Dear Friends, Thank you once again for the 2013 Honorary Award which was presented to me in Vilamoura last year. I was delighted to receive this fantastic award and honoured to be associated with the past winners, a true roll call of great golfers and great designers. I very much enjoyed meeting all of you including some old friends and it’s also inspiring to see the variety of golf destinations promoting themselves to the worlds travelling golfers. After retiring from the competitive side of the game; I have put my energies into golf course design and I was delighted to announce at the Awards that I will be designing just 18 Signature courses around the world. Hopefully you’ll get a chance to enjoy a round of golf on one of my courses this year as we all work towards taking the game of golf and people to great destinations around the world. I wish to thank you once again for this prestigious award and wish you all the best for the year ahead. Happy golfing and best regards,

Tony Jacklin

January 2013

Dear Colleagues, 15 years since its foundation, IAGTO’s membership rose for the first time to over 2000 companies and organizations in 90 countries last year, a landmark moment matched by the growth in golf tour operator members to almost 500 in 60 countries. 2012 also marked our 1st Asia Golf Tourism Convention, our 4th North America Convention, the 15th International Golf Travel Market and our final Mid Year Convention. Overall it was a solid year for the global golf tourism industry without too many surprises, which was a nice change! Stability and good planning are the bedrock for strong growth and the omens are therefore looking good for 2013. Important dates to take a note of including our 2nd AGTC which will take place at the Royal Cliff Hotel in Pattaya, Thailand from 29 April to 2 May; our 5th NAC taking place at the Marriott Marco Island in Florida from 26-29 June and the 16th IGTM on the Costa Daurada in Spain from 11-14 November. Golf resorts, golf courses, hotels and other suppliers should not forget that they can now contract online at www.iagto.com with more some 500 golf tour operators worldwide – a new service activated last year. This edition of the IAGTO Yearbook is full of great information, tailored for the needs of golf tour operators, on golf destinations worldwide, so please take a good look through it. Now for the 16th time, have a great year!

IAGTO Asia Golf Tourism Convention We held our first Asia Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) at The Mines Resort & Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which was a tremendous success, with over 400 delegates and many new members from 18 countries in the Asia Pacific region. Over 6000 individual meetings took place between 138 buyers and 243 suppliers and there is no doubt that the staging of the AGTC is an important step in sustaining the growth of golf tourism to the Asia Pacific region. We are delighted that the 2nd AGTC will be taking place in Thailand, in the Award winning golf destination of Pattaya, at the Royal Cliff Hotel, from 29 April to 2 May 2013. The Chonburi province in which Pattaya is located boasts more than 20 golf courses nearly all of which are less than 50-60 minutes drive from Pattaya itself. Situated on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand and a 90-minute drive from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Pattaya is a multicultural city and provides an experience unlike any other location in the world.

IAGTO North America Golf Tourism Convention Mississippi is the genuine Blues & Golf destination, as we found out during the 4th IAGTO North America Convention (NAC) in June 2012. Some operators took the Blues & Golf trail down from Memphis through Tunica and Natchez whilst others toured the cluster of great courses on the Gulf Coast - a stretch of some 45 minutes driving time west to east with the closest courses only 45 minutes from New Orleans. The Convention was attended by 204 delegates including golf resorts, golf clubs, hotels, inbound operators and tourist boards from North American golf destinations, and golf tour operators from around the world. This proved to be a landmark moment for Tourism Mississippi and the Gulf Coast CVB in their efforts to harness the power of golf tour operators both at home and abroad to drive high revenue tourism to golf destinations throughout the state. The 5th NAC will take place at the Marriott Marco Island near Naples in Florida from 26-29 June 2013 and is expected to be the most important golf tourism event of the year for the North American market.

IAGTO Review

IAGTO Mid Year Convention Our Mid Year Convention provides a unique opportunity for a different mix of 100 golf tour operators and suppliers to meet together and discuss industry issues over the period of 3 or 4 days. Gran Canaria were the hosts in 2012 and did an outstanding job of showcasing their immaculate golf destination and cultural heritage.

International Golf Travel Market The 15th IGTM returned to Vilamoura in The Algarve in Portugal for what was to become probably the most successful show of the current era, with more than 12,000 pre-scheduled appointments taking place between golf tour operators and exhibitors. The 2013 IGTM will take place in Costa Daurada in Spain from 11-14 November.

