Three downtown retail businesses closed during the year: Handbags and Etc., Scoty’s Pawn and From the Heart. “The major impacts downtown were the closing of the Ohio Building, which forced businesses

to relocate both within downtown and outside of the downtown district, and the demolition of the Taylor Building, Smelewski said. “The Taylor Building demo disrupted traffic for about two weeks, in turn affecting business to the surrounding establishments. On the west side of town, East of Chicago Pizza closed, but closings were in the minority of commercial activity. Subway and Little Caesar’s opened in new buildings. Taco Bell, Bob Evans and Arby’s completed extensive remodeling projects. Another restaurant, though, continues to put any build-

ing plans it might have for Sidney on hold. Frisch’s purchased land on the far west edge of town two years ago, but according to Karen Maier, vice president of marketing for the chain, whose offices are in Cincinnati, the property is too far out of town for the corporation to consider putting a Big Boy restaurant here. “Sometimes you buy things as an investment, she told the Sidney Daily News in January. “Sometimes the town grows to you. If Sidney starts to grow, will we build? We’ll look at it at that time, she said. Curves relocated to

Rising gas prices impact economy Elevated prices for unleaded gasoline and diesel fuel heavily impacted an already unstable local economy in 2011 as industries, government operations, trucking companies and schools struggled to budget. City Schools spent $5,208 for gasoline and $124,036 for diesel fuel during the 2010-11 school year, compared to $3,788 and $93,841 in 2009-10, an increase of about $30,000. Diesel buses averaged 5.93 miles to a gallon last year and other vehicles 7.97 mpg. The marketplace forces of supply and demand determine the price of fuel. If demand grows or if a disruption in supply occurs, there will be upward pressure on prices. By the same token, if demand falls or there is an oversupply of product there will be downward pressure on prices. These principles apply at the service station as well. If a retailer prices his gasoline too high without regard to competition, customers take their business to the station with a lower price. Government regulations toward cleaner burning gasoline also figure in the price picture. Eighteen separate formulas of gasoline are mandated for different regions. Natural disasters and market disruptions also affect the price of oil and gasoline. The price of crude oil may account for up to half the price of a gallon of gasoline. Taxes on fuel also figure in the equation. Nationally, gasoline price trackers tell us the typical American household spent $4.155

In the past, high gas prices in the nation have gone handin-hand with economic good times, making them less damaging to family finances. Now, prices are high despite slow economic growth and weakening demand. In 1981 when oil prices were high due to Middle East turmoil, gas consumed 5.7 percent of a family’s budget according to the oil Price Information Service. Monnier expects growth to continue

The year 2011 saw continuing improvement in the l o c a l economy encompassing the manu f a c t u ri n g , construction and s e r v i c e Thompson areas. “There is still an amount of skepticism among clients concerning the direction of the economy. As businesses become more comfortable with the direction of the economy we expect growth to occur on a continued moderate and steady pace,” said Dan Thompson, president and managing partner of Monnier & Co.

Mike & Kim Eilerman

In the auditing and accounting area partner Larry Elsner notes that 12 accounting standards updates were issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board in 2011 on a variety of issues. The issuance of new standards continues to make financial statements more user friendly for both accounting and business professionals alike. “Assisting both business and individual clients in taking advantage of tax regulations can significantly improve the cash flow and personal wealth of our clients,” said partner John Boeckman. Finally partner Tom Burns said that assisting clients evaluating their current business position

and developing longrange business plans will help clients be in a better position to adjust to future changes in the economy and to take advantage of future business opportunities as they become available leading to long-term growth of the clients business. Thompson’s report continues: Significant tax opportunities exist for taxpayers for 2011 and continuing into 2012 even though no significant tax legislation was passed in 2011. One of the most significant opportunities that exist through 2012 is in the estate and gift tax area where the estate and lifetime exclusion will be $5.12 million. This provi-

sion is scheduled to expire at the end of 2012 and we encourage taxpayers to take advantage of this opportunity while it exists. Businesses will see a reduction in the self-employment tax rate on their 2011 returns along with being able to claim 100 percent bonus depreciation for assets place in service during 2011. The Tax Relief Act of 2010 extended various individual tax provisions which clients will be able to take advantage of on their 2011 returns including the $1,000 per child tax credit, the American opportunity tax credit, certain nonbusiness energy property credits and continued reduced capital gain tax rates.

