Bloomingdale's HOT Fall 2014

Page 1

It started with a seemingly simple idea—a store like no other should be filled with pieces like no other. And so, we embarked on a serious fashion quest with one unfailing goal: to get the best designers in the world (many of whom began their careers here, by the way) to create one-of-a-kind capsule collections just for us. Our journey ended up spanning the globe, and our Fashion Directors put their hearts and souls into collaborating with some of their favorite fashion icons— from an afternoon spent sketching new looks with Ms. Donna Karan’s people to actually building necklaces in Milan with Marco Bicego to a casual conversation during an old-fashioned shave in the barbershop down Freeman Alley. (And yes, in one extreme case, we may have elbowed a few top fashion editors out of the way so that we could literally snatch a look off the Sonia Rykiel runway in Paris…but we try not to talk about that very often.) We’re thrilled to present you with the result: over 1,000 absolutely original, ridiculously stylish, incredibly collectible pieces that you won’t find anywhere else— all in one store. They’re the über representation of both Bloomingdale’s and the brands we love. They’re a celebration of everything that makes fashion fun. They are…100% Bloomingdale’s.

THEORY We have a theory about our capsule collection from Theory: You’ve never seen anything like it. Of course there are certain elements that you can count on when a garment has “Theory” on the label—it’s cool, minimalist and can be styled endless ways. But there are also myriad special details that make this capsule completely unique. Effortless, beautiful blouses are adorned with big bows— meant to remain untied. A sleek, stylish pencil skirt is cast in supple leather, with an edgy zipper right up the front. And our personal favorite? Flared trousers in a refined tweed print (and with a matching top, to boot). We consider each piece to be iconic Theory, updated with a splash of our own Bloomingdale’s irreverence. Only Ours Gray bouclé coat, $595. Tweed skirt, $255. Ivory silk contrast tie blouse, $215. Black tuxedo pant, $265. Tweed printed silk blouse, $295. Tweed pant, $335. Purple sweater, also in light gray, $315. Black leather skirt, $825. All, Y.E.S. Contemporary Sportswear.

CYNTHIA ROWLEY 8

When the editors of the top fashion magazines in the country exclaim, “I recognize that print!” upon being presented with what we thought was a completely original design, it’s either a very good thing or a fashion disaster. In this case, it was the former. (Phew!) Turns out the print in question was inspired by the coffee table in Cynthia Rowley’s downtown studio—which is decorated with trinkets from the office junk drawer— and some of these insiders’ insiders had

been there on more than one occasion. Yes, those are her sunglasses that you’ll see strewn somewhere around the waistline of our adorable exclusive dress, which is just one piece from a capsule collection that’s full of knockout prints, all done in incredibly flattering neoprene. Only Ours Space junk print dress, $395. Spacedye print cropped shell, $195; and slim skirt, $225. Moon flower print short-sleeve sweatshirt, $225; and leggings, $245. All, Elements in Y.E.S. Contemporary Sportswear. Select stores.

K AREN MILLEN It all began with our Fashion Director’s fall color obsession— deep tomato red. She started seeing it at shows, on the red carpet…here, there and everywhere (that’s anywhere). One day, she whispered it to the Creative Director at Karen Millen, and the next thing you know, a capsule was born. They striped, tipped and—in one case—splashed our color crush du jour onto dresses, skirts and blazers. And while they designed the collection just for us, it’s also incredibly Karen Millen, meaning it has some of the finest leatherwork in the world. Speaking of which, those of you lucky enough to live within shopping-distance of our 59th Street flagship (and those of you smart enough to book a flight for the express purpose of visiting it) absolutely must stop by our new Karen Millen leather atelier for your own one-of-a-kind design. It’s also new for fall, completely custom and 100% Bloomingdale’s. Just be careful what you whisper…you never know what it’ll end up inspiring. Only Ours Red dress with pleats, $399. Gray London tailored trench coat, $1,800. Gray jersey and faux leather dress, $399. All, Y.E.S. Contemporary Sportswear.

AQUA GL A M Our Fashion Directors had a vision, and let’s just say it included feathers. And sequins. And fringe. And basically any other totally glam thing you could possibly imagine. Inspired by everything from street style to the seriously seductive gowns in a certain ’70s-centric movie (whose on-set stylist we are now stalking on Instagram), the collection defines what we love about fall fashion: you can be as gutsy, glitzy and glamorous as you want to be, any time you want. Each piece received special design attention from our intrepid Fashion Directors—from a lamé jumpsuit to a metallic tuxedo blazer to a fringe dress that didn’t fail to make them say, “Oh. My. God.” every time they reviewed the sample. We think it’s safe to say this 100% collection was made with 100% love. Oh, and a little bit of glitter. Only Ours Black lamé surplus top, $88. Black feather miniskirt, $188. Black cold shoulder top, $88. Storm gray asymmetrical zip-front brocade pencil skirt, $128. Gold brocade tuxedo jacket, $198. Black open-back fringe dress, $148. Magenta rose brocade dress, $158. Black illusion V-neck top, $78. Black satin ankle pant, $158. Pewter and black lamé surplus jumpsuit, $168. All, Y.E.S. Contemporary Sportswear.

