Welcome Dear Delegate I am delighted to welcome you to the 11th IABM Annual International Business Conference here in London. I can remember back in 2012 the headline for this event was “Adapt or Die” and in this same welcome letter back then we challenged the industry to jettison “traditional outdated business models” that “would not prevail in the broadcast and media technology world of the future”. We encouraged new ways of thinking “reinvention” and “innovation” were the key words as we all could see the impact that IT convergence, software defined networks, file based architectures would have on the traditional side of our industry. The changes that have hit our industry in the last three years have facilitated new ways of content delivery for our customers and this in turn is spawning a whole new industry infrastructure and the days when our industry was a niche vertical dominated by specialist businesses operating independently of each other are rapidly disappearing. Looking back, it was clear to see that it was in 2012 when this structural shift took hold and has been gathering pace ever since. To all intents and purposes, in the territories at the vanguard of technological change in broadcast, the transition is complete. We are in a world that looks very different and the IABM membership today includes companies such as Akamai, Brightcove, BT Media and Broadcast, Cisco, Huawei Technologies, IBM, Intel and Microsoft. We also have experienced an influx of members specialising in IP delivery, streaming, mobile technology and other new media products and services. Business models are changing where Capex is often replaced by Opex where income models are totally different and where often only core competencies are maintained in house and the rest outsourced. With the spread of use of cloud services and IP delivery more and more prevalent we are seeing some traditional hardware domains being replaced by software. We are truly moving to a virtual infrastructure in many parts of the digital media value chain. Many of our long standing members have indeed adapted and reinvented themselves creating a new business fit for today’s market. Collaboration is now key and interoperability of members’ product offerings essential, we can no longer operate within silos. The headline theme this year is “Virtual becomes Reality” and certainly three years on we can say unequivocally we have undergone a substantial paradigm shift. Q3 has been tough for many of our members and much of our latest research data indicates a downturn in fortunes across the industry generally in recent months. Some companies however have prospered during this time, so why is this? Is it only traditional broadcast and media technology vendors who have suffered or are the lines drawn differently? We know that many end users have not been sure of the way forward of late and a hiatus in spending has occurred as a result, so how do we get this flowing again? Over the next two days we will set the scene, explore and debate the issues and discuss with our customers the way forward. Our industry is founded upon creativity and innovation and no more so than in the broadcast and media technology vendor base. In collaboration now with new partners we are seeing once again how resilient and adaptable our members can be. I hope that at this conference we can help facilitate and develop new profitable relationships between our members and that you are inspired by what you see and hear, and when the two days are over you leave with new ideas to help your business continue to be a great success. As ever the IABM team is at your disposal during the two days of this conference. Thanks for attending.

Best regards Peter D White Chief Executive Officer, IABM