To keep abreast of new tax legislation and changes in accounting regulations Monnier & Co. professionals and staff attend numerous continuing professional education courses throughout the year. These courses along with upgrades in technology assist the professionals and staff at Monnier & Co. in providing quality service to our clients. Monnier & Co. welcomed Travis Skyock to the firm in 2011. He is a 2011 graduate of Wright State with a dual major in accounting and finance. He will be assisting other professionals at Monnier & Co. and clients in the tax, consulting and financial reporting areas. A full service account-

ing firm Monnier & Co. offers traditional accounting services including auditing, employee benefit plan auditing, tax planning and preparation, and financial reporting. In addition the firm also provides financial consulting, estate planning, merger and acquisition consulting, new business startup and business financing services. We also assist clients in selecting, implementing and maintaining computerized accounting systems. We invite you to consult with any of the Monnier & Co. professionals to assist you with these or any other accounting and tax issues which you may have.

1157 designconcepts transforms business

The year 2011 was no different for 1157 designconcepts , of S i d n e y, t h a n m o s t o t h e r companies facing the difficult economic Flock environment noted Evelyn Flock, president and CEO. Her report follows: 1157 designconcepts is the donor recognition vendor of choice for more than 2,500 major colleges, leading medical centers and hospitals, museums and other notfor-profit organizations throughout the United States and Canada. With its roots in the community tracing back for over half a century, the company designs and builds donor walls for capital campaigns and giving programs, as well as hall of fame displays, history walls, interactive kiosks and a broad range of recognition plaques. Sales were flat for 2011 compared to 2010, however, we set out to begin transforming the

business to access new opportunities and take advantage of an expected uptick in charitable giving. Some of the large projects completed and shipped in 2011 were Rutgers University, Rush Copley Medical Center, in Chicago, McNeese State University, The Jewish Community Foundation of MetroWest New Jersey and the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Although charitable giving has slowed during the economic decline, there is considerable activity on the part of institutions to enhance the relationship with their constituents, donors and friends. Social media is certainly playing a role in relationship building, however, 1157 designconcepts is poised to leverage its strength in design to create recognition experiences which are permanent and support the mission and the brand of the institution. To that end, the company continues to gain acceptance of its interactive product offering. The company implemented a number of operational improvements

during the year for the purpose of enhancing design and client service. The rollout of these initiatives is expected to support and drive significant sales growth. In 2012, 1157 designconcepts plans to pursue a growth strategy on multiple fronts, including expansion of representation, enhancements to facilitate organic growth through product development and the establishment of alliances with other manufacturers and marketing channels. As always, the focus will remain to provide cutting edge solutions for its customers Although the company is entering only its fifth year as an independent provider of recognition systems, 1157 designconcepts has assembled a dedicated team of proficient craftsman, intuitive designers, knowledgeable account managers and responsive client service and support representatives.

As the landscape of the economy and marketplace continually evolve, we have positioned ourselves with the ability to offer many complimentary services to our clients,” said Kevin M. SMS proTECH continues growth and adds strong security solutions

One of the hottest topics in technology today is BYOD or Bring Your Own Device. It’s becoming a factor in nearly every business today. “Your employees, vendors and guests probably bring some type of personal communication device or notebook into your workplace every day,” said President Jeff Boate, of SMS proTECH of Sidney. “Employees may be using their personal devices, such as

iPADs, to connect to your network even if it’s just to retrieve email.” His report continues: Typically companies provide their employees laptops and smartphones to serve as their mobile communications. The business owns those devices and can control the security of those devices and any data the user downloads to them. Today, the burden of security is falling on the IT Department as employ-

