January 2018

Dear Colleagues, 2017 saw IAGTO mark its 21st birthday and the global golf tourism industry celebrate six years of consecutive growth. It was another busy year in which we able to unveil new services for our members and organize a wide range of events and fam tours. Our membership has grown to over 2550 companies in 98 countries including some 670 golf tour operators in 65 countries. Many were able to participate in our Asia Golf Tourism Convention in Danang, our North America Golf Tourism Convention in Miami or the year-ending 20th International Golf Travel Market in Cannes. Aside from these, tour operators were hosted on numerous familiarization tours and participated in our 4th IAGTO Spain Trophy in Costa Blanca and our 2nd Mexico Golf Tourism Convention in Los Cabos. 2018 will see the 7th AGTC head to the Philippines for the first time and the 10th NAC move on to Oregon, with Slovenia hosting the 21st IGTM in mid-October. In addition we will be staging the first ever Golf Tourism Convention in Japan hosted by the Mie Prefecture in October and our 4th IAGTO Spain Trophy in Costa Calida in May. We anticipate that over the next three years, the demand for golf travel will continue to increase, while growth rates will reduce to 4-6% per year as demand exceeds supply in the most popular golf destinations. This will provide a great opportunity for emerging golf destinations and those that are able to increase their capacity while maintaining convenience of access. IAGTO’s focus will be on strengthening the delivery of services to our members by investing in our online platforms and on developing a deeper understanding of the business models of all of our members in order to prepare IAGTO for the future. Best wishes to you all for the year ahead,

IAGTO Review

IAGTO Review Looking to the Future after 21 Years With two decades under our belt, we spend much of our 21st year planning for the future. The global golf tourism industry itself is in fine health, enjoying six years of consecutive growth. Our projections, announced at the North America Convention in June 2017 are that golf travel will continue to rise over the coming three year, albeit at a lower rate of growth of between 4-6%, as demand begins to outstrip supply in some of the most popular golf destinations. This will create opportunities for destinations that implement a golf development strategy to ensure that they have the product in place to take advantage of this demand. With similar opportunities for destinations that succeed in attracting a larger slice of the market by ensuring that their existing service and product excels in giving the golf traveller what they are looking for, and promote themselves effectively.

IAGTO 360 Review Over the past decade business models of golf tour operators have developed, changed and morphed considerably, with a wide variety of technologies being harnessed and adapted both at the product level and the promotional level. Part of our strategy for the coming years is to develop a much deeper understanding of each and every one of our members, focusing particularly on the tour operators. All member tour operators are now invited to complete our online 360 Review which is entirely confidential but gives us a much clearer picture of the business. This is also where we store documentation related to tour operator licences, insurance coverage, company incorporation certificates and audited accounts. The data collected thru the 360 Review will also help us fine tune our Quarterly and Annual golf tourism surveys.

IAGTO Review

Tracking of Destinations Featured IAGTO has always kept a record of countries featured, promoted and sold by our member golf tour operators. This list of golf destinations is featured on the profile page of every golf tour operator on the members’ section of the IAGTO website. What changed on 1st October 2017 is that we now take a ‘snapshot’ on the 1st day of every month, so that we can maintain and review a historic record of the status of not only countries, but regions and sub-regions as well.

Fam Tour Management System We continued to develop our Fam Tour Management System throughout 2017, and we are now at the stage where we can track all familiarization trips taken by IAGTO members and our tour operators have a permanent record of the fams that they have participated on. Most importantly we have developed an automated Fam Tour Survey which generates a report for the host destination after all operators have completed the questionnaire. This report can also track the success of the fam by reviewing after 6 months or a year or longer, which operators are now promoting the destination visited.

Tour Operators can track their Fam Tour History

IAGTO Destination Conventions IAGTO Costa Blanca Trophy – Valencia Region Alicante was the host destination for the IAGTO Costa Blanca Trophy – Valencia Region in May 2017, which drew 75 golf tour operators from 21 countries and was staged in a partnership between IAGTO, the Costa Blanca Golf Association, the Costa Blanca Tourism Board and the Valencia Region Tourist Board. The event was the 3rd annual edition of the IAGTO Spain Trophy which focuses the attention of the golf tourism industry on a different golf destination within Spain each year. Inspection visits to region’s golf courses and meetings with golf tourism suppliers took place throughout the week, with the ‘Trophy’ taking place at the Melia Villaitana. Figures released after the Convention showed that golf visitor bookings to the Costa Blanca rose by 30%. The 2018 IAGTO Spain Trophy will be held in the Region of Murcia from 21-24 May with up to 80 golf tour operators and 80 golf tourism suppliers.

