How to live a longer, healthier life Provided by Dorothy Love Retirement Community According to recent research, today’s older Americans are outliving their ancestors by decades. At the start of this century, life expectancy in the United States was only about 45 years. Back then, eight of the top ten causes of death were infectious diseases, ailments that for the most part have long since been conquered by modern medicine. In addition to combating illnesses, medical researchers have also made enormous strides in learning more about how and why we age, and what we can do to stay healthy, as we grow older. For years it was generally accepted that getting older automatically meant a decline in physical and mental health. Scientist now believe, however, that aging and loss of health do not have to go hand-in-hand. The latest studies show that the factors we used to think most influenced our health actually play a much lesser role in determining our wellness. For example, medical evidence now indicates that heredity accounts for only about 20 percent of our general health. Our environment- the quality of the air we breathe and the toxins we’re exposed to- account for another 20 percent with the quality of our medical care responsible for about 10 percent. So what factors influence the remaining 50 percent of our health? Well- and this may surprise you- experts say they are factors that are very much under our own control, things like how well we eat, the level of exercise we get, and how we look at life and the quality of our relationships and others. In fact, it’s becoming clear that our relationships play a major role in keeping us healthy. A 20-year study in Berkely, California, by the state’s Human Population Laboratory found that people who are socially isolated had a much higher risk of illness and death that those with friends and family. Research has also proven the importance of physical exercise as we age. A study at the Jewish Home and Hospital for Aged demonstrated that exercise benefits even the frail elderly. The study said exercise increases oxygen uptake, improves muscle strength and bond density, is good for the heart, and enhances a
sense of well-being. A popular saying says, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” But an energizing, sweat-producing workout can have anything but small benefits. In fact, the benefits of exercise are large indeed, no matter what your age. While teens put in laps around the football field and college kids bench press at the gym, baby-boomers and senior citizens are discovering that fitness programs designed especially for them aren’t risky, but healthy. At places like the YMCA, the Senior Center of Sidney-Shelby County, and here in the Amos Community Center at Dorothy Love Retirement Community, people are taking advantage of walking tracks, exercise equipment and fitness classes. As a result, they fell better and have more energy. Walking is perhaps the best kept fitness secret. It’s easy for most of us to do and it’s proven to bring healthy results. A recent study concluded that adults who walked four miles per day at a brisk pace (about one hour) lost an average of 15 pounds in a year- without dieting at all. What makes a walk a workout? It’s largely a matter of pace and distance. When you’re walking for exercise, you don’t saunter, stroll or shuffle, instead, you move out at a steady clip that is brisk enough to make your heart beat faster and cause you to breath more deeply. Swimming, bicycling, and dancing are other types of aerobic exercise, which aids in increasing blood flow, strengthening the heart and lungs, and preventing osteoporosis. Other benefits include improved balance, coordination and an increased energy level. A good fitness program will include strength training along with aerobic workouts. Strength training is usually performed on exercise equipment, like the machines made by Nautilus. A fitness expert should help you design your Nautilus program to gradually increase the workout as you build muscle. The benefits are numerous including stronger muscles, which in turn can bring stronger bones, thus reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures, improvement in blood cholesterol levels and the control of blood pressure (continued on page 9)

The Sidney-Shelby County YMCA Encourages You to Know Your Risks for Prediabetes and Diabetes As one of the nation’s leading nonprofits dedicated to strengthening community through healthy living, the Sidney-Shelby county family YMCA is urging residents to be aware of their risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes and preventative steps they can take today to reduce that risk. Currently, nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes and one in three (79 million) people have prediabetes, a condition where blood glucose is elevated, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. The nation’s struggle with obesity and type 2 diabetes is no surprise, but the amount of people with prediabetes is a growing issue that can

be prevented or delayed with lifestyle changes such as healthy eating and physical activity. People with prediabetes are at risk for not only developing type 2 diabetes, but cardiovascular diseases, stroke and other conditions. “Lifestyle changes can help prevent developing type 2 diabetes but the key is to recognize the risk and determine what needs to be done” said Sam Casalano, Associate Executive Director. “You don’t have to make the changes alone – the Sidney YMCA can help through diet and nutrition counseling, exercise classes and programs, and specific diabetes education classes. Residents of the community are encouraged to visit the Sidney YMCA to learn more about education and prevention offerings. Individuals can learn how background and lifestyle choices help determine the ultimate risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Several factors that could put a person at risk for type 2 diabetes include family history, age, and weight and activity level, among others. Some basic lifestyle changes that contribute to weight loss and healthy living can decrease the risk for type 2 diabetes. Among these are: • eat fruits and vegetables every day; • choose fish, lean meats, and poultry without skin; • aim for whole grains with every meal; • be moderately active at least 30 minutes per day five days a week; • choose water to drink instead of beverages with added sugar; and • speak to your doctor about your diabetes risk factors, especially if you have a family history of the disease or are overweight. To learn more about the Sidney YMCA’s diabetes and healthy living programs please contact Sam Casalano at 937-492-9134 or scasalano@sidney-ymca.org.