ees bring their own smartphones, tablets and notebooks to the office or use them to connect remotely to do their work. And, we can’t forget about USB sticks or jump drives. As technology continues to evolve, that’s where SMS proTECH can help; you allow your employees to be more productive and we’ll help you plan and manage the security. SMS proTECH also supports the mission of

public safety and security organizations. Our newly organized security solution, Digital COPS, will provide the tools and assistance to bring the highest degree of Law Enforcement and Public Safety services to its citizens. We are fortunate to add highly trained, technically saavy, law enforcement officials to our employee roster. This allows us to provide a level of security that is un-

matched by any other IT organization, locally or nationally. Digital COPS system offers the latest in cutting-edge mobile surveillance technology. With continual advancements in 3G/4G, WiFi and GPS technologies, mobile video tracking surveillance is able to monitor, manage and respond in real-time. These new staff members will continue to maintain their badge accreditations through

training and certification. Isaac Dunifon holds one of only two ACE (AccessData Certified Examiner) certifications in Ohio and is utilized for computer forensics by many state agencies. We’re really excited to move forward with this new venture, not just for SMS but for the degree of security solutions that we’ll be able to provide to the entire Miami Valley. Schwieterman family tradition continues

Cy Schwieterman Inc. started as a family business in 1946 with Cy and his father Ed. CSI still proudly values the advantages of being able to hold the business in family hands. CSI was started in St. Henry, which is now managed by Jerry, Joyce, and Brad. In the 1980’s two more branches were opened near New Knoxville and Arcanum. Dave heads up the New Knoxville branch with help from his son Brent. Dave’s other son Doug helps out where needed between New Knoxville and Arcanum, the office that Mike heads up. “We currently employ 32 personnel spread out between the three branches,” said Brent Schwieterman. “Right at a third of these employ-

ees has been employed with CSI for 10 years or more. This has proven to be essential for us to help ensure your quality of work.” His report continues: CSI’s main line of work is in agriculture. We are specialized in subsurface farm drainage, which is the process of removing excess water from farm fields by lowering the water table to an average of two to three feet below the surface. This provides better working conditions following any rain. Lowering the water table also makes the crops root down deeper in the spring, which provides a healthier and stronger plant. All these benefits return back to the farmer with higher yields, which

puts more money back into the farmer’s name. Drainage goes over and beyond paying for itself in the long run. CSI provides many other services on agricultural and residential end. We also construct and reconstruct everything from open ditches, grass waterways, manure storage lagoons, and building pads. We also do land clearing on woods and fence rows along with building demolitions. For residential properties we take care of building drains, septic systems, ponds, and yard grading. All is done as efficiently and practical as possible to help the customer. Technology has been a big factor for CSI over the years. Staying on top of the market has

helped keep the company on the right path. GPS mapping of all the tiles installed since 1998 has made recording all of our installs much easier. This allows us to relocate the lines in the future. GPS ability has advanced to complete control of the machines used to install the tile. The satellites are capable of achieving a vertical accuracy within a half inch. We can also pinpoint locations of tile down to inches horizontally versus our old GPS system, which could be off 2 to 5 feet. Keeping the company alive and moving for-

ward has helped CSI stay progressive. Since 1990 our footage of pipe installed per year has steadily increased 45 percent. Footage from 2011 pretty well remained the same as 2010. Weather greatly affects our ability to work in the fields. With the wet fall that we had, there were many days that we could not work, if we had prime conditions we would have been looking at a record year. Even with our footage remaining the same in the last two years we still saw a 16 percent increase in

sales. This has been cause partly by an increased cost in material and an increase in excavation work. With business seeming to still be in a steady incline, we can’t help but to attribute it to our great customer base and the employees that help us out day to day. We still are looking forward to meeting new customers and a continued relationship with past customers. Give any of the three branches a call anytime if you are looking for pricing, or just more information. We look forward to talking with you.

