Dear Friends, Thank you once again for the 2014 Honorary Award and I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to pick it up but I heard it was a terrific evening. It was an honour to receive the award and be associated with the illustrious list of past winners, a true roll call of great golfers and great designers. Whilst I still have a very active playing schedule, I am also working very hard in developing my design business even further. This year should see the opening of my two Malaysia courses in Langkawi and Johor as well as developments in new tourism destinations like Bahrain and Namibia. I also understand that many of my courses are already affiliated with IAGTO, so I do hope you have managed to experience one of my courses first hand. Dear Colleagues, As the golf tourism industry enters its third year of consecutive growth, we hope that every IAGTO member can now focus on their own business strengths in order to make this generic global growth both personally relevant and sustainable. IAGTO’s role will be to support the industry by continuing to roll out new services, create more business opportunities, provide useful market intelligence and help reduce administrative and operational costs for its members. 2014 will see the launch of the new members’ section of our website that we have been working on now for over a year. 2013 saw a number of milestones reached for IAGTO as we held the largest ever golf tourism event in the Asia Pacific. The 3rd AGTC will take place at the award winning Mission Hills Haikou on Hainan Island in China from 24-27 March 2014. After a spectacular event in Marco Island, our 6th North American Convention moves to Charleston, South Carolina from 8-11 June where we expect record numbers to attend. Costa Daurada staged what was widely accepted to be one of the best IGTM’s for many years and we now look forward to the 17th edition of the show in Lake Como, Italy from 27-31 October. 2014 will see IAGTO become established in more than 100 countries and we continue to work hand in hand with more golf destinations than ever before in order to help them position themselves better to attract even more golf tour operator business. Three years of consecutive growth Maybe now is a good time to put both of those well-worn economic terms ‘crisis’ and ‘recovery’ back into the locker. Growth of 9.3% in 2012 followed by another positive year in 2013 with all indications that 2014 will continue along the same vein, should see in three consecutive years of growth in the global golf tourism industry. The term recovery is, perhaps, best avoided as this would suggest that we are heading back up the same road down which we came, whereas what we are experiencing now is a period of growth, not rampant, not exponential, but simple steady healthy growth. Business strength is now what we hope that every IAGTO member can focus on in order to make all this generic global growth both personally relevant and sustainable.

Annual Golf Tourism Survey IAGTO’s ground breaking Global Golf Tourism Report published in February 2013 showed that golf tour operator sales grew by an average of 9.3% across the world in 2012 and that IAGTO operators made the golf travel arrangements for over 1.6 million golfers with sales in excess of US$2 billion. Our first of what will now become an annual survey was completed by 650 member companies, including 49% of all IAGTO golf tour operators and 400 golf resorts, courses and hotels.

As the chart below demonstrates, we were able to determine the relative importance of all golf destinations to the combined mass of IAGTO operators by asking each operator to rank their top 5 destinations, with the top seven destinations being: 1. Spain 3. Ireland 5. Scotland 7. Thailand 2. Portugal 4. Turkey 6. USA

Despite only 57% of IAGTO operators being based in Europe, the destination that exhibited the greatest growth in 2012 compared to 2011 was also Spain, with the top 7 most significant destinations being: 1. Spain 3. Portugal 5. Scotland 7. UAE 2. USA 4. Thailand 6. Ireland
Growth is obviously one of the most interesting values as it depicts trends based on growing popularity and business strategy, and this is where even the smaller destinations can really shine. Both Cambodia and Bulgaria featured in the Top 10 and other notable destinations showing considerable growth were China, Vietnam & Malaysia; England, Italy & Sweden; South Africa, Morocco, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. The survey also enabled us to get a better understanding of the nature of golf tour operating. Whilst 38% of IAGTO operators sell only golf holidays, 62% sell other products as well. Of that 62% golf represents on average 52% of their total sales.