Golf Fam Trips IAGTO’s golf tour operators participated in many familiarisation trips around the world with a record number in Asia took place in Sanya, Hainan Island, Thailand, Vietnam, Jakarta and Malaysia following our 1st AGTC. In Europe Sweden hosted their first Fam trip along with Cannes, The Azores, Northern Ireland, Dublin, The Lisbon Coast and Lithuania. In the USA, Mississippi and Orlando hosted a Fam trip. Whilst in other regions of the world Columbia held their first Fam trip along with Abu Dhabi, Puerto Rico and The Dominican Republic.

Golf & Spa Report In 2012 IAGTO published a review of Golf & Spa, looking at how Spa & Wellness offers can be used to increase golf tourism sales and deliver an even better experience for the visiting golfer. The report highlighted the importance of making spa facilities accessible to all golfers and offering discounted golf specific treatments for pre or post round relaxation. It was clear that the presentation of spa facilities to golfers can have a major impact on their overall experience and their assessment of the venue. With over 32,000 downloads of this report, IAGTO has committed to researching and publishing more industry reviews in 2013 and undertaking the most important annual golf tourism survey.

Online Contracting At the request of delegates attending the North America Convention, IAGTO has developed an advanced online contracting service on the members’ section of the IAGTO website. This enables member golf resorts, golf courses, hotels and other suppliers to contract direct with member golf tour operators with minimal administration and effort. This has been achieved without losing the ability to offer different contracts to different operators, with the same safeguards employed in the IAGTO Net Rate Library. Golf resorts including Pebble Beach Resorts, Kiawah Island and Punta Cana Golf Resort have begun to use this system for the majority of their golf tour operator contracting.

Sustainable Golf Tourism In November 2012, IAGTO and the Golf Environment Organization (GEO), the international non-profit dedicated to sustainable golf, announced a new partnership, working together to support and promote sustainability in golf tourism around the world. The experience of golf is always better when integrated with landscape, culture and community, which means that positive environmental and social actions can have a direct bearing on the growth of golf visitors and the quality of their experience. By working together, IAGTO and GEO aim to bring new value to the most active resorts and destinations – helping them to connect their sustainability driven supply with awareness and growth in demand. By connecting with GEO, we can add more value to our members and golf destinations, promoting practical and relevant international guidelines for golf development and management; streamlined and easy-to-use business support programmes; and new communications channels to give messages more reach. Sustainable golf is a vital area of focus for the future, and GEO is the only organization entirely dedicated to helping the industry represent and improve their actions, bringing industry-leading experience, widespread connections, tailor-made programmes and the ecolabel for golf.

IAGTO Awards

IAGTO Awards 13th IAGTO Awards Ceremony The Tivoli Marina Hotel, Vilamoura provided a magnificent setting for the 13th annual IAGTO Awards on the last night of the International Golf Travel Market on 15th November 2012. The convenience of the location ensured that more than 1100 delegates were able to attend this glittering event. Since Arnold Palmer accepted our first Honorary Award back in 2000, we feel privileged that the top names in golf have taken the time to acknowledge the importance of golf travel and reflect upon their own experiences of travelling the globe playing golf as well as designing golf courses we all love to play. Tony Jacklin travelled to Portugal to accept the 13th Honorary Award in person which was warmly appreciated by the golf tourism industry as he is widely recognised as one of the greats of European golf. He was the most successful British player of his generation, winning two major championships as well as being the most successful European Ryder Cup captain in history often remembered for being the catalyst that reignited the spark back into this historic competition. It is events like the Ryder Cup and characters such as Tony that do so much to persuade people to take up the game of golf and travel with a set of golf clubs. The IAGTO Honorary Award is an acknowledgement of the importance of great champions and personalities to the growth of our industry worldwide. Once again IAGTO’s Giles Greenwood did a tremendous job as the Awards Master of Ceremonies where he presented the ten golf resort, destination and supplier awards in front of an expectant audience. Terre Blanche Resort picked up the European Golf Resort of the Year Award, with Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort in Florida and Mazagan Beach and Golf Resort in Morocco taking the Awards for North America and the Rest of the World. More than 150 destinations were nominated for the Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year Award, voted for by the journalists of the International Golf Travel Writers Association. Veneto; an exciting new golf tourism destination with enormous potential proved victorious, and the Veneto Region Tourism Councillor, Mr Marino Finozzi as well as representatives from Golf in Veneto gave a very passionate thank you. IAGTO’s golf tour operators, now numbering 485 in 61 countries, voted for the Established Golf Destination of the Year Awards which were deservedly won by Vietnam, Dubai, Dominican Republic, Monterey County and Gran Canaria. Lastly, our IAGTO Outstanding Supplier of the year award remained in Portugal for the second year with Onyria Resorts winning this very popular award. Congratulations to all shortlisted destinations and all winning resorts, golf countries, regions and companies for working so hard to deliver the best possible experience to the visiting golf traveller and we look forward to seeing you all in the Costa Daurada for the next instalment of the IAGTO Awards. 16

