Reunions…Do you remember that time when we...? Acne. Don’t you think I suffered enough at 17?!

Ok, I have to admit it … I went to my 30-year high school reunion and thoroughly enjoyed it. I fear the real reason I skipped my 10 and 20-year reunions was because I wasn’t perfect. I wanted to go back when I was HUGELY successful and skinny and married and flashing a few diamonds and driving a cool-ass car and able to talk about all my world travels, and when I had clear skin. But, instead I went and I was just me. I figured if I waited for a window of opportunity where my skin was actually clear, I wouldn’t ever be able to travel again. Hello my friend Adult

One of my favorite moments at this hometown extravaganza was when I was checking in and they announced that they had run out of name tags. This forced people to put on their reading glasses and look through old yearbooks just to figure out who everyone was. I’d say the gals held up a bit better than the boys, but really, how many guys from Upper Michigan would think to hit the spa before they came. The girls tanned, pedicured, curled lashes, and bought new dresses. The boys … well, I think some of them had spouses who forced them to shave. And I’m pretty sure some of them were wearing their best “church shorts.” There were aluminum pans chocked full o’ meatballs and kegs of beer. There was classic ‘80s hair-band music. What more do you really need? I was disappointed, however, that there were no hook-ups with drunken classmates. Isn’t that mandatory for a reunion? Don’t couples usually break up after these things when one partner goes back to

Landscape

the “love of their life” from the blessed days of yore? Also known as, “The Days Before You Had a Mortgage.” One of the things that amazed me the most was the kids who were really messed up in their teens and had turned into “Bible beaters.” How can your Facebook page list your favorite book as “The Bible” when last time I saw you, you were so drunk you had to be carried out of Algebra class over the teacher’s shoulder while screaming streams of obscenities? Why the dramatic shift? Oh … you had kids. Well, good for you. Do they by any chance know you were the biggest pot dealer in our hometown? Did you share with the kiddos the prom pics that were taken right before you threw up Lambrusco on the white dress you borrowed? I bet your spawn were chuckling heartily when you told them about all the pregnancy scares. And who could forget the lime vodka and Coke cocktails you mixed in the bathroom of the medical center across the street? Don’t worry … I’m sure your kids will stay on the closed campus and study during their lunch hours.

Part 2

Here are just a few of the gems I learned at my reunion: • I got Becky violently drunk on vodka punch at Homecoming float making. • I got Debbie high for the first time at the ice rink. • I told Danette never to touch her face while playing basketball as it would ruin her skin. • I was the one who decided the entire basketball team should go skinny-dipping before getting back on the bus. • I was only cool after Rhonda told me that the suede Adidas with the stripes were what I should be wearing. • And according to Betsy, I was always “one funny son-of-ab*%$@.” Memories … like the corners of our minds. Sometimes the “misty, water-colored memories” are best left alone. — Mary Closner is a big fan of the e.e. cummings saying, “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.”

Friendship: 2 Cancer: 0 Dual powers of joy and friendship win out over the contender – cancer

With a radiant outlook on life, the Faribault woman will no doubt continue to share that joy with others like her support system of family members and friends. “I get a do-over. I’m one of the lucky ones,” said Nicole.

By Brenda K.M. Ward Nicole Zrust says life is all about the experiences. This 35-year-old woman even considers her battle with breast cancer a gift – a second chance at life. “I get a do-over. I’m one of the lucky ones,” said Nicole. With a radiant outlook on life, the Faribault woman will no doubt continue to share that joy with others like her support system of family members and friends – including her husband, Eric; three children, Brooklyn, age 7, Morgan, age 3, and Piper who is just 1 year old; and her closest friend, Heidi Kubes, who has been there with her from the beginning of the journey. “Heidi was the only one I could text or call and say, ‘I’m losing my mind. I don’t know if I can do this.’ She would say, ‘Yes, you can.’ Without Heidi there, my experience with cancer would probably have been nearly unmanageable,” said Nicole.

6 Girlfriends.mn Fall Fashion 2012

“For Nicole to get cancer – I never thought I’d see it this close up,” said Heidi. “Then we started making light of it. We both knew underneath that she would be OK – she just had to get through the little milestones.”

