Advanced Graphic Design Fall 2015 Foreword By Stacy Asher Assistant Professor of Art In the Fall of 2015, the Advanced Graphic Design course at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln engaged in research about the role of design in creating social change. This course was an investigation of graphic design driven by research. Projects were socially and civically engaged, and focused on the production of communication systems, investigating history and theory of graphic design for social change, and the publishing of self authored work. Collaborative exercises and activities created an understanding of identity systems, social values and how to promote “justice for all� through visual communications. Deliverables for the course consisted of designed artifacts that documented, reflected, analyzed, and synthesized design research.
The first half of the course integrated the series of exhibitions, lectures and presentations relating to the topic of art/ design for social justice that occurred on campus through October. The second half centered around publication and experiential design, and the development of identity systems. The course outcomes provided opportunity for students to be innovative, culturally critical and potentially create social change. The purpose of this book is to show case my works in the Advance Graphic Design class. Beside that,this book also included all the activities that I participated in the class.

However, the concept of the quote actually has the opposite meaning of Lincoln’s quote. I feel like the word still have a lot of malice. One of the worth mentioning example is the murder of president Lincoln.

This poster was created to remind about a problem that is very popular nowadays , which is bullying. Bullying is most happened among children and teenager . However, it happen to adult too, but not that obvious. From this poster, there are two thing that I want to say: child abuse cause bully, and bystander can help end the bullying. This poster was designed with the help of the workshop with Justin Kemerling.

“To Unite the Earth, Connect It” After 70th session of United Nation, world leaders signed off the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In the agenda, there are 17 goals and 169 targets; one of them is a commitment to provide Internet connectivity for everyone by 2020. Bono and Mark Zuckerberg get together and wrote an article about the target. The title for this stamp plate was taken from the article.
in Ethiopia and Tanzania, farmers can use the Internet to check for better price. The examples keep going on. Another great example for this is the Syrian refugees whose left behind use smart phone to communicate with their love one across the border. Internet definitely useful for everyone, and as the article 27 in human right wrote: “Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.”Everyone deserves to be able to connect to the Internet.

Seed volume 7 number 9 Magazine The Seed magazine have one of the most beautiful magazine that I saw in all of the Social Justice’s magazine. I really like the way that the Seed design were different for every issue. Every magazine cover is like an artwork itself. Although the cover is really nice, but it is not what I like the most in the magazine. When I was looking through the Seed volume 7 number 9, there are an article on page 6 that I really like, mostly because of the poems in the article, but the illustration is pretty nice too. It really interesting to see the design of these underground back then, since the design is really different from today. Today there are a lot of rules, everything have to follow a grid, and there is always a system in design. When I look at this article, I only see the basic grid, which is made up by a square which is a frame and two line that divide the design into four section. The
spacing of the objects were poorly placing in my opinion. For example, “Chapter Two” poem’s third line was touching the illustration, and it was really close to the horizontal line. In addition, the illustration is really loose too. Overall, the page look like it was hand sketched. The only thing that look mechanical is the typeface of the poems. I feels like the designer was hand sketch the layout and illustration, and then print the poems on top of it. About the connection of the illustration and the poems, they are really go well with each other. Without the illustration, it would be hard for you to understand the poems, since the poem preference the illustration. The Illustration really show us what the poems really mean. For example, the first illustration was about a school, which look like a prison, just like what was talked about in the first poem.

“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood” Fred Rogers Play is really important for the children, but it is important for the grown up too. We always learn something when we are playing. and for grow up, sometime work can be playing too. in addition, if playing help you learn new thing and make you happy, then why don’t you keep playing? This box is a way to ask that question.

Musics for the Box
The musics from this box are from my classmate. Before I finish building the box, I email everyone the songs that make them that happy when they listened to. These songs don’t have to be songs about happiness. The point of doing this is that I tried to send out a message that, you should keep playing things that make you happy, doesn’t matter what they are.
