WILLIAM MORRIS - BIOGRAPHY

W

illiam Morris was born in 1834 in Walthamstow, England to a wealthy family. He was the son of William Morris and Emma Morris. His father, was a well-known stockbroker in London during that time, and his mother, was a music teacher in Worcrester. Growing up in a middle-class family, Morris had unlimited support from his family in terms of finance and education. Under the influence of his father, Morris attended Marlborough public school. It was designed for people who wanted to work in the business or finance industry. When Morris turned 19, he attended Exeter College, Oxford. This was an important turning point of his later career. Instead of became a clergyman like what he and his family expected, he showed more interest in art and design. During his time in Oxford, he met Edward Burne-Jones, a fellow student. The pair later became best friends and colleagues. Despite the fact that both Morris and Burne-Jones stayed in Oxford and intended to become priests, the pair found themselves immersed in the art world. A whole new world was opened for the two young emerging artists after their trip to France in 1855.

very moment the patches of green grew bigger ancd the patches of spow grew smaller. Every moment more and more of thec trees shook off their robes of snow. Soon, wherever you looked, instead of white shapes you saw the dark green of firs or the black prickly branches of bare oaks and beeches and elms. Then the mist turned from white to gold and presently cleared away altogether. Shafts of delicious sunlight struck down on to the forest floor and overhead you could see a blue sky between the tree tops.    There was no trace of the fog now. The sky became bluer and bluer, and now there were white clouds hurrying across it from time to time. In the wide glades there were primroses. CA light breeze sprang up which scattered drops of moisture from the swaying branches and carried cool, delicious scents against the faces of the travellers. The trees begacn to come fully alive. CThe larches and bircheswere covered with green, the laburnums with gold. Soon the beech trees had put forth their delicate, transparent leaves. As the travellers walked under them the light also became green. A bee buzzed across their pathc.