The journey of cancer It was Valentine’s Day of this year when Nicole felt a lump in her left breast while showering after a workout at the gym. She saw her doctor who sent her right to radiology for a biopsy; two very long days later, the results were in. The nurse called Nicole back with a positive diagnosis: invasive ductus carcinoma. “I was sitting at home with the kids and just wasn’t prepared to hear that,” said Nicole. “The nurse said, ‘Are you OK?’ I said, ‘No.’” After an MRI scan revealed another cancerous area on the same breast, Nicole immediately knew that she would have a mastectomy.

“I was done with (my breasts),” she said. “I had my kids – I didn’t need them anymore.” With the guidance of an “amazing” oncologist, in March both breasts were removed, and chemotherapy began in April. “The surgery never frightened me,” said Nicole. “But later when I looked in the mirror and saw myself with no boobs, no hair – I thought, I’m not really a woman. For about a two-week period I felt bad about myself. Then I pulled out of it.” Nicole says she viewed the cancer as more of an inconvenience than anything else. “I realize that I don’t have any control over this. I have to deal with it,” she said. “Luckily it’s only taken away one year of my life.” Now finished with chemo and on an estrogen blocking drug, PET scans show no signs of cancer remaining in her body, and with her hair beginning to grow back, she looks forward to trying out new hairstyles that she otherwise would never have had.

The final step in her cancer journey: breast implant surgery. “The silver lining is that I get to have nice, new young boobs,” said Nicole.

Supporting Nicole As with many people who endure a health setback, for Nicole finances came to mind – without the ability to work, she feared the loss of the family savings or even their house. But Heidi stepped up to help ease her friend’s fears. Heidi organized a fundraiser held April 28 at the Elks Club in Faribault. With live and silent auctions, live bands, donated food and raffle items, the community came together in support of the Zrust family. Even local elementary school kids decorated white placemats with uplifting messages for use at the benefit, while Heidi created a “Hot Men of Faribault” calendar to sell. Nicole’s dad shaved off his “gorgeous, thick” hair that night – a sacrifice worth $800 they found. The fundraising efforts – including an account for donations set up by Affinity Credit Union – were a success, to say the least. “At the end of the night, I called Nicole and said, ‘I’m sitting on the floor surrounded by money,’” said Kubes. With a hope of raising $10,000, the end total resulted in an astonishing $24,000. “People rallied. I was very humbled,” said Nicole.>>>

The photos will be made into a book, to mark this period of time that has forever changed Nicole’s life. “Basically, it makes you look at the simple side of everything, the big picture – it’s all about the experiences,” said Nicole. “Getting cancer has been a gift. It’s a second chance to do everything again.” G

Making memories As a professional photographer, Heidi has also given her friend another gift – a photographic recollection of the cancer experience. “I came over to her house the morning of the surgery and said, ‘I need some before pictures,’” said Heidi, who also took pictures of Nicole’s family and friends in the waiting room of Fairview Hospital. Nicole – surprised – complied and had fun with her first topless photo shoot. Later came “after” pictures of her with no breasts. “That was horrible for me to see. I was just bawling,” said Heidi. “Nicole was smiling.”

It helps bring you back to the best you can be as you’re finding your ‘new normal.’”

Fall Fashion What’s in for fall fashion By Brenda K.M. Ward If you’ve ever considered buying a wool dress in pink flambé but just didn’t know if you had the panache to pull it off, the time may be just right. Consider fall a great season to summon your inner Sarah Jessica Parker and revamp your wardrobe, clearing out dated pieces and revitalizing your look with fresh color and style. Glamour magazine suggests purchasing pieces with a heavy Baroque or colorblocking pattern, pullover sweaters, or most anything in oxblood color; while Elle’s fall shopping list includes loose-knit sweaters, luxurious accessories and denim jeans, vests, shirts and dresses. From head to toe, this season’s looks vary to fit any woman, any shape. And if you need help, don’t be shy – ask the advice of storeowners who seek out the most fitting styles for their customers at market in cities like Las Vegas, New York City and Minneapolis.

Rare Pair Krin Finger, owner What’s a new trend for this fall? The new color trends are ageless and timeless. Get lots of wear out of any jewel tones that you invest in this season. Sapphire, ruby and emerald add richness and depth to your cool weather wardrobe. What’s a good way to mix and match fall colors? Mix and match earthy and autumnal colors with embroidery and tapestry. Layer with thermals, scarves and capes. What footwear is in for the fall? Boots! Invest in a pair, from ankle boots to knee high boots – just be sure they are comfortable. Wear boots with a pair of patterned knee socks for warmth and comfort. What’s one versatile piece you recommend having in a wardrobe? A great fitting pair of denim jeans to go with your new boots.

