Breakfast at a restaurant, a great way to start the day What better way to start the day than with a nice breakfast at a pleasant restaurant? This inexpensive meal is the most important of the day, providing us with the energy for the tasks that await us. Whether it’s a quick bite on a weekday morning or a leisurely Sunday brunch, breakfast at a restaurant can be a precious opportunity to relax. The gentle aroma of coffee is a pleasant introduction to your dining experience. Whether you prefer a mild variety or a stronger brew, a good cup of coffee never fails to lift the spirits. Eggs are the core of most breakfast menus. Whether you prefer yours Benedictine-style, over easy, boiled, poached, sunny side up or in an omelette, whether accompanied by an English muffin, a bagel, a croissant, or toast, eggs can provide a satisfying breakfast. For those with a ready stomach and a big appetite, there are always the classics: eggs, bacon, sausages, ham, hash browns, beans and toast. Both healthy and sweet breakfasts are also offered in most restaurants. There’s fruit in abundance, many cereals, pancakes, waffles, chocolate, and so forth. Whatever your mood, you’ll find something that satisfies. A restaurant breakfast is particularly appealing because we know that numerous tasks await us during the day. We’ve got enough to do, why not take advantage of the chance to have a pleasant meal before we start?

The changing face of restaurant dining The way we eat is directly influenced by our lifestyle, and as we have changed, so have our restaurants. Menus offer a previously unimagined range of options. Vegetarian menus, a variety of fine dining options, house wine or bottled wine, an array of specialties, buffet service or a la carte, there’s an option for every taste, every style and every budget. Established restaurants are offering ever-expanding menus, and new restaurants are popping up every day. Fast-food restaurants are by far the most successful, with ethnic restaurants faring almost as well. Thanks to the latter, eating out has become a great way to have an adventure. Not only do ethnic restaurants allow us to experience new flavors and aromas, but the décor and the music create a seductively novel environment. It’s always pleasant when visiting a new city to seek out a restaurant that serves local cuisine. As we seek to expand our horizons, restaurants are there to offer us a pleasant window into new worlds.

Restaurants make us happy! Certain places attract happiness. Restaurants are places that make us smile, whether it is at the end of a full day, at the start of the new day, or simply a break in the day to enjoy a good meal with friends. In fact, it is quite pleasant to eat at a restaurant where the atmosphere is cordial and serene and where you can forget everyday problems. You are treated like royalty and there is nothing for you to clean up… what a treat! Briefly, restaurants add a bit of spice to everyday life and are still the perfect place to enjoy those special evenings. Choose a restaurant with a romantic atmosphere to celebrate a first anniversary, or choose

someone’s return. As well, restaurants are particularly attentive when celebrat-

ing any other special events such as Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, and other celebrations (cakes, birthday songs, etc.). Restaurant outings are easy to plan and are ideal for good conversation and connecting with friends. The pleasure of sharing a meal at a restaurant is accessible to everyone and to all budgets. In addition, many establishments now offer the option of reserving private rooms for business meetings or social gatherings. You can enjoy all the privacy you want without sacrificing the excellent service we associate with a restaurant meal. What could be better?

Japanese? Vietnamese? Korean? I’m losing my Chinese!!! Let’s not forget Szechwan, Cantonese, and Thai cuisine, which are fairly popular. If you look a little further into exotic cuisine, you will find meals such as nems, dim sums, and noodles and sushi, which are a little more popular. In Japanese restaurants, meals are often prepared in front of the customers. All of the meals are nicely presented on a large platter. Some meals are kept warm thanks to chafing dishes, such as sake, a rice wine that is served very hot in small porcelain cups with no handles, and tea that is served at the end of the meal. Japanese meals are all about finesse. Spices are barely used to mildly boost the natural flavors. Pure unadulterated flavor! Thai cuisine, which is quite popular, has gone from the tables of the kings and emperors of Siam to restaurants around the world. Contrary to Japanese cuisine, Thai cuisine has a strong taste and curry is very popular. A true feast! To experience the essence of Chinese cuisine, you must taste a shiou mai (or siu mai). This small steamed ravioli, wrapped in won ton pastry and shaped to suit the whims of the chef, can be made with shrimp, pork, vegetables, etc. Once stuffed, shiou mai is steam-cooked. A divine pleasure! Less known, but gaining in popularity, Korean cuisine is based on the same culinary roots as the other Asian cuisines. Rice, soya sauce, soy pasta, and fish, flavored with red pepper, ginger, and sesame. Korea’s unique touch is found in its pleasant mixtures of sweet, acidic, spicy, salty, and sour. A sublime culinary discovery

The pleasure of dining out For many of us, mealtimes are the high point of the day. Perhaps that’s because eating can be both comforting

A perfect place-setting for a romantic dinner!

