ABOUT HYDRO74 Joshua M. Smith, known as globally renowned artist Hydro74, works in Orlando, Florida as a designer and artist. Through his sixteen years of published work he is known for pushing the boundaries of contemporary art. He is passionate about breaking new ground and expanding his artistic influences with the peers and brands in which he collaborates. His goal is to improve his work through every new piece of art that is customized for each unique project. His work has contributed to successful partnerships and promotions with Nike, Lucasfilm, Microsoft Xbox, Legendary Pictures, MillerCoors, EA SPORTS, and many more.

DEFIANCE & ETIQUETTE Few times a year I am honored to give talks based on my life which is filled with a dysfunctional past of death, abuse, foster care, hopelessness and uncertainty that eventually spawned ‘Defined by Defiance’. The idea is that to better yourself, you must be defiant to the things that expect you to fail and push for a better life. For me it is design. This factors into the work I do and the relationships I build. I’m not a freelancer, but a company owner of 17 years and do my best to ensure relationships and etiquette within. I do not share information between clients and always strive to be professional in my dealings. This job is my pleasure, my reward for the hard work invested to learn and be better and hopefully you’ll see that within the works shown.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Vector is a part of my DNA. I fell in love with it 16 years ago and decided I wanted to focus directly on this form of illustration. During the process I would challenge myself to find solutions and resolve issues to perfect techniques in the hopes to offer something different than others and to form Hydro74 as a unique entity.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Years ago I teamed up with a friend who had a laser engraver. At the time it seemed interesting but didnt realize the value of being able to feel the piece after it was done. Year after year we test new ideas and new things to see what we can get away with. Here are some samples of board designs and engravings.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Posters are an amazing medium that allows this sense of freedom. The beauty of the rough sketch to the final preparation for color separations is a amazing journey. Each poster is a way for me to test new techniques I have in mind but also to force myself to try something new.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION One of the first projects that started off my career was a shirt design. That project soon paved the ground work for a few more projects till eventually I was working for a lot of brands in the Action Sports market. One simple shirt to spark a career, amazing really.
