Photography Whether you’re using a point and shoot, a bridge camera, one of the new-fangled mirror-free cameras or a highend digital SLR, the basics are all the same. All cameras work on the same principles, and mastering them will help you take better photos. 2 | HARDWARE BuyER’s guiDE | NovEmBER 2011

THE BaSiCS
Exposure Everything we see with our eyes is light. Cameras work the same, but for short periods of time. All photographs are just snapshots of light, rather than a continuous stream. This is called exposure, and there are three things that determine exposure: aperture value, shutter speed and ISO. These are the tools all cameras use to capture light, and record a scene as you see it with your eyes. Some cameras do it automatically and other cameras will let you manually control exposure, for either a brighter or darker result. All three parameters can be used to affect the exposure of a photo, in addition to the depth of field and effect of motion, but it’s a game of give and take. When you lower the aperture, you have to increase the shutter speed and lower the ISO. When you increase the exposure time, you have to lower the other two. It’s about striking a balance for allowing in just the right amount of light.
Aperture
P
hotography, going by the Greek origins of the word, means “writing with light”, or more accurately, creating a graph using light. And it really is as simple as that: accurately controlling light will give you a good photograph. The sensors inside digital cameras are the electronic equivalent of film. Digital sensors have been engineered to emulate film in the way they respond when exposed to light, and the camera bodies have changed to accommodate this new type of film. The basic principles of photography haven’t changed at all.
As the name implies, aperture means “opening”. In this case, it’s the opening, in your lens, that allows light onto the sensor. Aperture values are quoted as f-stops (focal stops, often seen as f/2.8 or similar) and each full f-stop is one exposure value. The scale of f values starts at 1, with each subsequent value being the square root of two, to the power of 1, 2, 3, etc. Thus, f/1 is followed by f/1.4, then f/2, then f/2.8, and f/4. It continues infinitely, but most of the lenses on pocket cameras usually go to f/8, while SLR lenses may go as high as f/45. The trick is to remember that low f-stop values mean high light, because that is when the opening is at its largest. Higher f-stop values mean small lens apertures, which
projects less light onto the sensor. Aside from controlling light, aperture is also used to control depth of field. This can best be witnessed when you use a low aperture value, such as f/2, and a close-up subject is in sharp focus while the background is out of focus (note, not blurred). This out-of-focus effect is called bokeh. A lot of bokeh, which is when the background is just smooth shades of colour, means a shallow depth of field. Less bokeh, when you can start identifying out-of-focus objects, means a deeper depth of field. If you’re taking photos of some flowers and want the background blurred out, use a low f-stop value. If you’re taking photos of a crowd of people, and want everybody’s face to be in focus, use a high f-stop value. Compact cameras will very often WWW.iNcREDiBlE.co.zA | 3

