Christian Academy ceremony Friday Christian Academy Schools will hold its graduation ceremony Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ralph J. Stolle Gymnasium. Graduates of the Class of 2012 are Jonathan Aukerman, Katie Clason, Benjamin Huffman, Ashley Inman, Lauren Jenkins, Veronica Murphy, Holly Spencer and David Wilcox. The class gift is a new podium for auditorium. The class flower is the cactus and the class colors are purple and gold. The class motto is, “Life
Jenkins
Spencer
is a journey, not to a destination but for a transformation.” The class song is “Blink” by Revive and the class verse is, “He must become greater; I must become less.” (John 3:30)
The graduation speaker is Jason Rising, who is the founder, and president of First Fruits Evangelistic Association and serves as an evangelist. He has traveled extensively during the past 15 years to speak at retreats, services, mission trips and evangelistic outreaches. Gifted with unique ability to train today’s leaders, Rising is passionate about equipping people through workshops, coaching, and training resources that
he has developed that bring about momentum and change to any organization, school officials said. A veteran youth pastor, missions evangelist and founder of Holy Hands Expedition, Rising’s ability to combine rock-solid biblical content with a fresh perspective has helped him to engage people nationwide, officials said. The testimony of his life touches many. His personal struggles with ADD, dyslexia and ADHA have allowed him
to connect with thousands of parents and students who have experienced the same. The valedictorian is Lauren Jenkins, daughter of Don and Heidi Southam, of Sidney. The salutatorian is Holly Spencer, daughter of John and Sonya Spencer, of Sidney. The class mission trip was an outreach to Baltimore. As a class, the students decided to make their class trip to innercity Baltimore where they worked in an inner-
city ministry for children and the homeless. The Class of 2012 learned an important life lesson in understanding what it is like for other students to grow up with so little opportunity, school officials said. The trip taught the class so much about itself and its mission to become “a new generation of Christ-centered leaders.” Students understand that to be a leader is to serve others just as Christ said: “I did not come to be served, but rather, to serve.”

Lady Antebellum entertains students in tornado-hit town LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Grammy Award-winning country music trio Lady Antebellum performed a “miniprom” for students of a southern Indiana town that was devastated by a tornado in early March. Henryville Junior-Senior High School students won an online contest to bring in the top-selling act, which also is playing a full benefit concert later Wednesday at the KFC Yum Center in nearby Louisville, Ky. At a prom-style party in Louisville’s downtown arena overlooking the Ohio River, the band surprised the students by playing for them in a private show. Teens in casual clothes cheered and screamed under a disco ball hung over the dance floor. “Each and every one of you have inspired us, and we’re so honored to be here, I know it’s your sec-
ond prom technically,” said singer Hillary Scott. The band couldn’t play at the high school’s actual prom last month because of a scheduling conflict. Scott and another band member, Charles Kelley, selected two students to dance with during the short acoustic show. Henryville junior
Kelsey Guernsey said she couldn’t believe how close she was to the band. Her home, like many of the students’ houses, was damaged in the March 2 tornado that destroyed the school. She said private concert with the band was a high point of an otherwise tragic year. “It seemed kind of unbelievable because Hen-
ryville is so small and we really don’t ever get anything really big like this,” she said. Ty Griffin, a senior who filmed a video entry for Lady Antebellum’s prom contest, said he was surprised by the private appearance. “When they came out I was ecstatic,” said Griffin. “I saw everybody crowd
around the stage so I just ran up there.” Schools as far away as northern Wisconsin submitted YouTube videos on behalf of Henryville, an unincorporated town hit by two tornadoes — one packing 175 mph winds — on a day when storms killed 13 people in Indiana and 24 in Kentucky. Scott, who came up
with the idea for the band to play at a prom, toured Henryville earlier Wednesday. “It was heartbreaking in a lot of ways,” she said at a news conference before the show. “Where there’s so much sadness and devastation there’s hope being built in its place, so that was really inspiring to see.”

SHS students win blood-drive contest Sidney and Springfield High Schools are far apart and in different divisions of the Greater Western Ohio Conference, so they don’t often meet in athletic competition. But the competition on May 11 had students battling for blood-drive bragging rights without having to leave campus. Springfield usually challenges schools a little closer to home, but this year it threw down the gauntlet to distant GWOC member Sidney. Both schools had drives planned for May 11, so they agreed to compete for a trophy by seeing who could register the most donors. Springfield has the larger enrollment, but Sidney went into blood drive day with the lead in earlier registrations. This marked the third Community Blood Center drive of the year at Sidney, many students will wear the red cord at graduation, and several underclassmen have already qualified for the red cord by donating three times in their high school career. “More students got involved when they intro-

