Greetings, Why Bursting on the Scene? 2017 is the year that a formidable and welcome new development, The Riverfront at West Hyattsville received its preliminary approvals to proceed to transform the long-vacant, 18.5-acre warehouse site that has dominated our view from the Metro Station platform for so many years. West Hyattsville is one of the rare stations in the WMATA system that hasn’t seen any new construction or decorative improvements since its opening in 1993. However, since then, the City of Hyattsville certainly has been the stage for many a wonderful, transformative community investment. So the time for community placemaking at West Hyattsville is now! Bringing the vision for a high-quality work of public art at our metro station is now just one burst of creative activity away. With the help of the Hyattsville community: Hyattsville CDC, along with Metro’s Art in Transit (AIT) program, and the City of Hyattsville, are delivering new promise and resources to the West Hyattsville Metro Station in the form of a beautiful pair of fresh murals: “Breaking the Horizon:” Walls of Art. It is our hope that with such an inspiring mural design to kick off this Bursting series (designed by Hyattsville natives, Cory Stowers and Henry Portillo), a down payment on the promise of revitalization in West Hyattsville will be delivered. We will continue to build upon Hyattsville’s readiness for revitalization with family-friendly arts events, solid civic leadership, and transitoriented development in the pipeline. We are honored to be a part of setting the stage for what’s-to-come. Please pick up a paint brush, stop by our community partners’ tables, and use our West Hyattsville checklist to explore the neighborhood. A special thank you goes out to our sponsors for their long standing, generous support. We want everyone who calls Hyattsville home to find it a great place to enjoy the arts in all their forms. We also hope new visitors will find Hyattsville a destination worth coming to again and again. To learn more about our organization and our sponsors, scan this program book or stop by the Hyattsville CDC Welcome Table. We look forward to meeting you. Warm Regards, Stuart Eisenberg, Executive Director Hyattsville Community Development Corporation

We asked West Hyattsville Residents... What do you think of the Mural Design? On April 6th + 24th, community members joined the muralists and Hyattsville CDC staff at St. Matthew’s to unveil the mural design and discuss the story behind the mural’s creation. HCDC staff asked participants to describe their reactions. Some of our favorites are:
An emergence in a time of uncertainty
An anchor
Full Circle! I used to tag there!
Reminds me of growing up in Hyattsville It’s foretelling of something to come
Youthful Whimsy...Wonder
Psychedelic, man
Please make it glow at night! D.I.V.E.R.S.E.
Vibrant
Stars and Stripes..arrows and telephone poles!
Perhaps the artists said it best... “This whimsical concept has stylistic roots in vector graphic design, with clean lines and bold visual elements that move through the mural space keeping the viewer’s eyes traveling. Many of the graphic elements can be easily replicated by novice artists. We create and install works of art that help to give context and identity to communities, and have engaged hundreds of youth and adult artists to take part in the creation of these works” - Portillo + Stowers
