ROBERT ‘FELLOWES’ CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION 2015 VADODARA

An epitome of grandeur and archetypal style of building architecture in the Indian subcontinent in the 2 nd half of the 19 th century, Robert “Fellowes” Chisholm (1840 -1915) was one of the most versatile and talented architects to work in British and Princely India.

I

n the pre-Independence period of the Subcontinent of India, the professionals of British India endeavoured to define a distinctive style that would establish a fusion of European and English design with Islamic and Hindu/Buddhist/Jain ideas, details and imagery.

Chisholm first came to India employed by the PWD in Bengal and was posted at Calcutta in 1864 as a 24 year old lad. Thereon, he participated and won the design competition for two buildings in Madras- the Presidency College and the University Senate House in 1865.

Coinciding with the arrival of the new Governor Lord Napier, Chisholm soon became the consulting architect to the Government and went on to design some of the most significant buildings in Madras. It was during this phase that he was appointed as the Head of the Madras School of Industrial Art and Design. Chisholm was then an Elected Fellow of RIBAthe Royal Institute of British Architects, with recommendation of Napier and also a Fellow of the Madras University.

In the late 19 th century, Chisholm was commissioned to design the grand palace of the Gaekwad State and Empire which soon turned out to be crucial landmarks for the city of Baroda. It was in this second phase that he established a new design paradigm for the entire subcontinent.

Chisholm was one of the most distinguished Architects practicing in India between 1860 and 1910 who established the true architectural statement of the British Raj in India. Pioneer of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, Chisholm’s finest works survive in two cities in India – Madras (Chennai) and Baroda (Vadodara). An avid painter as well, some of his watercolours are at the RIBA collection while others are displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Over the 40 years of his career in India, Chisholm spoke many times at the RIBA and earned a reputation as an expert on Indian architecture, especially as a dome builder.

Between Intuition and Pragmatism In conversation with IA&B, architect Peter Clegg talks about the core elements of his practice, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, his ideas on architecture, the processes and social responsibilities.

Peter Clegg is a Founding Partner with Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, having established the practice with Richard Feilden in 1978. Widely regarded as a key pioneer in the field of environmental design, he has more than 30 years’ experience in low energy architecture and is actively involved in research, design and education. Peter was the primary author of “Feilden Clegg Bradley: The Environmental Handbook” published in 2007, a substantial account of the practice’s sustainable design experience over the last 30 years and a primer on the implementation of environmental best practice. He is a member of RIBA and a lecturer at several universities in the United Kingdom.

IA&B: The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The Southbank Centre and many other projects desire to involve the social aspects for the larger good of the community, how would you describe the incorporation of these into the design process?

PC: Architecture is an art form but also social science and we have a duty not only to work with our current client base and generate ideas collaboratively, but also think ahead and envisage the needs of future generations who are our ultimate clients. Our most creative work comes from working closely with creative clients who are more prevalent in the creative and cultural industries.

IA&B: Your firm has won many awards including the RIBA Stirling Prize and Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award, how

would you explain your journey, from the establishment of the firm till today; its progression, hurdles and achievements?

PC: We started very small as a community based architectural practice in Bath and we had several lucky breaks, winning international competitions and major projects such as the Realworld recording studio for Peter Gabriel in the 1980s. Our work has always been firmly rooted in the public sector, predominantly schools and universities, but when we won the Stirling Prize in 2008 it was for a private sector housing development where we were able to generate a new paradigm in the design of a community of housing on the outskirts of Cambridge. Our work has always been true to our founding principles which emphasize the social and environmental aspects of architecture whatever sector we operate in.

Alignment The concept of a thriving society is defined by a set of social networks generated amongst people residing in the neighbourhood. Such social interactions spark the idea of a community, where these residents engage in various public activities together.

The Terrace Alive competition by Indian Architect & Builder and Dr Fixit from Pidilite, invited the architecture fraternity to select an urban roof and transform it such that the spilling over to the streets below is channelised in a vertical fashion, in the process creating a program of an induced community space on the terrace. This competition aimed at creating a second realm of public spaces, where the sky was the roof. Lifted off the ground, the terraces of such residential buildings opened a great spectrum of possibilities for innovative and new ideas of a communal and public space.

Exploring the innovation and challenges of water proofing techniques, this venture encouraged architects to design creative projects that would adapt this technology and exploit its functionality. With a number of well-articulated and highly experimental ideas, the entries submitted took the notion of building on an elevated open space to the next level. Addressing the challenges of structure and leakage through the solutions of Dr Fixit, the designs submitted showed a wide range of creative thought processes.

The competition conferred a total of four winners and two special mentions after an extensive screening and a rigorous jury process by Ar Christopher Charles Benninger. The entries were judged on various criterias including being responsive to the needs of expanded public domains, the use of resources, addressing different users at different times of the day and originality of concepts.

Street Graphics

An interesting visual composition by photographer Saumil Shah captures various street graphics from all over the globe.

aumil started his photography practise from the year 2002. His professional career demanded a lot of travel and that became a blessing in disguise as he loves travelling. His interest in photography was like an icing on the cake for his travels.

This body of work by Saumil revolves around the street life and its interaction with the street graphics from various parts of the world. He uses street graphics in a very effective way to create interesting composition. He uses geometry, colour and contrast to create an illusion. He uses these elements to create a pattern and these patterns are juxtaposed with the living beings in his photographs.

In one of his photographs a graphics in the auto almost becomes a co passenger and the scale of the driver and poster creates the illusion. His observation creates interesting forms with the black cat and the purple flowers.

Almost Holi like colour smearing we can see on a lock in Australia, the crumbling walls and the graffiti creates a new pattern and the picture of “che� and the passer by creates an interesting composition in Argentina. The reflections in Venice and shadow in Prague; where ever in street his sense of humour and keen compositional qualities makes the work interesting.

Saumil work reminds us of the street photography traditions of photographers like Henry Cartier Bresson. They look at the pictorial quality of each composition. So each picture is complete in itself. The continuity in pictures series is through the common theme followed and the colour and composition in each photograph. Over all this series makes an interesting visual treat.
