Gazebos add to summer pleasures Do you dream of a peaceful gazebo for your backyard? An attractive little pavilion where you can relax, hide from the sun’s mid-day heat, or dine with friends, al fresco? Whether you imagine it to be circular, square, or hexagonal, nothing is stopping you from creating the gazebo you’d love to have. Just head out to your closest book store or renovation centre for some plans, and get out your saws and hammers! A gazebo is relatively easy to build, as there are no walls involved, and straightforward plans and gazebo kits are readily available in stores. If you decide to go for a personalized design, your biggest challenge will be in cutting the framework to size. However you approach this project, you should always check municipal building regulations before getting down to work. Once you

have obtained a construction permit, prepare the ground with a layer of limestone gravel compacted with a roller. There are many architectural styles to choose from, ranging from simple to extremely complicated. Four, six, or eight sides, closed or open: it all depends on what you will use it for. To guide you in your choice of style, remember that a gazebo can be enjoyed as much by the children as by their parents. You might want to make it big enough to include a play area, a place for family meals, or a relaxing corner for reading. Think about adding trellises or mosquito screens on the sides, as well as double doors or an up-and-over opening to ensure that your gazebo is as user-friendly as possible. Landscaping around the gazebo is also an important element of this project. Once it is covered in vegetation, the gazebo will blend beautifully into your backyard.

Renovations inspired by spring Because our mood is often influenced by the season, it’s common to get the sudden urge to redecorate when the colours of spring start to emerge after the winter. Beautifying our surroundings is akin to carrying nature’s awakening into our decor, to the renewal of life, especially as it centres around the pleasure of entertaining and living comfortably in our homes. This year’s design trends are influenced by four key factors: cute, raw, refined, and a mix of these. All these influences are inspired by the 1950s, meaning they are a combination of kitsch and contemporary. The cute element is This year’s decorating trends are inspired by the 1950s and found in carefully designed small objects, combine lively colours with natural materials. the raw in natural materials such as various types of wood
and natural fabrics, and the refined is represented in the care brought to elegant decors and in the choice of accessories. Once again this year, the colours of walls, accessories, and floor coverings create a lively atmosphere, springing from all these latest trends. Our decor becomes a tonic to draw us away from the winter blues. Among this year’s colours, candy pink and lemon yellow are definitely at the top of the list, along with turquoise blue, apple green, and all the acid tones. Neutral shades inspired by nature keep their role as a base colour to contrast with brighter shades. They are available in warm, cold, or metallic tones.

Francis Furniture specializes in all types of quality home furnishing, and a large selection of pictures, mirrors, lamps, table top accessories and area rugs, among others. "One of our most recent companies that we started carrying is a company that manufacturers dining and bedroom furniture right here in Ohio. They allow you to customize every aspect of the purchasing experience; from choosing the type of wood down to the hardware that completes the piece. TROY — Since 1935, the Francis Furniture family has been in the retail furniture business. It all started with the first location in downtown Sidney, where the family specialized in selling furniture and appliances. The business has since grown to encompass five locations: Celina, Greenville, Sidney, Troy and Van Wert, with Troy opening in 2001 and Van Wert as recently as 2005. Troy Store Manager Adam Romer said employees at the five stores are very proud to be part of a family owned company that has been around for 78 years — even weathering the toughest of economic times. "It is no surprise that the business climate has been a little rocky over the past few years. It makes me very proud to say that I work for a company that has such a strong history, and with the support of our customers we have been able to remain a strong presence in each of our respective communities," he said. In the business's 78 years, Romer said the company goal has always been the same: customer satisfaction. "We want to give our customers the best quality furniture and bedding at the lowest possible prices, and the finest service that the Francis Furniture customer expects," he said. Even with the present economy, Romer said the business continues to give full attention to the wants and needs of its customers.

Planning the layout of your yard Have you just bought a new house and the landscaping needs to be done from scratch? The first thing to do in this situation is to make a list of exactly what you want. On the other hand, if you want to redesign an existing yard, the first step is to identify the plants you wish to keep. Don’t limit yourself by letting existing elements dictate the style of your new yard. Rather, integrate these elements into your design by incorporating them into an efficient network of garden paths. Many heads are always better than one, so ask your family what they would like to see in their new yard. You probably won’t be able to include all their ideas, but identifying priorities will ensure that nothing important is forgotten and unnecessary expenses will be avoided. For example, if you are planning to put a flowerbed in one particular spot, be sure that it isn’t where you’ll want to install a pool a few years from now. Moving all those plants later on will be a lot of hard work! Other projects might include leaving space for hanging out the laundry (forward-thinking for a green backyard), a pond, garden, rockery, or herb garden, as well as a corner for relaxing and entertaining. When the time comes to start work, keep in mind your priorities. The space you have at your disposal as well as your budget may limit what you can include. Secondary needs can be fitted into any remaining space or left for another time and another budget. If you feel that designing and implementing such a project is too complex for you, or if you feel overwhelmed by all the work, you could always contact a professional landscape gardener. This kind of specialist can give you lots of good advice and can draw up a harmonious and well thought out plan to meet all your needs.

Recreate old-world charm with a screened-in porch One of my best childhood memories is of visiting my grandmother. She had a wonderful summer kitchen, where it was always cool and breezy. It was comfy and peaceful, protected from direct sunshine and bad weather. The screen door creaked and closed with a bang, its tightly coiled spring a sound of pure country. When I close my eyes, I can still hear that door, and the murmur of adults chatting on the porch, making the most of summer evenings. Summer kitchens seem a thing of the past, but home renovators can recreate the unique feel of an old-fashioned veranda with a screened-in porch. In addition to enhancing the value of your home, partially enclosing a porch will prolong its life many-fold. An enclosed porch gives
the impression of being outside while being protected from rain, wind, and mosquitoes. It’s a patio transformed into an extra room in the home, with the additional advantage of comfort and dryness. In other words, it captures summer at its best! This can be a very af-
fordable project, as screens are a lot less expensive than the large windows required for three- and four-season porches. Do-it-yourselfers can build their own porches, with some guidance from a building materials or renovators store. For a few dollars, you can even obtain
plans for this type of construction. With just a little bit of effort, and a springed screen door, summer living at your home can be just like it was in the good old days! An enclosed porch gives the impression of being outside while being protected from rain, wind, and mosquitoes.

Just like clothing styles, new decorating trends surge forth every year, allowing us to keep our homes beautiful and modern for little cost. Use colour to your full advantage this winter and fill your home with shades from the 2012 palette, featuring the energizing effects of sunlight. Who said winter had to be grey? Wall colours are important in determining the energy levels of our homes; they reflect our moods, good or bad, especially when the days are so much shorter. That is why creative experts in design, architecture, and fashion encourage new trends. These days, their choices are most often all about passionate colours and vibrant surroundings. The ten colours in the spotlight this year are bamboo, bright red, honeysuckle pink, deep purple, cedar green, green-blue of the ocean depths, dark chestnut, nougat, orange, and pale grey. If it’s difficult to be daring, be aware that tones of white are making a huge comeback as a backdrop. That means you can bring your home up to date with accents. If you cover your walls with timeless shades, you can infuse new life into your decor by pairing them with green or fuchsia — a contemporary approach with an urban influence. Inversely, you could always opt for one of the ten 2012 fashion colours on just one wall of a room. Choose a wall where there is a fireplace, a beautiful piece of furniture, or a work of art in order to highlight the feature.
