Merle Norman plans giveaways for open house TROY — Start your holiday shopping and get a free gift at the same time at the 16th annual open house at Merle Norman Cosmetics and Salon, 1444 W. Main St., Nov. 4 from noon to 4 p.m. Store owner Kathy Husemann is going bigger than ever this year with giveaways. To honor the store’s 16 years of business, a special gift will be given to the first 16 people in the door, as well as the second 16 people who attend. The first 16 people will receive a Vera Bradley Back Sack, which is a drawstring bag, and a cosmetic case in a matching pattern. The bag will include Merle Norman products and coupons. The entire gift is valued at $160. The next 16 people who attend will receive a Vera Bradley Tech Case, which can hold a camera, iPod, phone and more. They also will get a Vera Bradley lanyard and reusable shopper tote, along with Merle Norman products and coupons. Everyone who comes to the open house will receive a gift with large Merle Norman samples, coupons and various surprises. Two coupons everyone will receive will be good for $10 off any $50 purchase in the store. One will be good for December, and the other for January. In addition to all the free swag, customers will receive 20 percent off any purchase made during the open house. This is one of only two storewide sales Merle Norman offers. Also, the hair salon will offer a deal on gift cards. For every $25 gift card sold, the buyer will receive an

additional $10 gift card free. There is no limit on how many each person may buy. “We do this to thank people for being our customers, and so people can get gifts and save a little money at the same time,” Husemann said. First-time Merle Norman customers are encouraged to make an appointment before the open house for a free makeup consultation. “That way they can pick out the products they want to purchase and we’ll set it aside for them to buy during the open house, so they can get the 20 percent off,” Husemann said. Customers who already know which products they’d like to buy may call their order in ahead and purchase it during the open house to receive the discount. Makeovers and makeup lessons are offered all the time at Merle Norman. Merle Norman will have its new color collection for the holidays available for purchase. Every season, Merle Norman keeps an eye on the fashion industry and selects its palettes according to what’s in style. “This season’s shades celebrate the whimsical yet opulent nature of winter,” states the brochure for the winter 2012 collection. “Eyes are cinematic, smoky and jewel-toned, while lips stand out like stained glass, ranging from demure to wine-stained. Cheeks are soft and subtle.” Two bold red compacts, one for lips and the other for eyes, make great gifts. NYC actors hit Sidney stage in ‘Fiddler’ SIDNEY — Gateway Arts Council is delighted to present the national tour of “Fiddler on the Roof” Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Sidney High School Auditorium with a cast of more than 20 professional actors. “Fiddler on the Roof,” based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, has captured the hearts of people all over the world with its humor, warmth and honesty. The universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. In the little village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor milkman is trying to keep his family’s traditions in place. Yet, times are changing. And when Tevye’s daughters want to make their own matches, he must choose between his own daughters’ happiness and those beloved traditions that keep the outside world at bay. Yet it is Tevye’s love of his family, pride and faith that help him face the dangerous forces in Anatevka that threaten to destroy the very life he and his fel-

low villagers are trying to preserve. The show is filled with a rousing, heartwarming score, including “Tradition,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were A Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.” According to the New York Daily News, “Fiddler on the Roof” is a “universal story of hope, love and acceptance, a stunning, joyful and jubilant musical masterpiece.” Jimmy Ferraro, as Tevye the dairyman, displays vividly his conflict between matchmaking traditions and the modern idea of marrying for love and the conflict between comfortable apathy and political dissent. A native New Yorker, Ferraro received early recognition at age 16 when he starred at New York’s Top Hat Nightclub followed by command engagements at the Plaza Hotel, Limelight, Upstairs/Downstairs, Don’t Tell Mamma’s and San Su San. Ferraro was a regular on radio’s Ray Heatherton, “the Merry Mailman,” Breakfast Show. Early in his career, he was hand chosen by Jerome Robbins

you will pay the lesser price. Owner Chad Mason, who opened the shop in August 2011 with his family, made the tough decision to close for the winter simply because business slows down in the colder months. The shop will be open through Nov. 11. Hours will be 2 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 11, the last day before hibernation sets in. Mason predicts winter will come early this year, just as spring, summer and fall did. He plans to reopen in early March. “We would have loved to stay open all winter, but there’s a reason businesses like ours don’t,” Mason

said. “We’ve had two successful summers. Our customer base is growing and we see new customers all the time, so it’s not a decision we made lightly.” The hibernation sale is a way to thank customers for their business during the summer season, but it also gives Mason a way of using up inventory that won’t hibernate well. Once yogurt flavors and toppings run out, they won’t be refilled, so hurry in to get your favorite flavor combination at just $2.50. “It’s a heck of a deal,” Mason said. Speaking of flavors, pumpkin pie is currently in the dispensers. So is