By buying colors you love, you can go back and forth by adding scarves, shells, etc.

What’s a new trend for this fall? Color continues to be very important – from denim to sweaters to dresses. Popular colors for fall are forecasted to be warm neons complimented with beachy pastels. “Tangerine Tango” has been named the official color of 2012, giving life to the upcoming season.

What is a good way to mix and match fall colors? Add color by adding little things like a scarf, purse, tights or a piece of jewelry. Make a statement by putting a bold color with black, brown or navy. Or, pick a color and stay within that scheme by using different hues of the same color. What are the accessory/jewelry trends for this fall? Choker necklaces, crosses, unexpected color combinations, big and chunky, recycled pieces like fabric flowers, vintage pieces in softer colors, and natural products like wood and shells.

What’s one versatile piece you recommend having in a wardrobe this fall? Capelets and ponchos are the new shape to look for in tops. Pair with your favorite jeans or best fitting slacks for a comfortable but up-todate look. What type of bags/purses are in for this fall? The statement bag is the thing to have this fall. Hardware, prints, and handcrafted designs are on the rise. Hand painted leather handbags are the hidden gem from the catwalk. And the best part? Hand painted leather from Prada - $2,150. Hand painted leather from Anna’s Closet - $129.

Photo by Kelli Wencl, GingerSnaps Photography

What pieces from last year can you recycle into this year’s fall fashion? You can recycle just about anything from last year just by adding a color from this fall’s color pallet. Try new jewelry, a new top with your favorite jeans, or a great new scarf.

Jessica Ekeren is wearing One Size fits all sweater by “Orange,” $79; Anuschka hand painted leather handbag, $129; Belgo Lux leather belt, $39; Scala one size layer tank, $39; Liverpool jeans $79

What are some effective ways to layer pieces? Use no more than three pieces to layer or it may get too bulky. Try a cardigan over a fitted top, using two different colors and fabrics, then use a scarf. Neutral colors are good for layering because they have low saturation so are not too intense.

How boutique owners stay competitive in today’s market

By Brenda K.M. Ward Back in the day, it was typical for small town Mom and Pop stores to remain open for years – customers remained loyal, competition limited and there were certainly no Internet sales to contend with. Today, boutiques ride an ever precarious wave of uncertainty, ebbing and flowing with economic turns along with corporate and online competition. Julee Johnson, owner of Julee’s Jewelry in St. Peter, opened her jewelry shop in 1999 and despite personal and business set-backs, uses a creative approach to stay successful. After the loss of her son two years ago and being diagnosed herself with stage four cancer one year later, she says that anymore not much worries her – even a store theft earlier this year. “I still just want to please my customers – this is always rewarding, although sometimes a tough task,” said Johnson. “I feel that if I can’t meet their needs or desires at that moment, they’ll leave and go to Mankato or the Cities.” Uptown Consignment owner Paula Benschoter has been in business for three years, her Owatonna boutique offering gently used women’s clothing, shoes, accessories, home décor and furnishings. Benschoter says the economy has impacted her business in ways both good and bad.

12 Girlfriends.mn Fall Fashion 2012

“We have been positively impacted by the growing interest in reuse and recycle and our customers’ happiness in having an outlet to purchase quality yet affordable clothing, accessories, home décor and furniture,” Benschoter said. On the down side, customers often have a limited budget for extras like high-end items.

Staying in business

So what do boutique owners do to remain in business? According to Johnson and Benschoter, it takes a combination of creative promotion, proper inventory and hometown friendliness.

Advertising and promotion

“I definitely did not quit advertising,” said Johnson, who even initiated the forming of a St. Peter retail group for combined promotion of the local businesses. “We do things like a recipe walk which entails stopping at multiple stores and collecting recipes to form a little booklet while checking out each stores’ inventory and specials.” Johnson is also part of the planning committee for Girls Night Out, where more than 700 women come through her store on that one night alone. “I’ve given out over 300 sequin tiaras and women love them,” she said. But there’s also the elephant in the room to deal with – the Internet.

“The Internet has brought down the true value of a diamond,” said Johnson. “Many will sell at a very low profit just to run the money.” Despite this modern day behemoth, Johnson realizes that using the Internet can also be advantageous to growth. She utilizes social media outlets like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest as an opportunity to show potential customers the real person behind the store name – someone with a personality and passions – hoping that shoppers will take this into consideration when buying jewelry. Johnson is also in the process of creating a new website with an online catalog. Benschoter, too, uses competition to her advantage. She has taken the initiative to visit other consignment boutiques with interest in working cohesively with the owners to discuss marketing ideas, price points and overall changes happening in the consignment business. “Competition keeps us on our toes,” she said.