Al Badia Golf Club

An extraordinary golf course Rise to the championship challenge of the Al Badia golf course - par 72 and 7,303 yards. Capturing the character and beauty of Arabia, the 18-hole Al Badia course was designed on an oasis theme by internationally-renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones II. The championship course features abundant water, rivers of sand and plants indigenous to the Arabian Gulf. Water moves throughout the course. The layout incorporates 11 lakes, several smaller ponds, streams and numerous cascading waterfalls. Strategically, water is used for lateral hazards as well as carry hazards on 12 of the holes. The “rivers of sand concept adds another layer of texture to the design - providing a visual extension of the lakes and streams. These sand areas provide visually crisp playing surfaces that, unlike bodies of water, give a golfer the opportunity to recover from an errant shot. With native Arabian plants and trees, the design also focuses on environmental responsibility - evident through the use of Paspalum grass, specifically SeaIsle 2000 on the greens and SeaIsle I on the tees and fairways. Providing a challenging round for the seasoned golfer, Al Badia is also welcoming for the recreational player. Four sets of tees are featured on each hole - with most offering a variety of teeing angles. The course can be played from the maximum 7,303 yards, for championship players, down to 5,398 yards for newer players.

Joburg Tourism

Joburg Tourism Golfing in the City of Gold Johannesburg is traditionally one of South Africa’s lesser-known golfing destinations, yet of late has started attracting more and more interest amongst the golfing fraternity. Perhaps it’s the fascination with the history of the city, often called “Egoli”, which means “Place of Gold” in Zulu as gold was discovered in Johannesburg in 1886. The region then became the biggest gold-producer in the world and soon after that, in 1905 the world’s largest diamond, the Cullinan diamond, was found. Hence the name Joburg Gems was coined, made up of Joburg’s finest golf courses and hotel establishments on offer for locals and internationals alike to enjoy.

Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club

It could even be a fascination with the beauty of the city, as Johannesburg is the world’s largest man-made forest, with an estimated 10 million trees. You certainly won’t feel as if you are in the middle of Africa’s most powerful commercial centre, and South Africa’s financial capital, when playing on any of Jozi’s 32 beautiful parkland layout courses. Bryanston Country Club

Perhaps it’s the great year-round weather with minimal windless days and a year-round average of 8.7 hours of sunshine per day, or because the golf ball travels so much further at altitude – golfers simply love playing golf in Jozi. More than likely, the reason why golfers are requesting a night or two in Johannesburg either at the beginning or end of their trip to South Africa is the absolutely superb golfing facilities that are extremely cost-effective and value for money. A round at a top course in Johannesburg costs approximately 30 euros for the green fees!

Tower Links Golf Club Tower Links has long been considered as one of the most natural golf courses in the Emirates, with as many as 11 out of the 18 holes meandering around a mangrove reserve. Not only does the reserve provide a natural and safe habitat to many aquatic and bird species, but it also presents new golfing challenges to test the skill level of every player. The combination of the mangrove reserve, green golf course and expanses of sandy waste areas make Tower Links Golf Club an unforgettable experience for all who come to test their skills. The 18-hole course, which is now in its eighth year of operation, features a fully-floodlit driving range, putting and chipping greens as well as a specific teaching area. The course measures 7,199 yards from the professional tees and caters to golfers of all standards, as holes feature four tee boxes to provide golfers of varying abilities the opportunity to enjoy their round. For those who like to beat the summer heat, Tower Links offers the opportunity to golf both day and night, as the back nine – holes 10 to 18 – are floodlit. Floodlit golf is a must-try for any golfer and provides an extra dimension to your golfing experience when visiting the UAE. If you are not a golfer then you need not worry; the club features a fully-equipped spa and gymnasium where you can relieve the stress of life or sculpt that body back into shape.

