Come In!
America’s leading early-childhood magazine is now in India!
Fun in the Rain This month, we celebrate the change in season with our monsoon stories that are about having fun in the rain. After the scorching summer heat, with temperatures soaring above 40° C across India, rains are welcomed. But soon, kids realize there are a lot of thing they can’t do—like playing outside or staying dry. If you live along the coasts, then dampness and the continuous rains can make kids edgy. In “Rain is Fun” (pages 20 to 23), Meera and Kiran, along with their friends, realize that there are many games that they can play when its rains. Playing ‘Splish Splosh’ or letting paper boats float along the small streams are definitely some of them. Similarly, in “Staying Dry” (pages 12 to 15), Della’s friends want to abandon their plans for the day because it’s raining. But Della isn’t so easily discouraged. She encourages her friends to buy umbrellas so they can go to the lake as planned. Standing in water holding umbrellas? How silly! Or is it? It might make good sense to your child. Because the flamingos act like people, maybe they feel and think like people, too. I hope you will enjoy sharing both these stories with your little ones and make the rains a fun family season.

Della and her friends are getting ready to go to the lake. But it’s raining! “Oh no! Look at all that rain!” says Lucy. “We can’t go to the lake. We will get wet!” says Molly. Della looks out the window. She sees a street vendor selling umbrellas. “Come on,” she says. “We can buy umbrellas. Then we won’t get wet.” 12

Meera and Kiran Meera and Kiran’s friends, Nikhil and Tanya, had come over to play. “Come, let’s play outside!” said Meera. When they opened the door, it was raining. “Oh no!” the children said.
“Why aren’t you playing outside?” Pa asked. “When the rain stops, we will play outside,” Meera said. “When the rain stops, we will play football,” Tanya said.
“When the rain stops, Ginger will run,” Kiran said. “When the rain stops, we will play hide-and-seek!” Nikhil said. “When the rain stops, we will have fun!” Meera said. “But you don’t have to wait for the rain to stop to have fun!” Pa said. “Let’s first put on our raincoats,” Pa continued. The kids wore their raincoats while Pa covered Ginger with a plastic bag. Ginger looked funny! July 2017

The garden was full of puddles. “Let’s play Splish-Splosh!” Pa said. They had to jump into the puddles and see who could splash the most! Meera, Kiran, Nikhil, and Tanya jumped into a puddle each. Water splashed everywhere. What a fun game that was!
Pa made paper boats. When he put them in the water flowing down the garden, the boats raced away. The children ran after them. Only Ginger caught one of them! 22

“Children!” Ma called. “Come and eat!” As soon as they finished eating, they jumped up. “Where are you going?” Ma asked. “To play in the rain,” they said. “But it has stopped raining,” Ma said. “Oh no!” the children said and sat down. “Why aren’t you playing?” Pa asked. “When it starts raining again, we will! It’ so much fun!” the kids said. Ginger barked. Yes, playing in the rain was fun!
