Welcome to a very special “One off” sale, to be held for the very first time in Melbourne! This Sale had originated from a small spark of an idea one of our vendors once planted, when he had stated that if we ever decided to hold an Auction in Melbourne, then we could have his collection to sell! A few years later, and in discussion with a number of other people, the idea finally took hold, and thus this Sale was born. We have been privileged with this Sale to be able to offer such an amazing array of stock across so many areas, and thus we present to you what we feel is one of the finest auctions assembled in a very long time….

Some Sale 74 Auction Highlights and more… Wow, where to even start….I think I will have to dedicate some space in my superfund as there is just too many fabulous items to miss out on….Seriously though, the top dozen items alone in this Sale are estimated in total at around $3,000,000, an impressive selection indeed. The highlight for me though would have to be the fabulous 1930 Penny with mint red. I remember seeing this coin in the late 80’s, and am just as blown away by it now as I was then. An iconic coin recognized the world over, and often referred to as the “Most Important Copper Coin of the 20th Century”, this highly significant coin is sure to attract world-wide interest. The amount of mint red this coin possesses is extraordinary, and is really what sets it apart from every other circulation issue, as well as being the key to it’s rarity and place amongst the very top rung of the Australian Pre Decimal Coin rarities. Another superb item on offer in this Sale is the unique Proof 1893M Half Sovereign. As the only known Proof example in private hands, and with only 5 circulated pieces in existence, this coin can rightly claim to be one of the key pieces, if not the key piece, to the whole gold series. Rare gold is a key feature in this sale, and with other superb items such as the Proof 1856 Pattern Half Sovereign, Choice 1855 and 1856 Sydney Mint Sovereigns, superb grade run of Choice Sydney Mint Half Sovereigns in high grade, as well as a rare Type I Adelaide Pound 1852, and two Type II Adelaide Pounds and a small batch of nice bullion sovereigns make for an all around impressive offering. Some other key highlight coins also on offer include a Proof Specimen 1914H Florin, one of only three known examples and in outstanding condition, with a fantastic provenance. Also, three Kookaburra Pennies are represented; a Type 7, Type 11 and a Type 12, all slabbed by NGC in high grades, along with a Rare Potosi Mint Holey Dollar in gVF, and two Dumps. Other highlights include a 1916 Mule Halfpenny, an aEF/gEF 1922/1 Overdate Threepence and the second finest known example, and a 1923 Halfpenny in UNC. Rare Proof Coins include a fantastic 1942I Bombay Halfpenny and Penny pair, a 1938 and 1945 Proof Penny, as well as a Proof 1938 Florin. Along with this is an excellent selection of Choice grade Pre Decimal, including key dates such as a 1921 Star Shilling, 1914H and 1932 Florins all in high grade. The “Alice Springs Collection” of Australasian Tokens is being offered in two parts, the first of which is in this sale. An impressive collection formed from nearly 50 years of collecting, it features some of the finest and rarest Tokens known. The undisputed highlight is the famous “Lord Raglan” Penny, one of only 2 known, and of the highest importance. Other key Tokens of note include an A Nicholas Penny, two Copper Taylor pieces, a Shilling and Fourpence, a Mason and Culley Penny, a Mackintosh and Degraves Shilling, a J Dixon Penny, a WJ Taylor Canadian Bank Penny, two ASNCo. Halfpennies, and much more including numerous lots divided into small quantities. Certainly this is the most impressive and important collection of Tokens offered in many years.