Gagel Plumbing and Heating celebrates 47th anniversary

MINSTER — In the 47 years since its doors first opened, Gagel Plumbing and Heating, Inc., located midway between New Bremen and Minster at 4574 State Route 66 North, has developed a reputation for quality throughout Auglaize, Mercer and Shelby Counties. Founded in 1963 by Bill Gagel, and now owned by his son, Don, Gagel Plumbing and Heating offers complete plumbing and heating services, including both repair of existing equipment and installation of new residential and commercial systems. On the leading edge of the plumbing and heating industry, Gagel Plumbing and Heating features computerized heating and air conditioning projection and comparison on both new and existing homes. This service allows the homeowner to accurately predict future heating and air conditioning bills, and to make the best decision as to what system

to install in the new or remodeled building. “We can show a customer what his future costs will be with various types of fuels,” Gagel said. “With the recent increases in most fossil fuels many customers are interested in reducing their heating bills. This year, a 30 percent tax credit is still available on all geothermal systems. There has never been a better time to replace the old, inefficient gas or oil system.” His report continues: Using computer analysis, Gagel can compare different types of furnaces and cooling units based on the energy source utilized, the heat value of the fuel, and the specific climate affecting West Central Ohio home and building owners. Special emphasis is placed on geothermal systems, which produce either warm air or hot water to heat your home most economically. In the past thirty years, Gagel Plumbing and

Francis Furniture listens to customers walks in the doors at either of the five locations — Sidney, Troy, Greenville, Celina and Van Wert. “We’re bringing style and fashion back to an industry that is about commodity goods,” said Rob Klosterman, manager of the Sidney store. “Most people go from store to store and all the stores look the same. We want to be the store that looks different.”

Klosterman’s report continues: Everything in the Sidney store has been selected with the local customers in mind. Every piece of furniture in the store is hand picked to represent what we think fits the needs of our customers in Shelby County. Not sure what to pick out to decorate your home? Just ask. My goal is to listen to

the customers in the store and find out what their home furnishing needs are. The staff is trained to ask about shoppers’ needs for function and advice on colors and styles to fit their homes. We try to ask questions to evoke you to think about what you want. Ultimately the customer makes the final decision because they have to live with it, but we’re here to

offer our experience. Because it has multiple locations, Francis Furniture can buy items in bulk that provide the best values in the industry. We’re big enough with five stores to buy at the lowest prices, and we’re small enough to be in touch with our customers. That’s what makes Francis Furniture successful. But it’s the overall

There were 88,400 acres of soybeans harvested with a yield of 51.1 bushels per acre. Total production of 4,515,000 ranked the county 21st in the state. Farmers harvested 16,400 acres of wheat with a yield of 54.3 bushels per acre. The total production of 891,000 bushes ranked the county 18th in the state. There were 3,350 acres of alfalfa hay harvested in 2010. The total production was 14,100 tons, which was ranked 30th in the state. Milk and swine receipts, he said, were much improved from the previous year while

cattle prices were rated as very good. Feed costs however were also significantly higher for the livestock sector. The Ohio Department of Agriculture reports there are 26,500 cattle and calves in the county on Jan. 1, 2011. This ranks the county ninth in the state of Ohio. There are 6,700 milk cows on Jan. 1, 2011, which ranks 10th in the state. On Dec. 1, 2009, there are 82,000 hogs and pigs in the county, which ranks fifth in the state. There are 1,500 sheep on Jan. 1, 2011, in the county, for a 25th ranking in the state. There are 1,050 farms in the county. The average farm size is 207 acres. Total land in the farms is 217,000 acres. The Ohio Department of Agriculture reports the following 2009 cash receipts from mar-

The year 2011 was another roller coaster year for Shelby County farmers. It was almost a repeat of weather conditions experienced in 2010. “A wetter than normal spring was not conducive to the early planting of corn and soybeans,” said Roger Lentz, executive director of the Shelby County Farm Service Agency. “Much of this acreage was planted in May and early June rather than the optimum months of April and early May.” After dealing with the spring snows and rains, farmers experienced hot weather and not much precipitation during the growing season. “A hot-dry period was then encountered during the July-August grain fill stage,” said Lentz. “The fall harvest season commenced later