green apple sorbet, which Mason said tastes great with caramel topping and a cinnamon stick. Due to customer demands, a second flavor sweetened with stevia has been added to the wall. Peppermint and strawberry are now available with stevia, a natural sweetener that can be consumed by those who can’t have sugar. Mason said he will try out chocolate stevia before he closes for the season. Mason already has some plans for next season, starting with a grand reopening in March. He’s also going to do a Christmas in July promotion, so

customers can enjoy the holiday flavors they’ll miss out on while the shop hibernates. Mason admitted a hidden agenda in that — his own personal favorite flavor is eggnog. Loyalty punch cards will still be honored when the shop re-opens next year. Visit the Silver Spoon Frozen Treat Factory, 1446 W. Main St., or call (937) 552-9002. You can also check it out at www.silverspoonfrozentreats.com or on Facebook. Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m., Friday from 2 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Twenty antique dealers sell a variety of different merchandise at Benkin Antiques, including early country pieces, fine pieces, an assortment of dishware and glassware, jewelry, cut glass and China. Memorabilia from the ’50s, such as gas pumps and neon signs, also are available. Evelyn Staub, who owns the building with her husband, Ben, said many of the antique dealers will offer discounts during Winter’s Gathering. Refreshments also will be available. Art demonstrations will be going on in the gallery, and Staub will be on hand to show the exhibits. Five women who represent companies including Avon and Thirty One will sell items. “In the art gallery, we have a lot of giftable items. The store does have a showroom, but also orders in much of its merchandise. Catalogs for each brand it carries always are available for browsing at the store. Owner Pete Sugden said the store currently has Amish rocking chairs available for Christmas. Sugden’s carries a lot of Amish furniture, as well as major lines out of North Carolina. “We are real careful about quality,” he said. “We enjoy the reputation of being one of the few stores in Dayton that sells quality furniture.” Sugden is one of the only stores in the area that carries Kingsdown beds. The brand offers customers the unique option to lay down on a computerized mattress in the store and have it select the right bed for you. It can even have two different sides for couples. Because Sugden special orders most things, it’s able to offer top-ofthe-line brands at low prices. “We are extremely competitive on pricing,” Sugden said. “If customers have seen something they want, we can get it for less.” Sugden Furniture will be open Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Winter’s Gathering. found the best gift ever — her thumbprint on a jelly cookie page. Happy cooking! Email me at dwolfe@tdnpublishing.com. Here are some recipes from my grandmother Hazel Hyland’s cookbooks: Russian Tea Cookies 1 cup ground walnuts 1 cup butter (not oleo) 3/4 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla Combine ingredients and knead to a smooth dough. Shape 1 teaspoon dough at a time into small crescents, about 1 1/2 inch long. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet in a 350-degree oven for 15-17 minutes, until slightly brown. While cookies are still warm, roll in vanilla sugar (see below). Cool completely and roll again. Vanilla Sugar: Cut two or three vanilla beans in inchlong pieces. Place in a jar with 1 pound sifted confectioners sugar and let stand three to four days. 24-Hour Fruit Salad 2 egg yolks 1/4 cup cream 1/4 cup sugar 1/8 teaspoon salt Juice of two lemons Cook in double boiler until thickened, stirring constantly.

I can read anywhere, like in a park, at the beach under a large umbrella or in the car while waiting on Mark to come out of Radio Shack — that is good for at least three chapters. I’m not so sure that I would love carrying a Kindle to these places. I force my friends to read books. I always get a friend a book for every birthday even though she too has a Kindle. I recently sent my nephew who just turned 2 a book for his birthday … not a Kindle, but a real book that he can carry around. His parents read two books to him before bed every night without fail. I hope he grows up and becomes a book lover like his Aunt Dana! I was once told that a person’s character was defined by how many hardback books they have displayed in their home. We have a lot, so I hope ours is good. We once had a coffee table book of Ireland. I cannot tell you how many people that came to our home picked it up and started looking through it, so much so that I had to put it on a shelf so that it wouldn’t get worn. I still believe that books intrigue people and I am so glad of that. I know I have told you all this before, but it is worth saying again. When my grandmother passed away and left me her cookbook, I sat one evening looking at all the recipes she had made and

While researching recipes for my articles, I sometimes go to the library to search for very old books, as recipes have evolved over the years. How your family made a certain loved recipe can possibly be made easier these days with the same end result. While I am certainly a fan of modern technology — I love my iPad, my computer and my phone — I’m still not sure about devices such as the Kindle. I love the feel and the smell of old books! I love the library. I love the feeling you get when you’re surrounded by all the good works of published authors. To pick up a book and turn the pages quietly, put-