Mie Prefecture - Japan Mie Prefecture is located near the very centre of Japan, in an area blessed with a rich natural landscape of both mountains and coastlines. It is known as a treasure trove of luxurious marbled Japanese beef and seafood, making it a land of culinary delights. World heritage sites of significant cultural and historic value dot the prefecture, including Ise Shrine, the spiritual home of the Japanese people and the world heritage site Kumano Kodo. These are complimented by many leisure facilities, such as hot springs, aquariums and of course over 70 golf courses. Famously the 2016 G7 Summit of world leaders took place in Ise-Shima, the venue for JGTC. In 2020 we will see golf for the second time in the Olympics in Tokyo so this is the perfect time for Japan golf tourism to open its door more widely to international markets. Mie plays a leading role in Japan as the most pro-active golf destination with the private and public sectors working together to really welcome international visitors. We can offer not only an incredible range of golfing experiences but also the wonderful living culture, history, and gastronomy. Golf in Mie is extraordinary!

Cyprus Tourism Cyprus is a golfer’s paradise, a place where golf can be enjoyed all the year round in an ideal Mediterranean climate and especially during the sunny autumn, winter and spring seasons. There is a choice of four international standard 18-hole golf courses - Eléa, Minthis Hills, Secret Valley and Aphrodite Hills Golf, PGA National, Cyprus - all in close proximity within the Pafos region, situated in tranquil surroundings, amid gently sloping hills offering panoramic views towards the Mediterranean sea and landscape. They offer the latest state of the art golfing facilities and equipment to satisfy today’s discerning golfer. Cyprus has hosted several international golf tournaments in recent years, with much success. Dubai

Dubai An extraordinary golf destination marking four decades of excellence Dubai’s achievements in golf over the past 30 years have been nothing short of astonishing. The emirate has transformed from a golfing curiosity to a bucket list destination with 11 golf courses that contribute around 30 per cent of sport’s direct economic impact on Dubai, according to a 2015 Deloitte report. The emirate has pioneered the expansion of the European Tour, staging the tour’s season-ending flagship championship, the DP World Tour Championship, the culmination of the season-long Race to Dubai. Dubai and its golf clubs bring a quality of experience and a diversity that is irresistible to all who experience them. It is a city capable of competing with entire countries as a golf destination that offers everything a visitor could possibly want. Underlining that, Dubai was crowned Africa, Indian and Gulf States Golf Destination of the Year in the 2018 IAGTO Awards – the third time it has won the honour within the last 10 years in the prestigious annual golf industry accolades. The growth of golf in Dubai has mirrored the rise of the city itself. When Dubai opened its first golf course in 1988, it was dubbed the “Desert Miracle”. Emirates Golf Club was a postage stamp of vivid green in an otherwise flat expanse of sandy coastline and the tented Majlis clubhouse was the only building for miles around. Just one year later, the Dubai Desert Classic was born – a tournament that would transform both the European Tour and Dubai itself. The golf tournament helped put the emirate on the sporting map. The enormous success of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic paved the way for many more tournaments to be staged, and gave rise to the Race to Dubai, launched by Nakheel and Jumeirah Golf Estates in 2007. The DP World Tour Championship has evolved into one of the most prestigious events outside of the four Majors and has an enviable list of champions that includes double winners Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson, and Lee Westwood.

Dubai

Dubai’s golf courses Few cities on the planet can claim to offer a better collection of golf courses than Dubai. The emirate has invested heavily since it entered the golf market in 1988 with the opening of Emirates Golf Club.

The Els Club Dubai

Some of the biggest names in the sport have put their own unique stamp on the golfing landscape. Among them are Nick Faldo (Emirates Golf Club’s Faldo course), Greg Norman (the Earth and Fire courses at Jumeirah Golf Estates), Ernie Els (The Els Club in Dubai Sports City), eight-time European Tour Order of Merit champion Colin Montgomerie (Address Montgomerie), Thomas Bjorn (revamped Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, originally designed by Karl Litten), Peter Harradine (Jebel Ali Golf Resort) and 2016 Rio Olympics golf course designer Gil Hanse (Trump International Golf Club Dubai, opened in early 2017). Tiger Woods will join the list when his Trump World Golf Club Dubai layout, a Damac Properties project, opens in 2019. Dubai’s courses are renowned for their excellent year-round playing conditions – true, carpet-like greens and firm, fast fairways. The courses are in peak condition during the winter months, from late Trump International Golf Club Dubai November to early March, when you can usually rely on cool mornings and warm afternoons with temperatures peaking around 27˚C. Temperatures range between 26˚C and 35˚C over the shoulder months (March, April, May and October) and above 40˚C is the norm during July, August and September, when paspallum grasses thrive.