be limited to f/8 as their highest aperture because the small size of the sensors and lenses in these cameras. A small sensor means that they already have less effective depth of field at low f-stops, while larger values will make it difficult to capture enough light onto the small sensor surface. Single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras, on the other hand, have large sensors. This means they capture more light and also have better depth field across the range of f-stops. Cameras allow for finer control, allowing adjustment of aperture values in 1/3 increments, leading to values like f/1.8 or f6.3, which are non-standard f-stop values.
Shutter speed
eed Shutter sp
4 | HARDWARE BuyER’s guiDE | NovEmBER 2011
While aperture controls the width of the pipe through which light floods onto the camera sensor, the shutter is the faucet that controls how much light is allowed for a specific amount of time. In film cameras the shutter was a mechanism that covered the film, opening for a certain amount of time before closing again. This is what captures the image. On digital cameras the shutter can be either mechanical or electronic, in both cases doing exactly the same thing. In most cases shutter speed will be measured in fractions of a second. For example, a shutter speed of one 500th of a second is displayed on the camera as 1/500. The mechanical shutters in digital SLR cameras have physical limits to the speed of their operation, but even then the 1/8000th minimum is usable only in extremely bright light. Mirror-free cameras using electronic shutters can go as low as 1/16000th of a second. On the other end of the scale we have slow shutter speeds, measured in seconds. One second is a very long time to expose a scene, and if there is any movement or vibration it will blur the photo. Even an exposure value of half a second will run the risk of blurring, and it’s recommended to use a tripod when you’re using slow shutter speeds. Night-time photography usually
THE BaSiCS requires a trade-off: a low aperture value, for maximum light and low ISO value for minimum noise. This means using exposures of 10 – 30 seconds, for which a remote shutter release is essential (to prevent touching the camera and blurring the result).
ISO Confusingly, ISO actually stands for “International Organisation of Standards”. To make things even more ambiguous, when using ISO in camera terms it refers to the standard, set by the ISO, for film speed. Current ISO standards for film speeds were first established in 1974, to help photographers get a standard system for the type of film used for certain situations. Digital photography has kept this system, but made it vastly more convenient than having to carry around several different rolls of film for morning, daylight, dusk and night-time photography. Instead, we can just select the ISO level on the camera, and the electronics do the rest. ISO determines the digital image sensor’s sensitivity to light. Most cameras will go as low as 80 or 100, which means very low sensitivity to light – ideal for bright daylight, when you stand the risk of over-exposing an image (capturing too much light). Higher ISO ratings depend on the type of camera, with pocket
Shutter speed does allow for creative control, though, by using its own weakness against it. Moving the camera while taking a photo will cause blurring, but if you move the camera at the same speed as the subject, that subject remains in focus and only the
background blurs. It’s difficult to get right, but is an extremely useful trick for motion photography of animals, sports or motor racing. Set the shutter speed to around 1/60th of a second, and be sure to track the movement of the subject for the duration of the exposure.
cameras usually maxing out at ISO1600, while pricey digital SLR cameras can go as high as ISO6400 or ISO12800. The big deal with ISO is that the higher numbers, meaning higher sensitivity to light, bring with them a big disadvantage: noise. Even on high ISO film noise would be present, and on digital cameras it comes down to how good the electronics are. Noise manifests itself as grain on the photo, and on digital cameras this grain can also be coloured differently to the rest of the scene. A camera with a cheap 16-megapixel sensor could have an ISO rating of 800, but when those images are examined up close they contain a lot of noise, lack sharpness and don’t capture the true colours of the original scene. This is the reason manufacturers are seemingly moving backwards in the “megapixel war”. Instead of newer compact cameras having 18- or 24-megapixels to outdo previous models, they have 10- or 12-megapixels. Firstly, 10-megapixels is enough to print a 13x18cm photo, or even a full A4 page, and secondly, less pixels on a smaller sensor means less noise. It’s quite simple, too: an 18-megapixel camera the sensor has the same physical dimensions as a 10-megapixel sensor, but the 18-megapixel sensor needs to capture 18-million pixels, as opposed to the 10-million pixels on the other sensor. More pixels means more circuitry inside a very small space, and that leads to signal noise, which results in unsightly artefacts on your photos. Think of a cellphone next to a speaker, and
you’ll know how bad signal noise can be. Fewer megapixels means cleaner photos, and higher quality photos. It also means the camera manufacturers can focus on the quality of those pixels, so that cameras have better colour reproduction and sharpness. What’s the best ISO to use for a certain scene? Again, this depends on the camera. In bright daylight it’s best to use ISO100 or 200. When the sun starts setting, use ISO400. When you’re indoors, don’t be fooled into thinking that the overhead lights provide enough light. Cameras are not as advanced as our eyes, which actually make better use of light than digital sensors. ISO 800 or ISO1600 – camera dependent – will work well indoors, but to cut down on noise it would be best to use a flash.

