array of displays. Barclay’s is known for displaying the merchandise in a unique and creative way, which makes for easy shopping.” The highlight of this season’s display is the two-person, horse-drawn sleigh that sits just inside the doors as a backdrop for one of the Polo Ralph Lauren displays. The sleigh is more than 100 years old and in it’s original condition. Barclay’s owners Bert and Terri Harrison’s neighbor let them borrow it for the shop. “It is just gorgeous,” Robinson said. “It’s amazing how many people come in every day and say, ‘Oh my gosh,’ and want to buy it.” Although the sleigh isn’t for sale, plenty of other items are sitting on display shelves just waiting for the procrastinating shopper. You have four days left to take them home, less if Wednesday has already come and gone.

It’s always a busy day,” he said. “There are a lot of people who want to come in and get that last special thing for someone on their list. We try to have exceptional gifts for exceptional people.” Barclay’s accomplishes that by paying attention. “We work very hard in our buying to have things that you just don’t see everywhere,” Robinson said. “We try very hard to give people a reason to come to downtown Piqua.” Robinson hopes the last minute shoppers aren’t in too much of a rush to notice the holiday displays Barclay’s has put together this year. “The store is decorated uniquely for Christmas. We do it every year, but we do it differently,” he said. “When people come in they’ll find our wide

hats and caps. “We have a really nice selection of Fossil watches for both men and women,” Robinson said. All of these items are in stock in the store, so you don’t have to worry about ordering things in. “We’re set for the lastminute shopper,” Robinson assured. “We have a great selection.” If you’re shopping last minute, that means your wrapping last minute, but Barclay’s can take care of that for you, too. The staff gift wrap everything for no extra charge, and they aren’t lazy about it. “Lots of people will buy three or four items for one person and say wrap it all together, but we like to wrap each item so they have more to open,” Robinson said. “We want to make the Christmas experience a fun one.” Barclay’s is open today, tomorrow and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Christmas Eve

PIQUA — In case you missed the signs that Christmas was coming (it’s only five days away now), Barclay’s in downtown Piqua has you covered. “It’s great place to go for last-minute shopping because we have a great selection of gifts and a wide range of prices for men, women and big and tall,” said Rick Robinson, manager at Barclay’s, 314 N. Main St. Many women would be happy to find something from Brighton or Vera Bradley under their tree on Sunday morning. Barclay’s has a wide variety of handbags, wallets, jewelry and other accessories from the popular lines. “Those are always a great last minute gift for guys to give to the women on their list,” Robinson said. Barclay’s carries men’s clothing lines, including Polo, Nautica and Tommy Bahama, which all have great gifts. Robinson said shoppers can’t go wrong with the reversible quarter-zip pullover from Tommy Bahama. “That’s a great seller. It’s Tommy Bahama’s No. 1 item,” he said, noting it’s available in a wide variety of colors. Shirts designed specifically to go with the pullovers also are available at Barclay’s. The Polo and Nautica lines also have sweaters and woven sports shirts that make great gifts, the manager said. Other items that can be picked up in a hurry include scarves, gloves,

“Our No. 1 priority is offering exceptional value without compromising quality, he said. “What many jewelers have done is keep their prices relatively stable but lower the quality of their product. I refuse to do that. Joseph explained the high value he puts on quality by saying when he’s buying a car, he asks the mechanic — not the salesman — if the car is a good buy, if it will last. “When you come to Diamond Galleria, you’re coming to a store that’s owned by the mechanic, and a store that will not cost the customer an exorbitant amount in the long run,

“Our No. 1 priority is offering exceptional value without compromising quality. — Brian Joseph he said. “We feel that people work too hard for the money they earn to waste it on a piece of jewelry that may not last five years. We make jewelry and sell jewelry that you can pass on for generations.

‘Our GEM’ Getting Diamond Galleria off the ground has been a family affair for the Josephs. The couple’s children, Greg, 17, Elizabeth, 15, and Meaghann, 11, have all gotten involved. Though the Josephs say it was a total accident that the first initial of the kids’ names spell GEM, it may not be a coincidence

after all. “It has been a fantastic project for the whole family to be part of — to create something unique for the Miami Valley to enjoy, Joseph said. The kids have helped with renovations made to the building, and Greg got his hands dirty with his dad making the display cases and a large logo that decorates the back wall of the shop. The glass display cases sit on carved wooden legs to make the showroom open and airy and break the barrier between the jeweler and the customer.

Giving back The Josephs also see the store as a way to give back to the town and people who helped them when they had hardships. “It’s about community. We’re not from New York or L.A., setting up a store and leaving, Joseph said. “We’re about Troy and the people of the upper Miami Valley. These are our

friends. This community is incredible at supporting people. We saw this as a good opportunity not to just have a business but to give something back to Troy. “I would like to express my thanks for being a part of the community. I look forward to serving the community, he continued. “I want to thank Fred Noble, Mrs. Dr. Hussain, Jan Spier, Jack and Carol Pounds and Wayne Garber. Personally, I want to thak my wife, beyond words, for all her help and support. And our kids for their hardwork, too. Being in the jewelry business allows Joseph the unique opportunity to see customers at major milestones in their lives, and he can’t wait to offer his expertise to Troy and the surrounding areas. “I love the interaction with the community, he said. “I get to be involved in weddings, anniversaries, birthdays — any celebration. It’s a celebration when you are thinking about jewelry. Throughout the holidays, Diamond Galleria is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 5 to 9 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.

