Troy Tipp Lawn hosts showcase sale See what’s new this spring season, talk to reps from top brands BY LINDY JURACK iN75 Editor TROY — Spring sprung early this year, and so did everyone’s grass. If you’re in need of new lawn equipment, have questions about your current tools or just want to see what’s new in lawn care this season, stop by the 22nd annual Manufacturer’s Showcase Sale at Troy Tipp Lawn Equipment Superstore this weekend. This Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., representatives from the top brands in lawn care will be on site at Troy Tipp Lawn Equipment Super-

The store carries riding mowers, zero-turn mowers, lawn tractors, rear-engine mowers, walk-behind power mowers, trimmers, edgers, chainsaws, blowers,

hedge clippers and more. “We have anything you need to get your yard in shape and keep it that way,” said owner Dallas Graham. During the showcase, customers will be allowed to test drive any piece of equipment in the shop. Graham said everything in the store has been serviced and is ready to run. Special sales and incentives will be offered throughout the day, including extra dollars off purchases made that day on certain items. Graham said he started hosting a showcase sale 22 years ago as a way for people to have contact with the brand representatives while seeing what’s new for the year. One of the new products this season is the Toro TimeMaster. The new 30-inch, walkbehind mower is simple to use and store, but best of all, it can cut your lawn up to 40 percent faster than the typical 21-inch model. Troy Tipp Lawn Equipment has a video customers can watch that shows the TimeMaster’s 30-inch cutting deck featuring a twin-blade cutting system. The Personal Pace automatic drive system allows the mower to adapt to your speed, and a traction-assist handle helps tame uneven terrain. The larger capacity bag captures more clippings without sacrificing

The SpinStop system allows you to stop the cutting blades without shutting off the engine, making it quicker to pick up obstacles in your path. The handle height can be adjusted for any user, and the quick-stow lever makes for easy storage. “If you have a big lawn and a busy schedule, this mower is for you,” said Matthew Medden, senior marketing manager for Toro, in a press release. “Originally, we designed the TimeMaster for homeowners who were looking to buy a small riding mower, but didn’t have the room to store it. What we found is that bigger really

is better when it comes to any lawn-mowing task. If you can get the job done faster, that’s pretty appealing for any homeowner.” Graham has already sold several Toro TimeMasters, but will have some on hand at the Manufacturer’s Showcase Sale for people to test. The unseasonably warm weather has boosted sales at Troy Tipp Lawn Equipment, but Graham anticipates the busiest months are still to come. “Over 80 percent of mowers sold are sold during this time of year,” Graham said. “The next six to eight weeks will be our busiest time of year.” People buying those

mowers and any equipment from a dealer such as Troy Tipp Lawn Equipment, instead of a mass marketer, get the knowledge and experience of the staff, who can offer oneon-one advice to customers. “We dealers have a wider array of equipment,” Graham said. “We can help customers get the right equipment rather than the wrong equipment.” For example, Graham pointed out two mowers that look similar, but one is more expensive than the other. “I can tell you if you’re mowing for an hour or 15 minutes at a time, which mower suits you better and what will make your lawn look better,” he said. Graham also said he can help people from under-buying or over-buying by pointing out the exact right tool for that customer’s job, in some cases saving customers from spending more money than they need to. Another benefit of buying straight from a dealer is not having to assemble anything or figure out how to get products running. Troy Tipp Lawn Equipment sets up all its products, tests them and has them ready to mow at purchase. The staff is available to answer customers’ questions, and the store services all makes and models, not just the ones it sells. For more information, call the store at (937) 3355993 or (937) 898-1550. Regular business hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

New gallery seeks artists TROY — Local artists are invited to a special gallery preview party on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the new Art Vault Gallery in downtown Troy. Artists will have the opportunity to tour the former First National Bank of Troy (built in 1908) and complete an application to secure gallery space. Developer Patty Rose is working to bring the fine arts gallery to the historic downtown and is offering booth rental space for $25 per month to $350 per month. The 32 available spaces and booths range from 27 square feet to 150 square feet. The vignettes from the building’s previous tenant help divide the space into rooms. Rent will cover all utilities and expenses, and there will be no commission to pay. Artists will be asked to commit to the space for six months and volunteer up to four hours per month. Rose said some of the larger spaces have huge picture windows and great light. “This building just screams to be a gallery,” she said. Rose plans to open the gallery on May

1, and will require all applications by April 10. The Art Vault Gallery is located in the southeast quadrant of the public square on East Main Street. Gallery hours will likely be noon to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. It will operate as a showcase for artists to exhibit and sell their work. Rose feels the evening gallery hours will capitalize on the strong restaurant draw in downtown Troy, which boasts 14 independent restaurants and coffee shops. “We are already a dining destination. The Art Vault Gallery will add to the experience and become a destination itself,” she said. Rose is the president of Troy Main Street Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to the economic development and revitalization of downtown Troy. In addition, Rose owns and operates two downtown Troy businesses, the Leaf & Vine and Patty Rose & Associates-Allstate Insurance. Interested artists are invited to contact Rose at (937) 524-6443 or pattyisarose@gmail.com.