The SX150’s 12x optical zoom makes this a good choice if you don’t have a typical shot in your repertoire – it shoots wide-angle landscapes and tight closeups with equal ease. The 14.1MP sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor capture scenes in enough detail to print posters or to crop carefully for a more eyecatching shot. SmartAuto, with advanced subject detection technology identifies the shooting scene and chooses the best settings for the conditions. Stills and video clips can be instantly reviewed on the three-inch LCD screen and helpful Hints and Tips on the screen help you find your way. The HD movie capture also records stereo sound, and switching between still and movie mode is done with just one touch of a button.
The PowerShot SX220 offers the best of both worlds: fully automatic pointand-shoot options, along with a range of manual modes for more experienced beginners who want to take more control of their camera. Other great features include an 8.1 frames per second burst shooting mode, and a Super Slow Motion Movie mode for variety. When you want to include yourself in the picture, the Smart Shutter feature lets you control the camera with a smile or a wink. A wide range of special effects lets you give free reign to the artist within. Although they are not available in the movie-recording mode, the ‘My Colours’ setting includes colour swopping and accenting, just for fun. A built-in popup flash reduces redeye for ultimate ease-of-use.
This super-slim travelzoom camera with a 25-250mm equivalent zoom lens also offers Vibration Reduction and 720p recording. Night landscape detection automatically distinguishes between hand-held shooting and shooting using a tripod, and adjusts ISO sensitivity and shutter speed as appropriate. Its top four features include less noise at high sensitivities, a motion detection function, lens-shift vibration function and a flash control system that lets you capture those breathtaking nighttime shots. A special effects mode and filter for editing let you express your creative side more than ever before. Thoughtful design rounds out this winning device.
This slim and stylish camera is a great option for travel photography, with its powerful zoom making sure that you will capture the finest details of your location, wherever you are. Nikon’s advanced vibration reduction technology means that you can use the zoom lens without worrying about blur or shaking ruining your photos. The S9100’s movie mode captures full HD 1920x1080 video with stereo sound, meaning you can capture the ambience and the image. The camera is quick and responsive, and has an automatic solution for every photo opportunity.

This basic compact digital camera is small and lightweight, but its 10x zoom lens makes a big player in this category. The camera is ideal for a first-time photographer, as its range of Exposure modes make taking high quality images easy, quick and fun. The camera’s brightly coloured casing adds to its appeal for entry-level image snappers. The camera is equipped with the Magic Filters that are featured on Olympus’ more sophisticated cameras, letting users add fun special effects to their photos immediately after taking them. The camera also captures 720p HD movies.
The SX40 is ideal for photographers who want the flexibility and control of a DSLR combined with the versatility of a wide focal range all packaged in a sleek compact body. The camera is versatile enough to capture high-speed action or distant subjects with equal clarity and crispness. The 4.5 stop optical image stabiliser identifies the shooting situation and applies the most appropriate setting from 7 modes. The DIGIC 5 processor expands the versatility of this camera, allowing image capture at up to 10.3 shots per second. The SX40 shoots respectable HD movies at the touch of a button, and the camera supports iMovie, making it easy to edit and share your films. Special effects include Fish Eye and Miniature, which also extended to movies. The SX40 can also be used with standalone flash units, lens filter adapters and other accessories.
The Finepix S2950 offers great image quality and long zoom ability in a compact, appealing package. The easyto-operate Zoom Level function allows a huge zoom range, and the mechanicallystabilised sensor and high ISO eliminates the effects of hand-shake and subject movement. The Motion Panorama shooting mode takes three successive shots, and then stitches them together in-camera, expanding your ability to capture creative shots in one easy step. The HD movie capture offers movies at 720 with sound at 30fps at the touch of a button, and the mini HDMI output connector makes it simple to play back on your HDTV. Smile detection and blink detection alert you to imperfect images, greatly-enhancing your ability to take the perfect shot.
The 30x superzoom is the most remarkable feature of the S4000, and the superfast transitions in the zoom mean that you can take extreme close-ups and wide landscapes within seconds. The mechanically stabilised 14MP sensor, paired with high ISO settings and FujiFilm’s Dual Image Stabilisation, combines to reduce the blur caused by your hands shaking or your subject’s movement. The panorama mode stitches photos together effortlessly in-camera. Advanced face recognition software lets you identify up to 8 people as favourites. The camera will recognise them, making it easy for you to find images of them to share or show. This function also works for other categories of photo, letting you search for portraits, landscapes or night shots, giving you searching superpowers on your camera!