27

Dubai

Address Montgomerie

Location, location Dubai’s 11 golf courses are clustered together in three groups all close to one another, the exception being the JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort, which is 30km (20 minutes by car) from Dubai Marina. In the older part of town lies the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. The nine-hole Meydan Golf facility is just minutes from Downtown Dubai and the Burj Khalifa area. Three courses are located just off Dubai’s main city highway, Sheikh Zayed Road – two at Emirates Golf Club and Emaar’s Address Montgomerie Golf Resort & Spa, set within the city’s most opulent real estate development, Emirates Hills. The third group of clubs is located close together in residential communities off Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, with Arabian Ranches, The Els Club Dubai, the 36-hole Jumeirah Golf Estates and the new the Trump International Golf Club Dubai all within 15 minutes’ drive of one another. Another Emaar development, Dubai Hills, surrounds an 18-hole championship course that is nearing completion. Getting around by taxi or hire car is straightforward in Dubai, and it’s easy to plan an itinerary with 36 holes a day given the proximity of the courses. Rental clubs feature a range of shaft flex options to suit all levels of player and the latest product lines from brands like TaylorMade, Callaway and Ping.

Arabian Ranches

Dubai’s golf academies If Dubai’s golf courses are world class, its collection of academies may be better still. A winter base for numerous top tour professionals, from four-time Major champion Rory McIlroy to former Desert Classic winner Rafa Cabrera Bello and 2014 Ladies European Tour Rookie of the Year, Amy Boulden, Dubai’s practice facilities are served by an impressive array of state-of-the-art equipment. The emirate’s golf academies are also accessible to all. Tourists and residents can book golf lessons and use the facilities, and they receive the same treatment as tour professionals. Top golf academies include the Butch Harmon School of Golf based at The Els Club Dubai, the European Tour Performance Institute at Jumeirah Golf Estates and the Peter Cowen Academy Dubai at Majlis Course, Emirates Golf Club Emirates Golf Club, with which renowned European Tour-based coach Pete Cowen – who coached Open champions Henrik Stenson and Louis Oosthuizen as well as former world number one Lee Westwood – has long been affiliated. Many other top instructors from the tour are also regular Dubai visitors. 28

Dubai

Professional tournaments Dubai hosts three flagship golf tournaments: the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, the season-ending DP World Tour Championship and the Ladies European Tour’s finale, the Omega Dubai Ladies Classic. The Omega Dubai Desert Classic, dubbed the “Major of the Middle East” and held on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, was first played in 1989, making it the first European Tour event held outside the continent. The trophy has been hoisted by many of golf’s icons, from Tiger Woods to Seve Ballesteros, Ernie Els, Colin Montgomerie and Rory McIlroy. November’s showpiece DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates sees the winner of the Race to Dubai crowned. It has the biggest purse for a stand-alone European Tour event. The Omega Dubai Ladies Classic is one of the most prestigious events on the Ladies European Tour outside the co-sanctioned The Els Club Dubai Major Championships and has been won three times by China’s first-ever Major champion, and 2016 Olympic Games bronze medalist, Shanshan Feng. In 2015, the Asian Tour staged the Dubai Open, its season climax event, at The Els Club Dubai. The MENA Golf Tour (set up by Golf in Dubai to help Arab talent gain a foothold in the professional game) hosts two Dubai events, at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club and The Els Club Dubai.

Dubai’s celebrity connections For many top players, Dubai is the de facto “home away from home”. Elite stars rave about the courses, but they also love the hospitality and excellent practice facilities. Rory McIlroy has a winter home there, as does Spain’s Rafa Cabrera Bello. Other star golfers with close ties include Henrik Stenson, Europe 2018 Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn, former Europe captains Darren Clarke and Colin Montgomerie, Ernie Els, Greg Norman, Jeev Milkha Singh, Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick, winner of the 2016 DP World Tour Championship, while top women golfers with strong Dubai links include Dame Laura Davies, Shanshan Feng and Annika Sorenstam. Among current and former stars from other sports who regularly tee it up on Dubai’s fairways are cricketers Kevin Pietersen, Shane Warne and Michael Vaughan, jockey Frankie Dettori and footballers Luis Figo and Paul Ince.

