APPLEFEST
Sidney Daily News
10th anniversary Applefest begins Friday The Shelby County Applefest was first observed in the year 2003 as a celebration of Ohio’s Bicentennial. Success was immediate in that initial year and this annual event has continued to expand in both popularity and attendance. The 2012 Applefest will mark the 10year anniversary and is scheduled for Friday through Sunday The original concept for Applefest was to set aside a weekend of activities during which Shelby County residents and neighbors could come together to celebrate life and to enjoy quality time with family and friends. It is a time to avow and recognize that the people of Shelby County are truly as “American as apple pie.” Applefest offers something for all age groups and has evolved into one of West Central Ohio’s premier family fun events. All ac-
tivities and entertainment will be offered free of charge and the event in its entirety will be centered in historic downtown Sidney, with the Shelby County court square serving as its focal point. Children’s activities and a variety of nonstop live entertainment will be presented on two full-size stages. Attractions and exhibits will be both entertaining and educational. To help ensure true family-friendly nature of Applefest, no alcoholic beverages will be permitted. The underlying success of Applefest rests in the generous spirit of its local sponsors and dedicated volunteers. Thanks to the financial support of both businesses and individuals coupled with inkind sponsorships, this festival has achieved tremendous success in a very short period of time, organizers said. Applefest is organized by an allvolunteer board of directors. In 2012, Amy Pike has served as the chairwoman. “Every detail of Applefest continues to be meticulously managed so that, come the weekend after Labor Day each September,

thousands can enjoy a true taste of Americana under the shade trees of the Shelby County courthouse,” said Pike The 2012 festival will feature live entertainment from the Big Band era to the music of today on the main stage. All who attend this year’s Applefest are sure to enjoy the craft, quilt, floral, car, and Shelby County woodcarvers shows, along with an abundant variety of vendors offering everything from home-grown and homemade items to apple-themed food and soft drinks. The Grown in Shelby County contest, kiddie tractor pull, Applefest photo contest, and 10K, 5K, and kids 1-mile fun run are a part of this year’s Applefest. On Saturday and Sunday, the kids activities area will be in full swing, offering arts and crafts activities for children along with an entertaining lineup of live performances on the Kid’s Stage. The Shelby County Historical Society will host a Native American gathering featuring presentations by Dr. Herman Viola, a well-recognized expert on Native American culture, an encampment and Na-

tive American exhibits at the Ross Center. The return of the annual Applefest parade and combined high school band performance have been planned for Sunday. New to Applefest this year will be a Shelby County business and industry timeline exhibit depicting the history of local companies and organizations. It will be exhibited at the Historic Sidney Theatre and in the storefront windows of several downtown businesses. In conjunction with the exhibit, children will be encouraged to visit each display and will be awarded a special prize for doing so. Seventeen area businesses and organizations have committed to prepare and host exhibits. Opening ceremony, 9/11 memorial planned The annual opening ceremony for Applefest and Sept. 11 memorial will be Saturday at 9:45 a.m. on the Main Stage on the Shelby County courtsquare. It will be coordinated by the Rev. Phil Chilcote, conductor of the Sidney Civic Band and vice president of the Shelby County Ministerial Association. The program will be divided into four segments. The first will be a 15-minute musical prelude. The second segment will include the presentation of the colors, the national anthem, the pledge of allegiance, and an invocation by the Rev. Jane Madden, president of the Shelby County Ministerial Association. Amy Pike, 2012 Applefest board chairwoman will offer a welcome message and be followed by official welcomes from the Shelby County commissioners and Sidney Mayor Mike Barhorst. The third segment comprises tributes to those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 tragedy. These tributes will include the bell ceremony presented by the Sidney Fire Department Honor Guard; a 21-gun salute presented by the Sidney Police Department
Honor Guard; taps played by members of the Sidney Civic Band; a special band selection written as a dedication to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11; and a prayer will be offered by Pastor George Gnade for those who lost their lives and those who continue to grieve. The final segment of the program will be a short concert presented by the Sidney Civic Band featuring patriotic selections and selections written specifically for the Sept. 11 tragedy. The program will conclude at 11 a.m. “This year begins the second decade of years following the tragic day,” Chilcote said. “Last year of the 10th anniversary of the tragic day, there were many events. This year there is just one. I don’t want to ever lose the poignancy of the huge loss of life that day, but at the same time, there is so much to celebrate in our land, the ‘land of the free, and the home of the brave.’ That’s why the last half of the program will be all music, special selections written specifically for the Sept. 11 tragedy, marches, patriotic music. Music does a heart good and reminds us of the wonderful freedoms that we enjoy.”