While the HFR-206 is somewhat biased for right-handed people when it comes to controls, this is one of the first handheld video cameras that makes HD camcording affordable. Small and lightweight, the camera’s battery life is a bonus too, as images are captured onto an SD card. Its sleek design is a cunning mask for its rugged design, and its light weight means that you’re not going to get tired holding it while filming. The controls are intuitive and easy to reach, and are carefully protected by the flip-out screen. If you have a creative urge, the Video Snap button lets you make small video snippets of up to 8 seconds, compile a playlist, add some music and create a fun music video. Its ability to take great quality still images adds to its appeal.
This standard definition camcorder combines stylish pocket-sized design with superior image quality, with its wide range of imaging features that are easy to use – even for novice moviemakers. The strong processing power and the super sexy zoom work together to get you close to your subject without losing the shot. The pre-record function lets you capture the action three seconds before you push the record memory, in a buffer memory, and the Dual Shot mode lets you capture movies or stills without having to switch modes. With 12 different scene options at your fingertips, you’ll easily capture the action around you!
The SX21 is a lightweight standard definition digital camera with a powerful zoom that is compact enough to take travelling with you. One of its highlights is how easy it is to get your movies off the device: you can shoot directly onto a memory stick, or you can share data quickly via Sony’s Direct Copy technology that lets you save your movies directly onto a hard drive, or onto a DVD via a burner. The LED light is a great help in low light situations, and stereo sound recording with a zoom microphone makes sure that you capture every element of an event. Advanced face detection software recognises up to 8 faces in one scene, to ensure sharp focus at all times.
The Handycam PJ10 won “The Best of Consumer Electronics Show 2011” and it’s not hard to see why. Packed with features, including a wide range of auto program options and handholding features, the PJ10 lets you share your movies quickly and easily with its built-in projector. The wide angle lens and powerful zoom give you the power to capture any action you choose, while the Golf Shot feature captures an action sequence in stills for you to be able to choose the best shot. Cameras are sensitive bits of kit, so here are a few tricks to help you keep them in tip-top condition.
Keep it
clean M
aintaining a camera, whether it’s a cheap compact, a mid-range bridge camera or an expensive dSLR with a big lens, is a matter of common sense. According to professional photographers, that is, but that’s based on years of experience. Beginners may need a bit of help getting it right, so we’ve put together this brief introduction to the basics.
14 | HARDWARE BuyER’s guiDE | NovEmBER 2011
CamEra maiNTENaNCE
Check your batteries Cameras and batteries are inseparable, so it’s wise to make sure you have a spare battery when you leave home, camera in hand, and that your main set is charged and ready to rock. The last thing anyone needs is no battery power at crucial moments. It’s also a good idea to not leave the batteries in your camera when storing it for extended periods. Remove batteries and put them in a separate case, just for safety’s sake.
Lenses Memory Cards
Like batteries, it always pays to have more memory cards with you than you think you’re going to need. If you know you love taking pictures at family events, birthdays, get-togethers at friends’ homes, it’s smart to have a whole stack of memory cards on hand. It’s also smart to consider phasing out older cards and replacing them with faster cards that have more capacity. Memory cards are cheap these days, even the 16GB and 32GB varieties.
Cleaning lenses requires a handheld blower, a microfiber cloth and lens cleaning fluid. We recommend blowing dust and other tiny particles off the lens using the handheld blower, or a can of compressed air. Just be careful to only use compressed air on the lens, as other parts of the camera are too sensitive for the strength of the air blast. Fingerprints found on the lens can be removed using small circular movements of the microfiber cloth. If you find dirt that won’t come off with a quick wipe of the cloth, pour a few drops of lens cleaning fluid onto the cloth and try again.
Cleanliness is next to… Cleaning your camera equipment is as important to the camera’s life span as it is to great shots. Nobody wants amazing pictures marred by a bit of dirt or blurred
because of a fingerprint on the lens, and a camera that is cleaned regularly is more likely to give many years of service than one that gets ignored. Here’s how to go about it.
TOP TIP Never apply any fluid – not even cleaning fluid directly to a lens, as that may potentially damage it.
SLR Sensors One of the many appeals of Digital SLRs is that they can use multiple lenses, but the process of doing so involves opening the camera’s body up to the elements. It’s possible for dust to get in this way and settle on the camera’s CMOS or CCD sensor, which can be difficult to clean. It’s recommended to follow the instruction manual’s directions on how to get the camera into “Sensor Cleaning Mode”, and then attempt to blow any dust you see off with a hand blower. If this is not successful, you can try using sensor swabs dipped in sensor cleaning solution (available from specialty camera shops). Just be very, very careful here – this is the most sensitive part of the camera and any mistakes here could cost you a lot of money. If you’re at all uncertain, perhaps taking your camera to a professional for a clean is the best approach.
SLR Bodies The outside of your camera is probably what will need cleaning most often. By doing the following, you’ll ensure your camera stays in tip-top condition for many years. 1. Keep your camera in a bag. You can even put it in a sealable plastic bag before sliding it into one made from material for an extra layer of protection. 2. Always use lens caps when the camera is not in use. 3. Give the outside a wipe with a micro-fibre cloth every now and then. 4. Put packets of silica in the bag with your camera to absorb moisture. These often come with other products, like shoes and electronics; don’t throw them away, rather put them with your camera. 5. When you change lenses, do it quickly, but not so quick that you risk dropping the lens. 6. A cleaning by a professional is always an option, even if it is more expensive than doing it yourself. If you follow these simple outlines, your camera will give you many years of good service. Remember, taking great pictures sometimes means putting yourself and your camera in not-so-clean places, so a good grasp on how to clean your equipment properly is essential.