A number of rare Banknotes are also presented for sale in this auction, none better than the very rare 20 Pounds 1918 Cerutty-Collins in high grade. The finest such example of this rare issue offered in many years, this is sure to attract significant interest. A beautiful 10 Shillings 1913 Presentation Note number 000070 is another rare and impressive item. Not seen since 1980, this is one of the finest notes of this very rare and important issue, and is well priced. Other key items of note include a very rare Consecutive Pair of 10 Shillings 1918, the finest of three pairs known, and a very rare “Rainbow” Pound, one of our most interesting and attractive notes of the series. Choice grade George V issues, so hard to find in UNC now include a 10 Shillings 1926 Kell-Collins, and a superb 1 Pound Pair 1923 Miller-Collins, with both lots lovely fresh and crisp notes. Some rare Pre Federation issues include a gVF 1 Pound Colonial Bank, Issued and Specimen notes, and three Rare Superscribed issues. Also there is an interesting selection of Internment and War Related issues. Specimen notes are highlighted by both an important Type 3 TAA Presentation Set from the Cargo manager involved in the foiled robbery attempt, as well as a signed Type I set, both in their original albums of issue. A number of other interesting and unusual lots are scattered right through the catalogue, along with some lovely Brittish, World and Proclamation Coins, interesting Mis-Struck Coins and Misprinted Banknotes, and some rare Pattern issues, including a unique $25 Princess Diana Pattern Proof. This Sale really has something for every collector and all budgets. Whilst I have only touched the surface and glossed over the numerous superb items in this sale, I would urge everyone where possible to come and view these many magnificent rarities in person. Even though I personally think we have the best and most accurate photography, it is hard to do justice to many of these amazing items. I would also strongly suggest to all to give serious consideration to the many classic rarities on offer, for you never know when many of them will ever be seen again, and at what price….There is no doubting that now is the right time to buy or invest, and with Numismatic markets around the world surging to new highs, this may well be the last time so many fantastic buying opportunities are assembled in one sale.

Happy Collecting to all! In the same catalogue a Type 3 Kooka burra Penny was priced at $4,250, a 1951 Pattern Florin at $3,500, and a 5 coin 1953 proof set at $4,250. This clearly illustrates the potential of this coin. 449 Halfpenny 1916 Mule. Extremely rare variety, struck from a hybrid of dies of an Australian 1916 Halfpenny Reverse, and an Indian Quarter Anna Obverse. Struck after the outbreak of WWI, when the Royal Mint decided to delegate a portion of Australia’s copper and silver coinage to to be minted in Calcutta to foil German plans to intercept deliveries of coinage from Britain to Australia. This rare coin is believed to be of only 8-10 examples known, with this coin one of the better examples. A small Obverse edge chip doesn’t detract from the overall strong strike for this usually poor grade issue. A superb opportunity to procure a very rare and enigmatic coin, considered by some to be the rarest Australian Commonwealth coin. Ex Downies Sale June 1998, Lot 1148. 453 Penny 1930. An amazing coin, often described as the “Most Important Copper Coin” of the 20th Century. Possessing considerable mint red lustre and with lovely fresh surfaces. An obvious early strike, as it only just hints at the usual 1930 Penny striking weaknesses, and is sharp throughout and generally only lightly worn. Ex Spink Auctions Sale 22, 1987 (the front cover), lot 2250. Originally sold for $46,500 against an estimate of $35,000, the second top price in the sale. As a comparison, a set of 20, 50 and 100 Pound Trial specimens sold in the same sale for $29,500 (estimated current retail of over $1 Million), a Type 7 Kooka burra Penny sold for $5,000 ($155,000 now), and a cased 1916 Proof set $8,300 ($235,000 now). Also Ex Spink Sale 26, Nov 1988, Lot 906. As this coin is the finest grade circulation 1930 Penny and only known example with this amount of considerable mint red, it could well be argued that it’s uniqueness and impor tance makes it rarer than the Proof examples, of which 6 exist. Superb, and of the highest importance. gEF/aUNC $440000-450000