3rd Asia Golf Tourism Convention The 2nd AGTC in Pattaya, Thailand in 2013 was a tremendous success with some 500 delegates attending, many new to IAGTO. The 3rd AGTC will take place at the award winning Mission Hills Haikou in Hainan Island, China from 24-27 March 2014 as interest peaks in China both as a golf destination and as an outbound market. Over 150 golf tour operators and 100 media will attend the largest international golf tourism event ever to be staged in Asia. All delegates will be able to stay and experience Mission Hills Haikou whilst the Convention itself will take place at the magnificent Hainan International Exhibition Center. There will be pre and post fam trips for buyers throughout the island in order to showcase the most tropical of China’s golf destinations.

6th North America Golf Tourism Convention Delegates attending the 5th NAC on Florida’s Paradise Coast hailed it as a roaring success and the best yet. The 3-day event held at Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort, Golf Club & Spa, attracted a record 275 attendees including 92 golf tour operators from 21 countries and representatives from more than 100 golf resorts, courses, hotels, inbound operators and tourist boards from the USA, Canada, Central America and the Caribbean. South Carolina’s historic city of Charleston will be the setting for the 6th NAC from 8-10 June 2014. The destination is a beacon of top golf, with former Ryder Cup and 2012 US PGA Championship host venue, Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course, which is rated the toughest test of golf in America, close by. This year’s Convention will be expanded to include two full days of bsuienss sessions to cater to the demand for more time for meetings with more than 300 delegates expected. All delegates will be housed at the Mills House Hotel right in the centre of the city.

17th International Golf Travel Market In November 2013 Costa Daurada hosted what was widely applauded as one of the best IGTMs in recent history. It was attended by 1400 delegates from 60 countries who were able to conduct a record number of meetings in a state of the art Convention Centre and enjoy spectacular social events including the Welcome Reception, IAGTO Wild West Night and IAGTO Awards Gala Dinner. The 17th edition of IGTM will be hosted in Italy’s Lake Como region, one of Europe’s most beautiful and popular travel destinations. Organised by Reed Travel Exhibitions, the world’s premier global event for golf tourism suppliers, buyers and media will take place from October 27-30, 2014, at the Villa Erba Exhibition and Conference Centre, sited on the banks of Lake Como. This will be a great opportunity for Italy to showcase its many golf destinations and position itself as one of Europe’s most exciting, and growing, golf travel destinations. Lake Como, 40 miles from Milan’s Malpensa Airport, is in the region of Lombardy and is part of the northern Italian Lakes District.
Golf Tourism Industry embraces Sustainability Following the announcement of a strategic partnership between IAGTO and the Golf Environment Organization (GEO) a year ago, sustainability took centre stage at the 14th annual IAGTO Awards Ceremony. For the first time, four awards were presented to golf courses for their achievements in sustainability, for Nature Conservation, Efficient use of Resources, Community Engagement together with an overall winner for Environmental Sustainability. The results of this collaboration are already tangible, with 60 IAGTO golf courses have participated in the GEO OnCourse™ programme throughout 2013 which provides them with support and expertise to record and develop sustainability at all levels. We have been able to highlight the many myriad efforts that IAGTO courses have been going to for many years to look after the environment and engage with their local communities. 14

Golf Destination Support IAGTO is working with more golf destinations than ever before to help them position themselves in the best possible way to attract more golf tour operator business. At the beginning of the year we were able to help the IAGTO Sanya Chapter in China develop their Sanya Golf Paradise identity and showcase this new tropical golf destination to our membership. We have been working closely with the Malaysia Golf Tourism Association throughout the year to get their message across to the media in key markets. In South Africa IAGTO’s Chief Executive attended a golf tourism forum hosted by the country’s National Department of Tourism which resulted in a declaration that golf was to become a central pillar of South Africa’s new sports tourism strategy. In the Caribbean IAGTO has been working closely with both the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico to help develop their own golf tourism strategies. Whilst in Europe IAGTO staged its third IAGTO Ireland Workshop at the K Club to great effect and hosted an IAGTO Golf Day in Sweden for Visit Scotland and South Africa Tourism which attracted the most important Swedish golf tour operators and golf travel media. This in fact was such a success that IAGTO will be staging three Golf Days in the UK, Germany and Sweden in 2014.