y far the most popular memory card format today is SDHC, which stands for Secure Digital High Capacity. These cards are available in sizes from 2GB to 32GB. A newer format, called SDXC (the X stands for eXtended), comes in sizes starting at 32GB, all the way up to 2TB. Memory cards are needed in both still and video cameras to record pictures and video, and buying the right one for the application they’re needed for is vital to a satisfying user experience.
All cards are not created equal Memory cards are not all the same price for the same capacity, however, because they can differ in speed. Faster cards – needed for recording High Definition movies and taking very large images – are always going to be more expensive. While you can get a 16GB SDHC card for around R400, it will keep you waiting for your photo to save a lot longer than a R1200 performance-class 16GB card will. A fast memory card is vital for highresolution burst shots taken with DSLR cameras, for example.
Eye-Fi with My Little Eye You’ll almost certainly have spotted “Eye-Fi” in that list. It’s a family of SD cards that has Wi-Fi capabilities built-in, which means you can join any wireless network in range, through your camera, without needing to connect to a PC. This enables instant uploads of images to popular websites like Flickr and Facebook right from your camera. If you’re on the road, you can connect to other Wi-Fi devices (smartphones, tablets) using the Eye-Fi card, and transfer your photos there in an instant. Not all cameras support Eye-Fi, though, so be sure to check before buying.

hand
There are lots of memory cards out there, ranging quite dramatically in price, speed and capacity. Read our guide to find out more about the nuances of this versatile storage technology.
Types of SD Cards and their capacities • SD: Up to 2GB • SDHC: Up to 32GB • MicroSD: Up to 32GB • SDXC: From 32GB up to 2TB • Eye-Fi : Up to 8GB
Capacity vs. speed When buying memory cards, it’s advisable to decide beforehand if speed or capacity is more important, and choose accordingly. If speed isn’t vital, then go for the card with the highest storage capacity your budget will allow. If you love shooting in burst mode, then we strongly advise cards from SanDisk’s Ultra and Extreme ranges, as these can write data at speeds of 20MB/s and 30MB/s respectively.

If you’ve invested in an SLr to help take higherquality photos, you’ll want to make sure you have the right lenses. Whether it’s an entry-level SLr or a multi-megapixel monster, a good bit of glass goes a long way.
Lens I
love
f you’ve only just purchased, or decided to purchase, an SLR camera, there is a good chance that it ships with a kit lens, or two kit lenses. These are the most basic, functional lenses you need to get started, but there’s a lot more to photography than what comes in the box. You get different kinds of lenses. Wide angle lenses, telephoto lenses, zoom lenses and prime lenses. But first, let’s start by demystifying focal lengths…
Crop ratios When SLR cameras were still using 35mm film, a 50mm lens would be a 50mm focal length. Now that we have digital SLR cameras, that 50mm lens is actually an 80mm lens. The reason for this is that the sensors on most dSLR cameras are slightly smaller than the frame on 35mm film, something known as a cropped sensor, and the maths behind this crop factor means that the lens now has a longer focal length than normal. The crop factor for Canon cameras is 1.6x, and for Nikon and Sony cameras it is 1.5x.
Types of lenses Prime:
A type of lens with a fixed focal length, but usually a very low (good) aperture value. They’re pricy, but produce excellent results.
Zoom:
General-purpose lenses. They can be adjusted to various focal lengths, but don’t always have great aperture values.
Wide-angle:
Any lens that has a wide field of view, usually 10mm (fisheye) to 50mm. Great for general photography and landscapes.
Telephoto:
A lens that gets you closer to the subject through a long focal length. Starts at 85mm, goes all the way to 1200mm (if you have the money). Great for wildlife, sports and spying.
18 | cAmERAs BuyER’s guiDE | NovEmBER 2011
Prime lenses usually have apertures starting at f/1.2 or f1.8. These are great for low light. Zoom lenses suffer, with minimum apertures between f/4.5 and f/6.3. The more you spend, the lower this number goes.
Lens features Some lenses have built-in image stabilisers. This is a very clever technology that helps reduce shake, enabling you to take blur-free photos in light conditions that are less than ideal. Premium lenses will also feature fast, silent focus motors, and internal focusing – this means that external elements of the lens don’t move when it focuses.
Lens mounts If you’re buying a third party lens, from companies Sigma or Tamron, make sure the lens you buy has the mount for your specific camera body. Nikon, Sony and Canon all have different mounts.