and pleasant. And if we have the opportunity to eat at a restaurant, the pleasure can be even greater. Whether going out for lunch with a colleague to get away from work, stopping for a treat with

the family to avoid annoying chores, meeting over a business dinner or having a romantic evening out in a new environment, it’s always a pleasure to eat out. What better way to get together with someone than over a meal in a restaurant? It’s often over a meal that we laugh with friends, express out deepest feelings or celebrate the important milestones in our lives. In short, a restaurant can be the perfect place to socialize. Some people pass on the pleasure of

eating out, claiming that they need to eat well to remain healthy. But wanting to eat a healthy diet doesn’t mean you can never set foot in a restaurant. Going out to eat from time to time is very pleasant and highly recommended for a change of pace. Anyway, there’s always a way to avoid excessive salt or grease, as most restaurateurs today know that people are concerned with eating well. Don’t be shy to ask for exactly what you want so your night out is a pleasant one.

A family meal at the restaurant without being stingy or breaking your budget… it’s possible! Come out & enjoy a hearty fare with an enjoyable, relaxed atmosphere. Our full service restaurant is open Monday-Saturday 6am-1am serving Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Large family, small budget? By carefully choosing your restaurant, you can enjoy a pleasant family outing without digging a hole in your wallet. Many restaurants offer rebates on kid’s meals, in different ways. Some offer children’s meals at half price one night a week. Others offer reduced prices for each child accompanied by an adult, anytime. Still others push the offer a bit further by offering a free meal from the children’s menu with every full-priced adult meal. Most restaurants offer economical meals on their weekday lunch menus. While such offers are primarily intended for workers, why not take advantage of it as a family? As well, most restaurants charge different prices for their noon and their evening meals during weekends. Prices vary significantly, for adults as well as for children, in buffet-style restaurants. For teenagers whose appetites are bottomless, as well as adults with hearty appetites, buffets are an excellent choice. You can also select the daily special, which is more economical. Whether your budget is more or less tight, breakfast still offers the best quality-to-price ratio for a restaurant meal. While it doesn’t necessarily reserve any great culinary surprises, eating breakfast at the restaurant is a pleasant way to start the day. Hearty and delicious, including free coffee refills, breakfast can cost as little as $5.00 and can satisfy you until late afternoon, especially if you eat at brunch time.

Ethnic cuisine to please your palate The last several years have seen a great increase in the popularity of restaurants serving ethnic cuisine. As a result, eating out can now be an exotic experience. Excellent food from the world over is now readily available in most towns and cities. Every restaurant has its nationality, and every nationality its culinary specialty. For example, Asian cuisine has scored a smashing success in the last decade. For instance, there’s Thai cuisine; its appeal comes from an

abundant use of different spices, some acidic, some bitter and some sharp. Most Thai food is flavored with lemon grass, the fire of hot peppers and the fresh taste of coriander. The Vietnamese, on the other hand, cook noodles and rice seasoned with the heady aroma of basil, ginger, lime, mint and so on, all of which are equally delicious with pork, chicken, beef or seafood. And, of course, Mexican and Lebanese cuisine are also popular. Mexican cooking seduces our taste

buds with classics like tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas and fajitas, which we just can’t turn down. Lebanon beckons us with unexpected pleasures like hummus, a puree of chickpeas and sesame oil, sometimes served with fried vegetables and meat, or baba ghanouj, an eggplant puree. And, of course, there’s

always Greek, Italian, French and Chinese cuisine, as well as many others. Not only do these different culinary experiences present us with new tastes and aromas, but the décor and the music also draws us in, offering us a pleasant sense of the adventure.

To whom belongs the roux? What is one element found in both Cajun and Creole cuisine? It is the roux. This fabulous sauce is made with a mixture of fat and browned flour and is the base for many Creole and Cajun dishes. Both cuisines have a similar multiracial heritage: even though both terms are not interchangeable as they represent a distinct and separate culinary culture, they both mix and meet to give us the savory cuisine found in Southern Louisiana. Cajun cuisine stems from New Orleans at the start of the XVIII century. At the end of that century, thousands of French colonists left Haiti to escape the slave rebellion and brought with them

variety of Caribbean spices. At around the same time, many Acadians from Nova Scotia arrived in Southern Louisiana. All in all, New Orleans became the cradle for a new exciting cuisine more than 300 years ago! Today, you will find the influence of the Bayous in most Creole restaurants. Corn, rice, chicken and pork all compete with dishes full of crayfish, andouille, black pudding and a variety of sausages. For those with strong taste buds, they can choose to add peppers, onions and tomatoes, all spiced up in exquisite dishes. If you prefer rabbit, fish, seafood, duck or goose, you will be more than satisfied with the Creole and Cajun cuisine: you will be delighted and fulfilled!