IAGTO Awards 14th IAGTO Awards Ceremony The Tarragona Placa de Toros (bull ring) was the magnificent setting for the 14th annual IAGTO Awards sponsored by Etihad Airways whose well-established relationship with IAGTO dates back to 2005 when they became the first airline to join our IAGTO Preferred Airline scheme. Etihad not only carries golf bags free of charge in addition to standard baggage allowance, but also flies to 35 established golf destinations and 25 outbound golf traveller markets. The Awards Ceremony saw the addition of a new section recognising excellence in golf course sustainability. As well as an overall winner the golf course that demonstrated excellence in sustainability across the board, there were three category awards for Nature Conservation, Efficient use of Resources and Community Engagement. Applications for the sustainability awards were judged by the Golf Environment Organization (GEO), whose chief executive, Jonathan Smith, said: “The results of our collaboration with IAGTO are already tangible, even within the span of 12 short months. Sixty IAGTO golf courses have participated in our OnCourse™ programme this year which provides them with support and expertise to record and develop sustainability at all levels. We were hugely impressed by the myriad efforts that IAGTO courses have been undertaking to look after the environment and engage with their local communities. These awards highlight some of the most significant achievements, and showcase a much wider commitment and contribution across the industry.” The much anticipated Honorary Award recipient this year was Ernie Els whilst golf destinations and golf resorts from across the globe saw their achievements applauded in front of a packed audience of 1100 IAGTO members from 65 countries.

Al Ain A golfing mirage in the Garden City Al Ain, also known as the Garden City due to its greenery, is the second-largest city in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and is located inland near to the border of Oman. Just over one hour from the Abu Dhabi airport and one and a half hours from the airport in Dubai, it offers easy accessibility from either and is home to one of the Emirate’s hidden treasures.

Son Gual Golf Son Gual is a dream come true When German businessman Adam Pamer was disappointed by the courses he played on holiday in Mallorca, he went about putting it right. He decided he would build a golf course that came up to the standards he and his friends would demand. Pamer, who had been visiting the island since 1974, bought a track of attractive land just east of the island’s capital, Palma, engaged the three-time German amateur champion, Thomas Himmel, to design a course and dug deep to fund the development which opened officially in October 2007. It features large lakes, 66 bunkers, 800 olive trees - some more than a thousand years old - wild flowers in the rough areas and vineyards in several areas around the course. The olive trees and vineyards have already borne fruit - literally - as the club has its own wine and olive oil. As investments go, it has proved sound. Just four years after Golf Son Gual opened, it was recognised by Golf World magazine as the number one on the island and ninth best in Spain - quite an achievement given that much of the competition has been around a lot longer. The magazine’s review stated: “When Golf World visited, we could not have been more impressed - hence the significant rise up the rankings. Son Gual could have hosted a European Tour event the following morning by doing nothing more than take out the white tee markers and send the pros off the tips…”

That is a stunning testimonial for a golf course prepared only for a normal day’s play for members and visitors, and the outstanding condition was clearly one of the reasons for Son Gual’s leap from 91st to 44th position in Europe in Golf World’s Top 100 courses in Continental Europe - making it now the eighth-best course in Spain. In May 2009, it hosted the Mallorca Senior Open and received gushing praise from a number of the participants; former Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam even compared the greens to those at Augusta National. The 1991 Masters winner said: “It’s a bit like Augusta. There are a lot of slopes on the greens. You’ve got to get the ball on the right side of the hole - if you don’t you’ll be struggling. Miss it on the wrong side and you’re dead.” His sentiments were echoed by European Tour pro Chris Wood, who visited Son Gual recently and wrote on his blog: “The place [Son Gual], which is just outside Palma, is immaculate, while the course is similar to the ones we play on tour.” Compliments like that must have been music to the ears of Pamer and designer Himmel, and the Pamer family - Adam’s son, Andreas, is the club’s general manager - has refused to rest on its laurels and continues to push the boundaries as far as customer satisfaction levels are concerned. Andreas explained: “From the very first day my father envisaged this golf course, the priority was to enhance the golfing experience, whether you were a member or just a day visitor. That was one of the reasons we instigated the 15-minute gap between tee times. “We feel we have a championship course here but it is essential that a visit here can be enjoyed by all: low-handicappers or highhandicappers; golfer and non-golfers - which is why we also put such effort into the quality of the off-course experience, too, and continue to work hard on further projects to enhance the overall enjoyment.”