It allows the photographer to compress perspective and restrict depth of field, giving a professional feel to carefully-composed photographs. The fully-integrated AF motor makes focusing quick and responsive, and Canon has paid special attention to ensuring the noise of the autofocus motor is subtle and subdued.
This versatile lens is compact and affordable, and offers great performance when shooting anything from portraits to long-distance subjects such as sports or wildlife. The Image Stabiliser function means that this is a good choice if you’re expecting to shoot in low light, or you don’t possess the steady hands of a surgeon. The lens’s build quality is robust in spite of its light weight, but of course won’t stand up to being dropped. This lens is a good candidate to help budding snappers take that next step up the photography ladder.
This superzoom lens is designed to be a hard worker, and its robust design will stand it in good stead. It’s not just tough – it’s environment-friendly too, with lead-free glass used in its construction. The zoom ratio achieves an equivalent of 29-320mm, a champ in a lens of this size and price. Optical image stabilisation helps you capture the perfect shot, whether it’s a wide landscape or a tight close-up, ensuring that neither shaky hands nor low light will spoil the view.

Investing in a high-end DSLR is a brave investment, and you should do all that you can to care for it. This custommoulded silicone case will do the trick, protecting your 1100D’s body from everyday bumps and scratches while still providing easy access to controls and memory card slots. It’s splashproof, scratch-resistant and shockproof and cradles every nook and cranny of the 1100D’s body in its protective embrace.
Sunpak UV filters add clarity and sharpness to your DSLR images by eliminating the effects of this damaging light on your photographs. They help reduce glare in high-contrast situations and prevent lens flares from ruining your shots. Over and above their technical merits, filters are a great way to protect the lens of your DSLR. They are easy to remove and clean, making sure that your photographs aren’t marred by unwanted scratches or bits of dirt on your lens.
This 16GB Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) card offers quick read and write times that satisfy two very important needs when it comes to shooting HD video and taking high-resolution photos: speed and capacity. The card’s 20MB/s write speed means less downtime between burst-mode shots as it saves the imaging data to the card faster than slower-rated cards, and 16GB of capacity means many hours of HD footage can be taken without fear of running out of space. While there are faster, higher-capacity cards out there, this one offers an excellent compromise in terms of price, capacity and overall performance.
The SanDisk Ultra memory card range offers rugged high performance in diverse conditions: whether it’s extremely hot or freezing cold, you will be able to capture your images, under any conditions. This card is ideal for photographers that take plenty of highresolution photos, but who don’t mind waiting a few seconds longer for them to save than they would with a faster card. High capacity means you can capture all the day’s events without stopping to download – essential for a photographer on the move, and the slightly lower speed than its Extreme siblings results in a slightly lower price at the till.