Eating out with children Among the different types of family outings, eating out at a restaurant is often the most popular with the children. Stories and jokes can be exchanged over a good meal, parents can take a break and it’s a real treat for the children. Family-type restaurants allow families to have a nice outing without spending a fortune. Many places have a playroom available for the little ones and sometimes clowns and make-up artists are there to amuse the children. So a meal at a restaurant becomes real entertainment, offering something for everyone at lunchtime or suppertime. Other, more gastronomic options are available to families. How about opening your family’s eyes to the world and trying an Indian meal or some Ethiopian cooking sitting on the floor. The children will probably love the experience; a total change of scenery and lots of stories to tell friends on Monday morning. There is also the possibility of going to a top-rate restaurant on Sundays as families are often welcome on this day of the week. Special children’s menus are available as well as quality menus for adults. Another option to consider for an economical meal out is to have breakfast at a restaurant. For a fraction of the price, the whole family can take advantage of a good meal in the comfort of unpretentious surroundings. Buffet-style restaurants should also be considered as the children’s menu is often half price. And finally, don’t forget that celebrating a birthday at a restaurant can turn out to be a gift in itself.

Beers and wines...à la carte! Rain or shine, Canadians love eating out at a restaurant. It could be for a nutritious energypacked continental breakfast before heading out to work, a lunch between colleagues or an intimate dinner. Everyone of us has a favourite spot, a restaurant whose fares are hard to resist! Although we certainly have a favourite wine or beer, lunch or dinner at a restaurant is the ideal place to try out a vast array of drinks. If the cost of a bottle of wine will make a dent in your budget, why not buy it by the glass? One or two glasses of wine, a little exercise in wine tasting, could prove more affordable and will certainly curtail drinking, as the legal limit can be fast approaching. Beer is also very popular as

the drink of choice in restaurants. Some restaurants specialize in offering a wide selection of beers from the four corners of the world. Microbreweries are also gaining in popularity and some even had the brilliant idea to build restaurants on the sites of their microbreweries. Trading across the globe has also opened the door to new and exciting beers from around the world. We have always known Belgian, French and English beers. Now restaurants are also able to offer beers from places like Mexico, Hungary, Poland and Japan. Try them out, drink moderately and enjoy fully this little time out at your local restaurant! Give yourself a special wine tasting treat — wine by the glass!

We all appreciate a good meal. We take great delight in sharing a good meal with friends and family and we look for the best quality products available. When it comes to a meal that will seduce us with its appearance, its aroma, and its flavor, we do not fret over the cost. After all, even if the dish tastes divine, a poorly presented meal is never very appetizing. For this reason, it is important to know where to find such culinary delights. Of course, there is always word of mouth. After the weather, our second choice of conversation is restaurant outings, which are an integral part of our cultural activities. There is a vast choice in types of restaurants, the selection of products is infinite, and the prices vary depending on the refinement of the products and the ambiance of the restaurant. The range of cuisine is particularly broad in large urban areas. Nevertheless, surrounding regions have many pleasant surprises and happy discoveries in store for us. Bistrobars, inns, country lodges… With just a few clicks, many Internet sites let you explore different regions to help you discover the perfect little restaurant for tonight’s outing. You will find information on gastronomic tours, themed restaurants, wine circuits, and many other very inviting dining experiences. If you really want to be assured of a great meal, search for the restaurants in your region that were awarded regional or provincial prizes. Generally, it is a good indication of proven satisfaction.

Country dining at its best An urge for a holiday often grabs us by the taste buds. So, why not let ourselves be tempted? A meal in the country can be the occasion for a truly gastronomic jaunt through the enchanting countryside and incomparable settings. Country-style dining is part of what is now known as Agro-tourism. This is an original way of savoring authentic farm products and visiting the many regional producers. Farms offer menus composed mainly of their own products, according to regional culinary specialities. Reservations are required. This is a unique

occasion to get back to nature and to discover regional dishes, with quality taking precedence. Tourists can taste the flavors of a small corner of the world without it costing them a fortune and the added bonus of a tour of the farm. Several other types of country-style dining are available offering beautiful views and delicious meals. Every place is unique in its own way, according to the region and the type of farm. In their own way, these places concoct their dishes with down-to-earth goodness that’s hard to beat, giving the countryside a plethora of culinary treats.

Over the years the meals have become more refined, uniting an older, peasant style of cooking with a more contemporary style of inventiveness. Most of these farms offer a “bring your own bottle”

formula. Some people even choose to get married at these establishments. They are in fact, beautiful places for intimate, country-style weddings, baptisms or family celebrations.