Find a last-minute gift at Harris Jeweler The countdown to Christmas is almost over, only four shopping days left to find the perfect last-minute gifts for your loved ones. Fortunately for you, Harris Jeweler has tons of last-minute

gift ideas for that special someone in your life. “Most stores sell out of most of their items in the first few weeks, leaving empty cases and few items to choose from,” said Bonnie Harris Frey, owner of Harris Jeweler. “We have new items com-

ing in every day to keep the cases fresh and wellstocked. Here are some great last-minute ideas to knock her socks off this Christmas: Diamond stud earrings are always available and are the perfect gift when you are not sure what to

buy her this year. They look great on every woman, and she will usually wear them every day. If Harris Jeweler does not have the size or shape you want, its jewelers can make them within 24 hours in the design studio. Another earring staple are inside-outside diamond hoops, which are a great compliment to the diamond studs. It isn’t too late to pop the question this Christmas. Harris Jeweler always has hundreds of engagement rings in stock that can be set, sized and ready to go in about an hour. “The reason we have the most technologically advanced design studio in the area is because we want to be able to have things ready for our customers quickly,” Frey said. “Because we have such an advanced shop

on site, we can do in an hour what takes many stores weeks to send out to have done.” Chamilia beads are also a great last-minute gift for every woman on your Christmas list. “The beads are perfect for everyone from your teenage daughter to your grandmother,” Frey said. “You can customize them to fit her taste and personality.” The best part about the Chamilia line is you can add to the bracelet for other occasions, making it an easy gift idea for any occasion down the road. It also is a great gift for children to buy for their mother. Each child can pick out their own bead to put under the tree for mom. For the man in your life, a new watch is a great last-minute gift idea. Harris Jeweler carries several watch lines with price points starting at $150. The store carries

Citizen Eco-drive watches as well as a little-known Swiss-made watch line, Tavanne. “We love the Tavanne line because they are a high-quality Swiss-made time-piece that has been around for over a century,” Frey said. The watches are upto-date styles that are perfect for the watch collector who wants something unique. The store’s top pick is a mechanical skeleton watch that allows you to see the movement of the watch. And don’t forget Harris Jeweler is still having its High Tech Holiday Giveaway. This Christmas, the store is giving away an Apple iPad 2 with any purchase of more than $2,500; a 32inch high definition flat screen television with any purchase from $1,000 to $2,499; and an Amazon Kindle with any purchase from $500 to $999.

SIDNEY — The Sidney Altrusa Club has announced the speakers for its annual three-part luncheon Enrichment Series, which will begin Feb. 16 with H. Fulk is a professor at Wright State University in Celina, where he serves as the director of the Office Information Systems Program. He has past teaching experience at both the secondary and post-secondary levels. In addition, he is a certified etiquette presenter and a certified employment coach. His seminar will help people avoid the common faux pas using technology in the digital age. Many have mastered the traditional elements of business etiquette, such as using the right fork during a professional luncheon, but at a time when more business is taking place via LinkedIn, Twitter or e-mail, it is just as important, if not more so, for people to know how to present themselves professionally when using digital tools. On the way home that night, I remember watching him from the back seat of the car, thinking to myself, “I hope she’s wrong!” Throughout the years, I saw that same wink many times, at my high school graduation, right before he walked me down the aisle at my wedding, through the glass partition as I was being wheeled in for an emergency c-section. The last time I saw that wink was during the Christmas holidays 12 years ago while he was very bravely trying to recover from open heart surgery. I walked up to his bed and took his hand. He opened his eyes, stared a minute in thought, then winked. He was trying to let me know that it would be alright. My dad passed away a few days later. He was a jolly man with a BIG laugh. I hope I am just half the person that he was. I’m wishing each and every one of you a very merry Christmas! <wink>

ones. Mine started when I was probably 3 or 4 years old. Every Christmas our church would have a large Christmas party with beautiful decorations, food, music and that special ending where Santa would come in voicing his loud “Ho! Ho! Ho!” We would go sit on his lap and he would give us a brown paper bag filled with nuts, hard candy ribbons, tangerines and vanilla chocolate drops. I promptly got in line and waited for my turn to sit on St. Nick’s lap. He lifted me up and as I started to tell him that I wanted that Chatty Cathy doll so bad, something strange happened. I have sat on this lap before, I thought, like last week when I had that terrible ear ache. I looked at him square in the eyes and loudly burst out, “You’re my daddy!” He just looked at me and winked. The next thing I knew his big red velvet glove with white fur motioned to my mom to come and get me. Off to the restroom we went quickly (you know the kind where your tippy toes barely hit the ground). Now, what is all this nonsense that Santa Claus is your daddy? “Is he?” I asked. With a long pause on the grounds of St. Peters Catholic Church, my mom just had to tell me a little white lie. “Your daddy isn’t Santa Claus,” she said,

We all have that one Christmas memory from childhood that we play over in our minds every Christmas season. It may be that beautiful Barbie doll wrapped so festive under the tree, or that special candy that an aunt only made this time of year that you have been craving, or looking out into the audience of a school Christmas play where you are one of three sheep and your parents looking back at you with big smiles on their faces. No matter what memory you have of this holiday season, they will forever be with you to share with your loved
