GROWELL The Growing Experts
If there is but one name in the land of retail that truly wets the whistles of hydroponic enthusiasts, then it is likely to be GroWell.
ALWAYS ON HAND, AND FRIENDLY WITH IT TOO… Sprawling half of the country, you can be safe in the knowledge that you’re probably not that far away to a shop that actually has the replacement bulb you so desperately need. Half the shops you’ve already tried calling have them coming in the next few days, but unfortunately that excuse just isn’t going to wash for your plants. They need it now, and will visibly show their disdain for you if you don’t come up with the goods. Thankfully, your phone call to your local GroWell proved fortuitous. Not only did they confirm they have the one you were after but they actually did so in a polite manner. I know this may seem quite an alien concept when compared to the average grow shop, but it’s probably just this sort of out the box thinking that has got them where they are today.
VAST RANGE OF PRODUCTS ON DISPLAY… So after slamming the phone down and hastily skidaddling off in your car you eventually pull up to the store and enter through the green pearly gates. The sheer wealth of products on display is almost too much for your senses to take in at once. Your pace immediately slows, your eyes widen and your pupils dilate as you struggle to take everything in and contain your excitement (similar to that of a child entering Toys’R’Us) at the unparalleled variety of products on display. Any chances that the bulb is the only thing you will be walking out the store with quickly evaporate.
HELPING YOU TO HELP YOUR PLANTS... What was supposed to be a quick dash and grab procedure, begins to unfold into something much more fulfilling and beneficial to your grow than any singular product can tangibly provide. What begins as a few questions on
some unfamiliar products quickly turns into a full blown education on the finer points of hydroponic practices and cultivation methods. You quickly realise that giving half the story is not something done in this store; their expertly dropped bombs of knowledge have likely just blown you from n00b, straight up to pro. Knowledge is Power. To be fair it’s not usually just knowledge, there’s normally a fair few men with pointy sticks thrown in there just to make sure, but you know what I mean. GroWell ensures all its staff are able to help you make the perfect choice for your grow by making sure everyone is rigorously trained up to the highest of levels. Even though the accents some of the staff come out with would initially lead you to think otherwise, none of them are likely to be stumped by any of the complex questions you can throw at them. Instead they relish the opportunity to divulge their extensive knowledge unto thee, helping you grow into an expert indoor gardener.

CLOSED ROOM DISPLAYS Now in select GroWell stores... Becoming legendary at indoor growing isn’t something that happens overnight. It takes a lot of practice and a significant amount of being pointed in the right direction. Fortunately for you, GroWell has a fantastically large index finger and knows precisely which direction to aim it. On top of the spectacular product displays you can find in all their stores, GroWell has installed premium closed loop growing systems in their Bristol, Sheffield, Coleshill and Wembley stores for you to stand in awe at. Even though the scope of products may be out of reach for you at the beginning of your hydroponic journey, they do serve exquisitely well to inspire you into what you should be aiming at for ultimate environmental control. The Opticlimate, Maxi controller and
associated Dimlux lighting equipment are arguably the finest calibre of equipment you can potentially get your grubby little mits on at the minute. The sort of functionality this lighting equipment offers, combined with the precise environmental control from the Opticlimate truly is second to none. For those of you lucky enough to be considering this sort of growing environment, your choice couldn’t be made easier for you than to see all the ins and outs of the various working aspects of each product involved in the equation. Brand spanking new Leicester store... WHO? IdealGrow is a brand new Leicester store and the brainchild of young entrepreneur, Jamie. But new doesn’t mean callow - Jamie has bags of industry experience, and he’s determined to make a splash on the Leicester hydroponics scene.
ETHOS Jamie is focussed on giving IdealGrow’s customers good quality products that don’t cost an arm and a leg. Taking advice from Buddha his store is going the Middle Way - avoiding bargain basement products of perhaps lesser quality. As with many hydroponics stores, Jamie offers a bespoke design service catering for all budgets. For Jamie, good service means giving the customers what they want; he won’t be pushing people to buying things they don’t want or need. There’s also a private area where people sit down and discuss larger orders if required. Jamie is located just around the corner from his main wholesaler (as well as several of the UK’s other largest distributors) which means he’ll always be able to fulfil your order no matter how big or small.
WHAT ARE THEY LIKE? Being brand new, HYDROMAG can’t discuss Idealgrow on their past merits. But we love following new hydroponics stores from their beginnings, as it’s often a chance to see fresh in-store innovations in practice. For instance, Jamie has had power points installed all around the shop floor, making product demonstrations (e.g. a fan being plugged in so you can hear the volume) easy and convenient. As with all the best ideas they seem obvious with hindsight but this simple concept is something many of the established stores have yet to consider. One good thing about new stores is that the owners aren’t caught up in any politics in the industry. You often find with a more experienced store that they’ve fallen out with certain distributors, which ultimately means the customer is limited to what they can buy. With IdealGrow the slate’s clean so this will obviously not be a problem! As with all the good, friendly stores, hot and cold drinks are on offer.
LOCATION Set in a relatively quiet industrial area of Leicester, IdealGrow is only half a mile from town. It’s just off the A50, and only 10 minutes from both M1 junctions 21 and 21a.