Inventory

For Benschoter, though the volume of inventory does not compare to that of department stores, the nature of her business allows for a unique selection of goods available, with fresh items coming in daily. A consignment shop allows for Benschoter to sell select pieces brought in by individuals, keeping overhead low and inventory levels appropriate for any given season.

www.KingBraces.com Johnson says that she now buys less inventory for her jewelry shop, but the ability to order most anything from more than 500 vendors with an overnight delivery allows her to have almost any diamond in the store within a day. Even though her inventory may be somewhat more limited than in the past, she still carries a combination of items that are trending along with pieces unique to the area, including some “wow” pieces to provide a new look for regular customers. “We have a small town personality, yet an inventory you don’t find in many bigger stores,” said Johnson. Buying gold, too, helps bring in revenue allowing for an immediate return on investment, as well as keeping overhead low by staying in the same location with lower rent.

Personality

As with so much in life, having a welcoming and comfortable attitude is as just as important in the retail business. “I believe I am the difference – how I interact with my customers. They feel I am trustworthy and approachable; and they want me to stay in business,” said Johnson. “And I try to market with a bit of humor or something catchy – not just that we have the best value.” Benschoter says the success of her store depends on continuing to offer quality goods, a welcoming and friendly shopping experience and loyal customers providing referrals to others.

“At this stage in my life I have adopted a simple plan,” said Benschoter. “If you worry, pray, and if you pray, why worry?” Julee’s Jewelry, www.juleesjewelry.com 222 S. Minnesota Ave., St. Peter Uptown Consignment, www.uptownconsignment.net 207 N. Cedar Ave., Owatonna

Marla’s Reuben Soup Ingredients

Directions

From the Kitchen

8 cups water ¼ cup chicken base 1 lb. shredded or chopped corned beef ½ quart sauerkraut ¼ tsp. white pepper 1 tsp. garlic ¼ tsp. black pepper ½ lb. sliced Swiss/American cheese ½ lb. butter 1 cup flour 1 cup heavy cream

3. Bring a large saucepan to a second boil and add the Swiss or American cheese, stirring vigorously to avoid clumping. Add desired amount of roux to the soup mixture, stirring and cooking until quite thick.

1. In a large heavy saucepan combine the water, chicken base, sauerkraut, white pepper and garlic. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes. 2. In a separate saucepan, make a roux by melting butter and adding flour gradually until blended. Cook, stirring constantly for 5 minutes to cook out the flour. Set aside.

4. If desired, cube rye bread, toss in melted butter and crisp in a 350 degree oven, then serve on top of the soup.

Hi, I’m Marla Mueller, the lead cook at Lake Front Bar & Grill in Le Center. Growing up, I was always in the kitchen alongside my mom who was a great cook. Saturday was soup day, and as Mom would start to make the soup, I was always there to help peel, dice, chop and stir. The house was filled with the smell of soup – I think that’s why I love soup! Vegetable beef, chicken wild rice, Reuben, bacon cheeseburger, southwest chicken and rice, beer cheese, creamy potato and ham – how to choose? I love them all!

Marla Mueller

Customers ask for many, but Reuben is high on the “want list,” which is why I chose it as the recipe to share. I hope you love it as much as most people do once they get over, “Reuben soup? Really?”

50 Shades of Conversation By Brenda K.M. Ward Anastasia Steele is a recent college graduate who has caught the eye of the exceedingly handsome billionaire businessman Christian Grey. Intense passion ignites between the two, and the virginal Anastasia finds herself caught up in Christian’s demand for dominance in the Red Room of Pain. But Anastasia isn’t just another submissive...

