GIVING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE CONSIDERATION OF JANE SMITH
FOR A GIFT TO SUPPORT
An Endowed Scholarship and the Annual Fund at Hobart and William Smith Colleges
SEPTEMBER 2019
WHAT YOU HAVE MADE POSSIBLE
Your generosity over the years, in particular your gifts that benefit the Hobart and William Smith Annual Fund and Scholarship and Financial Aid, has greatly strengthened many areas of the Colleges. You have helped to advance and sustain the responsive and agile academic culture. For your steadfast support, HWS are deeply grateful.
Our Request of You In recognition of your devotion to the Colleges and your commitment to higher education, we respectfully request your consideration of a gift of $150,000; $100,000 endowment to support Scholarships and $50,000 to support the Annual Fund. This gift can be payable over 5 years.
$100,000 to create The Jane Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund
$50,000 to support The HWS Annual Fund
Scholarship support remains a top priority for the Colleges. As alums and parents, you know firsthand about the very real costs of higher education. Although they may be highly qualified and interested in attending HWS, some students still might find tuition to be out of reach. The Colleges are committed to closing that gap and ensuring that these strong applicants receive scholarship and financial aid. This would not only allow them to attend, but also enable them to pursue a career out of passion and not out of financial necessity. This fund would provide financial support for one student every year, in perpetuity. Each year you would receive a report on your student and their experience at HWS.
Annual giving is the principal means of enhancing the Colleges’ operating budget and has an impact that is significant and immediate. Your annual fund gift to HWS will provide the Colleges with flexible and immediately available resources for meeting urgent needs and seizing important opportunities to advance the Colleges and the work of its faculty and students.
Conclusion By considering a significant gift to Hobart and William Smith, you will help shape the future of your alma mater. A gift to scholarship is an investment in the Colleges’ greatest asset: its students, whose insights, innovations, and imaginations will shape and lead our world in the decades ahead. Finally, a gift to the Annual Fund, will help inspire and leverage support from other alums, parents and friends of the Colleges. On behalf of President Joyce P. Jacobsen and the entire HWS community, we thank you for your support. As you consider this proposal, please don’t hesitate to contact me at any time. GIVING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE CONSIDERATION OF JANE SMITH
FOR A GIFT TO ENDOW
Hobart Head Hockey Coach Position
TO BE NAMED
Jane Smith Hobart Head Hockey Coach SEPTEMBER 2021
WHAT YOU HAVE MADE POSSIBLE
Your lifelong commitment to Hobart and William Smith has strengthened many areas of the Colleges. In particular, your gifts to financial aid, the Statesmen Athletic Association and Hobart Hockey have contributed to the ongoing successes of these programs. The Colleges are also grateful for your loyalty to the Annual Fund, as well as your response to urgent and pressing needs, such as the Student Resiliency Emergency initiative. Together, you have helped advance and sustain a responsive and agile academic and athletic culture. For your steadfast support and advocacy, Hobart and William Smith are, and will remain, forever grateful.
Our Request of You As we embark on the silent phase of our Capital Campaign, we ask that you consider taking the lead in establishing a new tradition of naming head coach positions at the Colleges. To that end, we respectfully request your consideration of a $1 million gift to name the head coach position for Hobart Hockey. $850,000 of this gift (payable over five years) would be added to the hockey endowment you have already built, which is currently valued at approximately $150,000, bringing the newly established Head Coach Endowment to $1 million. We ask that the remaining $150,000 of your gift be designated as Annual Fund support, divided evenly over five years ($30,000 each year).