The Alice Springs Collection

This collection was commenced in the early 1960’s. I started collecting coins in 1948 with the finding of a Mint Uncirculated 1948 Perth Penny. This became the nucleus of a Penny date collection and subsequently a Penny date & mint set, followed by Halfpennies, and progressing into silver as finances permitted. This included getting the teller of a country bank branch to allow access to their entire coin holdings at a rate of 5 pounds at a time, usually exchanged daily. I became very proficient in the art of rolling coins into wrappers, indicating with a letter of the alphabet the rolls I had already seen. Always interested in anything unusual, I soon amassed a collection of misstrikes, die cracks etc, along with an occasional token. Tokens were keenly pursued in 1987 through to 1993 from several dealers and Auction Houses, with very few being found after 1990 due mainly to rarity. Some items have been upgraded in recent years. At the peak of the collection in early 2010, it consisted of more than 550 different tokens. This included several Kangaroo Office pieces, Patterns and rarities. Whilst the catalogues of Andrews, Heyde, Lampard, Renniks etc have been good reference material, the lack of up to date information, price details and such has retarded the collecting of these very important historical items of Australian (and New Zealand) Numismatics. I would encourage Greg McDonald to complete the work he has done on an excellent new catalogue (which I have seen in proof form), including price guides, as a matter of urgency (with respect). Terms And Conditions of Sale Please read the following “Terms of Sale” carefully. These terms are applicable to al floor bidders and mail bidders in this auction. Your submission of bids in this Auction constitutes your acceptance of these “Terms of Sale”. 1. This is a public auction sale, NOT an approval sale. At the fall of the gavel or auctioneer’s call of “Sold”, all sales are final. By bidding in this auction, the bidder personally guarantees all payments. The auctioneer has final discretion in all matters. In case of dispute, the lot(s) in question may be resold. Lots will be sold in their numerical sequence unless the auctioneer directs otherwise. 2. Payments must be made in full and lots must be removed the day of the sale or by 5p.m. the next day. Absolutely No lots will be released until payment in full has been made. Payment may be made in Cash, by Personal Cheques (with proper identification, at their discretion of International Auction Galleries), or by Bank Transfer or Major Credit Cards as stipulated. Successful postal bidders will be notified by mail via an auction receipt. 3. A 16.5% buyer’s premium will be added to the knock down price of each lot (includes GST). All Credit Card payments by Amex will incur a 3% surcharge. 4. Unless otherwise specifically stated by the auctioneer, each new bid shall be raised above the previous bid by such amount as is determined by the auctioneer during the course of the auction, and no party shall be allowed to retract his or her bid after acknowledgment by the auctioneer. 5. The auctioneer reserves the right to refuse any bid and to withdraw any goods from sale at any time, or to disclose any reserves or vendor information, without having to state any reason. 6. At the fall of the hammer, (if required by the Auctioneer), the purchaser shall give his or her full name and address, and pay 25% of the purchase price deposit. In default, the lot(s) purchased may, at the auctioneer’s discretion, immediately be reoffered and resold. All lots sold will remain the property of the owner/vendor until cleared payment is made in full. Only then will the title of ownership of the lots pass to the purchaser, irrespective of any terms or deferment of payment due. 7. Except as otherwise provided by state of federal law, no condition or warranty is given or implied by the auctioneer in respect of any lot offered. As all lots are given for inspection prior to the commencement of the sale, it shall be presumed that the goods have been inspected and that the purchaser accepts the goods bought with all faults, if any, as described. All lots are guaranteed genuine, except where so described; however if a lot sold is found to be a deliberate fake or forgery, the purchaser may return it, and receive upon confirmation of the same, a full refund. 8. The auctioneer shall not be liable for any description or mis-description given to the goods for sale. Any state-

ment as to the quantity of goods is approximate only and is as represented to the auctioneer. The auctioneer gives no warranty that the quantities as stated are correct. 9. If any purchaser fails to comply with any of these conditions or if any cheque given on account of the purchase price of any goods is dishonored, any monies which the purchaser has paid to the auctioneer on account of the purchase shall be forfeited absolutely to the vendor. The vendor or the auctioneer is at liberty to re-sell the lot in any manner and upon such terms and conditions as they may deem proper and to sue the purchaser for damages. All losses and expenses incurred by the vendor or the auctioneer and all damages which the vendor or the auctioneer may sustain resulting from any re-sale, shall be recovered from the purchaser as liquidated damages. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing the auctioneer in the event of such resale is entitled to: a) The amount of any commission lost as a result of the purchaser not proceeding with the purchase b) The cost of advertising and other general expenses in respect to any such re-sale. c) Any difference in price from the initial sale to the price received in the re sale of the items(s). A service charge of 2% per month (Or part thereof) will be added to all overdue accounts (30 days after the date of Auction is then deemed to be in the overdue period for unpaid accounts). 10. Estimates are given only as a guide, and not given as starting points for bidding: lots may sell for a price greater than or less than these estimates. Bidding will start at an increment above the lowest postal bid received, or at the Auctioneers sole discretion. All prices are in Australian Dollars. 11. No lots purchased by a floor bidder may be returned, including those lots where the bidder is acting as agent for another, or to mail bidders who have examined the lot(s). These are no returns or refunds except for reason of lack of authenticity or genuine mistake. Late remittance constitutes just cause for revocation of all return privileges. In the event that a bidder is acting as an agent for Another, and that agency has not been disclosed to the auctioneer in writing 24 hours before the Sale date, then the bidder is deemed by the auctioneer to be the final buyer in all respects, and is fully responsible for all payments, fees and charges. In no event may any lot(s) be returned after (21) days from the date of the auction. All sales are then final.