The only way is Toxteth ETHOS Business owner Thomas and store manager Stephen run a dedicated team of hydroponics enthusiasts at this relatively small but dynamic store in the Toxteth area of Liverpool. Don’t be deterred by the deceptively small space, as NPK Technology prides itself on stocking everything the industry has to offer and more besides. The shop is crammed full of all the usual suspects, plus a few extras you might not have come across before. As keen indoor and outdoor gardeners, Thomas and his team often go the extra mile to get the best results for their clients. Notably in one case, by creating their own homemade version of the infamous “Brummy Bubbler” - videos of which can be found on Hydroshow TV (Youtube search: “NPK Bubbler”). For NPK Technology, their endeavours to be Liverpool’s best Hydroponics grow store don’t stop there. For instance, Thomas has
recently become head horticulturist within a research project run by the Liverpool Science Centre. Thomas and Stephen have also been assisting students from Liverpool University in building aquaponics systems. And the gardening based philanthropy continues unabated, as the guys have been devoting time to help children to grow greens at Unity Youth Centre, Growing Granby, and Cullen Green Urban Garden.
EXPERTISE As an ex-military man, Thomas is confident and enthusiastic. When he is not working behind the counter, you’ll find him at various hydroponics expos around Europe, pressing the industry’s manufacturers for as much information as possible, all in the name of passing it on to his valued customers. NPK recognise there’s a lot of conflicting, and sometimes downright bad advice out there. The team are big on knowledge – always there to pass on their experience to
help their customers set up their grow rooms, cutting through the confusion and setting records straight.
MEDIA The boys at NPK give up their personal time to create a lively podcast and blog. In the podcast they discuss multiple topics from plant growth to environmental factors – usually suggesting specific products to help overcome whatever problems the grower might be facing. The blog section contains all sorts of interesting information to help you get started. For a relatively small team, these guys get a lot done.

HYDROMAG has witnessed first-hand Future Garden’s mixed-gender staff conversing with their customers, and we were very impressed with the level of knowledge on display. And watching the sales staff highfiving and joking with customers, you really get the feeling there’s genuine friendliness rather than just the hard sell at Future Garden. Customers can bring in their greenhouse or growroom
measurments and Future Garden’s excellent staff will then help you plan and design your room, create your feed schedule, and provide everything you need to get started and beyond. No trade is done over the counter – you come, pay, get your invoice, and then your vehicle is loaded for you. And a further bonus, particularly useful in England – Future Garden have an internal loading bay so if it’s raining, you’re not stood in the wet.
PRODUCTS All the usual suspects and more can be found here, from nutrients to hydroponic systems, to humidifiers and CO2 equipment. Newcomers shouldn’t fear being lost in a fog of confusion, surrounded by a multitude of brands they’ve never heard of. The quiet rural location feels private and it’s a lovely neck of the woods. A further perk, the Chigwell store is gated. You’ll need to give them a buzz on the intercom, but once inside you can feel secure knowing that your wheels are sat safely in the car park (the paranoid amongst you can even watch from the CCTV monitors). Only 5 minutes off the M11, giving you direct access to East and North London, North and West Essex.