FSA provides guidance throughout the year

The U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency ( F S A ) serves producers in Shelby County and administers Fe d e r a l programs, Lentz aut ho rized by Congress, for grain, livestock and soil, water and air conservation. The local Agency, located at 820 Fair Road, maintains records on some 2,000 farms, more than 7,500 tracts of land and corresponds with about 1,450 farm owners and/or operators. Shelby County FSA Executive Director Roger Lentz has submitted the following report: A cropland retirement or Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) continues to enroll eligible land into authorized practices. Nearly 6,000 acres has been approved by the County Committee for 10 to 15 year period. Of this total, some 500 acres have been accepted in the “Quail Habitat” or Field Border practice. Most noteworthy is the 1,200 plus acres maintatined as grass filter strips along open ditches. A little less than 400 acres have been enrolled as CRP grass waterways. Weather was a major variable during this past growing season. A wetter than normal spring was not conducive to the early

planting of corn and soybeans. Much of this acreage was planted in May and early June rather than the optimum months of April and early May. A hot-dry period was then encountered during the July-August grain fill stage. The fall harvest season commenced later than normal with extended periods of rain. Meteorologists indicate 2011 was the second wettest on record. The yield of soft red winter wheat ranged from 60 to 80 bushels per acre. Oats is a minimal crop with usually less than 1,000 acres planted in the County and a major portion of this acreage is used for forage purposes. Hay and forage tonnage was about average for the season. Soybean yield ranged from 45 to 65 bushels per acre while corn averaged in the 140 to 160 bushel range. Milk and swine receipts were much improved from the previous year while cattle prices were rated as very good. Feed costs however were also significantly higher for the livestock sector. The commodity prices and U.S. farm income have been at record levels within recent years. Farmland values also continue to increase. The resiliency and overall financial health of the ag industry is rated as very good. For our younger generations, opportunities abound for a career in agriculture and the agribiosciences. The industry has phenomenal po-

tential to accommodate the needs of an ever-growing world population, that is estimated to increase from 7 billion to 9 billion by 2050 (200,000 more people each day). The development of new technologies, food safety and processing, farm management, renewable sources of energy; as well as addressing environmental and stewardship challenges all hold great promise for our “young minds”. Agriculture continues its time honored tradition as Shelby County and our great nations’ largest and most vital industry. A high concern of our producers is not only ensuring food safety and a top-quality affordable product, but to relate to the consumer the source of our food production and what actually transpires on the farm, the processor and the grocery outlet. As generations become more removed from the land, it is imperative that educational efforts be accelerated to convey the true and accurate insight to our food, feed, fiber and fuel production. Agriculture is both an honorable and vital profession; a true economic pillar of our great land! As a producer, we know our most basic industry is ever changing, ever challenging and we look forward to year 2012 with hope and promise. The Shelby County Farm Service Agency is again committed to serving agricultures people with prompt, efficient and courteous service throughout the New Year!

Financial institutions see Minster Bank has recovery from long recession successful year

Local financial institutions were happy to see some recovery in 2011 after weathering the long recession. “The year went pretty well,” reported William R. Wente, president of First National Bank, which has branches in New Bremen, Botkins, Sidney, Wapakoneta and New Knoxville. “There’s been a lot more movement in the last few months, and some homes are actually selling.” Wente’s observation seemed to extend across the local financial scene, with most other area banks reporting increases in deposits and loans for 2011.

Minster Bank reported an increase in total assets to an all-time high by the end of 2011, along with an increase in total deposits, which translated to a reinvestment in the community in the form of consumer and business loans, according to President and CEO Mark Henschen. Michael N. Monnier, president of Osgood State Bank also reported growth in total assets and deposits, while noting, “The banking industry continued to have many challenges.” Much of the growth can be credited to low mortgage interest rates, which

have revitalized the mortgage market. “With the rates being as low as they are, it really stimulated the refinancing business,” Wente said. “There have been a lot of new purchases, although construction is still relatively slow.” U.S. Bank reported growth in home and auto loans as well, with continued growth in deposits, as was the trend the previous year. Banking institutions also continued to focus on technology and improvements in services. Some examples include a new drive-thru ATM location for Mutual Federal Sav-

ings Bank in Sidney, which previously offered only walk-up ATMs in town; new checking and credit card offerings from PNC, complying with customer demand; and mobile banking applications for iPhone, Blackberry and Android smartphones for U.S. Bank. First National is now offering email statements, as well as offering online banking and bill pay, and mobile banking. Minster Bank also reported the opening of a new loan production office in Vandalia, and PNC in Sidney reported a renovation of the West Michigan Street location in Sidney.

