Because of privacy laws, physicians cannot release the names of their patients, so events like the one at Buffalo Wild Wings are imperative to reaching as many people as possible. Also, because Dayton Children’s does not do heart surgery, children are often sent to Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland and other cities across the U.S. Mended Little Hearts reaches out to chapters in those towns, so when the kids come back to Dayton, they can still get the support they need. Hearts • CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 about Mended Little Hearts in Dayton, Chalecki said the group does fundraisers and attends health fairs. It also provides care bags, with basic toiletries, coloring books and information on the support group, to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and to local cardiologists to give to their patients. Currently, 80 families are being served by Mended Little Hearts, including residents of Sidney, Troy and Tipp City. Chalecki is hoping with Buffalo Wild Wings locations in Sidney and Troy participating in the fundraiser for the first time, more families will
hear about the organization and seek it out for support. “The is new for Troy and Sidney this year, so we’re excited to have them on board and they seem to be real excited about joining up with us,” Chalecki said. Mended Little Hearts’ first fundraiser was at a restaurant at The Greene, and Chalecki said guests didn’t believe that the kids running around were born with heart defects. “These kids … they’re amazing,” he said. “They put up with it, they do it and they just go on and enjoy life.” The group also strives to educate the community on heart disease, especially the children who were born with heart de-
fects who are turning 18. They often stop regularly seeing their doctor, not realizing they should continue check-ups for the rest of their lives. Mended Hearts, the adult program, started in the 1950s nationally, and the Dayton group was established in the ’70s, Chalecki said. In 2004, the organization realized a program specifically for children was needed. “Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defects in the U.S.,” Chalecki said. “Two to 3 million Americans are born with congenital heart defects.” For more information, call Chalecki at (937) 4395648, email him at rchalecki@woh.rr.com or visit wrighthearts.org.

New salon offers relaxing vibe BY LINDY JURACK iN75 Editor PIQUA — There’s a new salon in Piqua where you can get pampered and styled and feel like you’re much farther from home. Arabella, 312 W. Water St., opened its doors in December and provides a relaxing environment that can soothe the soul. “A lot of people don’t spend money on vacations, and I feel like this is their vacation. It’s a special treat,” said owner and stylist Betsy O’Neal. The building, which used to house a realty company, has gone through an extensive renovation and now has a contemporary chic design with black furniture, soft gray walls, funky chairs and bright lime green accents. The reception and hair salon area has an open, airy feel, and the massage and nail rooms are pri-
vate and personal. O’Neal’s goal is for Arabella to offer comfort, style and personalized one-onone attention with every customer. Born and raised in Piqua, O’Neal started working in a salon when she was 16 years old, and she has been doing hair for 13 years. “I was ready to create my own environment, something people could come into a feel pampered,” she said. “It’s definitely my dream.” Arabella, which is Dutch for “beautiful,” is a full-service salon, offering hair and nail care, permanent makeup and massage services. All the stylists are licensed and operate as independent contractors. Haircuts and styles are offered for women, men, children and special events. Hair color, root touch-up, highlights, perms and wave
reducer also is offered. In addition to O’Neal, the stylists are Jennifer McKenna, Tiffany Shepherd, Jena Phlipot and Nicole Swier. Shepherd also is the permanent makeup technician, and offers top and bottom eyeliner as well as eyebrow makeup. “This is definitely a salon where you can bring in the grandfather and grandson and everybody in between,” O’Neal said. Bonnie Kiefer, licensed managing nail technician, offers manicures, pedicures, Shellac, gel application, acrylics and more. “We have a beautiful manicure and pedicure room. You don’t feel like you’re in Piqua,” O’Neal said. Massage services at Arabella include hot stone massage, chair massage, couple’s massage, raindrop therapy, craniosacral therapy and reflexology, includ-
ing ionic foot detox. April Toopes and Jennifer Heckman, both licensed massage therapists, offer their services at Arabella. “Valentine’s Day is a great time to get a couple’s massage,” O’Neal said. Walk-ins are welcome for all services, but appointments are recommended. Through February, Toopes and Heckman are offering $5 off massages, and Phlipot is offering 20 percent off her services for hair or manicures and pedicures. The salon also offers several products for sale, including Kenra, Joico Aquage, Paul Mitchell and DS Laboratory hair care products; OPI and CND nail products; and Biofreeze, a pain relief cream. For more information on Arabella, call the salon at (937) 773-8681 or find it on Facebook.