Nothing New

Published in 1954, “Story of O”is a classic erotic novel about love, dominance and submission by French author Anne Desclos under the pen name Pauline Réage. From the book: “During the winter following its publication, ‘Story of O’ became the talk of the French salons and cafes. Even in Paris, where scandal is slow to ignite, there was an element of shock in these exchanges – that such a book, such a total anachronism, could appear, full-blown, in the mid-20th century.” Amazon.com lists the following three as the greatest erotica books of all time: “Delta of Venus” by Anaïs Nin (1978) “Lolita” by Vladimir Nabokov (1955) “Blue Movie” by Terry Southern (1996)

“50 Shades of Grey,” the first book in the erotic romance trilogy that has topped bestseller lists since early March, has been the talk of lunchrooms and book clubs and, for at least one Lonsdale woman, has been the impetus to read again after not having picked up a novel in years. “I kept hearing so many clients, friends and Facebook friends talking about the ‘50 Shades’ books and decided I had to read them as well and get in on this secret,” said the woman, “Marilyn,” who chose to be anonymous. “I read the first book in 24 hours and finished the third within about a two-week period of starting.” But the books aren’t just getting more people to read – the taboo dominant/submissive relationship between Anastasia and Christian is opening up conversations between couples, too, that until now have been kept under the covers. “I think the books made me want to try new things with my husband, made me interested in sex all over again,” said Marilyn. “And it made me feel like I deserve to enjoy it and try new things, and feel like I deserve to be pleasured and have my partner take the time to do so. The books almost made me feel more like a sexual being and more desirable to my husband.” Marilyn said that while reading, she shared passages with her husband – an effort that helped make him more aware of her needs. Northfielder Mary Closner, who is currently reading the trilogy, would likely applaud Marilyn. “I like that people who have been married forever are reading it and discussing it. Women are having sex out of duty, habit – they want to get it crossed of the list,” said Mary. “This book says you can have sex because you want to. The author

A rise in sales opened the sexual world for women to ask for what they want. To some women this is an unbelievable scandal; others think, ‘This is interesting.’” It’s not just married women who Mary believes the books have the potential to do a great service for. She also believes that it allows any woman a voice when it comes to the bedroom – or, err, whatever room. Phone sex, erotic texts, emails – take a bold step, build up the anticipation with your man, she says. “Men are simple creatures: They want sex and pot roast,” says Mary. “Be confident and try to be in the moment and enjoy it.”

Bookstores aren’t the only retailers coming out ahead in the “50 Shades of Grey” phenomenon. With explicit scenes in which a variety of sex toys are used, the book has also been boosting sales in the adult store business. Lakeville’s Fantasy Gifts has seen an increase in two particular products. Most who come into the store that make mention of the book are asking for the Ben Wa balls, said an employee of the store. There’s also been a noticeable increase in the sale of bondage items. Party Girls, a direct seller of romance goods, now has a “Grey Expectations” store including packages offering with handcuffs, a grey tie a mask and more. G

The Rancher and the Rock Star

Designer Looks Distinctive eyewear is in your sight! CaLL for an appointment: 507.645.9202

By Lizbeth Selvig Avon Impulse Publishing Paperback, $7.99 www.lizselvig.com

By Brenda K.M. Ward When listening to Lizbeth Selvig talk about her first romance novel, it almost seems as if destiny itself was flirting with the Webster woman. “The Rancher and the Rock Star” won two awards when still in manuscript form, one of which prompted an agent from a top publishing house to contact her about purchasing rights to the book – a far cry from the usual agonizing process of repeatedly submitting a manuscript only to receive yet another letter of rejection. “The Rancher and the Rock Star” follows the story of Abby Stadler, a small ranch owner in Minnesota who unexpectedly meets rock star Gray Covey as he tracks his runaway teenage son to Abby’s struggling horse ranch. Though her daughter is beside herself with awe of this superstar, it is Abby who has captured Gray’s heart.

years, Selvig took advantage of the free time she had in the great north to create the story. After many hours of writing and revising based on input from writing group companions, the manuscript was complete. To her great delight, Selvig was notified that her manuscript won two awards: the Lonestar Writing Competition and the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart Award. “It felt unbelievable,” said Selvig. “To this day is feels just incredible.” Following receipt of the award, she was contacted by an agent from Avon Impulse who offered to purchase rights to the book. For Selvig, whose passion for horses, the Beatles and spending time camping and hiking with her husband of 38 years, her own romantic life story seems to just keep getting better.

The idea for “The Rancher and the Rock Star” came from a conversation between Selvig and her daughter several years ago. The two were discussing her daughter’s crush on Elton John – a man outside her generation – when her daughter said, “Wouldn’t it suck if your hero came and then fell in love with your mother?” Yes, but wouldn’t it also make a great story, thought Selvig. So when her husband had an opportunity to work in Alaska for three

Home Interiors ( Focal point )

A focal point offers the greatest gift you can give a room. By painting a piece of furniture or adding accent color to items on a bookshelf you can use color to draw in the eye.