North American continent. “This is true America,” he said. “Each person has his own version of the dance. That’s your dance.” The styles of dancing fall into three categories: traditional, grass and fancy. “Traditional is the story dance,” Samaniego added. The dancers tell a story — of war, of the hunt, of conquest — “or whatever you want to say.” The garb of the traditional dancers is made of broadcloth or leather or wool. “If you looked at a picture of a traditional dancer from 100 years ago and put it next to a dancer of today, they would look the same,” he said. Fancy dancing was adopted by Native Americans after it became popular in the Wild West shows that toured the country in the early 20th century. The regalia of fancy dancers features bright colors, satins and silks. ‘We weren’t flashy enough” for the staged performances, Samaniego said. According to Wikipedia, members of the Ponca tribe developed the dance in the 1920s and 1930s to entertain tourists on the reservations. It showcases the great strength and prowess of its performers. “In a traditional powwow, you send grass dancers in first to lay down the grass so other people can get in,” he noted. “A pow-wow is like a big church social.” Because some of the dancers carry pieces that are antique, family heir-
looms, the head dancers caution attendees not to touch any part of a performer’s regalia without asking first. Likewise, Allen said, don’t take any photos without permission. The gathering will open Thursday with a lecture by Dr. Herman Viola, of Falls Church, Va., curator emeritus at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. The speech will be at 7 p.m. at Lehman Catholic High School. Viola has authored several books about his specialty, the study of the American West and Native Americans. All events comprising the gathering will be free and open to the public ex-
cept the programs that have been scheduled for the schools on Friday. A Ross Historical Center exhibit will feature Native American artifacts on display from Saturday through the end of the month. Dozens of Native American dancers from many different tribes will perform during the Shelby County Historical Society’s Native American Gathering at the Shelby County Fairgrounds Thursday through Sunday Head dancers Tim Samaniego and Angela Allen, of Lima, will lead traditional dances, grass dances and fancy dances during the event, which is open to the public. They hope that attendees who come to watch will be drawn into the action and decide to participate. “People are always invited to join in,” Samaniego said. A master of ceremonies will explain each dance. The performances are scheduled to run continuously from early afternoon Thursday until 4 p.m. and then again from 6 p.m. until dark. The event is free. “This is a great time for people to come out and learn that Native American people are still here,” Samaniego said. “We work among you.” He is a union pipe-fitter, working in Lima. Allen is a paralegal who works in Bellefontaine. They make their own regalia, the clothes worn during a pow-wow. The clothes feature beadwork and moccasins that are particular to individual tribes. If a Native American wears a traditional regalia, “you can tell which tribe and which clan” he’s from, Samaniego said. Allen, who is Shawnee, grew up in Vinton County and began dancing as a toddler.

Quilters ready to display artwork BY MARY ELLEN EGBERT Summer is quickly passing, which means time for the Shelby County Applefest is almost here. And although a majority of folks do whatever they can to keep cool, there is a unique group of thread artists who have feverishly been working on something to keep them warm. What better place to view their talents than at the Applefest Quilt Show? The quilt show committee has taken a walk through time to remember the wonderful pieces that have been hung each year to display the craftsmanship, colors and history of this art form. From the first year at the Masonic Temple, several years at the fairgrounds and more permanently in the Senior Citizen Center, quilters have come to compete as well
as admire the threaded beauties. This year will be no exception. The center will become a gallery and hundreds of people will come to be inspired. But there will be a few changes that are regrettably necessary in order to continue what the original intent for this show was and still is, to educate and pay tribute to the quilters from yesterday as well as today. The economy has hit everyone in one way or another, and so it is with the budget for the quilt show. The first-, second- and third-place winners from each category will not be awarded monetary prizes for the first time since the show began. But the committee is confident that the show will retain the quality and quantity of quilts for all to see. There has been an award every
year that has not been given enough recognition for the passion that has gone into the making. Every category which has a first-, second- and thirdplace winner has been awarded a handmade log cabin apple, which Pauline Warren, a national awardwinning quilter from Sidney, has lovingly made each year. These ribbons are unique to the Applefest and were designed by Warren just for this event. The first-, second- and third-place winner of each category will still be awarded these apples. And when all categories have been judged, the Best of Show Hand-Quilted and the Best of Show Machine-Quilted quilts will still receive prize money in addition to their ribbons. Each year there is a theme category, and this year’s theme is “Simply Charming.” What this means is, each
piece of fabric must be cut and sewn back together to make the quilt top with only one template. Some of these designs include squares, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, apple cores pattern and any other shape that will interlock with one another to finish out as a quilt. In early days, this method, called a charm quilt, required that each piece of fabric in the quilt be different. But in the Applefest show, fabrics can be repeated. They just all have to be cut from the same template. The Loose Threads Quilt Club has once again created a beautiful raffle quilt that will be awarded to the lucky winner on Sunday as soon as the show is over. This year’s pattern is a patriotic Ohio Star. Tickets will be available at the show or from club members prior to the show.
Festival pageant planned for tonight Shelby County girls in grades 9-11 were invited to compete for the honor of being named Miss Applefest. Shelby County girls age 4 to 6 were eligible to participate in the 2012 Little Miss Apple of My Eye pageant. The competition will be held tonight at 7 p.m. in the Cameo Theatre at the Shelby County Senior Center, 304 S. West Ave. Advance registration was required. The chairperson for this year’s event is Janice Seger. The girls had an interview Sunday at the Shelby County Agricultural Center, 822 Fair Road. During the pageant, each girl must wear an original apple-themed outfit. Judging criteria will include poise, responsiveness to questions, and personality. An on-stage interview question will be submitted to each final candidate. A mandatory pre-pageant rehearsal was scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Cameo Theatre. The top three finalists in each category will be given cash awards and the winner will be invited to participate in future events and parades throughout the Shelby County area during the year following the Applefest. The winners are also expected to ride on the Applefest float during the Applefest parade Sunday.
