Happy Holidays!
A Word from the Executive Director Seasons Greetings, Please join me in celebrating the holidays with a glimpse of our recent activity and our community’s growth this last year, along with an eager eye for activities planned for 2016. We’ve introduced a redevelopment concept for the vacant Lutheran Concordia School as a hub of artist residential studios; started rehab work on the old juke joint, Sis’s Tavern, a heritage resource of the charming Town of North Brentwood; began three new public sculptures; continued our small business workshops; celebrated the 8th Annual Downtown Hyattsville Arts Festival, and moved our online network of community resources to a new CDC website. The CDC continues to build local economic capacity through one-on-one small business assistance; and to bring innovative new resources and businesses to the area. To do so, we’ve initiated many new partnerships beyond the borders of Hyattsville with neighboring towns and groups inside the Beltway. We are also gathering resources to fulfill the Gateway Arts District vision of a Stream Valley Artway. While recruiting talented new staff and dedicated board members, we’ve also had to say goodbye to some. Our longtime employee and friend Colin McGlynn left to pursue his dream job at TransitScreen. But we’ve had the privilege of bringing aboard Kayleigh Gunnoud as Program Officer; we’ve welcomed the crisp energy and perspective of new Board Member Chris Hatcher; and last but not least, the CDC Board of Directors and Staff give many thanks to Eileen Cave, who served on our Board since 2006, and to Lonnie Moffet and Kaitlin Miller, as well: their passion, wisdom, and deep love of the Hyattsville community will be missed. Best Regards,
Stuart Eisenberg, Executive Director

Small Business Corner (cont.) Small Business Workshops 2014 + 2015
Following on the success of last year’s program; CDC staff organized our Fall 2015 series, in partnership with TD Bank; which featured two engaging workshops. 15 local entrepreneurs and businesses got down to brass tacks to address real world operating challenges. The Fall 2014 series, Serving the Emergent Market, was comprised of small business workshops and one-on-one counseling with area experts. Organized by CDC staff and through a Community Development Block Grant funded by the Prince George’s County Department of Housing and Community Development, over 20 local businesses participated. Additionally, HyCDC distributed Small Business Saturday materials Fall 2014 + 2015. Read our Recap online at hycdc.org

Our ancillary storage facility is in full use. We extend a big thanks to the Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council for its financial support and to the local community service groups who’ve worked with our staff and artist Alan Binstock, on our continued work transforming the abandoned former cable TV satellite dish into the sculpture Future View. Business, Property, Public Art + Transit Databases In Beta
You are invited to take advantage of four CDC developed online tools, currently in beta: the Hyattsville CDC Business Directory and the Hyattsville CDC Properties Database, designed to measure and display occupied, vacant and for sale properties across Hyattsville and its environs. In beta, these tools make it easier for stakeholders who contact our staff to continue their research and create informed groupings of market data. In addition, we are proud to launch a beta Public Art Listing via the Gateway Arts District’s MyGatewayArts.org to map the growing population of sculptures, mosaics and murals in and nearby Hyattsville and the Arts District. Lastly, via the CDC’s redesigned website and Welcome Guide, we invite you to browse our Transit Database, a growing collection of bus, trail, and multimodal guides and maps. Head to ‘Community Life’ to begin.

Riverdale Park Public Art Initiative
HCDC is working with the Town of Riverdale Park, and in conjunction with our fiscal affiliate the Riverdale Park Arts Council, to create an Art-In-Place sculpture program. The Initiative extends our goal to introduce high-quality works of public art throughout Route 1 and the surrounding area. We have worked through a year filled with licensing and legal issues in order to secure the Art Initiative’s installation locations:
• JD Williams Professional Building • Beale Circle • Chambers Funeral Home • Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail • Riverdale Recreation Park • Riverside Neighborhood Park As the pilot for the program; Joanna Blake’s Great Blue Herons, will be a permanent artwork for East-West Highway & Route 1 at the JD Williams Professional Building. This installation is also supported by the County’s Environmental Public Art Project (EPAP). The commissioned work is the second of the Environmental Public Art Project works sponsored by the Prince George’s Arts & Humanities Council, the Department of the Environment, and the Art In Public Places. Thanks for additional funding through private donation also goes to Councilmember Jonathan Ebbeler.

Local Arts Update (cont.) Ribbon of Life coming to the Gateway at University Town Center Accompanying the newest lifestyle Safeway alongside a collection of new shops and restaurants, ECHO Realty and Hyattsville Community Development Corporation are pleased to announced that the completed sculpture, Ribbon of Life, by artist Alan Binstock will be installed some time in February at the entrance gateway to the East-West Highwayoriented commercial development at University Town Center (UTC) in Prince George’s County.
Following a juried process, the selected sculpture, Ribbon of Life, by artist Alan Binstock, will be positioned east of America Boulevard, located in the outdoor pedestrian plaza / seating area outside Safeway, in clear view of the entrance gateway. With its proximity to new shops, medical offices, restaurants and the anchor grocer, the artwork was selected for its themes that reflect the new development: engaging and evoking healthy foods, healthy diet, healthy appearance, and healthy living.

Community Members Corner Prince George’s Plaza Transit District Development Plan (PGP TDDP)
The Planning Board voted to adopt the Prince George’s Plaza Transit District Development Plan (TDDP) on December 3rd. The Plan will go up to the District Council for approval in spring 2016. Visit PGPlanning.org for the latest updates.
Transit Screens Installed at Participating Businesses
Our Pilot TransitScreen program provides at a glance, real-time, next bus/next train information; making bus and metro commuting more convenient and effective. It’s a software application that reduces vehicle traffic and pollution, while making it easier to shop or dine local. Whereas the screens were developed initially to encourage ridership on the Route 1 Ride Bus, the application can now display all nearby stops for WMATA bus and train, TheBUS, and UMD shuttle routes. A mini-grant from Maryland Milestones and in-kind support from DC-based TransitScreen helped fund development and operation of three digital transit screens for area businesses.
With the new year, HyCDC plans to continue promoting this program up the corridor.

Be on the Lookout!
You can see these screens in action at Franklin’s Restaurant & Brewery in Downtown Hyattsville, by the bus transfer station at Terminal Market in Mount Rainier, and until recently, the Varsity in College Park. View a Map.