Facilities Dubai’s golf clubhouses are just as jaw dropping as its courses. Echoing the emirate’s maritime history, Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club’s famous sail design was recently ranked eighth on golf. com’s list of the world’s 18 most iconic clubhouses, and it remains one of only two golf clubhouses in the world to appear on a bank note besides the Royal & Ancient clubhouse at St Andrews.

Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club

From the opulent Mediterranean villa styles of The Els Club Dubai and Jumeirah Golf Estates, to the Emirates Golf Club’s traditional Bedouin tents, these buildings are as well-appointed on the inside as they are impressive externally. Restaurants like the Address Montgomerie’s Nineteen, The Els Club’s Big Easy and Emirates Golf Club’s Le Classique are among the finest eateries in the city, and are just as welcoming to visiting golfers as they are to the tour professionals.

Earth Course 17th, Jumeirah Golf Estates

Golf buggies on every course are equipped with GPS, providing overhead hole graphics and exact distances to the pin.

Floodlit desert golf There are few more dramatic settings to play golf in than under floodlights beneath the towering skyline of Dubai Marina. Night golf has been a fixture in Dubai since the days of the Nad Al Sheba club, but for many visitors, it offers a surreal and memorable alternative to regular daylight play. Floodlit facilities in the emirate include the Faldo course and ninehole par 3 layout at Emirates Golf Club, Meydan Golf and the par 3 courses at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, the Address Montgomerie Dubai and Arabian Ranches. All of Dubai’s driving ranges are Meydan Golf also illuminated for evening practice. Although Dubai’s only sand course, the Dubai Country Club, closed in 2007, the novelty of the desert location presents interesting challenges on almost all of Dubai’s courses. The Creek has a jetty tee on the 6th hole, from which golfers face a daunting drive back over the city’s famous waterway. 30

Sustainability Dubai’s courses are acutely conscious of their environmental responsibilities. Recent improvements in irrigation technology and the development of grass strains have helped reduce water consumption and improve year-round playing conditions. Emirates Golf Club won the Efficient Use of Resources Award for 2015 in the IAGTO Sustainability Awards, recognising the club’s “highly focused and sustainable” approach to irrigation water technology. The early courses in Dubai are populated with palm trees and larger vegetation, while newer layouts have native areas that allow the emirate’s resident plant life to flourish. This is especially noticeable at the new Trump International Golf Club Dubai, which has incorporated winding sand barrancas and an absence of overseeded rough into its links-like design. For your second you are then free to grip it and rip it, with a 3 wood to hopefully leave 100 yards or less into this raised green. Give yourself an extra two clubs on your approach to get it up there and note, there is a false front provided by the B green (shorter green) so it’s best to feel like you are almost going too long.

Mie Prefecture, Japan

Mie and sake – Japan’s famous, traditional rice wine Due to its location at the most-travelled mountain pass in Japan, Mie served as an ancient gateway between eastern and western Japan and is one of the oldest sake-producing regions in Japan. Sake has been historically produced here for some 2,000 years. Travellers in ancient times would enjoy sake before heading east towards Kyoto up the mountain pass, as they couldn’t carry very much of it with them. Likewise, those coming down from the mountain pass from Kyoto heading towards Edo (Tokyo) would be thirsty and eager to enjoy the fine sakes as well as stock up for the rest of their trip. Mie’s abundant natural resources also help make it a gourmet food lovers’ delight. Famous for its seafood highlighted by oysters, abalone and succulent Ise spiny lobster, the area’s chefs create a full selection of traditional culinary specialties that can be matched perfectly with its local sakes. The region’s tall mountain ranges capture rainwater, creating streams and fresh-water springs that flow onto lush fields and plains, perfect for growing the fresh rice needed to produce quality sakes. The landscape is also perfect for breeding Iga and Matsuzaka cattle, whose marbled wagyu beef is an internationally sought-after delicacy – not to be missed and best enjoyed with sake! Perhaps the most famous sake brewer in Mie is located near Suzuka. Shimizu Seizaburo Shoten, founded in 1869, created the Zaku brand of sake that was enjoyed by dignitaries during their meal at the recent meeting of G7 nations hosted in the Ise-Shima region. This is just one of the many famous brands that are produced here in Mie, so visitors can order local sake at any of the local golf course restaurants. Each day, an expected 70,000 spectators will watch the biennial event unfold on the Albatros course at Le Golf National, in south-west suburb Saint-Quentin-enYvelines, while a TV audience of almost 500 million from 180 countries will make it the world’s third most-watched sports spectacle after football’s World Cup and the Olympic Games.

