July 7 – September 18
Dear Friends, We are thrilled to welcome you to our thirty-sixth season and the first in what will soon be our first-ever permanent home. It’s the dawn of a bright new chapter for HVSF, a moment in which the rich legacies of our past fuse with the possibility of our future.
“Improvisatory, frolicsome, and of our time.” Jesse Green, The New York Times
After all, that’s what we do best at HVSF — stories that bring together past, present, and future to allow us to see the world in new and surprising ways, stories that carry the fingerprints of many tellers as they are handed down, stories that are told and retold, reimagined and remade again and again. After what we’ve all been through, it feels right that this season is dedicated to renewal, resilience, and the life-affirming power of great stories to remind us of what connects us all. So, gather your people, choose your dates, and come revel in the joy and magic of live theater. This theater company belongs to you, and we can’t wait to welcome you to your new home!

HUDSON VALLEY SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL AND WOOLLY MAMMOTH THEATRE COMPANY PRESENT
Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play Romeo & Juliet WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE directed by GAYE TAYLOR UPCHURCH by
Here’s much to do with hate, but more with love. This most-familiar story is seen through a new lens as Director Gaye Taylor Upchurch brings us a bold take on the iconic, boisterous, poetic and above all, romantic tale of star-crossed lovers. With HVSF’s favorite longtime couple, Kurt Rhoads and Nance Williamson cast in the title roles, this revelatory production reminds us that, while youth may be only skin-deep, true beauty is a quality of the soul, and – in the end – love conquers all.

Every story ends on a dark and raging river.
I realize the power that comes with showing people a different way of seeing the world.
In a not-so-distant future where the grid has failed, society has crumbled, and memories can no longer be stored on hard drives, a group of survivors come together to recreate their vanished world through the lifeaffirming act of telling stories under the stars. A love letter to live theater, and a hymn of survival and resilience (sung by America’s unlikeliest hero, Bart Simpson!), MR. BURNS is an exhilarating exploration of how the pop culture of one era might evolve into the mythology of another. Time Magazine calls MR. BURNS “both scary and sweet, funny but dead serious, unique and wonderfully theatrical.”
In this intimate and exhilarating solo piece, Mohegan theater-maker Madeline Sayet travels to England to study Shakespeare, and in doing so, she traverses geographic borders, personal history, and cultural legacies, in search of a place to belong. Named one of the “great artistic achievements during the pandemic” (Broadway World), WHERE WE BELONG follows Madeline’s personal journey of self-discovery, and traces the intertwined relationship between Shakespeare and colonialism, a relationship with deep roots along the banks of the Muhheakantuck, the tidal estuary colonially known as the Hudson River.

Shakespeare’s magical comedy takes place one mad-cap summer evening where three stories collide. When four young lovers, a jealous fairy king and queen, and a group of amateur actors all find themselves in the woods, is it real? Is it all just a dream? You’ll have to wait and find out! This 60-minute video production is built to stream on demand, and is geared towards audiences of all ages. Beginning in April, A Midsummer Night’s Dream will travel virtually to regional middle and high schools. BOOK NOW! Sean McNall Director of Education smcnall@hvshakespeare.org

To eat or not to eat! The Valley Restaurant has been recognized as a premier dining venue in the Hudson Valley since its opening in 2004, and we are thrilled to partner with them in our new home. Their seasonal American cuisine showcases ingredients from local farmers, with a focus on regionally grown, raised, and prepared foods. With a menu that changes with the season and according to what is perfectly ripe each day — it pairs perfectly with an HVSF performance.