ELIE TAHAR I It’s not every day that you get to sit down with the Elie Tahari after his spectacular runway presentation and design your own exclusive mini version of the collection. (And it’s not every designer who’d take the time to do it, either.) But we did. And he did. And boy was it worth it. We started with the chic color gradation we saw in his show—the collection went from beautiful beige to rich black—to maintain his original vision. Then we handpicked key pieces from the line and carefully tweaked each one with Mr. Tahari to make it uniquely ours. We really went for it too—a breathtaking shearling coat, a super soft suede dress and the most luxe details we could think of (pony hair accents anyone?) until, after months of painstaking work, it was done. A lineup of five stunning head-to-toe looks that you will only see at Bloomingdale’s. Only Ours Light blue mohair sweater, $398. Bullet gray jersey pant with leather pockets, $248. Honey maple suede shearling coat, $2,498. Fresh pearl silk blouse with leather collar and chain detail, $348. Nutmeg knit pant, $198. Black pony hair jacket with knit collar, $1,498. Black cashmere sweater with georgette underlay, also in taupe, $348. Black leather skirt with zip details, $698. Taupe cashmere sweater with georgette underlay, also in black, $348. Pale oak silk printed pant, $298. Gunpowder gray suede dress, $798. All, The New View. Select stores.

DK NY When we started scheming and sketching with Donna Karan and her DKNY team for our 100% Bloomingdale’s collaboration, we had one major request: give us the cold shoulder, please! We’ve been obsessed with this design detail—sleeves with an opening at the shoulder, revealing a hint of skin—for as long as we can remember, and no one does it like DKNY. Luckily for us, they were more than happy to oblige. The team took their signature shoulder and incorporated it into cutting-edge silhouettes, resulting in a marriage as timeless and timely as Donna Karan and New York. The collection mixes and matches a million ways, drapes like a dream and cannot be found anywhere else on the planet. We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the 25th birthday of an iconic NYC brand. Only Ours Black leather moto jacket, $795. Black long-sleeve floral lace dress, $295. Black wool cowlneck dress with cutout shoulders, $235. Black reversible shearling vest, $1,200. White tunic, also in pink, $235. Black ponte leggings with satin side seam, $125. Black and gold foil lace tee, $195; and skirt, $235. All, The New View. Select stores.

SALVATOR E FER R AGAMO Fiamma. It’s the name of Salvatore Ferragamo’s eldest daughter, it means flame in Italian, and—as you’ve probably seen if you’ve been devouring the runway recaps like we have—it’s the exceptionally chic new collection from the house of Ferragamo. When we saw this bag (a very of-the-moment bowler silhouette) walk the runway in Milan, we knew it had to be 100% Bloomingdale’s. And we were lucky enough to get it in a gorgeous burnt red color (dare we call it flame?), which is not-so-coincidentally one of the trends we’ve been obsessing over this season. We’re over the moon for our custom color, and we know you will be, too. Get it while it’s haute. Only Ours Copper leather Fiamma bowler bag with gold metallic hardware, $2,950. Cul de Sac Handbags. Select stores. Cacao brown croc-embossed leather bootie with gold hardware, $1,150. Designer Shoe Salon.

GUCCI

When we saw the bag that Gucci had chosen for us, we actually jumped out of our desk chairs and simultaneously screamed: “It’s red!” We couldn’t believe the sartorial serendipity: red was the color we had deemed our signature for the season (as you’ll discover on page 158, we’re pretty infatuated with cherry red gowns), and here was a slice of red perfection, straight

from the Gucci headquarters. And just to make sure everyone knows exactly where it came from, Gucci sewed a Bloomingdale’s plaque into the lining: a super chic tribute to the perfect marriage of two iconic brands (if we do say so ourselves). Only Ours Red shoulder bag, $1,590. Red mini shoulder bag, $895. Designer Handbags. Select stores.

hematite, and—because we can’t not add sparkle—a healthy dose of crystals. It’s a lot Bittar (organic, original) and a lot Bloomie’s (show-stopping, shimmering). And it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before—that we can promise. Only Ours Gold-plated and crystal two-tone link pyrite doublet statement necklace, $325. Fashion Accessories. Select stores.