Old Sidney school becomes a home Family takes on 12,000-square-foot project in DIY fashion doors with ones you’d find on a house instead of the more business-like pushbar doors there now. She plans to fill the space with wrought iron furniture and plants for a welcoming look. Double doors off the entryway open into the building, and the staircase is the first thing you see. The two floors are almost identical in layout. An out-oforder elevator is on the left, but the couple doesn’t plan to fix it up.

Chalkboards in the master bedroom came down, and Sara painted the area on the wall to hang photos and art. Another wall of chalkboards will be covered by mirrors and used as a vanity area. A large closet is another project they have to tackle. No chalkboards had to be taken down in the room the girls will share. Heaven, 10, and Lyric, 6, are ecstatic about being able to write on their walls and have already put their names on the boards. “They love the chalkboards. They think it’s so cool,” Sara said.

Bathroom re-do Next to the girls’ room is a bathroom that served the boys of the school. The Prinzis plan to make this

their main bathroom by taking out the stalls and urinals and having just one toilet. They’ll add an 8-foot granite counter top with two sinks, a claw-foot tub and a glass-block shower. Outside the bathroom is a coat rack and hall area that has stairs leading up and outside. They plan to put up some bookshelves and use this space as a library. Directly opposite the main staircase is a ramp leading down to what was the school’s cafeteria. The 3,000-square-foot space will become the Prinzi’s living room and dining room. On the back wall are doorways leading into the kitchen, a surprisingly small space for a school kitchen, but the perfect size for a home. The original wooden cabinets were in good enough shape for the Prinzis to keep. Off the kitchen is a space they intend to use for a laundry room. Heading upstairs, you

come into an open area with large classrooms to the left and right, just like the bedrooms downstairs. One will eventually become a music room for Joey, who was in a band in Lima. The rest of the upstairs has spaces the family plans to rent out for parties.

Party rentals The large classroom to the right of the stairs is a bright sky blue with a large tree and rainbow painted on the wall. Sara guesses the church that occupied the building used it as a nursery. The Prinzis plan to do some repairs to the walls and ceiling, but mostly keep that room the same. It’ll be perfect to rent out for kids’ birthday parties. The couple already had been hosting kids’ parties before buying the school, specializing in Pony Parties where their live ponies make appearances. They also have pigs and chickens, all of which they

plan on bringing to the new home once they turn the four-car garage in back of the property into a barn. “This is what happens when you’re a little girl that always wanted a pony but you live in town,” Sara said.

City kids She and Joey grew up as city kids in Lima, but once the high school sweethearts got out on their own, they headed for the country, got some animals and never considered living in town again. Also in the upper level of the building is a large room they intend to make available for weddings, banquets, graduation parties or any get-togethers people need more space for. The room mirrors the former cafeteria below, and the church used it as its sanctuary. The Prinzis have finished the upstairs handicap bathroom, and will use it as their main bathroom until they finish the one downstairs. The school’s girls’ restroom upstairs next to the large banquet room will keep its stalls for use by guests at events. What used to be the principal’s office will become storage space. The building sits on 4 acres, part of which will be fenced off for the family’s animals. They plan to set up an outdoor patio space and a sand volleyball court, which Sara hopes will entice high school seniors to have graduation parties there. While they’ve become day-trippers to the local home improvement store, they’ve also picked up several things at auctions. Sara nabbed tables for the banquet room, ironically, at a school auction, and

Mixed reactions The Prinzis have turned a few heads with their endeavor. A couple stopped by one weekend and said they went to school there 50 years ago and wanted to look around. “They pointed out where their classrooms were and were glad someone was doing something with it,” Sara said. Their friends have been curious and wanting to see it, and their parents

have had mixed reactions. “His parents think it’s cool and see a lot of possibilities,” Sara said. “Mine think I’m absolutely nuts.” Nuts or not, they are too far into the project now to turn around and they have no intention of doing so. Sara’s hoping to have the downstairs bathroom finished in six months, and be happy with the state of the whole house in nine months to a year. But like any home renovation, they’ve accepted they’ll probably never be truly finished with it.