It’s a Tuesday, and the farther it gets from the weekend, the busier we get,” Lori said. The reason for this is customers often have arrangements delivered to their sweetheart’s workplace. One tip for the lucky women who get flowers at work is to pay attention to the weather. If it is below freezing outside, Your Personal Florist delivers arrangements wrapped to protect the flowers from the cold. Roses will be available in Valentine’s Day colors such as pink, yellow, bi-color and, of course, red, the most popular. Other flowers also make good Valentine’s Day gifts. “Roses aren’t for everybody. We’ll have beautiful mixed arrangements with tulips, spray roses, gerber daises and hydrangeas,” she said. “We’ll have all the Valentine’s Day colors as well as hot pinks, oranges and yellow. If your valentine doesn’t like pastels, you can get that bright pop of color.” Your Personal Florist also is offering inflated balloons with stuffed animals inside, a product it is reintroducing. It’s a little more labor intensive, so a 24hour notice is required. Other Valentine’s Day themed balloons are available at the shop, as are candy bouquets or junk food baskets. know what I mean. EGH! I have found several new and exciting recipes that I will be sharing with you in the upcoming months. So keep your head up and a smile on your face, the sun is on it’s way! Southwest Chicken Stew 1 whole chicken (about 3 1/2 pounds) 1 onion, chopped 2 red or green bell pepper, cut in cubes 2 Roma tomatoes, sliced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 teaspoon oregano 1 bay leaf 2 jalapeno, seeded, sliced Cayenne to taste 2 cups chicken broth 2 cups water 1 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper Combine all of the ingredients in a large stock pot, big enough for the chicken as well. Bring to a simmer, turn the heat down to very low, cover and simmer gently for 1 1/2 hours. Carefully remove chicken and break into serving pieces. Skim the excess fat from the top of the broth, and add the chicken back in. Taste and adjust seasoning. I serve this with tortilla chip on the side.

That alone will make you in a good mood. I sit at a computer most of the day, but at lunch I try to walk as much as I can. It just clears my mind, and then I’m ready for the last half of the day. Sunlight in the winter months is what we are missing and what our bodies are craving, so try some things like leaving your blinds up most of the day to let light in. Sit near the window when dinning out and try changing your light bulbs to full spectrum. These bulbs mimic natural light and have the same effect as the real thing. I also like to keep fresh flowers in my house most of the winter months. Green plants in your home also provide oxygen and clear the air. This is also the time to get into a good book. “The Help” was a good one for me this year. Spring magazines are all in full swing, as well as seed catalogs, so start planning your garden. Last year, if you remember, we put in a raised vegetable garden and loved it. This year we are putting in an herb garden, so I am hitting the catalogs like crazy. Actually, if you just embrace the season instead of avoiding it, the time goes much faster I believe. Enjoy the winter sports of sledding, ice skating or even a good hockey game. This is also the time of year when I dig out all of my cookbooks and go over and try new recipes. I think we all get caught in the same old food rut. Spaghetti on Monday, hot dogs on Tuesday … you

Well, we have made it! We are halfway through our winter months, so let’s try to keep the winter blues away. Even though it has been a very mild winter, I have heard several people saying they still have the blues. There are several things you can do to keep yourself on track until you see that purple crocus popping his head up through the ground yelling, “Spring is almost here!” Exercise is one of the keys to help stop the blues. Even though you want to curl up on the couch with your favorite blanket, you can’t! You got to get up and start moving to get your mind to start releasing those “feel good chemicals.”