Alzheimer’s Checklist and what needs to be done with them. ____Misplacing Things Anyone can misplace their wallet or keys, but eventually find them by reconstructing where they could have left them.A person with Alzheimer’s disease may put things in inappropriate places: an iron in the freezer, or a wristwatch in the sugar bowl. ____Changes In Mood Or Behavior Everyone has a bad day once in a while, or may become sad or moody from time to time. Someone with Alzheimer’s disease can exhibit rapid mood swings for no apparent reason: e.g., from calm to tears to anger to calm in a few moments. ____Changes In Personality People’s personalities ordinarily change somewhat at different ages, as character traits strengthen or mellow. But a person with Alzheimer’s disease can change drastically, becoming extremely confused, irritable, suspicious or fearful. ____Loss Of Initiative It’s normal to tire of housework, business activities or social obligations, but most people regain their initiative. The person with Alzheimer’s disease may become passive and require cues and prompting to get them involved in activities.

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative disease of the brain. Its causes are unknown, and there currently is no cure. To help you know what warning signs to look for the Alzheimer’s Association has developed a checklist of common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease (some of these symptoms also may apply to other dementing illnesses). Review the following list and make a check mark next to symptoms that seem to be a matter of concern to you. If, when you’ve completed the list, you have made several check marks, you should make an appointment with a physician for a complete examination of the individual with the symptoms. ____Recent Memory Loss Affects Job Skills It’s normal to occasionally forget assignments, colleagues’ names or a business associate’s telephone number, and remember them later. Those with a dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, may forget things more often, and not remember them later. They repeatedly may ask the same question, not remembering the answer. ____Difficulty Performing Familiar Tasks Busy people can be so distracted from time to time that they may leave the carrots on the stove and only remember to serve them at the end of the meal. People with Alzheimer’s disease could prepare a meal and not only forget to serve it, but also forget they made it. ____Problems With Language Everyone has trouble finding the right word sometimes, but can finish the sentence with another appropriate word.A person with Alzheimer’s disease may forget simple words, or substitute inappropriate words, making their sentence incomprehensible. ____Disorientation Of Time and Place It’s normal to forget the day of the week or your destination for a moment. But people with Alzheimer’s disease can become lost on their own street or in a familiar shopping mall, not knowing where they are, how they got there or how to get back home. ____Poor or Decreased Judgment People can become so immersed in an activity or telephone conversation they temporarily forget the child they’re watching.A person with Alzheimer’s disease could forget entirely the child under their care and leave the house to visit a neighbor. They may dress inappropriately, wearing several shirts or blouses. ____Problems With Abstract Thinking People who normally balance their checkbooks may be momentarily disconcerted when the task is more complicated than usual, but will eventually figure out the solution. Someone with Alzheimer’s disease could forget completely what the numbers are

and blood sugar; correction of muscle weakness, imbalances and joint instability; reduced stiffness associated with arthritis and lower back pain; weight control. Gentle exercise is good for you, too. Tai Chi, for instance, is a slow-moving form of exercise developed by Chinese medial men centuries ago. It’s a great stress reliever and has been known for developing balance and coordination, concentration and muscle tone. Tai Chi also has a positive effect on high blood pressure, arthritis headaches, hormonal balance and insomnia. It improves the immune system and the functioning of the respiratory and circulatory systems, as well as strengthening the skeletal system. The best advice for people growing older is to remain as active as possible. The old rule “use it or lose it” is really true, especially where the heart, arteries, muscles and the brain are concerned. We at Dorothy Love Retirement Community have long been aware of the impact of lifestyle habits and attitudes on health. In addition to

As welcome a season as spring often is, for some it’s a time to run and hide indoors. Thanks to allergies, many people find spring to be a time of sneezes, coughs and medicines. Below is a list of some of the more common allergies, their possible causes and some of the common effects. Hay Fever Cause: Pollen, be it from trees, grass, flowers or weeds. Effect: Stuffy, runny nose, which typically brings on bouts of sneezing. Hay fever also affects the eyes, causing watery, itchy eyes that sufferers feel they need to rub or scratch. Nasal itch is also common. Asthma Cause: Asthma attacks are not exclusive to allergy season, but they can be triggered by a change in seasons, pollen count, cigarette smoke, dust mites, furry animals, viral infections or even stress. Effect: Asthma effects a person’s breathing, so coughing, wheezing or tightness in the chest are all indicators of asthma.