Hurray, we’re going to a restaurant! “For Mother’s Day, we went to the same neighborhood restaurant where we have been going since I was a little girl, whenever we wanted to properly celebrate an event. This is where we celebrated many anniversaries, and it is where my aunt once announced that she was expecting twin girls. Basically, this is the restaurant we love to go to. Why do we love this restaurant? Because the service is excellent and the food is delicious, creative, refined, and worthy of a star, but the prices are quite ordinary.” We have all heard similar stories because restaurants are a part of our lives from our youngest age. Restaurants are the place where we laughed, we cried, we sang, we celebrated… We all have our favourite places, our favourite dishes,

Have you ever left a restaurant feeling quite satisfied with the meal but very disappointed with the reception and the service you received? Have you ever tolerated loud disturbing surroundings just so you could enjoy a meal away from home? To fully enjoy a restaurant meal, the menu is always important, but so is the atmosphere, which is one of the keys to a successful outing. Some establishments are known for the quality of their dishes but not so much for the appeal of their dining room. In fact, busy and noisy places are never a good choice for a successful outing with friends, especially if you cannot hear each other. If you cannot stand noise, avoid places where the music is too loud, and do not choose a table that is placed too close to the kitchen. The

sounds of pots and pans will irritate you. Opting for a round table is more conducive to good conversation. It is always disappointing when you cannot converse with the guests who are seated at the end of a long rectangular table. As well, in order to reduce surrounding noises, choose a restaurant where the floor is carpeted and the tables are spaced apart. It will reduce the comings and goings around you, and the atmosphere will be much more relaxing. It is best to know the restaurant where you plan to go, either by having a look before you enter or by asking people who have eaten there. Always reserve in advance to avoid disappointment. You will then be assured of a pleasant experience and a delicious flavorful meal.

Dieticians have been telling us over and over: fast food and overeating cause obesity and ensuing health problems. Often, because we lack the time, we forego nutritious meals and opt for the nearest fast food counter or restaurant for our lunch. At night, after a hard long day, we jump in the car and drive to our favourite restaurant. But, take heart, it is now possible to eat out and eat nutritious meals. Even fast food chains now offer nutritious choices if you take into account your nutritional needs. Start your meal with a large glass of water. Satisfied for a short while, your stomach will be less inclined to want everything on the menu and you will be better able to resist pigging out! The waiter brings you freshly baked bread? Go ahead, eat slowly and enjoy at least 50 gr. After 25 gr. the satiety center in your brain feels replete and you will eat less during your meal. Just avoid adding butter or margarine. As an aperitif, tomato juice is an excellent choice. Alcohol and sweet drinks will stimulate your appetite. If you choose an entrée, do not order dessert. If it is for lunch, you can always enjoy a few cookies during your mid-afternoon coffee break! Tables d’hôte are very popular and somewhat cheaper than meals à la carte but they often will fill you up. If the only option offered is the table d’hôte, remember that you do not have to eat the whole thing!

Food Tips: A plan that could help you get slimmer To your car, gasoline is energy. Put it in, the car goes. Say you came in for a fill-up of 20 gallons. But you only go 10 miles and you come back for another 20 gallons. Pretty soon you're going to have to find a place to store all that excess energy. The same is true of your body. Energy-dense foods like processed starches and desserts, most baked goods, candy, alcohol and the like, provide a lot of energy, and

unless you use it, you're going to have to find a place to put what you don't use -- such as hips and tummy. An orange contains about the same amount of potential energy, which we call calories, as a doughnut. The orange also contains water, fiber, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, phyto chemicals and antioxidant nutrients, all of which just so happen to be good for you. The orange is nutrient-dense while the

Sidney Daily News / Troy Daily News / Piqua Daily Call doughnut is just energydense. To increase your nutritionto-energy ratio, try the plan of four lists: It's all about setting priorities: 1. Foods to eat daily: Fruits, whole grains, nuts, carrots, leafy greens and green tea. 2. Food to eat three times a week: Broccoli, avocado, sweet potatoes, oily fish, yogurt. 3. Foods to eat just once a week. Red meat, pasta, all desserts and alcohol. Unfortunately, alcohol is

about as energy-dense and nutrient-light as you can get. 4. Do not eat: Fast food, soda pop with the exception of club soda, processed meals, canned soups and anything with the word "diet" in it. One more rule: Breakfast, each and every day, no exceptions. Several studies have found that people who maintain significant amounts of weight loss routinely eat breakfast. What a pleasure, to warm your face in the sun while enjoying a cool drink and a delicious salad. Restaurant patios are great places to sit outside the busy-ness and watch the world go by. Play at being a tourist. Eating on a patio is a great way to rediscover your town. Find one from where you can lift your eyes and discover the architecture, trees, and other special features of the neighborhood. Celebrate Sunday. A patio is a great place for a family brunch. Being outside takes some of the pressure off parents, whose kids will have stimulating things to look at while at the table. Relax between business meetings.