France is known for its great gastronomy, culture and diversity but not enough for its golf. So this is the most important occasion for us to say there is a huge range of golf in France, and that visitors who come for the gastronomy, culture and everything else can play golf during their stay.” A Play Golf in France website has also been developed by IAGTO to showcase the various regional golf destinations (www.playgolfInfrance.com).

France

Paris and environs Golfers who want to combine golf and a stay in France’s vibrant and beautiful capital can tee off in style just a short drive from Paris, with its glorious monuments, museums, shopping and nightlife.

6th hole, Le Golf National

Le Golf National opened in 1990 as a national centre for golf in France, with architects Hubert Chesneau and Robert von Hagge creating the Albatros stadium course – which will host not only the 2018 Ryder Cup but also the 2024 Olympics golf events – from ploughed fields and landfill. It recently underwent a 10-month makeover to improve irrigation and drainage and to add wooden edging to its lakes, while renovations to the on-site Novotel hotel included adding a spa and gym. The resort also offers the 18-hole Aigle and nine-hole Oiselet courses.

UGOLF Exclusiv Château de Cély

While several top-ranking courses in the Paris area are private – among them Morfontaine, Saint-Nomla-Bretèche and Saint Germain – there are more than two dozen courses around the capital visitors can play. Normandy

Golf de Dieppe

Easily accessible via air, land and sea, and with a 600km coastline bordering the English Channel – or La Manche, as it is known in France – this most beguiling of French regions has long tempted visitors from near and far. Hardly surprising, given the allure of its stunning cliffs and beaches, historic towns and cities, picture-postcard villages and its celebration of food and drink, quite apart from the infectious joie de vivre of its inhabitants. Normandy has also attracted visiting golfers for over a century and today offers a choice of over 30 courses, two dozen of them offering at least 18 holes. Settings range from clifftop and seaside locations, including one of France’s few links courses, to rolling parkland, dense woodland and the Seine Valley, close to the meandering river. Golf is remarkably good value in Normandy, particularly through the Normandy Golf Pass, which offers combined green fee packages for nine of its best courses.

Barrière Golf Deauville

Courses include: Barrière Golf Deauville, overlooking chic seaside resort Deauville; Golf d’Étretat, spectacularly set atop chalk cliffs; Golf d’Omaha Beach, above the World War II Normandy Landing beach; historic Golf de Dieppe; the forested Golf du Champ de Bataille; and links course Golf de Granville.

Brittany Surrounded on three sides by water and with 2,730km of coastline, Brittany is deeply rooted in both the land and the sea, offering breathtaking landscapes where visitors can discover glorious beaches, rugged cliff-lined coasts, islands that comprise France’s largest coastal bird sanctuary, moorland, ancient forests, beguiling villages and medieval walled towns. Its cultural heritage is celebrated in numerous festivals and events, among them traditional fest-noz Breton dance festivals.

Golf Blue Green Pléneuf-Val-André

Brittany’s golf courses span everything from links to manicured parkland, in settings including cliff tops, forests, seaside and riverside, and are remarkably uncrowded and reasonably priced. Golf can form part of a break that includes spa and wellness activities, gastronomy, exploring cities, heritage and history through its forts and castles, and water sports. The region’s best courses include: Dinard Golf, established in 1887 and France’s second-oldest course; Les Ormes Golf & Resort, on a château estate now a holiday resort on the Emerald Coast; Saint Malo Golf Resort; former National Open venue Golf Blue Green Saint Laurent; Golf de Cornouaille; Golf Blue Green Pléneuf-Val-André; and Golf de Brest Iroise, France’s most westerly course.