Each of the 10 plays in the late August Wilson’s famed “Pittsburgh Cycle” covers a different decade of the 1900s in an urban African-American neighborhood, and “Gem,” while the next-to-last written, is the first chronologically. It’s set in 1904, an age when slavery no longer exists but oppression remains all too real, and where the problems of the residents seem overwhelming. At the core of the story is Aunt Ester, whose life includes a journey to America on a slave ship, and who uses her experiences to bring moral guidance to new generations. 126 N. Nature gallery TROY — Brukner Nature Center’s art gallery is featuring photographer Nina Harfmann, a photographer, writer and naturalist from southwest Ohio. Her work is featured in Brukner’s own newly renovated exhibit space, as well as the 2012 Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp. Harfmann’s “Beside Little Pond” is a presentation of images strung together like beads on a cord with a line of simple, original text. Taken over a three-year period as she repeatedly made visits to a small area on the bank of a vernal pool in her own backyard, the sequence of photographs captures the change of season and the quiet beauty of the pool’s changing life. Those who know a vernal pool, know well of its transformative power. For those who yet may not know one, the images held within this exhibit will engage and inspire further exploration. 5995 Horseshoe Bend Road ◆ Now through June 17 ◆ www.bruknernaturecenter.com ◆ (937) 6986493 ‘Changing Landscapes’ DAYTON — Two visually stunning exhibitions are on display at the Dayton Art Institute — “Changing Landscapes: Contemporary Chinese Fiber Art” and “Maya Lin: Flow” — both on view now through June 17. “Changing Landscapes” is the first exhibition of contemporary Chinese fiber art to travel to the United States and features 45 works by 48 artists. all said and done, they brought their babies by for a quick look of approval … I’m sure. Everyone is out and about getting ready for this Easter weekend. Right now the sounds of mowers and weed eaters are glorious! Spring is a new beginning. Everything is fresh and new again. I just love the smell in the air. This winter was good to us, and I am very thankful for that. I am not a good driver in the snow, but I drive great in the spring. Put the sunroof back, put some good Motown music on, and yes, I am that person you have probably spotted at a red light singing with everything I have! Yes, I have a lot of hand motions like I am directing the band, and yes, I hear you honking at me to move through that green light! This Easter weekend, between putting the ham in the oven, coloring the eggs and filling the baskets, take some time to just take a drive and see all the beauty that this spring has brought to us so early! Easter Ham 1 fully cooked bone-in ham (8-10 pounds) 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup orange juice 2 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon stoneground mustard 2 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon grated orange peel 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves Place ham on rack in a shallow roasting pan. Score the surface of the ham, making diamond shapes 1/2 inch deep.

Bake at 325 degrees for 1 3/4 hours. In a small bowl, combine the remaining ingredients. Spoon over ham. Bake 1520 minutes longer or until a meat thermometer reads 140 degrees. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Stuffed Red Potatoes 24 small red potatoes (about 2 pounds) 1/4 cup butter, cubed 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese, divided 1/2 cup crumbled cooked bacon, divided 2/3 cup sour cream 1 egg, lightly beaten 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/8 teaspoon paprika Put potatoes in a saucepan and bring to a light boil. Reduce heat; cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until tender. Drain. When cool enough to handle, cut a thin slice off the top of each potato. Scoop out the pulp, leaving a thin shell. Cut a thin slice off the bottom to level potato. In a large bowl, mash the potato tops and pulp with butter. Set aside 2 tablespoons each of sour cream and bacon for garnish; add remaining cheese and

bacon to potatoes. Stir in the sour cream, egg, salt and pepper. Spoon mixture into potato shells. Top with remaining cheese and bacon; sprinkle with paprika. Place in an ungreased baking pan. Bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes.

Hasn’t this year just flown by? It seems like I just covered my bulbs for a nice long winter, and here they are all popping up and so beautiful. The colors this spring are so bright. The purple and yellow pansies are at their best. My Bradford pear tree was just stunning when the blooms popped. The little finches (about 20 or more) are starting to turn their bright yellow color and going through seed like it’s their job. A pair of ducks from the creek that runs behind our house have again appeared on my patio. It was quite a shock when I looked out last year and saw them at my back door. When it was