ALEXIS BITTAR

We linked up (pun intended) with Alexis Bittar to develop our dream jewelry: a set of pieces that takes everything we love about Bittar and mixes them all together to create one fabulous collection. After endless hours matching metals and pining over pavé in his studio, we finally landed on the ultimate Bittar/ Bloomie’s combo: classic gold and hip

MARC BY MARC JACOBS When we stepped into the Marc by Marc Jacobs showroom and saw an entire backlit wall of bags, we were officially smitten. When we heard that the designs that had captured our hearts (the perfectly boxy, camera bag-inspired silhouettes that had just gone down the runway) could be Only Ours in the hues and patterns of our choosing, we were officially obsessed. So we swapped swatches and settled on sizes with the Marc team, and came out with 15 incredible bags in raucously cool colors and prints—a couple of which were inspired by the same lush, moody florals that we loved in so many of the ready-to-wear collections. We know it’s hard to choose just one, so why not go for the whole wall? We did, and we couldn’t be happier about it. Only Ours Patent green reflector crossbody, also in black patent leather, red checker reflective, blue reflector, $228; and floral, $248. Gray floral leather messenger, $398; also in faded aluminum, orange and black patent leather, $378. MARCO BICEGO Before our Fashion Directors could get to designing our collection with Marco Bicego (that’s right, they designed a collection with Marco Bicego), he wanted to show them around the factory. Which happened to be in Vicenza, Italy. Which happened to be one of the most beautiful places, well, ever. After witnessing the whole process and meeting the skilled craftspeople who so carefully make Bicego’s jewels, they got down to brass tacks. They got to dig through Bicego’s bead jar and mix and match their favorite metals, to pull together a whole new Bicego capsule from start to finish. They settled on a blue chalcedony stone (reminiscent of the gorgeous candy-colored hues that had popped up all through Fashion Week), and an all-new, high-gloss finish (Bicego’s trademark is matte). We must say that the trip to Vicenza was worth it—we’ve got a molto elegante new collection to prove it. Only Ours Siviglia Collection. All, 18k hand-engraved yellow gold. 36" necklace, $3,760. Chalcedony 36" necklace, $3,470. 18" necklace, $1,680. Fine Jewelry.

IPPOLITA

When you think of Ippolita, you probably think of gleaming, colorful stones and gorgeous chains in silver and gold—which is what we expected when we set out to create a one-of-a-kind collection with her. But no. Ippolita is a woman of constant surprises, and she came to us with an entirely original idea: charms. And not just any charms, but special black and white charms, made just for us, in the iconic Bloomingdale’s color scheme. We were wholeheartedly on board, especially since we had recently been to her showroom, where we saw an enormous necklace adorned with charms

she had gathered throughout her career, each with their own personal meaning. For us she created something just as meaningful: a medley of collectible charms that will remind everyone who wears them of both Ippolita and Bloomingdale’s—a very charming twosome, we’re sure you’ll agree. Only Ours All, sterling silver. Small oval link charm bracelet, $595. Small oval link charm bracelet with diamonds, .63 ct.t.w., $2,995. Both shown with assorted black onyx and white shell doublet charms, $495 each. Butterfly charm with diamonds, .39 ct.t.w., $1,995. Lucky clover charm with diamonds, .31 ct.t.w., $1,595. Feather charm with diamonds, .20 ct.t.w., $1,195. Heart charm with diamonds, .10 ct.t.w., $695. Fine Jewelry.

TORY BURCH

Tor y Burch did the unprecedented: they built us a brand new last. For those of you not well-versed in shoe terminology, that’s the form around which a shoe is built. In other words: it’s a pretty big deal. The boot that was born from said last was also unprecedented. With its stacked heel,

killer wrap detail and gunmetal studs, we all agree that this 100% Bloomie’s bootie 100% rocks, and we’re pretty confident it has the potential to gather the same epic following as her iconic double T moniker. Only Ours Gray leather bootie with studs, $450. Women’s Shoes. Select stores.

STUART W EITZMAN Our obsession with tall, slouchy boots began (okay, struck us like a bolt of fashion lightning) when we saw the absolute perfect pair on the Stuart Weitzman runway. (We should’ve known Stuart would be the one to get us hooked on something new—he’s one of the few shoe designers to turn us on to the trends before they even start.) When we got word that he would let us pluck that same oh-soright-now boot that we fell in love with right off the line, and have it all to ourselves, we practically squealed with delight. We plan on pairing it with a chunky sweater and an over-the-knee skirt and wearing that look, which we’re referring to as our new uniform, as often as humanly possible. Only Ours Black leather high-heel boot, $695. Women’s Shoes.