South West The south-western corner of France offers visitors contrasting cities two hours apart: Bordeaux, the stately wine capital of the world with 65 appellations and a UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic heart, and elegant Biarritz, a seaside town on the Bay of Biscay that has been attracting holidaymakers since Europe’s royal families began visiting in the mid-1800s. Bordeaux, known as the Pearl of Aquitaine, is ideal as a base for a golf, gastronomy and wine holiday with courses close to the city and the opportunity Golf du Médoc for visitors to visit vineyards and enjoy the area’s wines, cuisine and culture. Courses include the two 18-hole layouts at Golf du Médoc, Les Châteaux and Les Vignes, with both having every hole named after a wine château, and Grand Saint-Emilionnais Golf Club, American designer Tom Doak’s first Continental Europe layout and just six miles from wine town Saint-Émilion. Biarritz has 16 golf courses within a 100km radius, in the Basque Country (courses include Golf de Biarritz le Phare, Golf de Chiberta and Golf d’Arcangues), the Landes (courses include Golf de Moliets, Golf Blue Green Seignosse and Golf Club Hossegor) and the Bearn Pyrenees (including Pau Golf Club, the oldest golf course in Continental Europe).

The courses include the historic Old Course of CannesTerre Blanche Mandelieu, established in 1891, Cannes-Mougins and Saint Donat country clubs, Royal Mougins Golf Resort and Open Golf Club venues Grande Bastide and Opio Valbonne. Over 125 years old, Waterville Golf Links is currently positioned at No.2 in the Golf Channel’s Top Courses in Ireland and ranked No.3 in Ireland by the UK’s Golf World. In 2017 Waterville Golf Links completed part one of a two phase clubhouse renovation. Golfers raved over the new larger clubhouse with a state of the art locker facility, beautiful golf shop and a new menu and restaurant management.

Waterville Golf Links, Ireland

A Fazio-designed practice facility was added in recent years to the Waterville House Estate grounds and a state-of-the-art health facility was added for the enjoyment of residents. All these projects have firmly positioned Waterville’s reputation as one of Ireland’s premier links golf destinations. The magnificent 18th century Waterville House is an elegant period Irish Manor House set on the Wild Atlantic Way amidst the natural beauty of a 40-acre estate overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Waterville House has 13 en-suite bedrooms, sauna, steam room, health facility with massage room, billiard room and private golf practice facility. Tetherow Golf Club

Central Oregon Golf Trail The accolades continue to build: Three of Golf Digest’s Top 100 Courses, half of GolfWeek’s Top 10 Courses in Oregon, a Golf Digest Top 10 Family Golf Destination, a Golf Digest Top 25 Golf Destination in the World. That’s a lot of high, but deserved, praise for the Central Oregon Golf Trail – 30 diverse courses located within an hour’s drive of each other in Bend/Sunriver, from Prineville to Sisters, and from Redmond to La Pine. A tour of our Top 100 Courses is the perfect way to experience a lot of what the Central Oregon Golf Trail has to offer. Day 1

Tetherow

Begin the trail with the lavish lodging that overlooks the course at Tetherow. Grab a quick bite at The Row before heading down to the range where you’ll meet your caddie. There’s music playing on the range and the vibe is laid back and fun – in fact, forego the cart for a GolfBoard and surf the turf during your round. The smile won’t leave your face even after a couple of double bogeys. The high praise for Tetherow begins with this: GOLF Magazine named it the Best New Course of 2008. Since then, the David McLay Kidd Scottish links masterpiece in the heart of Bend has only become more popular. Today, it’s ranked 63 in Golf Digest’s Top 100.

Tetherow Golf Club

Scenic and challenging, Tetherow’s knobs, knolls, tufts and fescue are a more common sight on courses along the ocean, but they feel oddly perfect in Bend’s high-desert setting. At 7,300 yards, Tetherow is all the course you can handle, especially with prevailing winds whipping across the links.

After your round, head into downtown Bend for a pint at one (or more) of its craft breweries before dinner at 5 Fusion and Sushi Bar, home to a chef who three times has been a James Beard Award semi-finalist. 65

Crosswater Golf Club

Day 2

Crosswater Club & Sunriver Resort

Just 15 minutes from Bend, you’ll find Sunriver Resort – the Pacific Northwest’s premier family and golf destination resort. Crosswater Club is the resort’s flagship course, with a perennial spot among Golf Digest’s Top 100 courses in America – ranked at number 50 in 2017. Caldera Links

The Woodlands

The Meadows

The PGA Professional Championship returned to Crosswater for the fourth time in 2017, adding to several NCAA championship events and a Champions Tour Major held at the course over recent years. It’s a Bob Cupp design that stretches out to 7,600 yards over 600 acres of heathland. Trouble abounds with the little Deschutes River winding through the course, coming into play as many as seven times during your round. After the round, settle your bets with a quick nine at Caldera Links, an immaculate short course that will test your iron game, before lunch at Carson’s American Kitchen at the resort.