An affordable digital photoframe, the Hama lets you view your photographic masterpieces without the hassle of having them printed and framed. Cost effective and versatile, it makes a great gift too.
The HP photo frame offers a variety of photo-viewing options, and the device’s appealing design adds to the aesthetic of your home. You can choose the aspect ratio to display images – in their original format or to use the whole screen. Choose to display your photos by file name or date to make sure you show the right ones! You can add music to your slide show for full multimedia entertainment.
This cost-effective digital photoframe offers all the functionality you need to display your photographs in pride of place. Easy to use and easy on the eye, it has everything you need to share your photographs with loved ones.
If you thought that camera accessories couldn’t be fun – think again. The Gorillapod lets your camera do pretty much what its namesake would be able to: it gives you the ability to place your camera just about anywhere you want it, whether that’s on a flat surface or tangled around a tree branch. The flexible legs are designed to grip, and while this tripod is not intended to carry heavy DSLRs, it will certainly add to the impact of photos taken with a compact digital camera.

This lightweight tripod is sturdy enough to use with most compact cameras, DSLRs and camcorders. It’s compact enough to use when you’re travelling, but serious enough to use for most of your photography needs. A minor flaw is that it doesn’t fold nearly as flat as some older Manfrotto models were capable of which limits its usefulness for photographers who like getting low to the ground. Its ball-andsocket head has been upgraded, though, and has two modes, movie and photo, which allow for different movement ranges. The locking mechanism that keeps the head in place is also more solid than before. The tripod’s centre column extends upwards to provide more height, and there is a locking plate that connects to the underside of the camera, which then locks into position on the head. This is a very competent, well-made tripod, and a great buy for photographers who are just starting out.
This stable and easy to use tripod offers you a variety of standing positions and heights on a solid stable foundation. The three way head allows panoramic rotation, which means you will be able to shoot sharp images and videos without any hitches. The tripod can carry a maximum weight load of 3.5kg, so it’s ideal for cameras with big lenses. Manfrotto’s quick-release head design is present here too, offering a very convenient mechanism for getting cameras on and off the tripod.
This strong yet lightweight tripod is robust enough to hold heavier DSLR cameras or video recorders, helping you capture crisp images in low-light conditions, and taking the weight off you when it comes to heavy lenses. The quick release plate makes it easy to dismantle after a day’s shooting, and the head glides beautifully as it rotates, resulting in extremely smooth, judderfree panning. The built-in bubble level provides immediate notification of just how level the camera is, which often comes in handy when attempting to line shots up.
This basic tripod offers you a variety of standing positions and heights on a solid stable foundation. The threeway head allows panoramic rotation, helping you to shoot razor-sharp images and videos with smooth pans. It’s not the very best tripod available, but it’s affordable and will get the job of stabilising compact and DSLR cameras done with minimal fuss. The package includes a carry-bag and a built-in spirit level that will help to establish when the camera is positioned correctly. It’s not expensive, and will easily suit beginner photographers who are testing the waters to see if the hobby warrants further commitment.

Ion Audio’s new Pics 2 PC is an image scanner that can convert all of your old photos, slides and negatives into digital images. All you need to do is install the included software and connect the device to your PC using a standard USB cable, then insert your old images and use the software to scan them into a digital format of your choice. Pics 2 PC scans 35mm negatives and slides as well as physical photographs up to 5x7 inches.
Slides 2 PC Express is a fun, fast and easy way to transfer all your old 35mm slides and negatives to your PC. Setting up requires no drivers at all - simply plug it in to an available USB port - and the device works on both PCs and Macs. Are all your old memories sitting at your parents’ place? Simply pick the Slides 2 PC Express device up and go, its compact build makes it very easy to transport. With scans that take less than 2 seconds, it’s easy and fast to recapture those old images and transport them to the digital age.
Professionals looking for a high-quality photo and negative scanner that doesn’t need a PC or Mac to operate should take a closer look at Hama’s new Combo Photo Scanner. It scans photos (10 x 15cm and smaller) in 12 seconds, and can scan an entire strip of 6 negatives in 60 seconds at 1200dpi. The results can be saved to an SD card without any need for a PC. When a PC is used, the accompanying software can help make things easier by, for example, separating those scanned negatives into individual image files.
Clearly, there are times when scanning photos to a memory stick is extremely urgent: Hama has a new A6-sized portable photo scanner that can scan up to 150 images before running out of battery power. It can be taken with you wherever you go and will, presumably, meet any on-the-go photoscanning need that may present itself. Recharging is done by connecting to a PC over USB, and the scanner can also scan to a PC as well as directly to a digital photo frame.
