The project is a provocation and at the same time an homage to the Paleologa Palace: a house located outside Palazzo Ducale of Mantua and demolished in 1899 in order to clear the view to the Castle of San Giorgio. Built by Giulio Romano for Margherita Paleologa, a very respected woman of that era and spose of Federico II Gonzaga, the house represented the scale of the city from the outtown. The project wants to showcase the spirit of the palace taking into account its structural lines and proportions. It doesnÃĸ€™t want to be a reconstruction of the house, but rather a model where visitors could experience its history and retrace the footprints of Margherita. Wooden materials are chosen due to its temporarity as an exhibition space, while concrete is used to keep a permament footprint of the project. The permament element would not only be an integrated part of the designed landscape but also would be a permanent homage to a part of history of Mantua.

The challenge is to incorporate our project with the existing ex-monastery which new function is an on-going project of Carrilho da Graā¸Ŗā¸‡a studio The project area is located at the back of the monastery and the aim is to bring movement and let people explore the place.

blackbox / miradouro

The design concept is very simple: itÃĸ€™s an organic completion of the unfinished monastery. The space is arranged in order to extend the architectural promenade of the place. Alignments and axes are guided and limited by the rigid lines of the monastery and the natural inclination of the territory. Four courtyards are defined and one of these is the blackbox itself having two sides overlooking the adjiacent couryards. The rooftop of the blackbox, which is accessible by public, becomes a sort of miradouro praça (a very typical urban element of Lisbon) providing a panoramic view towards the city and SĂŁo Jorge Castle. Tha residential buldings serve as enclosure of the area and are arranged as a continuation of the unfinished ex-convent. The slow promenade is given by a careful choice and placement of accesses and connections, not only through the green terraces but also between the courtyards and the student houses.

Existing elements are also reintegrated and incorporated as valuable parts of the project: the great entrance of what was supposed to be the church of the monastery is repurposed as an entrance to the inner courtyards and also to one of the residences. Also the chimney of an old pottery industry becomes part of the student housing as a landmark.

The project is focused on the area of Palazzo Te. The palace is located at the South of Mantua, a city which due to its historical value is currently under the protection of the Unesco. Palazzo Te was built as a holiday home for the Gonzaga family in an island surrounded by water and accessible from the city through a bridge. Nowadays the area is completely transformed and the water is no longer present. The main task is to realize a visitor center by trying to commemorate the memory of the island and as part of the project to incorporate the element of water. The area is very extensive and dispersive in relation to the city. Therefore the project wants to define the space which belongs to the palace by enhancing its starting point which is the main entrance. At the same time, we want to keep the current familiarity of the place creating a park and a sport area open to the citizens. Winter 2017/2018

Although the idea was to build a diaphragm between Palazzo Te area and the city, small pockets of accesses were done throughout the ‘wall-building’ to make it more permeable to the public. Moreover the presence of the building is purposely designed as less intrusive as possible, without overpowering the palace, by keeping a lower height and using glass as a finishing material. In order to intrigue the eyes of the viewer through ‘denial and reward’, we played with different opacities of glass showcasing different shades of the presence of vegetation behind and inside the wall-building.

Built in the earlier years of the 20th century, the greenhouse is one of the gems of Villa Baragiola garden. At the beginning of the site inspection it was already possible to perceive the weak conditions of its conservation. Therefore, our first goal is to acknowledge as much as possible its history, structural features, the causes of decay and all the aspects that would help us understand which action is more suitable for this artefact. Survey and research stage of the project are given importance since the greenhouse itself didnÃĸ€™t have any actual documentation or basic drawings to work with.

In the past, the construction of modest greenhouses wasnÃĸ€™t really documented in the manuals but rather handed down from master craftsman to another. However, the construction tecniques used were quietly modern, considering that greenhouses could actually be observed as the first step towards the birth of sustainable architecture. During surveys and site inspection, we detected different kind of degradations caused merely by moisture and vegetation. After the verification of structural problems of the roof, we also became aware of the presence of singular architectural elements made with tecniques that are no longer being used.

Our decision to proceed with a minimal but necessary intervention is based after acknowledging the history of greenhouse. Its importance as element of prestige of the villa; the construction tecniques applied; the presence of handcrafted elements and also after comparing it to the still existing greenhouses of the Como area. The project consists a complete cleaning procedure of the greenhouse from the causes of decay, subtitution of broken elements or filling of missing elements. A structural reinforcement of the glazed roof is also provided with proper verification according to the Eurocode and by using a contemporary but also compatible and reversable solution.

The austrian prison of Busto Arsizio built in the 1855 was designed with a simple and classical T plan. However this building represented a contribuition on the development of the detention facilities thanks to the attention given to the hygiene and the security system which were totally ignored back then. Our idea of design comes from the cosideration that every existing thing carries a trace of time. A deep emotional meaning emerges from the surveys and the analysis of the prison, seen as a place of confinement which tells different stories of men who spent part of their lives in these misery conditions. For this reason the idea of our project is strictly related to the great historical presence of the building.

Geometrical survey and mapping of decay are carried out by dividing the entire building into different areas. Each one assigned to a different group. According to the surveys, the building underwent through some SEZIONE modifications and alterations during the years and despite its state of CC': abandonment, the structure of the building still had potentiality.

Through cracking analysis and comparison of previous yearsÃĸ€™, the building shows a slow structural decay of the construction probably caused by the loss of the rainwater on the main façade which consequently causes a failure of the ground.

This project is characterized by the use of corten steel Sogeco container not only as multifunctional modul but also as bearing structure itself. The challenge is to make the most of the containerÃĸ€™s structure to avoid additions which would mean further construction costs. We realize a minimal house for a family of 4 components bringing great attention to the quality of the spaces and to the specific requirements given: short construction time, building tecniques that would ensure high performances, flexibility and maintanance, environmental sustainability.

The design process is divided into two phases. The first one consists on the plastic control of the volume of a cube and a surface with given dimensions. The function of the two objects are still unknown. The focus is given to the relationship between the two elements and on our specific action on the material. During the second phase, the function of the cube is revealed: considering the dimensions given into 1:100 scale, the cube would represent an artistÃĸ€™s house, and the referring surface its landscape.