Tight planning regulations - “tight” at least in Spanish terms meant that initially a hotel was not a consideration on the site, but the burgeoning international status of Son Gual and the desire to boost the local economy may soften opposition in the near future. The great links challenge – Bali’s best Only 20 minutes driving distance from Ngurah Rai International Airport, New Kuta Golf is located in Bali’s south-western region of Pecatu and is set on an 85-hectare (210-acre) plot of prime coastal land on Bukit Peninsula, within the Pecatu Indah Resort grounds. A championship-standard course and the first links-style layout in Indonesia, it will both challenge the low handicapper and reward the novice. The front nine plays inland and navigates away from the clubhouse into an area where many kapok trees are the predominant feature. The 6th hole is named after the course’s principal architect, Ronald Fream, who says: “Hole 6 is our standout par 3. We had ample space to be different. This large space allowed the use of expansive alternate teeing surfaces, and a vast area of intimidating sand.” This is a unique hole in that the large, island green is completely surrounded by a broad swath of sand. It is a classic par 3 delightfully set with the hills behind. Golfers can visit The Bunker halfway house at the tee for some refreshment. On the back nine, the par-3 15th hole, called The Cliffhanger, is New Kuta’s signature hole and is perched above a limestone cliff. The sound of the crashing Indian Ocean surf way below the green adds to the overall drama on this hole. The tee box of the 16th hole looks out on Balangan Beach to the left. The elegant par-5 18th finishes (as does the 9th) just a few yards from the shaded patio serving New Kuta’s magnificent clubhouse, where the formidable Links Restaurant & Bar (and the club’s dedicated spa) make it an ideal place to relax after the round. 75

The azure-blue South China Sea surrounding the island is rich in corals, with more than 260 varieties creating an underwater wonderland in clear water giving 25-30 metres visibility. A notable attraction is the Sanya Nanshan Buddhism Cultural Tourism Zone, 40km west of Sanya, with its towering Guanyin Buddha statue standing 108 metres high on a man-made island, and the Nanshan Temple complex. Also at Nanshan is scenic Taoist site Dongtian Park. Close to Sanya is Tianya Haijiao – the End of the Earth – which is a scenic and romantic beauty spot that is the most southerly part of Hainan Island and China’s southernmost point. Hainan Island is also called “Coconut Island” for the many coconut trees that grow on it and its coconut production. Luhuitou Peninsula Jutting out into the South China Sea a few kilometres south of Sanya, and flanked by Sanya Bay on one side and quieter sandy beach of Dadonghai Bay on the other, the hilly Luhuitou Peninsula is steeped in folklore and romance. The hill which is the highest point of the peninsula, at around 280 metres high, forms the focal point of the lush Luhuitou Park and gives glorious views of both sunrise and sunset as well as offering spectacular vistas of Sanya City. It is said to resemble a deer looking back, a literal translation of the peninsula’s name that alludes to a Li Minority legend about a deer that lures a hunter there then turns into a beautiful girl, and they fall in love. An imposing granite statue of the deer and hunter stands at the top of the hill, which is awash with the red flowers of the triangle plum – the official flower of Sanya and a type of bougainvillea. The park is a favourite place for lovers to visit, who tie ribbons to branches of an old tree on the hill.

Haitang Bay China’s new luxury resort destination, Haitang Bay is a 20-kilometre-long curve of beautiful beaches 28km from Sanya City and 40km from its international airport that has been developed for tourism since 2007 and is planned to eventually have 40 resorts.