She was a little nerv-
ous waiting for her turn to donate, and said, “I’m as excited as you can be about losing blood! But I like getting that phone call that says my blood was used to help someone.” Olivia Seving is just a sophomore but serves as student chairwoman of the drive. “I’m a good organizer, I like to be in charge,” she said. She’s a varsity cheerleader who wants to someday be a lawyer. When asked what she considers to be the trickiest part of organizing a blood drive, she said, “Getting everyone together, all the people — the volunteers — actually working. The donor part is easy.” Meanwhile, over at Springfield High School, the challenge competition tide was turning in Sidney’s favor. “We had 106 on the schedule,” said CBC representative Judy Blankenship, “but we lost some to a school field trip and deferrals.” That mean Sidney claimed the challenge victory with an unofficial total of 114 registered donors to 86 for Springfield. “All in all, it was a good
day,” Blankenship said. “This was their fourth drive of the year and they will do five next year. Students will wear the red cord at graduation and the school will receive the Red Cord Honor School certificate. Principal Chris Shaffer is glad that we are able to be here, and is very supportive. He believes it s a good cause for the community and good opportunity for community service for the students.” The drive at Sidney High School was also destined to be a success, no matter how the challenge turned out. CBC representative Kathy Pleiman was proud to present student government volunteers with the certificate recognizing SHS as a Red Cord Honor School for hosting three blood drives this school year. “That’s what I like about this,” Pleiman said, gesturing around the gym bustling with full donor beds and a feast of pizza and cookies at the Donor Café. “The kids have a good, healthy experience in a comfortable environment. It makes them much more likely to want to be donors for life.”

Fairlawn receives technology grant Fairlawn Local School was recently announced the recipient of a $10,000 Mobile Assistive Technologies grant awarded by eTech Ohio. Funding was awarded to 20 schools through a competitive application process open to all Ohio public school districts. The grant will fund the implementation of mobile assistive technologies (tablets, e-readers, smart phones, Braille notes, togo licensing of software, etc.) in grades 3-8 reading, language arts and math classes at Fairlawn Local School. The grant was developed to expand and enhance learning opportunities for special needs learners through the use of mobile assistive technology. “E-Tech Ohio is pleased to support these special needs educators in their efforts to integrate assistive technologies into classroom practices,” said Greg Davidson, interim executive director of e-Tech Ohio. “On behalf of the Commission and staff, we are all eager to witness the transformative learning and communication that will take place through these projects.” Fairlawn Local School will implement mobile assistive technologies including iPads, Proloquo2Go, and National Reader, with supplemental professional development initiatives. Fairlawn’s strategy is to implement “ACCESS Through iPads” by aligning the learning goals of students grades 3-8 with special needs and increase student independence in accessing the general education curriculum through the iPad 3 and the programs downloaded onto it. Materials developed as a result of this project will be for training and enrichment purposes. Participants will create final reports that will be available at www.etech.ohio.gov once completed.

Former Lehman students return to help

when we were in high school and we hope we are good role models now.” The Limelighters met every Tuesday evening in the fall, but less often in the winter and spring. Things for Galbreath and Hewitt did not slow down, however, as they were also asked to help choreograph the annual school musical, “Crazy for You.” After seeing their work with the Limelighters, Musical Director Libby Van Treese approached them, and they didn’t hesitate. Both were directed by Van Treese in several musicals while at Lehman. Hewitt’s favorite scene-stealing role was the comic character “LeFou” in Lehman’s 2006 production of “Beauty and the Beast.” Galbreath played the female lead
of “Belle” in the same production. Hewitt is a 2010 graduate of Franciscan University of Steubenville where he majored in English literature. He is living in Piqua and is currently working in the Americorps Program, which is the domestic version of the Peace Corps. The program aims at helping vulnerable area youth learn jobreadiness skills and entrepreneurialism. In addition to being involved in show choir and musicals at Lehman, Hewitt was in Music Warehouse, a summer youth music theater program in Piqua for 13 years. For three of those years, he served as a choreography captain. He is the son of Rick and Becky Hewitt, of Piqua. Galbreath travels an hour to Lehman re-
hearsals from Ohio Northern University where she is a pharmacy major. Galbreath was in show choir, color guard and musicals at Lehman, and participated in Music Warehouse for 11 years. She also spent three summers as a choreography captain. This is not her first time working with her alma mater. For two years, she helped create and teach guard routines at Lehman’s summer band camp. She is the daughter of Dave and Julia Galbreath, of Piqua. Galbreath still has two years to go for her pharmacy degree, a sixyear program at Ohio Northern. As for Hewitt, his future plans are uncertain, but he will be getting back on the stage to act in a Shakespearian play this summer.

Lehman Catholic High School has been fortunate this year to have two former students again walking the familiar halls. Chad Hewitt, class of 2006, and Elizabeth “Libby” Galbreath, class of 2008, have spent much of their time this year helping with the school’s music activities. Vocal Music Director Jacquelyn Jenkinson, herself a 2004 Lehman graduate, called upon Hewitt and Galbreath to choreograph this year’s Lehman Limelighters Show Choir. “At first, they were just going to create the dances and teach them to student dance captains who would then teach the group,” Jenkinson said. “That would have been less of a time commitment, but once they got started, they really wanted to be at the rehearsals with everyone.” “I like working with the kids and getting to know them, putting faces with the names,” Galbreath said. “It’s great to see how Lehman has evolved since I graduated. Fortunately, the values I learned at home and were reinforced by the school remain at the