( Lighting )

You may not think about lighting so much in the summer, but in the winter, whether it’s the Christmas tree, windows, walkway or candles in the evening, lighting adds the warm glow that fall and winter beckons. Inexpensive chandeliers add warm whimsy to a room using candles instead of electricity. Get creative with paint, or hang beads from wire and add tea lights. Such a beautiful and inexpensive way to add flare above your space.

( Fireplace )

Your fireplace is an inviting space for people to gather around. Does it show off your personality and inspire people to stay a while? Group candles for warm tidings amongst a luscious floral arrangements that showcase your festive flare. Painted mantel accents in bright colors bring attention to detail and are the perfect opportunity to tie the colors of a room together in one big explosion.

“Spring isn’t the only time for “awakening” your juices to new ideas and projects – fall is another great opportunity to refresh, energize and add excitement to your home or office space. After all, you’ll be spending more time indoors so what better time to fix problem spaces, transform boring rooms, rejuvenate old furniture and repurpose under-used areas.” - Tracy Giza

( Cabinet accent )

Everyone seems to have a wooden entertainment center, china cabinet, headboard, nightstand or storage cabinet of some kind that is plain old boring! Don’t be afraid to splash it with paint and play with design. Stencils are readily available in almost any pattern and easy to follow directions.

( Mudroom )

From swimsuits, flip flops and towels to snow pants, boots and gloves – create a mudroom that goes from frightful to delightful by transitioning from season to season. A bench with cubbies or an open seat can store everything you need if the space allows it. If not, think height! Large cubbies or shelving with baskets can hold the same items in an organized way. Use chalkboard paint to label spaces so you can easily change them seasonally, while favorite paint colors individualize personal cubbies and baskets. Meanwhile, pool passes and keys can be easily organized on clever hooks or metal rakes.

( Kitchen cabinets )

All kitchen cabinets are not created equal, especially those redundant wood stained cabinets that most of us have. Use a bit of paint to set a pair of cabinet doors apart from the others or paint your island a vibrant color. Pick a color from an accent in your kitchen and paint them a shade lighter, or add an accent color to the molding or drawer frames. Make sure your accent color is balanced throughout the room and can be included in your accessories. Or for a quick change – simply replace the knobs.

Fling your bling for a cause By Brenda K.M. Ward You may have heard of this affair, but it’s never been quite like this before. It’s the annual American Red Cross Red Bling Fling, a fabulous opportunity to sport a little black dress and drape yourself on the arm of your significant other for an evening of elegant fun and fundraising. “It started two years ago as the Little Black Dress Red Bling Fling,” said Therese Amundson, initiator and organizer of the event. “We’ve now renamed it the Red Cross Red Bling Fling because it’s not just for women – we’d like to see couples attend.” At the Saturday, Oct. 13 event, couples will enjoy both a women’s style show by Maurice’s and a men’s style show by Old Navy, a light meal, and live music by PowerHouse – a 10-piece band performing classic rock, rhythm and blues, swing and soul music. There will also be hundreds of items for bid during 24 Girlfriends.mn Fall Fashion 2012

a silent auction and a handful of live auction goodies, too, like tickets to a Vikings game, a solid oak chest and a weekend stay at the Residence Inn Depot in Minneapolis. Perhaps most importantly, simply by attending there’s the feel good aspect in knowing you’re helping support one of the most widespread organizations in the world. “The Red Cross is in such need. Everything is done by donations,” said Amundson, who, along with her husband, hosts the event at their Faribault business. “It helps anybody and everybody – I don’t think there’s anyone who hasn’t been touched by it in some way.” The Red Bling Fling begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 at Spike’s Bar and Grill, 1525 Division St. W. in Faribault. Tickets are $30 at the door or $25 in advance – call Rice County Red Cross at 507-334-8471 or Spike’s Bar and Grill at 507-331-1511.

The art of knitting makes a comeback for women of all ages By Brenda K.M. Ward

{

Knitting Renaissance

}

Knit one, purl two

Perhaps Grandma imparted to you this well-known knitting mantra as her needles clicked together throughout the evening, or maybe you learned the art of manipulating yarn into a colorful scarf while in high school. With resurgence in popularity, today students, Gen X’ers and grandmothers alike share an affinity for creating a world of usable items from a heap of yarn.