“Thanks to the support of our customers and the hard work and caring service of our emp l o y e e s, Minster Bank enjoyed ano t h e r successful Henschen year in 2011,” said Mark Henschen, president and CEO. “Total assets increased to an all time high of $327 million. Total deposits increased to $280 million for the year. These deposits were utilized in the communi-

ties we serve in the form of consumer and business loans, which grew to over $187 million in balances.” His report continues: In 2011 we expanded our footprint into Montgomery County by opening a loan production office in Vandalia at 6450 Poe Ave in the Sand Lake Plaza building. Joel Bopp has been hired as a Senior Commercial Loan Officer for Minster Bank and will lead the bank’s efforts to grow its commercial presence in the northern Montgomery County market. Bank has stable growth in 2011

Your Link to the Community

The banking industry continued to have many challenges as the local, state, and national economies had to deal with declining values in business and residential assets. Osgood State Bank continued to experience stable growth during 2011. Total assets at year end were $130,477,000, an increase of 2.33 percent. Total deposits increased to a record balance of $111,257,000, an increase of 1.01 percent. This growth was accomplished by the bank’s increased residential mortgage activity due to record low mortgage interest rates that started in 2010 and continued in 2011. The deposit growth continued because of the confidence and loyalty that our local communities have in the stability and conservative nature of community

banks especially now when economic times are challenging. Osgood State Bank expects more challenges to come in 2012 as unemployment and economic growth are still uncertain and public confidence continues to be low concerning national economic growth. The regulatory demands in the banking industry will continue to change because of the implementation of new restrictions that limit the ability of banks to increase lending activity and profits that meet previous growth levels of four and five years ago. As a result of implementation of the bank’s strategic plan, the bank was able to achieve a record net profit of $1,510,704 in 2011. The continuation of high residential mortgage activity and decrease of deposit rates were major factors in achiev-

PNC Bank enters new year with strong momentum to serve its customers, community

PNC Financial Services Group Inc. remains committed to helping customers achieve their financial goals and communities grow and prosper. “We enter 2012 with strong momentum from last year — a year of growth, innovation and giving back,” said Thomas Paul, PNC Sidney branch manager. “Despite an uncertain economy, PNC continued to grow, invest and expand in its business, regions and customers. As a result, we delivered strong financial performance and are one of the most well capitalized and liquid banks in the country.” His report continues: PNC took steps to expand its presence in the Southeastern United States. PNC expects to close on the acquisition of the U.S. operations of the Royal Bank of

Canada in March 2012. Through that acquisition and two others, PNC will operate more than 440 branches in North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia and South Carolina, providing further convenience to all PNC customers. Whether in its new or existing markets, PNC continues to be among the most engaged corporate citizens through a combination of philanthropy, economic development and employee volunteerism. We continue to strongly support early childhood education through our signature philanthropic initiative, PNC Grow Up Great, a $350 million, multi-year initiative that began in 2004 to help prepare children from birth to age 5 for success in school and life.

Locally, PNC is working with non-profit organizations such as ReadySetSoar and the Muse Machine to provide the leadership, advocacy, funding, tools, and volunteers to help educate parents, caregivers, and communities on how to prepare young children for success in school and life. To date, The PNC Foundation has provided more than $420,000 in grants to support early childhood education in the Dayton region. For customers, 2011

was a year of additional product choice and innovation that created compelling new reasons for expanding their relationship with the bank. Guided by input from thousands of customers and other consumers, PNC designed its new checking and credit card offerings to make banking easy and rewarding, offer assistance to manage their money and use credit wisely. The popular PNC Virtual Wallet online and mobile money man-

