufacturing plant. This is following their recent investment in the extension of the truss press to 36m and investing in a randek saw in 2015. Osian Jones (Truss & Easi-Joist Centre Manager) commented: “The new Uni-Roll 750 press is capable of producing easi-joists up to 12m in length, an increase
of 4 metres, greatly improving the range of easi-joist solutions for our customers. “The new Uni-Roll 750 press greatly increases the production capacity of easi-joists, meaning we will be able to pass on the time saving to our customers. We therefore aim to offer easi-joists in a guaranteed 10 day or less delivery service from confirmations of order and site specifications.”

Huws Gray acquires Shropshire Building Supplies
Pictured: Newport branch.
Rapidly growing independent merchant Huws Gray has acquired Shropshire Building Supplies. The Anglesey-headquartered business has added to its expanding portfolio the five Shropshire Building Supplies branches: Leebotwood, Newport, Ludlow, Shrewsbury (Battlefield) and Shrewsbury Plumbing Outlet. Shropshire Building Supplies are an experienced family business, established in 1977, and known as one of the most respected independent suppliers of building materials in the region. This acquisition makes a great
addition to the existing Huws Gray branches in Shrewsbury, Telford and links up geographically with branches in other regions. The recent acquisition is Huws Gray’s largest acquisition to date and takes the total number of Huws Gray branches to 53 and the number of employees to nearly 700, this makes it six acquisitions in the last 6 months and 11 sites since September 2015. Terry Owen (Managing Director) commented: “As a company we are always looking to move forward and this recent acquisition offers new challenges and exciting
opportunities for everyone. We are extremely privileged to be in a position to acquire such a well-respected independent merchant and we would like to thank Ian Beaver for his cooperation during this acquisition. We have known the family for a number of years and formed a great relationship. We’re delighted to have completed the deal and we’re looking forward to working with the existing teams at all 5 branches to help continue their success. The combined knowledge and experience of Shropshire Building Supplies and Huws Gray employees will benefit all our branches.” Ian Beaver (SBS Managing Director) commented: “This is the right time to hand over the reins of Shropshire Building Supplies to Huws Gray. Since 1977 we’ve built something very special in the area and we’re very proud. I would like to thank all the employees for their hard work over the years and wish them the continued success with Huws Gray. It was important for SBS to find a likeminded progressive business to acquire us and we are delighted to be able to secure a deal with Huws Gray who will take the company to the next level.”
Huws Gray employees take to the skies

Four brave Huws Gray employees recently took on a tandem sky dive at Whitchurch to raise funds for Hope House Children’s Hospice. Among the group were Michael Jones, Paul Rowlands and Dale Rowlands all from the Gaerwen branch. A team spokesperson commented: “Free-falling from 10,000 feet was incredible. The weather was great and it was clear so we could see everything. The nervy bit was sitting on the edge of the plane door ready to go out. Thanks to everyone for their support.” Check out Huws Gray’s blog for all of Huws Gray’s upcoming events.

In loving memory of Elfed Hughes Later in his career, Mr. Hughes moved to Head Office in 2005 to look after different operations. He played a major role in developing and monitoring certain departments such as transport, health and safety, recruitment and purchase ledger. He played a key role in ensuring these departments ran smoothly as the company expanded over the years.
Huws Gray Director Elfed Hughes sadly passed away recently at the age of 55 after a short battle with illness only a few weeks after he had retired. Mr. Hughes joined Huws Gray in 1992 as a branch manager at the first branch in Gaerwen on Anglesey. He excelled in his role and helped the company expand when he became an area manager to look after several different branches in the area.
Terry Owen (Huws Gray Managing Director) commented: “Elfed’s contribution over the 24 years he was with us was exceptional. Huws Gray would not be where it is today without him. His willingness to take responsibility combined with passion, determination and honesty made him a very special person. Elfed’s motto has always been to keep things simple, and do things the right way which has served us well and has given Huws Gray a solid foundation to grow the company. ”As well as a co-worker we were very close friends and we’ve shared lots of funny moments together. We will continue to carry out his beliefs and high standards going forward. He will be sorely missed by all of us
Huws Gray cyclists complete Anglesey to Cardiff in 1 day
The team were successful last year when they completed the challenge in 2 days, but they wanted to go a step further this year and complete the 180-mile bike ride in only 1 day. Amongst the team were employees from the Gaerwen branch and Cefni Distribution Centre that’s 28 based in Llangefni (Anglesey).
Mr. Hughes was known by many colleagues, friends and families as a ‘true gentleman’ and a family man. He was a proud husband to Fflur, father to Nia, Dafydd and Sion and grandfather to Nedw and Dyddgu and he will be sorely missed. Nia is a devoted housewife and Mr. Hughes’s sons both work at Huws Gray with Dafydd working in the marketing department and Sion working at the Bangor branch.
In his spare time Mr. Hughes thoroughly enjoyed golf, walking, holidays, spending time with family and dining out. One of his close friends referred to him as a ‘cracking bloke’. Mr. Hughes was a keen golfer and played at Anglesey Golf Club and in their tribute, the club captain said: “He was a very positive, keen and supportive
member of the club. His links with work enabled him to support the club with a number of past events bringing much income to AGC as well as many fond memories. A people’s man, a great sportsman and a dedicated and loyal family man who put others first in his life. He will be greatly missed by us all at AGC.” Dafydd Hughes (Mr. Hughes’s son) concluded: “He was a very supportive, caring father and a best friend. He always took care of us as a family and supported us through happy and challenging times alike. We are lucky to have had such a special father and have so many happy memories together as a family, on nights out, in work and on the golf course. These memories will stay with me forever, and although it’s a huge hole that will never be filled, he will forever hold a special place in all our hearts.”

The Huws Gray raft team took to the straits again this year to raise essential funds for Hope House Children’s Hospice. Amongst the group were employees from the Gaerwen branch and Head Office. The team completed the race successfully going from Felinheli (Gwynedd) to Menai Bridge (Anglesey) on the majestic Menai Straits. The team came in 7th place with an impressive time of 1 hr 15 mins. A team spokesperson commented on the event: “We had a fantastic time, the weather was great and we all pulled together to reach Menai
Bridge in a good time. It was a lot harder than what we imagined but we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Huge thanks to everyone who supported us. We’re delighted we can support such a worthwhile cause.” The teams were fundraising for Hope House Children’s hospice, a fantastic cause that provide specialist nursing care and support to life-limited children, young people and young adults from Shropshire, Cheshire, North and Mid Wales.
