7.2.2 Superilla Participation IaaC Research
Superilla
The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia in collaboration with the Confederation of Architectural Workshops (CTPA), have taken part to the #Superillapilot project. The #Superilla (Super-block) project claims the occupation of the public space by the people, to subvert the leading role that cars have had over the last 50 years. The project is part of the new Plan of Public Space and Mobility of District of Sant Martí, promoted and approved by the City of Barcelona. The Horizontal Action was born in the framework of the #Superilla project, with the aim of studying new forms of public space occupation. Starting on September 5th, different groups of students will design and produce items from recycled materials, to encourage citizens to exercise their recovered rights in the public space. To carry out the action, students will have the collaboration of the Fab City of Poble Nou network, coordinated by IAAC, which will provide a focus on local production and digital manufacturing and circulate from recycled materials. With the transformation of mobility, the urban transformation of Barcelona takes place. Pedestrians become citizens thanks to the recovery of its four fundamental rights: participation, culture, leisure and exchange. The Horizontal Action will take place in the superblock comprised between carrer Tanger, Badajoz, Pallars and Llacuna, from the 5th to the 22nd of September involving Atta33, Transfolab, Nodo Design and Fab Lab Barcelona workshops among other. Within this event the Active Public Space Barcelona Workshop will also take place, focusing on the principles, implications and applications of ICTs for urban space. More than 70% of the EU’s citizens live in urban areas: cities and urban areas are centres of economic development, services, knowledge and creativity. The public space is the soul of the City, the place where all its features come together. It is an area of overlap and interconnection, the place where the character and the culture of a Society is materialized. If the public space we inhabit today was basically constructed prior or during the Industrial Revolution, the Information Society is now beginning to bring new principles and technologies with which to rethink the functioning and structure of the streets, avenues, squares and parks.

Public space can now be transformed in Active Public Space, fostering people interaction with flows of energy, materials, services and finances to catalyse sustainable economic development, resilience, and high quality of life. Smart Urban Technologies are essentials for the change and consist on a combination of software and hardware that allow real-time data capture, energy generation, storage and reuse, material adaptability, real-time management of time-uses and citizen-space interaction. APS (Active Public Space) is an EU co-founded project with the aim of developing knowledge on Active Public Space.
