Annual Report 2012-2013
Dear Friends of Hyde, One of the things I like about New England boarding schools is our eclectic mix of philosophies and offerings. On the one hand, our region is home to some of the most prestigious schools in the world. (While we might like to poke fun at the notion of “St. Grottlesex” – a fictitious school resulting from a collage of New England’s most storied school names – the moniker also keeps us all honest in sharing a commitment and sense of obligation to live up to the fact that our little corner of the world is expected to offer schools of excellence.) On the other hand, our schools espouse a spectrum of emphases from college preparatory to sports academies to outdoor schools to institutions serving a wide range of special needs. I especially appreciate the freedom our schools enjoy to visualize and honor missions of our choosing. This freedom has afforded Hyde the opportunity to transcend the standard college preparatory label and to strive to be what we call a “preparation for life” school. Our three-part emphasis on 1) character development, 2) college preparation, and 3) family renewal is one-of-a-kind. Simply put, we are the only school where one can simultaneously experience all three. Over forty years ago, it transformed my life. More recently, it transformed my daughters’ lives. However, as varied and unique as New England boarding schools can be, we are all currently gripped by the same concern: Cost. If there is a way to provide a meaningful and safe 24-hour educational experience characterized by deep enrichment, thought-provoking preparation, creative recreation, and values-forming challenges at a low cost, suffice it to say that none of the boarding schools in the six New England states have been able to figure that formula out. As Hyde joins the constant vigil in the name of cost containment, one of our most critical allies is the Annual Fund. It helps us in so many ways. For example, consider the faculty, the lifeblood of our

school. Imagine categorizing the compensation of all New England boarding school teachers into four tiers: #1 being the highest paid, #4 being the lowest. Years ago, we at Hyde established the financial objective to compensate our faculty at a level commensurate with the 2nd tier of all New England boarding school teachers. Some years we succeed in meeting this goal. Some years we don’t. However, without the Annual Fund, we would have no hope of achieving this milestone… in any year. If you are reading this letter, you are among those who are working with us to strive for this and other goals, including increased financial aid in order to offer the Hyde opportunity to families from all walks of life. Chances are you either attended Hyde or you love someone who does or once did. Regardless of your affiliation, you are among the hundreds of generous contributors who gave over $1M in support of Hyde last year. On behalf of our students, parents, faculty and staff, I thank you for helping us to ensure that Hyde stays relentlessly focused on value-added objectives. Your support helps us do just that. In the year that has passed since I wrote my most recent Annual Fund “Thank You” letter, I celebrated my 40th Hyde reunion. Nearly twothirds of my classmates returned for the festivities. One remarked, “Well, none of us turned out to be CEO of General Motors, but all of us turned out to be pretty good guys.” I agree. I would not predict that the “St. Grottlesex” name would be amended anytime soon to work the Hyde name into the mix. However, I’m sure that we will continue to strive to make our schools “Be the Best Possible Hyde.” On behalf of everyone at Hyde, many, many thanks for generously joining us in pursuing that ongoing goal. 2012-2013 Hyde Schools Annual Report The 2012-2013 Hyde Schools Annual Report is published by the Office of Development and Constituent Relations, and it lists gifts made to Hyde’s boarding schools in Bath, Maine and Woodstock, Connecticut, between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013. The listing of contributors does not include donors who gave directly to Hyde’s charter schools. Payments on previous-year pledges are not included in the acknowledgements.

Restricted Gifts to Hyde in 2012-2013 Below is a listing of Hyde donors who contributed restricted funds towards scholarships, endowment or other non-Hyde@40 campaign projects. Michael V. Dawes, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund 1944-2010 Faculty Member, Coach, Long-time Friend of the Hyde Schools Community Mike Dawes and his wife, Lynn, joined the Hyde Schools Community when their son, Mike, Jr., enrolled in 1989. Their passion for Hyde and vision for education helped to remind others why they’d chosen to become members of the Hyde Schools family. Mike served as Hyde’s Chief Financial Officer, Director of Admissions, Director of Development, Associate Head of School, teacher, and coach. Mike worked on both the Maine and Connecticut campuses, where he mentored both students and faculty. He is remembered for his tireless commitment to guiding his students, peers, and colleagues toward their greatest potential. The scholarship fund was started by Michael and Regina Jaye in recognition of Mike and Lynn’s work at Hyde. It is awarded annually to a deserving student and family attending the Woodstock Campus.
