CE FORWORD
This is a very exciting time for pedigree black and white breeding in Ireland so I consider myself very lucky to be taking the reigns at IHFA at this time. We are moving into an era when sustainability concerns are layered on top of the need to run profitable businesses that suit family life. Now more then ever the focus is on breed improvement, longevity, and efficiency. IHFA and Irish breeders are ready for this challenge.

Huge credit is due to the efforts of Irish breeders in dealing with the challenges of recent years. When we look at the number of Irish bred bulls on the EBI list and see the gains that have been made in cow fertility in recent years we can take our hat off to the efforts of IHFA members. The recent progress leaves us in a good place to deal with future challenges. Having a strong base of fertility and solids means we can continue to make progress in these areas while also addressing other factors which effect longevity. As cows are more fertile they are naturally lasting longer in herds but this challenges the genetics for SCC, health, lameness and udder conformation. I’m confident IHFA members can excel in addressing these challenges.
Better fertility and stabilizing cow numbers, along with sexed semen, mean we will see more surplus beef calves from our herds. The beef calf
buyer is now looking at IHFA herds as a source of quality calves, from good black and white cows and farmers who focus on calf health. We must ensure we deliver a quality product to this market but we are in a great place to do so.
IHFA is well positioned to serve its members by promoting the breed and adding value. We have a great staff. In this issue you will meet our newest members Rachel and Georgia, who are both excellent additions to the great team we have. We will be adding to the list of promotional activities in 2023. With the EHRC conference in April and new initiatives, 2023 will be a very exciting year for IHFA. I look forward to helping our members have a good year and a promising future.