Carnoustie Country

Carnoustie Country Welcome to a natural, historic golfing paradise Carnoustie Country, on Scotland’s east coast, is a golfers’ paradise. With 30 golf courses within a 40-minute drive of Carnoustie Country’s jewel in the crown - the Open venue, Carnoustie Championship - there’s no shortage of fabulous places to play or friendly clubhouses to relax in at the end of the day. Over the years, the very best golfers in the world have competed on Carnoustie Country’s courses, among them Henry Cotton, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus, Paul Lawrie, Padraig Harrington and top British women’s golfer, and Carnoustie Country Ambassador, Catriona Matthew. “I’ve wonderful memories of the games I’ve played on Carnoustie Country courses,” says Catriona, who was one of the top competitors in the Ricoh Women’s British Open when it was held in Carnoustie for the first time in 2011. “For those who want a true challenge, Carnoustie Championship is famous for its ability to test and hone golfing skills.” Many visiting golfers describe their first experience of Carnoustie Championship as a “dream come true” but it’s only one of many memorable links courses in the area. The Open qualifying courses of Montrose Medal, Panmure and Monifieth Medal cling to the dramatic coastline of the county of Angus, while across the impressive Tay Estuary lies another Open qualifier, Scotscraig. Further inland, there’s an abundance of glorious parkland courses, such as the immaculate Blairgowrie Rosemount, the beautifully tree-lined Downfield in Dundee and the picturesque heathland courses of Alyth and Kirriemuir, which are overlooked by majestic mountains. If that’s not enough, Carnoustie Country is also within easy travelling distance of the golf courses at St Andrews, Gleneagles and Donald Trump’s newly-opened course on the Aberdeenshire coast, Trump International Golf Links. In fact, we reckon Carnoustie Country marks the halfway point!

Beautiful scenery is plentiful 42

Carnoustie Country

Carnoustie Country’s location is one of the reasons it’s becoming an increasingly-popular destination for short golfing breaks and golfing holidays. Dundee has its own airport with direct flights from London City, Birmingham and Belfast. Located in the heart of Carnoustie Country, it is only 20 minutes from Carnoustie Championship itself. And at little over an hour’s drive from Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports, with flights from most UK airports, Europe and the USA, Carnoustie Country is easily accessible to golfers from all over the world. In addition, the area is well served by the national road and rail networks. Getting here is easy - it’s persuading golfers that it’s time to go home that can be the problem! There’s a fabulous choice of accommodation in Carnoustie Country, with somewhere to suit all budgets, from four-star hotels to top-class B&Bs, and from self-catering lodges to budget bunkhouses. But no matter where golfers stay, they can be sure of one thing - a warm welcome. Widely known as “the Cradle of Golf”, Carnoustie Country’s golfing heritage stretches back to the very earliest days of the game. This is where golf clubs were first swung, where many of the rules of the game were devised and where many of the first golf tournaments were held.

Glamis Castle

Celebrations have been taking place throughout 2012 to mark 450 years of golf on Montrose Links, where Montrose Medal is the fiftholdest golf course in the world, while Carnoustie Ladies Golf Club is the oldest functioning ladies golf club in the world. In fact, in recognition of our golfing heritage, the World Hickory Open Championship was held at Monifieth and Carnoustie Burnside in October 2012 and attracted golfers from across the globe.

Many of our historic courses were designed by golf’s legendary architects, chief among them being Old Tom Morris and James Braid. However, there are also a number of newer courses designed by some of today’s top golf course designers, such as Drumoig, Glenisla and Strathmore Rannaleroch. As well as being a wonderful environment for golf, there’s a host of other activities and experiences awaiting visitors to Carnoustie Country. Restaurants, pubs and bistros serving delicious, fresh Angus produce, excellent fishing, a wide range of shops, vast expanses of hill-walking country, mountain bike trails, bustling marinas, busy harbours, historic castles, abbeys and mansions, award-winning museums, historic towns, quaint villages, miles of sandy beaches - and a fascinating history that’s still evident today. The Bronze-Age Picts left behind their standing stones, intricately-carved monuments which are scattered across Angus. Arbroath Abbey, site of the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath, dominates the town’s skyline. Glamis Castle, as mentioned in Shakespeare’s Macbeth and childhood home of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, is one of Scotland’s top visitor attractions. RRS Discovery, the ship that carried Captain Scott on his first expedition to the South Pole, is berthed in Dundee.

