OuR ChApteRS IAAE Canada encourages the formation of local chapters at airports and post-secondary institutions. Local chapters enable IAAE Canada members to come together for information sharing and networking purposes. They also provide an avenue for professional development and mentoring at the site level. To date, IAAE Canada has supported chapters at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario and Western University in London, Ontario. If you are interested in learning more about the creation of a local chapter group, contact IAAE Canada Headquarters.
The Toronto Pearson chapter typically meets on a bimonthly basis. Members discuss the latest Association news from across the country as well as events and trends affecting the aviation industry. Each meeting features a special presentation or a site visit led by a fellow member or an invited guest. The intent of the gatherings is to expand members’ knowledge and range of thinking about the aviation industry and general business environment in an atmosphere of collegial discussion and knowledge sharing.
Comprised of students in the Aviation Management programme and affiliated with the Canadian Aviation Students Organization (CASO), the IAAE Canada Student Chapter at Georgian College continues to provide students with avenues to grow their aviation knowledge and network with industry professionals. Professor Wade Hoople serves as the faculty mentor to the Student Chapter and is instrumental in stimulating student interest in IAAE Canada membership and activities. IAAE Canada sponsored the attendance of a student at the Facility Operations & Airport Managers’ Conference in Quebec City in June which provided a valuable opportunity for the student to learn and connect. From time to time, IAAE Canada sponsors a networking evening at the College which affords students the opportunity to learn more about IAAE Canada and to meet Association members. There currently are seven registered IAAE Canada student members at the College.
IAAE Canada has promoted membership to the students enrolled in the Commercial Aviation Programme at Western University. Supported by Professor Joan Finnegan, IAAE Canada has organized information sessions at the University to enable the students to learn more about the Association and the benefits of membership.

Accreditation – Flexibility and Choice In October, the IAAEC Board of Directors passed a series of initiatives that created flexibility on the path to becoming an Accredited Airport Executive or Accredited Airport Professional. Effective January 1st 2017 AAE & AAP candidates have the following options when it comes to completing Stage 2 of the program, which will now be referred to as the Written Requirement: • Management Research Paper - Write a management research paper of 20-30 pages on a topic that is broadly applicable to airport management proposing a set of guidelines to manage a problem or set forth an argument for implementing a project or using a methodology. • Case Study - Prepare a case study of 20-30 pages to recount/analyze the steps or measures taken by a specific airport or airport system in implementing a project or managing a problem. • Presentation – prepare and present a topic at FOAM. The 20-30 minute presentation package must include handouts, outline and PowerPoint slides. • Proctored Essay - Respond to two industry-related questions within a four-hour time limit via an on-lineproctored essay system. • Master's Transcript or Above - Submit an official transcript of record from an accredited university or college to IAAEC to verify that you have earned an advanced degree.

FOAM 2016 An IAAEC first with the Facility Operations & Airport Management conference landing in Quebec City. Working with the staff at Quebec City Jean Lesage International Airport as host airport, FOAM delivered an impressive agenda in la belle province. Highlights included a look at the new Bombardier C-series jet; Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and the issue of Cyber Liability. We also received a very informative session from Transport Safety Board Chair Kathy Fox; and learned more about the challenges of airfield operators from COPA President & CEO Bernard Gervais. The quality agenda was noted by the delegates where 83% found the sessions informative and 84% felt the conference exceeded their expectations. It has set the bar for Calgary in 2017.
5
Fresh thinking Starts here....unconference 2016 Ottawa IAAE-Canada (IAAEC) and The American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) held its bi-annual conference in Ottawa August 23-25. An unconventional format known as ‘Open Space’ meeting technology was used; a first for our industry. The conference began with a leadership panel of airport CEOs that included Tom Ruth YEG CEO and Joyce Carter YHZ CEO, and was moderated by YOW CEO Marc Laroche. This was followed by sessions covering Airport Day of Flight Operations, Aircraft Servicing That Affects Airport Operations, Customer Service and Automation, Baggage Handling, The Airport as a Responsible Neighbor, and Human Resources. But, with the unconference format, delegates themselves, with the aid of a trained facilitator, determined the scope of the breakout discussions for each topic. It was unconventional, and a success, as attendees scored it a 3.7 out of 4 overall; and 3.9 for the quality of the sessions.
6
Maritime Outreach The IAAEC Board agreed that greater effort should be invested in the Atlantic Region of Canada. The first step was to send the Executive Director to the region to speak with airports. In August invitations went out to 12 airports in the region from the IAAEC Executive Director. The invitation asked for a meeting with key airport personnel to discuss three questions: 1. Share IAAEC future plans and get their feedback 2. Identify their training needs 3. Examine ways IAAEC can work with them to meet their training challenges Seven airports responded and meetings were arranged over a 2-week period: October 11-13th and October 17-20th. The responses received fueled a vigorous discussion at the 2016 Board Planning Meeting that in turn, spearheaded a re-examination of training offerings and deliveries for the future.
7
Mid-Year planning Meeting 2016 Annually the IAAEC Board and staff meet to examine the ‘state of the union’ and develop strategies and direction moving forward Fueled by the findings of the Maritime Outreach discussion at the 2016 planning meeting resulted in a serious revue of IAAEC’s approach to training. Following the meeting the Board committed to: • Develop a business plan with special emphasis on small and medium airport needs in the areas of training • Review membership offerings with special attention to adding value to the airport industry experiencing changes to the demographics within it. • Expand the flexibility of training offerings in terms of timing, location and online capacity. Special thanks to RJ Steenstra A.A.E and his staff at Fort McMurray International Airport for their hospitality during the 2-day meeting.