After lunch, choose another 18 to complete the day. The Woodlands Course is a Robert Trent Jones Jr design that winds through the forest in Sunriver. Water is abundant here as well, with unique lava rock outcroppings making for a scenic track. The Meadows Course is another gem, having hosted several NCAA Championship events and the PGA Professional Championship. The John Fought design pays tribute to the great American golf courses from the 1920s and 30s with its aesthetic grace, while its dramatic use of directional and forebunkers serve up ample challenges for golfers of all skill levels. Dinner awaits at one of the fine restaurants at the Village at Sunriver. 66

Day 3

Pronghorn

Pronghorn Resort is also just 15 minutes from Bend – and home to two of Central Oregon’s most highly-acclaimed courses. The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course is no. 36 on Golf Digest’s Top 100 list while the private Tom Fazio Course was voted no. 11 on Golfweek’s list of Best Residential Courses for 2017.

Jack Nicklaus Signature Course

The courses cut through the natural setting of lava rock outcroppings within an ancient juniper forest. You’ll use the snow-capped Three Sisters Mountains in the distance as targets on this fast and firm course that features some of the finest putting surfaces on which you’ll ever roll the ball. From the pristine practice area to the pro shop, Pronghorn is a true luxury golf experience in Central Oregon. It has the feel of a gated Tuscan village including a 55,000-square-foot clubhouse, recreational centre, spa, vacation rentals and a brand new lodge. For dinner, stay on-site and enjoy fine dining at Cascada or head back into Bend and Worthy Brewing – the world’s only brewery with a full-sized telescope. Day 4

Big Meadow

Black Butte Ranch

Don’t let your visit to Central Oregon escape without a stop at Black Butte Ranch, near Sisters. The breathtaking Cascades loom large over this golf destination community of two amazing courses over 1,800 acres. John Fought renovated The Glaze Meadow Course in 2012 while the Big Meadow Course was named by Golf Magazine as One of the Best Courses You Can Play in Oregon in 2013. Luxury vacation homes, tennis courts, horseback riding, pools and more await at this family-focused destination resort.

Bandon Dunes, Oregon Coast

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort’s Pacific Dunes course

You’ve probably heard of Bandon Dunes. Perched high above the Pacific Ocean, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is unlike any other. Four world-class courses unfold along a sweeping shoreline, grassy dunes and towering coastal forest. Beyond the stunning scenery is a unique, true-to-form game of golf. Firm turf, challenging tee shots and the occasional strong ocean breeze make for an unforgettable experience. Bandon Dunes is regularly ranked among the world’s top golf resorts. The namesake course, designed by David McLay Kidd, is considered the first genuine Scottish-style links course in the US. Year after year, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is honoured, from Golf Digest’s Best Resort in North America in 2011 to all four courses ranked highly in Golfweek’s Best Modern Courses and GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Courses You Can Play. And the accolades keep coming. In 2020, the resort will host the US Amateur Championship. And there’s plenty to do in between rounds. Prime your skills at the 13-hole par-3 Bandon Preserve track or the 18-hole putting course. Indulge in a day at the resort spa. Experience Oregon’s South Coast like you’ve never done before. Bandon Dunes is open year-round, and with a fifth 18-hole course in the works, it continues to innovate and inspire.

Pumpkin Ridge, Greater Portland A championship 36-hole golf club near Oregon’s largest city, Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club is known as Portland golf at its finest. Since opening in 1992, Pumpkin Ridge has hosted several major national tournaments, including the Nike Tour Championship, the US Amateur Championship and the US Women’s Open. The club’s public course, Ghost Creek, features a par-71, 6,839-yard layout designed by Bob Cupp to emphasise the wetlands terrain, with subtle elevation changes that both surprise and delight.

Ghost Creek

Pumpkin Ridge is where great golfers become even better. Hone your skills with a lesson taught by PGA professionals Jerry Mowlds and Christopher Smith or tee off at the club’s 17-acre practice facility. 68

Oregon, USA

Sandpines, Oregon Coast With windswept sand dunes and towering pines, Sandpines Golf Links is a breathtaking place to tee off. The 18-hole course borders the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America and features a mild coastal climate with pleasant year-round playing conditions. Renowned golf course architect Rees Jones designed the par-72, 7,190-yard course, inspired by the natural lay of the land. The outward nine is shaped by forest and lakes, while the inward nine reflects a traditional links style. Challenging yet generous, Sandpines is an ideal course to test skills and indulge senses.

