Sidney native steers LaComedia’s ‘Titanic’ playing the older roles in shows. “I knew when I decided to act full-time I was already too old for the glamorous leading man roles, but there are many, many good character roles out there. And in these economic times, being a working actor is actually a rare commodity,” he said. Having most recently toured with “Church Basement Ladies II: A Second Helping” as the pastor, Given has spent the last six years at Dollywood in Tennessee, portraying a variety of characters for Christmas productions. He spent five years as host of the “Medora Musical” in North Dakota, and has also performed with the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” and “The King & I.” “Titanic” is a musical with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and book by Peter Stone. It is set on
the ocean liner RMS Titanic, which sank on its maiden voyage on April 15, 1912. Yeston’s interest in writing a musical about the famous disaster started with the discovery of the wreckage in 1985. The show opened on Broadway in April 1997 to mostly negative reviews, but later became a surprise hit. Given portrayed Titanic owner Bruce Ismay in Van Wert Civic Theatre’s production of “Titanic” in 2001 and designed the award-winning set. Even though everyone knows the ending of the show, the memories of her courageous passengers and crew are honored in this grand musical featuring a wonderful musical score, stunning costumes, beautiful sets and dazzling special effects. Without actually knowing any one person involved with this tragedy, the show brings the audience on-

SPRINGBORO — Sidney native Dale Given is playing a lead role in LaComedia Dinner Theatre’s current production of the musical “Titanic.” This April marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic, and LaComedia is remembering “the ship of dreams” by presenting the musical now through April 29. Given is portraying Captain Edward J. Smith in the Tony award-winning show, which won for best musical in 1997. For the last few years, Given has been traveling the country performing, having first performed for LaComedia as Mayor Shinn in “Music Man” in 2004. He is actually a bit younger than Captain Smith was when he went down with the ship. “Smith had been on board ships for 43 years when he helmed Titanic,” Given said. “He started out as a cabin boy.” Given doesn’t mind

TROY — For 20 years, Dunaway’s, Troy’s Irish pub, has been throwing a party for St. Patrick’s Day, and this year is no different, though a few new things have been added to the celebration. Dunaway’s, 508 W. Main St., opens its doors Saturday at 9 a.m. The party happens in the bar, already conveniently decorated for the occasion, and outside in a tent that will be set up in the parking lot. The tent, set up by Wolf Awning, will have tables and chairs, and heat if necessary. “Come celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with us,” said owners Sandy Dunaway and Brenda Ludwig. “We’re ready for you.” Green Miller Light and Bud Light will be on draft, along with Killian’s and Guinness. Irish car bombs, Celtic coolers and other drinks will be available at the bar. “We’ll have pitchers of green beer you can share with your friends,” Brenda said.

Local bands will entertain the crowd from 11 a.m. to midnight. Music in the tent starts at noon. Bands to perform are Gary Hill, 3 AM, Frohna and Warren, Pearl Street and See Alice Jones. Hamburgers, hot dogs and Irish bangers will be on the grill all day. Shepherd’s pie and Irish stew, which aren’t usually on the menu, will be served on Saturday. New this year, Dunaway’s full menu will be available to order from inside the bar and out back. Also new for 2012 is a photo booth set up for guests to record their memories. A couple vendors will be on hand, including a glass blower who will have glass for sale. The Monster Girls and Bud Girls also will make an appearance at the party. Dunaway’s recently celebrated it’s 20th year of business, and it has been hosting a St. Patrick’s Day bash since its first year. The party has grown quite a bit since then, and they’ve had to spread it outside for about 15 years.
“Every year has beat the year before for 20 years,” Sandy said. He and Brenda expect to see 1,500 people come in the bar this Saturday. They are hoping for good weather, which they say always makes for a bigger and better party. They’ve seen it all, including snow piled on the tent and wind that wouldn’t even let the tent stay up. They’re also excited the green holiday falls on the weekend. “It hasn’t been on Saturday in six years,” Brenda said. The Dunaway’s party is the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebration north of Dayton. “You don’t have to go all the way to Dayton for a party,” Sandy said. Drinking and driving is always a worry on St. Patrick’s Day, and Dunaway’s has a way to avoid any danger. Gofers Chauffeurs will be at the bar to give guests a safe ride home. People also can arrange to be picked up and brought to the party. For more information, call Dunaway’s at (937) 335-8608.