So what’s the allure? “It’s the beautiful colors of the yarn, the rhythmic nature of knitting,” said Cynthia Gilbertson, owner of Northfield Yarn (northfieldyarn.com), who has been knitting “obsessively” every day since 2003. “You can make it challenging and really get your brain involved, or you can make it easy, a relaxing experience.”

“The concept of knitting groups is almost the reason I opened the store,” said Cynthia. “When people come together with a common craft, it facilitates conversations. It almost feels like you are friends already because you have this in common.” Joining a group is also a great way to improve your knitting skills, says Cynthia.

Knitting is also a form of artistic expression; playing with color or adding your own design elements can really personalize your work. And, it’s lasting and useful – you always have a handmade gift to give someone. The gatherings In recent years, more and more knitting groups have been springing up, with store owners opening their space to provide the ultimate setting.

“I see beginners get inspired and that helps them to feel encouraged to try new things.” Cynthia opens her store to knitters for Open Stitch Night from 6 to 8 p.m. each Thursday and is open to hosting knitting groups other days of the week as well. She also welcomes people for Drop-in Clinics where anyone can stop by to get instruction in solving a knitting problem.

Many knitters worldwide join Ravelry – an online group similar to Facebook designed for those who knit and crochet. The site provides a plethora of ideas and information on patterns, yarns and designs, as well as chat groups and specialized groups to join. Modern knits Wool, angora, mohair, cotton, silk, camel and even bamboo or corn blends – with an abundance of yarn fabrics and colors to choose from, today you’re more likely to see a poncho made of alpaca than Grandma’s tabletop doily in candy pink polyester. “People come into the store and look at the yarn and touch it and say, ‘I want to learn how to knit,’” said Cynthia. If you’re ready to join the world of knitters – along with celebrities like Cameron Diaz and

Hilary Swank – it could be as easy as logging on to YouTube for a how-to or reading a blog with accompanying photos. “I think anyone can learn to knit,” said Cynthia. “You have to be willing to practice and willing to be bad. And you have to be interested enough in achieving the final result to stick with it and get through the hard parts.” Knitted clothing like bikinis or wedding dresses may be a bit more unusual, but popular are the cowl – like a scarf but one large circle that can be looped around the neck – fingerless mittens and baby items. Kathy says recipients of the shawls are sometimes brought to tears when receiving the gift. One person was even buried with the prayer shawl inside the casket.

Freaky Phobias

Are you affected by an extreme or unusual fear? If so, you’re not alone. By Brenda K.M. Ward Those who know me best know that I suffer from ophidiophobia. I’m not alone. Oodles of others understand the terror that sets in at the sight of snake, whether slithering across the grass in front of me or enclosed in a glass cage – even the sight of one on TV. How a person can keep one in their home is beyond my scope of understanding. Perhaps you, too, are a victim of ophidiophobia, or – God forbid – kathisophobia. Hard to imagine, right? My fear of snakes is far more common the than the fear of sitting down (kathisophobia), but to those who can’t fathom the thought of resting their tush on the seat of a chair, it seems quite normal. While fear is a normal response to a genuine danger, a phobia is an excessive and persistent fear of an object, situation or activity, according to the American Psychiatric Association. A particular fear causes such distress that some go to extreme lengths to avoid the situation. Symptoms of a phobia might include feelings or terror or dread; reactions that are automatic and uncontrollable; or rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, trembling and an overwhelming desire to flee.

Michelle Muff, licensed associate marriage and family therapist and owner of Compassionate Counseling Services in Waseca (www. compassionmn.com), provides expert advice on just why phobias surface and what to do about the troublesome disorder. GF: What causes a phobia to develop? MM: When there is a phobia there is a persistent fear that is excessive or unreasonable. It is usually cued by the presence or anticipation of a specific object or situation. For example, a person may have a fear of flying and in anticipation of the trip would elicit persistent fear and worry about the event. GF: Why do some people have phobias and not others? MM: Researchers have not determined what causes a specific phobia to develop. However, life experiences may induce a specific phobia or anxiety type disorder. For example a person that has been traumatized may develop a fear of a specific object or situation. A person may experience a panic attack and then develop agoraphobia – fear of being in a situation or place and having a panic attack and not being able to escape or receive help.