Sneak exercise into activities Many people equate "exercise" with doing a workout video or heading to the gym. This doesn't have to be the case at all. Regular daily activities provide a lot of the exercise a person needs and can be tweaked to provide even more. • Move while watching TV or playing video games: There are several video games today that make physical activity part of the fun. Even if your gaming system doesn't feature getting up and being active, do so on your own. While watching a television show, dance, walk in place, do jumping jacks, or any other activity during commercials. • Go outdoors: Instead of recreational activities inside of the house where space is limited, play games, go on walks, or organize a pick-up sports game in the neighborhood. You'll burn calories, get exercise, and enjoy fresh air, too. • Leave the car at home: Whenever possible, bike, walk, rollerblade, or get to your destination another way. Suburban life tends to create the car-to-store-to-car-to-house pat-
tern, which doesn't make for much physical activity. • Keep moving: If you simply must sit, such as in school or at the office, tap or kick your legs. A little movement is better than none at all. • Park further away: When in store parking lots, park furthest from the entrance so you're forced to walk a bit more to and from the car. • Take a walking tour: Sightseeing during a vacation? Many big cities are perfect for strolling. With so much to see, you won't even realize how much walking you're doing.

your family physician is unavailable, after hours or on the weekends. KEY SERVICES Cardiac CareWilson Memorial offers patients access to elite level cardiac services without having to travel far from home. The hospital partners with physician groups to the north and south to offer services and programs to help with effective diagnosis and treatment of cardiac related conditions. Patients who choose Wilson Memorial Hospital for cardiac services will find advanced technology delivered by skilled professionals. From the initial testing stages to cardiac catheterization procedures, the team of doctors, nurses and technicians are there to care for you. Wilson's Cardiac Rehabilitation program helps patients return to their daily activities and acts as a support staff to help patients manage the changes that accompany a healthier lifestyle. In 2012, Wilson Memorial opened a low risk, diagnostic Cardiovascular Cath Lab. In the past, the hospital offered standard cardiac diagnostic services such as electrocardiograms, stress tests and echocardiograms, but did not perform cardiac catheterization and interventional procedures. With an aging population and heart disease on the rise, the need to elevate Wilson Memorial to a higher level of service came at an appropriate time and allows patients to access additional cardiac services locally. The Coumadin Clinic at Wilson Memorial offers medication management, specifically managing and monitoring Coumadin upon physician referral. The primary goal is to provide patients ongoing monitoring of their anticoagulation therapy. Women’s HealthFrom gynecologic and obstetric (pregnancy) care to menopause and osteoporosis (bone health), Wilson Memorial is caring for women through every stage of life. Offering the highest quality of comprehensive medical care, the team of doctors and
clinicians offer compassionate care to meet the needs of women in our communities. Unique to a hospital of Wilson Memorial’s size, The Francis Women’s Center offers a private and relaxed environment in which women can receive digital mammography, bone density testing, ultrasound, and stereotactic breast biopsies. The Copeland-Emerson Family Birth Center is another upscale facility not often found in a community hospital setting. Averaging close to 900 deliveries a year, the center features 10 birthing suites, four recovery rooms and three observation rooms, all equipped to make families feel very much at home during their stay. Sweet Beginnings Boutique, located at the birth center, serves as a community resource where breastfeeding mothers can seek advice, receive assistance and shop for supplies. Wilson Memorial offers a variety of orthopedic procedures and services. Leading the way is a team of highly skilled surgeons that are board-certified and fellowshiptrained in key specialty areas including: general orthopedics, hand surgery, sports medicine, foot and ankle care, and pain management. Shelby County takes great pride in their local athletic programs, so it is a natural connection to have a high-level sports medicine program in place through the hospital. Wilson Memorial Sports Medicine is the official provider for seven Shelby County high schools: Sidney; Lehman Catholic; Fort Loramie; Anna; Houston; Fairlawn; Sidney Christian Academy; Jackson Center; and Botkins. Full-time, certified athletic trainers work with each of the school’s athletic programs to provide onsite services for the student athletes. iting illness or injury. Hospice care involves a team approach including physicians, nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, therapists and trained volunteers to provide expert medical care, pain management, symptom control, and emotional and spiritual support. Hospice care is expressly personalized and tailored to each patient’s needs and wishes. Wilson Home Health Care is a nationally recognized program designed to provide comprehensive healthcare to patients in their own home on a temporary basis. The care is provided under the direction of a physician, and the goal is to help patients regain their independence after an illness, injury or hospitalization. The Wilson Sleep Center is another innovative area where the hospital is using the latest technology to determine sleep disorders and help patients receive treatment.
The center is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Occupational Health Services works closely with over 400 businesses throughout the area to provide customized healthcare solutions. Services include wellness programs, hearing testing, injury treatment, drug and alcohol testing, and pre-employment medical exams. Occupational Health Services can improve profitability by increasing employee productivity, preventing and treating workplace injuries and illnesses, and reducing absenteeism. The Diabetes Wellness Center is dedicated to helping patients and families manage diabetes through education and support group activities. Wilson Memorial is the only community hospital in the west central Ohio area that is recognized by the American Diabetes Association for outstanding diabetes education and service.
Simple ways to alter eating habits When it comes to physical health, many people are aware that making exercise a part of the daily routine is a good means to getting healthier. However, exercise is only one part of the process. Combining exercise with a healthy diet is the best way to achieve optimal physical health. But a healthy diet doesn't have to mean a full dietary overhaul. Rather, there are ways to alter dietary habits without having to sacrifice favorite foods. • Pan-fry or saute foods with a nonstick spray or low-calorie butter substitute. Bake or broil instead of frying. • Replace sugar with substitutes when sweetening foods and beverages. • Order from the light menus now offered at many restaurants, or purchase lowcalorie or reduced-fat products at the grocery store. • Try a meal plan using "exchange lists" based on foods grouped together according to similar food values. Most exchange lists include several "free" foods: those lower than 20 calories per serving, such as many low-calorie, sugar-free foods and beverages. • Never skip meals. Eat three to six times a day in smaller portions to keep from getting hungry. • Practice patience when eating. You don't have to be full at the end of every meal. In fact, eating slowly can help you better determine when it's time to leave the table without feeling stuffed. • Weigh yourself regularly, but don't put too much stock in the scale, particularly if you're feeling better.

