Academic Learning Resource Core Staff
ALRCS is APU student organization that helps and supports students in various fields in collaboration with the Academic Office so that they can adapt themselves to learning by themselves, which is called âself-learningâ. Many students might be more familiar with the name of System Assistant(SA) and Library Assistant(LA). The task of SA was related to computer. The task of LA was related to library. Currently, these two organizations became one organization to provide more effective support to students and have been working together under the name of ALRCS. ALRCS not only work but also hung out together. Now, ALRCS is a very international organization which members are from 17 countries. In this organization, we have 4 teams, which are D team, Training Team, Environment Team and S&G team. Each teams have each tasks, plan their own projects and manage own team. ALRCS is aiming to the most international organization in Japan. With a variety of activities, we want to be the best in APU.

If you arenât aware of us yet, we ALRCS, members patrol once every period from 2nd to 5th period to make sure everything in the library is well-maintained. You must have seen us at the help desk at the Libraryâs first floor. Well, in this corner we would like to share a few things that we have noticed during our shift recently. This time, the rule that we would like to emphasize on is the Drinking and Eating rules inside the library. There are probably quite a few of you reading this article now, who have been cautioned about the rules. Since, according to the last monthâs Octoberâs news, there were a lot of cases of drinking and eating inside the library, we would once again like to remind everyone about the rules and ask you to kindly follow it. In short, eating and drinking is prohibited everywhere in the library, except at Pangaea 1 and MMR. Especially at MMR, there are a lot of people eating and hence dismantling the rules, therefore, do refer to the picture and try your best to remember and follow the rules sincerely.

MOVIE REVIEW
The Blind Side Honestly, before I started watching this movie, I did not have much expectations. I had only watched it because the storyline seemed interesting enough and also, just like every other movie addict, it is just watching to not let a movie go unwatched once it has piqued my interest. But after having watched it at least a few times after the first time round to relive the experience again, I can now confidently say that this movie is one of my favorite ones - ever. Why do I say this when there are seemingly âbetterâ, higher-budget movies out there with greater action, more complex mysteries, deeper social issues and better reviews with more awards? Well, other than personal preference of course, I like the movie as it approaches the long-standing issue of racism within the States as it is, honest, simple and straightforward, without any unnecessary sympathetic undertones or overboard preaching on morality. The movie maintains a surprisingly lighthearted feel to it while still addressing the issue of racism that still exists between the âwhiteâ and âblackâ populations. Though not the main highlight of the movie, I liked how they handled such a sensitive issue. They did not try to paint a rosy picture of the loving white, Christian family that took in a black child unconditionally. Instead, they documented the inner struggles felt by the Tuohys when they were considering life together with a boy whom everyone sees as a âblackâ, instead of his real self, who is a kind, gentle-mannered child despite his size and sport he practices. The script included the usual, biased opinions felt by a larger part of society and also the familyâs response to such outcry from the people around them. That such dissenting voices had arisen in response to an act which the family only saw as normal and definitely undeserving of such attention, drives home the point that the society in general is placing too much of an unneeded attention to such racist issues when people are obviously not just identified by the colors of their skin. This fact, as well as all the other wonderful little subplots and humorous dialogues which make the movie an even more awesome one, is the reason why this movie is ranked among my top few favorite movies of all time.

ALRCS is now looking for the new members who will work with the present members. Recruitment of new members of ALRCS in this 2013 fall semester has already taken place. The first step to it was attending the guidance. In this guidance, ALRCS members gave a specific explanation about the works and activities of ALRCS and the recruitment process. The number of applicants this semester was 101 in total. From this number, only 10 students can become new ALRCS member at the maximum. It was compulsory to attend one of the guidances at least in order to apply for 2013 Fall ALRCS. â» We are recruiting 1st to 4th semester students. 5th semester students and above cannot apply. This is a good chance not only to improve yourself but also to help other APU students by using your improved ability with ALRCS Teams. The deadline of the application was 2013, December, 6th, at 16:30. Since we now closed applications, we are very hopeful from the new comers at ALRCS! ALRCS has waited long for highly motivated members.

JIRATHIYUT Peeravich (Pete) 4th year APM-CAP(ICT)
Letâs hear the story about JIRATHIYUT Peeravich (Pete), 4th year APM-CAP(ICT) student from Thailand. He is currently the representative of Developers Crossover, one of APU circles. Developers Crossover, short for DevX, is a circle that gathers together people who are interested in computer programming, including those interested to learn. Formed in fall 2012, it has produced one application for Android phones. The app is called âBeppuBusâ. Itâs an app that will show you the time table for busses to and from APU. If youâre interested in their app or in the circle, be sure to check out their website http://apudevx.com. 18
INTERVIEW What is the book(s) you would recommend? And why? To be honest, I actually am not a kind of person who read a lot of books. I normally read some tutorial books for my works, one of the book series I'd like to recommend is the âHead Firstâ series. Itâs a book series from OâReilly that is very instructional and pretty easy and fun to follow, most of them are in IT fields like programming, or maths and science. Some of them are not really for beginners. (Well, but as you take a look at the introduction part, one will easily have an idea) Despite being an instructional book, it explains the topics in conversational styles with story, images and jokes which would allow readers to not find the books so boring. Yeah, and many of them are available in APU library. Those who are taking IT courses at APU or those who simply want to learn more might find this book series interesting. Can you give some advices for students who want to learn programming? Iâm not sure whether it would be good advice or not but well, the first thing is try not to panic when you see codes. Calm down and slowly look into it and try to understand what you wrote. Itâs not just typing and memorizing, itâs like logic and maths problems that need understanding.
After you understand how your code works, try to progress
slowly step-by-step and see the result, then figure out where you have missed. Plus, development tools these days have become really helpful that it assists you a lot, you may not need to remember all those syntax (which is like grammar of the programming language), just try to get the overall concept of how it works. If you are not sure, or forgot something, you can just search on the Internet, there are bunches of answers, tutorials and documentations for that. 19
