Biography Eric Owen Moss was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Profession: He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1965. Moss continued his education, earning his Masters of Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley, College of Environmental Design in 1968 and a second Masters of Architecture from Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1972. Over the last 30 years Eric Owen Moss Architects has built a wide array of awardwinning buildings, and has helped shape the discourse of architecture internationally. Eric works on an extrovert basis as he takes primary geometry shapes as cubes and cuboids , then starts adding subtracting, rotating or deforming them, then starts editing the interior and solving the plans. Most of his concepts are inspired from the contextual surrounding them.

Introduction Eric Owen Moss thinks that Architecture is not a confirmation of imposed order and control, but a celebration of our perceptions and our sense of play. Architecture is an ongoing dialogue between contrasting forms and the materials whose properties inspire them. Steel bends, wood supports, cement spreads, glass is molten. Their life together is complex, as is ours. Architecture negotiates the existential gaps, and Moss’ work gives us a model of how to do so with grace and exuberance. No irony distances him, from his experience of space and light and texture, color and movement. For this research we are analyzing the deconstructed buildings of Eric Owen Moss according to the principles of deconstruction, depending on the following categories:

He then uses a vertical cutting edge to divide the and fragment the back and the front part of the cuboids as shown in figure (4)& (5).

Building Design 

He started his building by imaging some boxes falling over the building.

When the boxes dropped, they started to have different angles and rotating as shown in figure (2).

He then adds another cuboid under fragmented one, however with a different scale using the scaling method. He the uses the fragmented boxes as a cutting edge that cuts through rescaled box.

He the extrude the external skeleton. He then extrude some parts from the middle portion and let them cut through.

Tilt: The box are tilted in different direction, some to the top, some to the side and some to the bottom. Breaks: the building is broken all the way through, either between the boxes or using the ramps. Rotation: All the boxes are rotated in different direction but same orientation.

conclusion 

The 3D reflects all the previous mention deconstruction principles as Fragmentation, Tilting, breaks rotation of boxes. However as we zoom out we will find that the whole building is anti- pure shapes he broken all the normal cuboids into other fragmented parts and pieces. Also anti structured as the boxes are cutting through the building from the top.

Republic square, Kazakhstan Detailed analysis of Plan, elevation, section and 3D

Background: 

The republic square is located in Kazakhstan which is part of a major project for city wide development. The project is 126,000 square meters and has offices, retail, hotels and residential buildings. At the ground level, there is a 38 meter diameter spiral that connects the old capital of

 http://www.ericowenmoss.com/index.php?/proje cts/project/republic_square/ View 18-05-10

Kazakhstan to the west side of the country. The main function of the spiral is that it acts as a structural element supporting the buildings where the mass of the building is split into the five rings of the spiral. Date 2007.

Geometry: 

The spiral structure is placed at the bottom

A regular box is placed on top of the spiral

The box is divided into five rectangular boxes. Then the spiral cuts through the boxes

The spiral is removed from below the boxes removing any intersections between the spiral and the boxes leaving the building with gaps at the bottom.

Grid As seen from the plan, there are two grids; a normal horizontal grid and another angled grid on top of it.

Angled grid Normal grid

Waved The façade of the building is waved as well as the sides of each building Excavating Not all the building is built on one level, excavation was done in order to place the spiral.

Breaks Between each of the five buildings there are gaps replacing the spaces which were cut out when the spiral was removed.

Bending Bending can be clearly seen in the N-S section to connecting the building to the spiral Waved In the East and West sections, the sides of the building are wavy as they reach the spiral

Section

Anti structure Unlike all buildings, the base of this building is wider than its top making it seem like it should be inverted http://www.ericowenmoss.com/index.php?/proje cts/project/republic_square/ Side view 18-05-10

Conclusion Many of the deconstructive principles can be clearly seen in the Republic Square. When looking at the plan, the principle of grids and waving can be seen however, when looking at the front, side and back views other principles can be seen such as the use of breaks, anti structure and the flying beams. Eric Owen Moss used many principles of deconstructivism which classify his work as deconstructive architecture.

The Umbrella, Los Angeles Background: -The Umbrella is located in Culver City, Los Angeles. - It was first designed as a balcony for outdoor performances. -The Umbrella changed from being a performance area to an office building for an internet company. The original purpose of the Umbrella was for musicians to perform on an outdoor balcony where the audience is accommodated below. -The Umbrella was renovated between 1998 and 2000.

Flying Beams There are beams that are not supported i.e.. Flying beams Exterior shot <http://www.ericowenmoss.com/index.ph p?/projects/project/republic_square/> 18-05-10

Grid The interior plan is made of only one grid while the exterior one is made on a rotating one that rotates around the umbrella Twisting The umbrella shaped part of the building looks twisted

Tilting Parts of the building are tilted from the sides. Bending The whole glass umbrella is bent in ups and downs.

Anti-pure form The umbrella is not designed in a pure form. It is made of irregular shapes Exterior Side view <http://www.ericowenmoss.com/index.ph p?/projects/project/republic_square/> 18-05-10

Conclusion Eric Owen Moss uses deconstructive principles in his project “The Umbrella”. Principles such as tilting, bending, and dislocation can be clearly seen from the exterior shots of the building. One of the most obvious principles that he used was Anti Pure Form where the form of the building is not pure and distinct. All these principles together make the building a deconstructive building that is a land mark to most of Culver City citizens.

Building Design The building was originally a clear rectangular shape, then Moss separated the core of the building and adding the Panoramic Model right in the middle making it the main event. The Model’s main function is to act as a promenade for the public and the building as a whole hosts art displays, music performances, dramatic presentations, as well as unnamed art of all sorts.

Moss started with a box Then, he subtracted the middle portion in a curvilinear matter obtaining a curved skin, which lead to the removal of the centre Bowl excavated Trusses inserted to support the Panoramic Model

Excavating

Not all the building is built on one level, excavation was done in order to place the Panorama.

Finally, the drape was raised off the ground to make a the main event and the ceiling of this entrance. Design model <http://www.ericowenmoss.com/>19/5 /2010

This is an office building with warehouses that were largely unoccupied The warehouses were converted to offices that were appealing and attracted more tenants that were less interested in the tradition conservative type building .

Anti-structure The shapes of the structures are converted not giving the original shape. Anti-pure form Because this is an triangular sharp edges cutting-edge (sharp) tilting

Building Design the existing warehouses were removed and a horizontal wall was placed Trusses were added to tilt and bend the shape of the façade forward

Sharp edges are used. Glass gives the feeling that it is a flying beam