With this commitment, the Colleges will officially name the Hobart Head Hockey Coach position, THE JANE SMITH HOBART HEAD HOCKEY COACH, or another name of your choosing. As a preeminent DIII hockey power, consistently ranked among the top five programs in the country, Hobart Hockey continues to add luster to the Hobart and William Smith brand. We have seen the difference a great coach can make as Mark Taylor has set a new standard of excellence. Putting your family’s name behind his title would ensure this precedent remains for Hobart Hockey in perpetuity. Your gift would also set an example for prospective donors looking to fortify other winning programs at the Colleges. Keep in mind, however, that this endowment would be the first of its kind, and hockey would be the first to benefit. Coach Mark Taylor would be the first to be celebrated, and deservedly so. In addition, the Annual Fund remains the principal means of enhancing the broader HWS experience, and your commitment to this perennial top priority has been exemplary and very much appreciated. As we like to say, you both “get it.” You understand how these flexible and available resources provide for the Colleges’ most urgent needs and opportunities, and you understand how these funds allow Hobart and William Smith to do things that set them apart from other colleges, to achieve our particular vision of what a liberal arts education can be. Needless to say, securing $30,000 each year over five years will have a considerable impact in making a great place even better.
Conclusion Thank you, Jane Smith, for your consideration of this gift. On behalf of President Joyce P. Jacobsen and the entire HWS community, I offer my sincere gratitude for all you have done, and are doing, for our alma maters. As you consider this proposal, please don’t hesitate to contact me at any time. PROPOSAL PREPARED FOR
JANE SMITH FOR A GIFT TO ESTABLISH THE
Jane Smith Writing Colleagues Endowed Fund
OCTOBER 2021
Developing the skills and habits that enable effective communication is at the heart of any liberal arts curriculum. This is especially true at Hobart and William Smith, where clear and effective writing is an essential core value. In fact, one of the eight academic goals for every student at HWS is “Integrated Critical Thinking and Communication.” The ability to articulate a question, organize and present evidence and construct complex, elegant and persuasive arguments in written and oral forms are integral to the Colleges’ vision to inspire exploration, collaboration and action. Hobart and William Smith’s commitment to writing excellence as a means to preparing students for a life of consequence is embodied by the Writing Colleagues program which is directly aligned with these priorities. Last week, the Colleges celebrated 10 new Writing Colleagues. They join an impressive group of nearly 100 top students currently on campus who are committed to helping fellow classmates effectively communicate their positions, arguments, ideas, creations and aspirations. Like those who preceded them, these new Writing Colleagues are engaged, creative, approachable and thoughtful. They are true ambassadors for our Colleges and represent the very best of Hobart and William Smith. Your vision and initiative 27 years ago, along with your continued advocacy and support, have made this program what it is today. We remain exceedingly grateful for your leadership.
YOUR VISION. YOUR INITIATIVE. YOUR IMPACT. Our Request of You Current Writing Colleagues, and the faculty and staff who mentor and support them, are eager to make a great program even better, while external reviewers have strongly endorsed its continuation and expansion. Demand for Writing Colleagues in more courses has increased each year, and creating programmatic endowments to strengthen teaching, learning and student-success has been identified as a core component of the Colleges’ upcoming Capital Campaign. Needless to say, advancing this remarkable program and broadening its impact is a top priority. To that end, we ask you to consider establishing the Jane Smith Writing Colleagues Endowed Fund with a gift of $300,000, payable over three years. In doing so, you will fortify the foundation you have created while securing operational resources for the Writing Colleagues program, in perpetuity.
Impact Accelerated Additionally, the Jane Smith Writing Colleagues Endowed Fund would serve as a launching point for the program’s envisioned future, which includes many enhancement and expansion ideas, such as: • • • • • • • • •
12-month Writing Colleagues internship position Professional Development seminars Additional writing awards and honors Common physical space on campus for Writing Colleges to gather and collaborate Support of our vibrant alum network to include regular communications, networking events and other engagement opportunities, both on- and off-campus Writing retreats for students, faculty and alums Stipends for faculty who lead these programs, or a full-time program director Writing speaker series Writers-in-residence on campus
Conclusion Our Writing Colleagues have added considerable luster to the HWS brand, and the program is poised for even greater success moving forward. Establishing this Fund would accelerate our efforts to that end while meeting the increased demand for these remarkable students across the curriculum. Thank you, Jane Smith, for your thoughtful consideration of this gift. On behalf of President Joyce P. Jacobsen, members of our Writing Colleagues family and the broader HWS community, we offer our sincere gratitude for all you have done and are doing - for our alma maters. As you consider this proposal, please don’t hesitate to contact us at any time. Ruth C.