agement tool lets customers manage their spending budgets, avoid mistakes and fees, and integrate PNC credit cards. Also, PNC introduced a remote deposit feature that lets customers easily deposit checks into their account without going to the branch or ATM by using an Apple iOS device as well as a Virtual Wallet application for Android mobile devices. In addition, a new “PNC Finder” app locates branches and ATMs and shows cus-

tomers how to get there. Also this year, PNC Wealth Insight debuted as one of the first tools in the industry to provide a complete, aggregated view of clients’ total net worth. For PNC customers in Shelby County, the coming year is sure to bring exciting new banking features and conveniences delivered by the local team led by myself, Business Banker Christopher George and Financial Adviser Ryan August. U.S. Bank Western Ohio has busy year

“Although starting off slow, with unemployment remaining stubbornly high for our part of the state, the second half of 2 0 1 1 turned Counts out to be extremely busy for us in the lending and deposit business and ended on a successful note for U.S. Bank in Western Ohio,” said Andrew Counts, regional president, U.S. Bank Western Ohio. His report follows: Our company continued to invest in technology throughout the economic downturn, and all of the computers throughout our region went through a SOAR (State of the Art Renovation) upgrade. Customers who use our bank’s mobile banking applications also saw improvements when banking by their iPhone, Android and Blackberry. Many who can’t make it into the

Together, the branch staff has more than 70 years of combined banking experience. In 2011 PNC invested in the renovation of the branch, located at 2221 W. Michigan (next to McDonalds), including an upgraded ATM to allow customers to cash checks and deposit cash for immediate access.

bank to make a deposit are now able to deposit their checks remotely via their phone or computer. Our latest mobile app is now available at any app store, or online at www.usbank.com. Locally, we saw a lift in home equity loans, lines and auto loans as consumers began to spend again. We closed more than $75 million in new consumer loans during 2011. Deposits also continued to grow, as they did in 2010. Our deposit base grew more than $80 million year over year as our customers took advantage of our consumer and business packages. We saw double digit growth in both non-interest bearing and savings accounts and have added many new customers as a result of our Savings Today and Rewards Tomorrow (START) program. To date, we have provided more than 1,200 people in Sidney with a new savings avenue, and paid them over $52,000 in incentives to keep on saving. Small business lend-

ing was also successful for us as we continued to grow in this area and doubled our small business leasing year over year. Commercial and commercial real estate lending activity also picked up as well in the last half of 2011 and we continue to see increased momentum. In 2011, U.S. Bank was awarded the Spirit of America Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a company by the United Way, for our employees commitment to the communities we serve. Our “serving you” model extends beyond banking hours, as many of our employees take ad-

vantage of eight paid hours to roll up their sleeves to assist in the community, donating their time and talents. Our local leaders currently serve on 12 community boards and 36 U.S. Bank employees have contributed more than 400 hours of service to help many organizations, such as the Lima Junior Service League, The ARC of Erie County, Tiffin Salvation Army, Seneca Industrial and Economic Development, Sandusky County United Way, Anna Community Improvement Corp., Community Improvement Corp. of Sidney, Hardin County Council

on Aging, Shelby County Public Defender Commission and the Shelby County Habitat for Humanity. Our Western Ohio Eastern Indiana Employee Development Network has also held some wonderful events in the community, including Recharge Your Batteries, Your Career is Here, a Habitat for Humanity build day, Teach Kids to Save seminars and Veterans Day events. These efforts and performance of our bank in meeting the financial needs of businesses large and small have not gone unnoticed: this past year, Fortune named us No. 1

most admired superregional bank in the United States, and No. 5 in the world for most admired management. Finally, I would like to thank our employees, advisory board members and customers for another outstanding year. Our focus in 2012 will continue to be on providing excellent customer service through our dedicated and highly trained employees. We will also continue to deepen relationships with our customers by providing them with products and services needed to help them achieve their dreams and reach their financial goals.

From Page 29 PNC continues to be committed to the success of our customers and neighbors in Shelby County and we look forward to helping them address the challenges and opportunities 2012 will bring. The PNC Bank Sidney office staff and I can be reached at 4984761.