Each experience that we have shapes and develops our brain during childhood and adolescence. An adult brain that has experienced love and nurturance in childhood will have an increased ability to handle stress and return to a level of calmness. There are many variables and life experiences that influence the development of phobias. GF: Are some people more prone to phobias than others? MM: Both heredity and environment play a crucial role in the development and resiliency of the human person. Each individual is unique and shaped by intricacies of life experience, how we were raised, socioeconomic factors, positive relationships and genes. A person’s unique variables and resiliency factors all may contribute to the development of phobias and or anxiety disorders. GF: What’s the difference between a phobia and anxiety? MM: You can have an anxiety disorder and not have a phobia, but you cannot have a phobia and not have an anxiety disorder. Phobias are listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders under the classification of anxiety disorders. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is considered an anxiety disorder, but is not considered a phobia. A fear of public speaking is a social anxiety disorder or social phobia. >>>

Quiz: NAME THAT PHOBIA

In recognition of breast cancer awareness month, we encourage you to have your annual mammogram. Early detection saves lives.

GF: What can be done to help overcome phobias? MM: According to research, the most effective treatment of anxiety disorders is a combination of psychotropic medicine and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT helps the person or individual to slow down their response time to the fear and identify their thinking pattern. The belief is that if the thought process is changed, the emotion of fear will be decreased. Once the emotion of fear and thought patterns are identified, the therapist can lead the person through a series of desensitization exercises in which the person faces the fear. Self-soothing and relaxation exercises are taught to enable the individual to move through the fear. Using the combination of medication and therapy has been found to be most effective.

GIRLFRIENDS STAFF REVEALS THEIR FEARS Brenda Ward fears snakes – live, stuffed, plastic or flattened by a car. Lisa Dwyer can’t shake the childhood fear of something lurking underneath her bed. Ashley Ptacek abhors the idea of anything to do with Popsicle sticks. Debbie Ensley is deathly afraid of cats – don’t even meow around her. Lauran Rott fears socialists and opening her liquor cabinet only to find it empty.

THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT… Apps are available for tracking calories and remembering where you parked your car, so why not an app to help overcome a phobia? For $2.99, Self-Study Apps has come out with just that. The phobia treatment app first displays an image of something comforting – a teddy bear for example – followed by a picture of the fear stimulus, like dental work being done. After blurring the evil dental picture with your finger, the screen repeatedly flashes between the new blurred image and the teddy bear, then leaves you with an affirming message, all designed to soothe your case of dentophobia.

Unexpected Caregiver | Kari Berit

Caregiving gets messy built careers, raised families and played productive roles in a variety of communities. Even if one of your parents has Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, they are adults with a disease, not adults who have reverted to a strange form of childishness. Not everyone ages in the same manner.

One of the toughest challenges in providing care to our parents is realizing that they are still adults. As we’ve noted several times already, the image of “parenting our parents can be very misleading, calling up the image of a parent-child relationship. They may be becoming more dependent – not only on us, but on professional caregivers as well – but they deserve to be treated with the dignity and respect due adults who have

We have to differentiate aging normally and aging with disease. My mother aged with disease. She died at 61, in worse shape than many 90-year-olds. Perhaps because I work in this field and am around both kinds of people, those who are who are aging normally and those who are aging with disease, I was ready to let my Mom go. Her care was heading into a more intensive level and not only was my Dad tiring out as her primary caregiver, putting his own health in jeopardy, but he had reached the limits of what he could do on his own.

“It will be messy, I answered. “It will upset your life and it will challenge all involved. When your parents get to the point of needing care, life is turned upside down. For many of us, our parents represent some sense of stability, whether perceived or real. When they turn to us for help, it’s messy. That doesn’t mean it’s a situation that has to be out of control, but you do need to think through how you all want to participate in your parent’s care.

When we cared for my grandpa, we knew he wanted to die in his home. We kept him there as long as we could, enjoying meals, slide shows and music with him. In his last days, however, it became too much for us and we took the sage advice of hospice professionals to place him in a nursing home. It was a hard, but smart, decision to make.

Live Life Beyond the Laundry If the Chaos of life has you in an endless spin cycle, this is a must read.

Whatever emotional baggage you have, expect it to come to the surface and, at times, be ugly. I had a client who said, “I don’t want this to be messy.

Don’t get me wrong: I miss my mother. No one is ever really ready to lose a parent. My mom had Huntington’s disease (HD: a progressive neuro-degenerative disease causing uncontrolled physical movements and mental deterioration). She spent her last years sitting in front of the T.V. from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. She lost most of her desire to see friends and only left the house for her weekly hair appointment and Sunday worship. Her quality of life had deteriorated to such a degree that death was a blessing.
