ABOUT US

International Intercultural Interdisciplinary

Our Mission

- To promote international exchange

- To facilitate intercultural awareness

- To encourage interdisciplinary discussion

- To generate and share new knowledge

Founded in 2009, The International Academic Forum (IAFOR) is a mission-driven, politically independent, non-partisan, and non-profit organisation dedicated to encouraging interdisciplinary discussion, facilitating intercultural awareness, and promoting international exchange, principally through educational interaction and academic research. Based in Japan, its main administrative office is in Nagoya, and its research centre is in the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP), a graduate school of Osaka University.

Through its international, intercultural, and interdisciplinary conferences, research, and publications, IAFOR is a network hub for interdisciplinary discussion across Asia and beyond, connecting individuals and institutions across the globe, and the thought leaders of today with those of tomorrow.

IAFOR runs research projects and events in Asia, Europe, and North America in partnership with universities, think tanks, and learned societies. IAFOR has also worked on a number of multi-sector cooperative programs and events, including collaborations with the United Nations and the Government of Japan.

OUR EVENTS

Since its inception, IAFOR has welcomed over 50,000 academics to its interdisciplinary conference programmes, held around the world and online.

IAFOR has hosted conferences in Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto (Japan); London and Brighton (United Kingdom), New York, Virginia, Rhode Island, and Hawaii (United States), Chiang Mai (Thailand), Barcelona, Hong Kong, Singapore, Paris, Porto, and Dubai.

IAFOR Research Centre

The IAFOR Research Centre (IRC) is a think tank at the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP), Osaka University, Japan.

Education and capacity building for future leaders and public policy experts are priority at OSIPP, and facilitating cross-border research collaboration and interdisciplinary intellectual discussions are priorities for IAFOR, and the IRC is a place for cross-fertilisation of the two institutions’ objectives.

IAFOR believes in ‘Open Access’ publishing, and since 2009, has been committed to maintaining an online searchable research archive that offers free access to anyone, anywhere, anytime: our repository is open to all, regardless of affiliation or scholarly rank, wherever there is Internet access.

Grants & Scholarships

IAFOR offers travel and accommodation grants and full or partial scholarships covering conference registration fees to PhD students and early career academics who might not otherwise have the financial resources to be able to attend our academic conferences.

Global Fellowship Programme

IAFOR is committed to developing a professional fully-funded fellowship programme, building on and harnessing our extensive academic network of higher education individuals and institutions across Asia, Europe, and the United States to provide opportunities for cultural exchange and knowledge-sharing among Asian scholars and mid-career professionals.

Fellows selected for the IAFOR Global Fellowship programme will be able to pursue their individual research and creative interests in collaboration with IAFOR’s communities and mentors across various Asian countries, thereby engaging in the sharing and exchange of ideas and experiences.

of Delegates Hold Academic Positions

IAFOR has hosted conferences in Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto (Japan); London and Brighton (United Kingdom), New York, Virginia, Rhode Island, and Hawaii (United States), Chiang Mai (Thailand), Barcelona, Hong Kong, Singapore, Paris, Porto, and Dubai.

Since 2009, IAFOR has welcomed over 50,000 academics and professionals to its interdisciplinary conferences held around the world and online. The majority of conference attendees are higher education faculty, with 59% holding an academic post. At 25% of the total registered delegates, postgraduate and doctoral students make up the next largest group of attendees. The remaining participants come from the business sector (2%) and from the field of primary & secondary education (6%), with 7% registered as ‘other’.

We strive to curate an excellent academic programme of plenary and featured sessions, topical panels, workshops, and forums, but the heart of any academic conference is, of course, the parallel sessions during which the majority of delegates present their papers, then engage in discussion and receive feedback from their peers.

The responses we receive to our post-conference feedback surveys demonstrate that consistent high standards are maintained during this part of our conferences. 85% of respondents said they were satisfied with the academic quality of the conferences and 90% with the overall quality of the parallel sessions.

IAFOR events are among the most d iverse conferences on earth

Bridging divides of nation, culture, and discipline; informing and shaping ideas, research, practice, and policy in a comparative and contrastive space, IAFOR encourages the sharing and nurturing of diverse ideas.

Over the past year, 5,000+ delegates from more than 120+ countries have participated in an IAFOR event.

5,000+ Delegates 120+ Countries