Caffeine more prevalent than you think Caffeine is something many people want to avoid for one reason or another. Whether it's for health reasons, such as avoidance during pregnancy, or simply because you do not want to be kept awake at night, knowing the sources of caffeine is helpful. While most know that a can of cola or a cup of Joe contains caffeine, there are other foods and beverages where caffeine content could be a mystery. • Decaffeinated does not mean caffeinefree. Decaf products contain considerably less caffeine than their full-strength counterparts. However, there are still detectable levels of caffeine present. Most brands of decaffeinated coffee, for example, have anywhere from 8 to 14 mg of caffeine per serving (regular coffee has 85 mg on average). For individuals sensitive to caffeine, even this small amount might result in some adverse effects. • Watch your sodas. It's safe to assume that colas will contain caffeine, but clear sodas are okay, right? Actually some other sodas have more caffeine than Coke(R) or Pepsi(R). Mountain Dew(R), for example, has more caffeine per serving than other popular colas. Some orange sodas and root beers even have caffeine added. • Read the label. The nutrition label of foods and beverages must list whether caffeine is "added" to a product. However, if it is naturally occurring, caffeine may not be listed. • Don't forget the chocolate. Chocolate foods and beverages can have varying levels of caffeine. White chocolate will not, but milk chocolate and dark chocolate in particular can contain high amounts. • Avoid coffee flavoring. If you're planning on digging into a coffee-flavored ice cream or yogurt, chances are there is caffeine present as well.
HEALTH & AWARENESS FAIR 2013
• Be aware of herbs and other caffeine sources. Caffeine can be present in things other than chocolate and coffee beans. Kola nuts, yerba mate, and guarana are all sources of the stimulant. Drinks or foods that contain these ingredients will give you a caffeine rush. • Avoid energy drinks/weight-loss aides. The ingredient providing the "boost" in many of these products is caffeine. • Medications may be caffeinated. Some over-the-counter headache remedies and cold products contain caffeine. Read the labels of any medication to learn if caffeine is present. • Green tea. Many people equate green tea to herbal tea. However, although it has less caffeine than black tea and much less than coffee, it still contains caffeine. The same can be said for iced tea products.