Buffalo Wild Wings Troy to open early Manager: ‘Wear your green to win our green’ this St. Patrick’s Day TROY — For the first time, Buffalo Wild Wings in Troy is embracing the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day and opening early in the morning for all those who are Irish — which is everyone this Saturday. The celebration will begin at 8 a.m. The St. Patrick’s Day party lasts all day, but most of the activities are planned for the morning. From 8 to 10 a.m., the kitchen will serve up Eggs O’Brien to guests for free. Drink specials will include green beer, Guinness, Irish car bombs, pot
of gold, wee beers and more. Drink specials run until 9 p.m. All party-goers must be 21 or older. Brian Keith, of Name That Tune, will be the master of ceremonies for the morning. He will play music and games and keep the party going. A real pot of gold will be the coveted prize of the morning. Guests will have the chance to win the pot of 100 $1 gold coins by participating in a photo scavenger hunt game. Up close photos have been taken of small details in the restaurant and will be displayed on Saturday. To play, just guess what the photos are of, and if you
guess everything correctly, your name goes into the drawing for the pot of gold. Buffalo Wild Wings’ operations manager Kelly Gressett and service manager Darcy Bruns encourage everyone to “wear your green to win our green.” A money tree will be set up at the bar, and guests can do things to get Buffalo Wild Wings staff to put money on it, such as wearing green or dancing an Irish jig. Everyone who comes to the party will get a raffle ticket, and at 10:45 a.m., a ticket will be drawn and the winner gets the tree. The pot of gold winner also will be drawn at 10:45

Home and Away with Dana Wolfe Saints to shamrocks It doesn’t matter if you’re Irish “in some way” or Irish for the day, you have to admit St. Patrick’s Day is a fun holiday across the board. From big tough guys serving up green beer, to their Irish wannabe buddies to the classroom moms thinking of new and different party ideas, green is the color of the day and shamrocks are everywhere. It is time my friends to head to the grocery store for green food coloring. Tinting white food such as yogurt, milk and even bread is a fun way to start that day. Put a few drops of food coloring in scrambled eggs or a little in cream cheese for that morning

bagel. Load your kids’ school lunches with sliced green peppers, cucumbers, broccoli and even green popcorn. Fun! I, of course, always have corned beef and cabbage for dinner that day. This year, I may add a little to my Irish soda bread to give it that green hue. If you like pesto, you can add a small amount to your favorite pasta for a little holiday tribute. That would be your Italian/Irish meal of the day. It’s OK to cross over a little. Oh, and don’t forget spinach! This is a good time to serve a nice spinach salad with a little Irish stew, remembering green is the color of the day. Spinach salad is so easy to assemble these days as it comes already washed and cleaned in the bags. I like to boil a couple of eggs, slice a red onion, crumble three strips of turkey bacon over a nice bed of spinach. A simple dressing is some red wine vinegar with olive oil, sugar and celery seeds. Whisk as you add in the olive oil. This recipe has no directions as I do it to taste. We like ours a little tart. But trust me, you will love it on spinach salad. No matter what your plans are for the day, stop and thank St. Patrick for a day that we can forget about our worries and strife, and celebrate with family and friends. Erin go bragh to my family in County Cork, Ireland! Corned Beef Calzones 2 teaspoons oil 1 large onion finely chopped 3 cups shredded green cabbage, chopped 1 carrot, peeled and chopped

Shape dough into a 12inch long log on a slightly floured board, adding flour as needed to prevent sticking. Divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll or pat out one piece of dough into a 6inch circle. Biscotti with Apricots 1 cup hazelnuts 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter at room temperature 1 cup sugar Finely grated rind of 1 lemon 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups plus 2 tablespoons, all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup dried apricots, chopped Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread hazelnuts on a baking sheet and toast in oven eight to 10 minutes, until fragrant. Let cool slightly. Place nuts in a dishtowel and rub together to remove some of the skin. Coarsely chop
and set aside. Place butter in the bowl of a stand mixer. Beat on medium speed until soft and creamy. Gradually add sugar and beat until light and fluffy, about two minutes. Add lemon rind and eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla and beat well. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Stir to blend. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture, beating on low until a smooth dough forms. Stir in hazelnuts and apricots. Divide dough in half. With lightly floured hands, form dough into two 10-inch by 2-inch logs. Place on an ungreased baking sheet, at least two inches apart. Bake 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool on the baking sheet 15 minutes. Transfer logs to a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, cut straight down through the log to make 1inch thick slices; discard end pieces. Arrange on a baking sheet. Bake nine minutes or until lightly browned. Turn biscotti over and continue baking until lightly browned on the other side, about 9 minutes. Let cool completely on the baking sheets before serving or storing. The biscotti store well for one week and freeze well.

It is done in a healthy pet so that a baseline is available for comparison if the pet does become sick. Routine blood work in apparently healthy animals also can help veterinarians discover problems before the pet becomes symptomatic. Early diagnosis can lead to more effective treatment or control of the problem, which can in turn help the pet live a longer and healthier life. Having blood work performed when your pet is young, such as when it is spayed or neutered, will
provide an excellent baseline and also ensure the pet is healthy prior to undergoing anesthesia. It is a good idea to have blood work performed before any anesthetic procedure. The results can alert the veterinarian to problems that should be addressed or considered prior to anesthetizing your pet to make the procedure as safe as possible. In senior pets, it is a good idea to have routine blood work performed at least annually. When a pet begins to be considered “senior” varies a little by species and breed. Check with your veterinarian about when to start doing routine blood work in your pet.