Arbroath Abbey

The City of Dundee is home to several courses, including Camperdown, Downfield and Ballumbie - and can boast a lot more besides. There’s a bustling city centre with excellent shopping, visitor attractions and entertainment, including theatres, cinemas and nightclubs. In addition, the city is currently undergoing an exciting transformation which will reunite Dundee with the River Tay and will include the V&A Museum, Scotland’s International Design Centre. 43

Carnoustie Country

Deil’s Head, Arbroath Cliffs

Carnoustie Country’s scenery is another of its secret weapons. The beaches, cliffs, mountains, forests and rivers of Angus provide the stunning background to many Carnoustie Country courses - and are also a fabulous environment for getting away from it all or trying out a new activity. How about gorge walking, mountain biking, canoeing or horse riding? On a golfing break in Carnoustie Country, there’s no shortage of things to do or places to go when not on the golf course! Great golf, breathtaking views and, of course, a good time are all part of the package!

Carnoustie Country golf courses The 30 links, inland and parkland golf courses within a 40-minute drive of Carnoustie Championship can test the skills of even low-handicap players to the limit but are also perfect for golfers who take a more relaxed approach to their game, making Carnoustie Country the perfect location for a golfing break. And, no matter where golfers play - or what their handicap is - they all agree on one point… Golf in Carnoustie Country is golf in its natural, historic environment. Often referred to as “the toughest links course in the world”, with its legendary bunkers and testing final three holes, as well as its immaculately-maintained fairways and greens and a new golf centre with excellent visitor facilities, Carnoustie Championship is one of the world’s must-play golf courses. Established in 1889, Blairgowrie Rosemount is one of Scotland’s finest inland golf courses. With luxurious green fairways set amidst pine, birch and heather, the course hugs the natural landscape, providing a satisfying, enjoyable golfing challenge for golfers of all abilities.

The 18th green at Blairgowrie Rosemount

Monifieth Medal is a testing combination of parkland and links, with gently-undulating ground flanked on many holes by rows of pine trees and deep bunkers - leaving golfers wanting to return again and again.

Scotscraig The 12th at Panmure

With tight fairways and compact, undulating greens, Panmure is much admired by golfers from home and overseas. In fact, the legendary Ben Hogan included the 6th at Panmure in a list of his top 18 holes! Scotscraig in Tayport, like Monifieth and Panmure, is an Open qualifier course but that’s not its only claim to fame. It’s also the 13th-oldest golf club in the world. Although close to the sea, an abundance of trees line many of the fairways and, with more than a touch of the heathland about it, Scotscraig can provide a challenge to even the most experienced golfers.

With its panoramic views of Cairngorms National Park, Edzell is one of the most scenic golf courses in Scotland. It is renowned for its well-maintained fairways and greens – and for being a straightforward, highly-enjoyable course. Kirriemuir, with avenues of woods, gorse and broom surrounding lush, undulating fairways with impeccable greens, is further proof that there’s much more to Carnoustie Country than links golf. Situated on the edge of the Grampian Mountains, this James Braid-designed course is a perfect example of heathland/parkland golf. The generous fairways and rolling greens of Strathmore Rannaleroch ensure this course is popular with golfers of all levels of skill and expertise. And, as the course overlooks the beautiful Vale of Strathmore, there’s the added bonus of a fabulous backdrop.

Lisboa Golf Coast

Lisboa Golf Coast Top-quality golf in striking landscapes around Portugal’s vibrant capital The Lisbon region is the perfect golf destination. The tranquillity and satisfaction to be found on the greens are matched only by the quality, number and diversity of Lisbon’s golf courses. The region’s natural features are a major attraction for this inspiring and invigorating sport. The nearly year-round sunny and temperate climate combined with a striking landscape of ocean, beaches, rivers, cliffs, dunes and lakes make this a truly exhilarating experience.

Penha Longa

Over 20 golf courses can be found along Estoril and Sintra, the Oeste region, and Setúbal/Tróia. All courses are top notch – the only difficulty is selecting one. Lisbon is much more than outstanding golf courses; it’s an intimate personal experience waiting to be discovered.