City of Sidney Parks and Recreation Department Where else would you want you or your children to be but in a park participating in one of the recreation programs and enjoying the natural settings there, or at the municipal pool enjoying the sun? Any one of these options allows everyone involved to get out and get exercise, and socialize with friends and family. Recreation programming will again be provided or the youth of Sidney. Through donations of time or funding from several individuals, groups, or businesses in Sidney, children are able to enjoy several clinics and programs. Stories in the Park, Tennis, Arts and Crafts, and the Fishing Derby are a few of the events that youth of various ages can enjoy. Brochures will be distributed to all elementary schools in Sidney, detailing all of the many programs and how to register for them. The Ohio Department of Education funds the summer lunch program this year at six locations in Sidney. The program is administered by park staff and provides food at the following sites: Brown Park, Green Tree Park, Humphrey Park, Berger Park, Sherman Park, and the Alpha Community Center. Meals will be available at these locations for the youth, Monday through Friday, from June 3 to August 18, 2013. The Sidney municipal Pool opens this year on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. This
facility has over 600,000 gallons of crystal clear water, a 30 foot high speed slide, and the 295 foot long spiral slide. Other amenities that are enjoyed by pool patrons are the water features that shower, or drop water to cool you off on one of the many dog day afternoons we have here in Sidney. Free swim lessons return this year due to a generous donation from local orthodontist, Dr. Alvetro. Save $5.00 off each season pass you purchase during the early bird ticket sales beginning May 1, 2013. asses can be purchased at the Revenue Collections office, located in City Hall, 201 W. Of course, the marquee park for the city is the 226-acre Tawawa Park. Guide to to Guide Healthy Eating Healthy
Eating To help young people develop healthy attitudes about food and eating, parents and their children should become more educated about the foods you eat and behaviors centered around eating. Here are some tips to help your family develop healthier eating habits: 1.
Plan healthy meals. Your child should eat three well-balanced meals of average size each day. Serve fewer fatty foods. It is best to prepare foods that are baked, broiled or steamed, rather than fried. In addition to a small serving of lean meat, provide large servings of vegetables.
2. Check serving size. Always refer to the nutrition label on prepared meals and snacks for the serving size. A serving of potato chips might be listed as having 200 calories, but you may be surprised to learn that the serving size is only 10 chips. Eating the whole bag might mean consuming more than 1,000 calories! 3. Stick to single servings. Avoid serving seconds of the main course or dessert. Recommend eating more salad or vegetables if your child is still hungry. 4. Serve healthy desserts. Fresh fruit instead of ice cream, cookies or cake makes for a healthier and lower-calorie dessert option. 5. Plan for smart grocery shopping. Buy lowcalorie and low-fat meals, snacks and desserts, as well as low-fat or skim milk and diet soft drinks. To limit the amount of high-calorie desserts or snacks in your house, avoid buying them in the first place. 6. Eat at the table. Start a family tradition of eating meals together in the kitchen or dining room whenever possible. Eating on the run or while watching TV leads to unhealthy eating habits.
7.
KIDS Limit fast-food meals. Even though they are convenient for the busy parent, you should limit how often you allow your children to eat fast food, as it is usually high in fat and calories.
8. Read food labels. Routinely check the nutrition label of the foods that your family is eating to better understand serving size, calories and the nutrients provided by different foods. 9. Eat foods low in calories and low in fat. Remember to be careful of many low-fat or “diet foods, as they can still be high in calories even though they are low in fat. 10. Have regular meals. Your child should eat three well-balanced meals of average size each day, plus two nutritious snacks. Discourage skipping of meals, especially breakfast. 11. Limit snacks. Two snacks a day, preferably of low-calorie foods such as raw fruits or vegetables, is recommended. Avoid high-calorie or high-fat foods such as chips and cookies. 12. Consider drinking habits. You should encourage your child to drink four to six glasses of water each day, especially before meals. Water has no calories and it will help you to feel full. Other healthy drink options include diet sodas and lowfat milk. Limit or avoid regular soft drinks, as they contain 150 to 170 calories per serving. 13. Don’t completely outlaw any foods. Allow your child to have special foods or desserts on special occasions. 14. Avoid strict diets. Fasting and fad diets rarely work and will discourage your child from continuing. Adult diet programs, such as the Atkins diet, have not been proven safe or effective dieting tools for children.