Sandpines Golf Links

Running Y, Southern Oregon Featuring the only Arnold Palmer signature course in Oregon, Running Y Ranch Resort is a premier destination for international golfers. The prestigious Palmer even named Running Y as one of his favourite 16 designs. And he’s not alone. Running Y is a regular on Golf Week’s Oregon Top 10 and ranked number one on Golf Advisor’s Top 20 Golf Courses in Oregon.

Arnold Palmer Signature Course, Running Y Ranch

The 72-par, 7,133-yard course is surrounded by impressive beauty, overlooking the unspoiled Oregon Outback. The front skirts meadows and an extensive wetlands area while the back fairways wind through lake-dotted woodlands. With five tee boxes on each hole, the course welcomes players of all skill levels. And thanks to more than 300 days of sunshine in Klamath Falls, it’s open year-round.

Arnold Palmer Signature Course, Running Y Ranch 69

Oregon, USA

Salishan, Oregon Coast Rugged natural beauty and coastal elements make Salishan Golf Links an exciting 18-hole course for players of all abilities. Designed in 1964 and revamped by PGA Tour veteran Peter Jacobsen 40 years later, the par-71, 6,470-yard course is as scenic as it is challenging. The front nine hugs an old-growth forest hillside while the back nine winds toward the ocean on links-like land. With great shot variety, greens as smooth as glass and the roar of the mighty Pacific Ocean close by, Salishan is known as one of the Oregon Coast’s finest.

Salishan Golf Links

Fun continues off the course. Salishan Resort is home to four restaurants, one of the largest wine cellars in Oregon and an award-winning spa.

Langdon Farms, Willamette Valley Easy to access and a joy to play, Langdon Farms Golf Club is a golfers’ getaway in the rich farmland of the Willamette Valley. But due to its close proximity to Portland, just 15 miles away, Langdon Farms is consistently ranked highly among Portland golf courses. Award-winning architects Bob Cupp and John Fought designed the course to emphasise dynamic mounding and bunkering. The result is an attractive links-style course that puts a premium on accurate iron shots – while staying playable for the recreational golfer. Langdon Farms is committed to dry playing conditions, making it an ideal course every day of the year. Copy supplied by Visit Central Oregon and Travel Oregon

Omni Tucson National Golf Club For some 30 years, Omni Tucson National Resort has hosted prestigious PGA TOUR events where legendary champions have graced its fairways and battled for glory. Omni has two championship golf courses. The desert-style Sonoran Course, designed by TOUR champion and Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman, offers a combination of native desert vegetation with strategic fairway bunkering. The more traditional Catalina Course hosts the Cologuard Classic, a Tucson PGA TOUR Champions event (February 26–March 4, 2018) and is ranked among Golf Digest’s 75 Best Golf Resorts in North America. It is parkland style with eight lakes and more than 80 bunkers, some very deep and penal. The 18th hole is noted as one of the PGA TOUR’s most challenging finishing holes. Nestled in the foothills of the majestic Santa Catalina Mountains, the resort offers 128 casitas, several dining options, Tucson’s only four-star, Forbes-rated spa, and facilities that include outdoor dining terraces and a cabana bar, tennis courts and an infinity edge pool. Starr Pass Golf Club at JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa Former home to the PGA TOUR’s Tucson Open, this 27-hole, Arnold Palmer Signature design is a true desert experience, as all hazards are natural elements of the environment. The three nines wind through Saguaro-studded mountains and arroyos, each named after the abundant desert wildlife: Rattler, Road Runner and Coyote. The Starr Pass legend, which began over 120 years ago when Richard Starr crafted a trail through the rugged Tucson Mountains, continues today as the Coyote’s 6th fairway marks the trail. The 6th is rated the third best hole in Tucson.

Its 40,000 native plants and 14 acres of man-made lakes create a golfing oasis in the desert landscape. Sewailo, meaning flower world in the Pascua Yaqui language, blends the native landscape with picturesque lakes and streams. Adjacent to the course, Casino del Sol Resort’s high-rise hotel includes dining, a high-end gaming salon, the Hiapsi Spa and Fitness Centre, and a pool with private cabanas.