WORTLEY HYDROPONICS If Carlsberg made hydroponics shops... Keen hydroponic hobbyist Dean was a shop manager for a number of years before taking the plunge and opening his own store in Leeds last year. He moved to his new store as he was unable to climb the ladder any further, since then Wortley Hydroponics has come a long way. This Wortleybased store, with its epic-sized showroom, has a lovely relaxed atmosphere. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, which is why you’ll find a dart board, a Playstation as well as a drum kit, several guitars and table football (Dean’s team offer a 25% discount off any one item to anyone who can beat them at the latter. Seriously). “If Carlsberg made hydroponics shops, it probably wouldn’t be as good as this,” commented one customer when HYDROMAG
visited. “Coming down here is like going to a mate’s house,” remarked another. Dean stocks everything he knows the local clientele want, and with the enormity of his store you’ll find product displays everywhere. Every size of tent can be found, packed with systems and lighting, growing a variety of plants from - you guessed it - chillies ... to strawberries. Pop in and try a Ghost Chilli if you can hack it (bring your own milk please, plenty of it). The store itself is just 10 minutes (with traffic) off Junction two of the M621 and Leeds city centre. There are plenty of parking spaces and of course a loading bay. And let’s not forget the Porsche dealers around the corner, where you can pop in and pick up your new wheels after visiting the boys at Wortley (cough).

From Devon to Cornwall, Progrow have it covered! ETHOS The idea that you can go in to a grow store that feels relaxed yet like a professional and well-organised national retail outlet might seem a little foreign to most hydroponic growers... However both Progrow stores achieve exactly that. There’s also a lovely sense of calm at Progrow - on entering Progrow you’re immediately confident these guys know what they’re doing. It’s an old cliché, but Progrow does exactly what is says on the tin. Progrow have a wide range of customers; from hobby chilli growers to universities and horticultural colleges. They’ve even acted as consultants for television and film companies representing hydroponics in their productions. Not only that, when HYDROMAG asked where else in the world Dave and his team had provided products, he pulled out an impressive list of 70 countries – a feat not many other stores can say they have managed!
PRODUCTS The management at ProGrow have been in the industry for over a decade and have seen many products come and go. On speaking with Dave and Steve, it’s clear that they don’t suffer fools gladly; when choosing products to stock, they want to know every
little detail, and if something’s amiss, they simply won’t stock it on the shelves. What’s more, they have huge warehouses, meaning they always have what you want in stock. To boot, Progrow have also developed their own successful product lines, taking existing technologies and improving on them.
NUTRIENTS Progrow are very aware of gimmicks, and recognise that many nutrient companies are trying to sell “Silver Bullets”. Progrow deliberately only stock a limited number of nutrients – the ones they prefer – rather than offer an excessive range of nutrients just for the sake of it.
TECHNOLOGY With the re-introduction of closed loop environments (this has been around since the early 90s, but has only hit the hydro industry in the UK very recently), the team at Progrow have been developing systems for creating grow rooms using air conditioning systems and humidifiers. Their stores will be showcasing demonstration areas in late 2014 / early 2015, and they promise to be a spectacle worth seeing. Watch this space for more information.

