Tower comprises five star hotel accommodation, grade A office and observation levels. The podium component comprises 25,000sqm of luxury retail. In collaboration with Buro Happold engineers, the tower is designed to withstand 8.5 degree earthquakes . The triangle to triangle tapering plan form is designed to give iconic form but is borne out of the necessity to deflect wind loading in this typhoon prone region. The distinctive facade patternation performs two roles; one to provide solar shading, second; expressive of the phoenix concept a strong conceptual basis present Chinese Feng Shui culture.

Innovative retail planning ensures high footfall to highly circulated retail experience that mixes top end restaurants with destination retail and convenience retail in the lower ground floor - connected by sunken courtyards, and driven from resident and office populations. Arranged around a central event space high frontage length and visibility. Grade A office accommodation balances demands of quality, security, luxury and sustainability requirements. Ian Led the design as well as the advanced geometry development, utilizing Rhino and Grasshopper to quickly generate multiple design interactions to ensure the ‘best fit’ solution. Ian used this project as a test bed for a series high performance workplace assessment tools - which have since been rolled out for future projects. This is allowing BM to define a competitive advantage in an increasingly competitive market.

design leader Ideas competition, the first opportunity for Broadway Malyan (BM) Shanghai to experiment with tall buildings, leading this project Ian worked closely with Buro Happold engineers to develop an expedient workflow methodology that would later be established in the Pheonix tower competition. Using Rhino, Grasshopper, Excel and Revit we were able to make quick informed design decisions in an optimized design process using parametric technology. Conceptually BM was able to experiment with the notion of the icon, its prerequisite for sustainable credentials and the Tower’s role in a quickly developing city on the global stage. As such BM were able to give more than was asked: “Our ambition is to not just create a building, but create a truly sustainable icon which adds value to its surroundings, an icon that gives back to the people, an icon that is greater than the sum of its parts”

design leader As part of a large resort masterplan, this concept architecture explores the poetic and sensory aspects of architecture. A spa complex that exploits a natural hot water spring offers up water at varying temperatures which informs the user experience as process: A process of healing. Varying temperatures of 42° - 14° are combined with other heightened sensory experiences; in particular three pools have different qualities that dampen one sense in order to heighten the experience of the other. For instance the flower bath limits light admittance and acoustically deadens - thus increasing the reliance on the users other senses. Other areas of the masterplan called for the design of villas, hotel rooms and suites, for which space planning is used to exploit and enhance the surroundings.

lead designer Early concept and ideas design for a golf club house associated with the main hotel resort complex. The design exploits the wetlands location by ensuring long views are maximized, and framed by the floor and ceiling planes. Simplicity of plan organisation sees working club functions are on the ground floor, lockers changing and so forth, whilst bar and restaurant funtions exploit the upper elevated floor, utilising roof space for terracing. The resultant form is simple in resolution, acting as a backdrop or frame to the surroundings.

Located in one of the prime entrances to the festival hub, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the installation sought to grab people’s attension with an immersive jewel like experience. Commissioned to launch a range of luxury products made from recycled materials the installtion sought to highlight the epoch’s over prduction of waste. Made from over 800 75kg foil lined paper tea sacks that would ordinarily go straight to landfill Ian and Ben transformed the waste into something beautiful giving credence to the old adage: “One mans waste is another mans want.” The project lasted just ten days, following which the folied paper was reused as packing material for the endorsed products distribution.

Location: “Third Bank Island” Purpose: An extreme pleasure resort on an island between Embankment and Waterloo, London. “It isn’t for escaping life, just preventing life from escaping you.” The programme consists of a park landscape with sporting activities, a lido, extensive urban beach and promenade, with a large scale event space for celebrations and concerts. The island formation culminates in the iconic hotel tower, within which users experience gradations of pleasure. Bungee the atrium, chill out on the 24th floor meadow, or surf the 5th. Yet this building subtly subverts its own hedonism with glimpses of the sublime, the unlooked for moments of wonder and delight.

Notions of production and consumption must be realigned. Investment must shift, new capital must be sought. Project to 2070, imports of food dried up forty years ago, our self reliance has nessecitated the development of uber dense enclaves of selfsubsistance, and self sustinace, each enclave provides the optimum population density with the exact ammount of energy and food. How can we ensure our future without subjugating our culture and our quality of life? Enclaves reach critical mass of populous to ensure a rich and vibrant urban life, the convivial city epitomised, experienced through its connected plazas, parks and squares, the roofscape provides for food and energy, whilt serving as a playgrounbd for the time rich live/workers. At what cost? all the desires wants and needs are provided for, resisdence in the enclaves are highly coveted, a new super gated community, played out in full, the ruinous city left behind serves only as a reminder to the failed unsustained urbanism of the 20th century.... An exodus for the 21st century?A grand gesture that enables the provision of food and energy for the new exemplary community within, at its heart; the embodiment of social and environmental capital. R.I.B.A. President’s medals Nominated project. Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre provides a range of services not provided by the NHS, to patients suffering from cancer. The scheme has evolved through a conceptual response to the idea of death and rebirth, and that manifestation in the landscape of the city. Ian devised conceptual methodology involving mapping nodes of change and nodes of non-change, superimpositions, shift of scale and applications of metaphor; this culminates in a formal language for the scheme. Combined with pragmatic responses to the site, environmental concerns and programmatic requirements, the building emerges as an intensity of singular interventions. The concept knows no bounds as the interventions have the potential to spread city wide.

In this case I designed and built a devisive piece which affected the surrounding upon interruption by a user. The intent was to invoke the sense of the sublime. Using electromagnets, sensors, laser and refracting surface passing users would trigger a series of events which would eventually illuminate a room by scattering light rays.
