consider besides what’s on the menu. Does your pet enjoy company? Some pets can become stressed when strangers are in their home and may be more comfortable staying in a bedroom. This can especially be true for pets that are not used to children who may be coming over to visit. Consider the safety of your pet and your company when deciding whether they should be allowed to mingle. You also may want to keep your pet in a separate room or crate until after all your company has arrived to prevent someone accidentally letting your pet out the front door. It’s also probably wisest to tell your guests not to share with your pet. A little morsel from everyone could add up for a large mess for you to clean up later if your pet gets an upset stomach. Home and Away with Dana Wolfe Deer season is risky business for those on the road Right now is the perfect season for deer. It is good eating in the corn fields as most of our local farmers have picked the remaining corn that has been left. When we are traveling, it has always been my job to be the lookout for deer jumping from one field to another, sometimes missing us on the roadway by inches. But, the other morning Mark, my husband, didn’t fare so well without my keen eyesight and car deer hunting expertise. While traveling route 66 at 6 in the morning with fog and a misty rain falling — in his two-weekold sports coup that he has hunted for for two years)

— BAM … it happened! Yup, he hit a deer straight on. It smashed in the front of the car, and the hood flew up over the windshield so he couldn’t see. He pulled the car to the berm, set his emergency flashes, called 9-1-1 and sat and counted 24 cars flying by. Nobody stopped to see if he was alive, hurt or dead. Finally, a truck pulled up beside his car and without hesitation the man said, “Hey, can I have that deer?” Mark said, “Yes by all means. Take it and enjoy! And yes, I’m OK.” Thankfully, he wasn’t hurt, just a little stiff and sore the next day, but it could have been a lot worse. It concerns me a little that we are so involved with our own everyday lives, or maybe even a little scared to stop and help a stranger in need. I keep thinking what if that
would have been me? I would have been having a total meltdown due to the fact I had hit a sweet deer. In my mind, I would have wanted the state patrol to pull that sweet animal to the side of the road so I could explain how sorry I was that I had hit him, put a blanket over him and say a few prayers for him. “That is why I’m glad it was me that hit the deer,” Mark said. So, while the season is still young, let’s all be reminded how dangerous it can be. Drive a little slower when you are in an area where there may be more deer that usual. If you see a car that you know has been in a accident and there is nobody around, just call and report it, as the person in need may be hurt and cannot do that for themselves. As for me and my deer hunting season, Mark will get another car, and again
I will continue to be on the lookout, but now with a little more vigilance. Happy cooking … and hunting. Write to me at dwolfe@tdnpublishing.com.