Our flagship showrooms WHERE IT BEGAN Holland Hydroponics’ first shop opened in 1996 in Heywood near Middleton, to the north of Manchester. The original store moved location several times and has even been in the renowned Affleck’s Palace. It finally settled in Ardwick where it now acts as Holland’s head office. It is fair to say that Holland Hydroponics is Manchester’s original hydroponics superstore and remains a popular choice for growers in the Manchester area and on the M62 corridor.
ETHOS The ethos of Holland Hydroponics has always been to offer a comfortable shopping experience, with excellent customer service and competitive prices. What perhaps ensures Holland stands out amongst the local competition is their stock capacity. Their warehouses at both the Burnley and Manchester stores are enormous, meaning they always have the products you want in stock. Holland have been focusing recently on importing, bringing the UK consumer the benefit of lots of everyday products (ballasts, lighting and so
on) at lower prices. They’ve also gone all ‘John Lewis’ of late, offering a price match guarantee against all competitor stores in the North West, West Yorkshire and North Wales.
STAFF/SERVICE At the Holland Hydroponics stores, you can always expect to see familiar, friendly faces. The staff here are also very knowledgeable, always willing to dispense with some great advice. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’ll be able to speak to someone on a level, and there are no annoying, pushy salesmen here – if you know what you’re after, the staff will let you buy it without trying to ‘upsell’ you. Holland prides itself on its after-sales service and has earned a great reputation for customer satisfaction. Anyone can call, any time, and Holland’s advisors are only too happy to help. Finally, it’s refreshing that Holland has a good gender balance in store. None of the sweaty, gym locker-room machismo you get in some specialist shops here…

STORE SPECS Total size: 11,000 Sq Ft Plants growing: Peas, tomatoes, bananas, money plants – plus more. Undoubtedly one of the UK’s largest stores, with a beautiful open-plan showroom boasting a vast array of different products in stock (pretty much every brand of nutrient and additives can be found here). The car park is HUGE – you’ll never not be able to park. Also – there’s a large accessible loading bay. Only 15 minutes from the M62, 10 minutes from the A627(M), and 5 minutes’ drive from Manchester City Centre. Holland’s veteran Nick is extremely knowledgeable and always keen to help, as are Calvin - their senior sales assistant – and Paul, the friendliest store manager you’ll ever meet.

Again, one of the UK’s largest stores, with massive stocking capabilities, showcasing a large array of systems, tents, and other products. It’s a great location, only 15 minutes’ drive from the M65 in the Townley area of Burnley. The private car park is spacious and there’s a concealed private entrance in the rear, with a large accessible loading bay. Store manager Michael is very knowledgeable and always keen to help, as is Dan, the assistant manager.

The Holland’s “Express” concept... WHAT IS EXPRESS? The Holland Hydroponics Express stores are designed for the hydroponic grower who knows what they want. The Express stores focus on localised products, stocking mainly what is popular in that area. With the head office just around the corner, and deliveries being made daily, if you can’t find what you need it will often be sourced for you by the following day. Not to say these stores aren’t well stocked – despite having a smaller showroom, both the Flint and Huddersfield stores have massive stock rooms compared to the average hydroponics retail outlet (with the support of the two much larger stores in Manchester and Burnley). Express makes for a more focussed shopping experience. With minimal displays, and a trade counter as your point of contact, you won’t find yourself scratching your head, staring at a sea of different products looming over you. Holland’s wanted to create a streamlined service where you can call ahead and place your order, then collect in store later that day. However, it’s not all go go go, the counter
service also proving popular, with knowledgeable staff on-call to answer your questions at a leisurely pace.
STAFF/SERVICE With dedicated counter staff and “pickers & packers”, expect your order to be turned around quickly. There’ll be no kicking your heels while you wait for staff members to find your products round back. The staff at Holland’s “Express” stores have pretty much mastered the concept of the ‘fast turnaround’, without ever seeming rushed. Once again, Holland is an equal opportunities supporter and it’s great to see both genders being represented fairly. Yin and Yang are both covered at the counters of Flint and Huddersfield, creating a nice relaxed atmosphere for the customer (unlike the ‘prison workshop’ vibe of some hydroponics stores).
FACILITIES A no-nonsense approach to hydroponic retail means regular customers can still enjoy a cup of tea and a meandering natter with the staff.
However, for those who like to nip in and out, or have their order ready on arrival – Express is the store for you. Car parks and private loading bays are available at both stores.

Located on the A458, the Flint Store is easily accessible from the North Wales artery – the A55, and often sees customers travelling from as far as Chester and even Bangor.
