North Carolina Traffic Safety Course for Point Reduction and Insurance Reduction? North Carolina residents may take one of two different traffic safety course- a 4-hour course and an 8-hour course. The 4-hour course is specifically for residents of Guilford and Wake counties, while the 8-hour course is for all other North Carolina residents. There are three reasons that someone might have to take a North Carolina Traffic Safety Course. Court DMV Requirement If you accumulate 7 or more points as a result of traffic violations, you may be required to complete a traffic safety course by the DMV. After you accumulate the minimum number of points, you may receive a letter giving you a court date. You will be eligible to complete the driver safety course so long as you have a valid driver’s license, your violation was not alcohol related, and you have not taken a traffic safety course with in the previous five years. After you complete the course, simply submit your proof of completion to your local court or the North Carolina DMV. Point Reduction If you already have received a North Carolina traffic ticket and want to reduce the number of points that will go on your driver record, then you should take a point reduction course. All you have to do is contact your local court and ask if you are eligible. Upon completing the course and sending the proof of completion to the court, you points will be deducted from your driving record. This can help you earn a lower insurance rate and prevent restrictions to your driving privileges. Insurance Reduction You also may complete North Carolina traffic school in order to earn an Insurance Discount. While discounts can be as high as 10%, you should check with your insurance provider to ensure that they offer a discount for completing a Traffic School course and the specific amount of their discount.