City highlights The historical quarters of central Lisbon are perfect for visitors to the Portuguese capital to experience for themselves. Their culture, history, architecture and the people are fundamental aspects of Lisbon’s identity, and those who explore them will discover their own personal map. The Bairro Alto is one of the most characterful and attractive quarters of the city. Traditional restaurants nestle alongside cosy bookshops, tea rooms, funky design shops and the boutiques of the most respected Portuguese fashion designers. The Bairro Alto is a place where people meet in an eclectic and multicultural atmosphere. From Bairro Alto, stroll down to the Chiado, the sophisticated hub for the city’s young people, artists and intellectuals. The Chiado is an area of iconic cafés including “A Brasileira”, art schools, theatres and of living history.

And strolling down again you will find the Baixa, the city’s traditional shopping district where visitors can stroll around the streets and find dozens of shops offering a wide range of temptations. Rua Augusta is the main artery of the Baixa, leading north from Terreiro do Paço (known as Black Horse Square by the English) to the beautiful square of Rossio (Praça Dom Pedro V). Just north of Rossio, discover Avenida da Liberdade, which in the 19th century was the favourite promenade for the Lisbon élite. Today, the Avenida is home to exclusive international boutiques to tempt and inspire. The tram is one of the most famous and typical forms of transport in Lisbon. From the Baixa to the top of the hill in Alfama, you will find typical Lisbon streets and alleys and be able to discover the unique and extraordinary views of the city and river – either take a traditional tram or explore Alfama on foot. By tram along the riverside you can reach Belém, the neighbourhood with the most imposing symbols of the city – Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and the Torre de Belém – both classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Although these two monuments were built in the 16th century, they are located near a modern cultural centre – Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB) – where you can find art exhibitions and take a walk along the gardens. Not to be missed in Belém is the “pastel de nata”, a traditional and delicious pastry. The Parque das Nações (Nations Park) – the riverside venue for Expo98 – is ideal for all ages. Located in the eastern part of Lisbon, this extensive cultural, entertainment, residential and corporate complex is a focus of the city’s cultural life. The gardens along the river frame the facilities, including the Pavilhão Atlântico (Atlantic Pavillion), venue for concerts and major international sports events, and the new Casino de Lisboa. The Oceanário de Lisboa (Aquarium), not to be missed, and the Pavilhão do Conhecimento (Knowledge Pavillion) are other attractions in this unique part of Lisbon. Take a ride on the cable car offering breathtaking views of the river and the city along its one kilometre circuit.

Night life Lisbon is an extremely lively city. There is always something happening, 365 days a year. But it is at night that the main doors of entertainment open, with whole neighbourhoods dedicated to fun and partying in good company. Join in and help maintain the tradition of night life entertainment into the early morning. The Bairro Alto – or the Bairro as locals call it – has a unique tradition in the history of Lisbon night life. Always changing, the narrow cobbled streets fill with people every night, especially to Fridays and Saturdays as everybody is taking the best possible advantage of the weekend. The number of restaurants, venues and the highly diversified clientele make the Bairro Alto a mixed and friendly place to be. Everybody is welcome, from young people in search of lively cocktail bars, to older customers who seek out quiet bars with good music. In Bairro Alto and Alfama you can also hear Fado, a vocal music unique to Lisbon. You can find numerous Fado houses, from the most formal to the most informal where everybody sings spontaneously. 51

Lisboa Golf Coast

The riverside The riverside areas offer lively nightlife and the most well known bars, dance venues and clubs are on Avenida 24 de Julho, and in the Santos area. In the Docas, from Alcântara to Santa Apolónia, you will find plenty of entertainment, right next to the river. These areas, which are also lively during the day, offer the perfect backdrop for an enjoyable evening. Besides dancing and enjoying the unique atmosphere, you can also listen to concerts or to the best international DJs. In this riverside area, you will also find excellent restaurants.

Shopping Shopping in Lisbon is really worthwhile. In addition to the many international brand boutiques, designer shops and shopping centres, you will also find best quality Portuguese articles to bring home. Most of the shops are located in the Baixa quarter and Chiado area. But, to find the most exclusive international brands, try another traditional shopping area, Avenida da Liberdade. Antique shops are generally concentrated in Rua Dom PedroV, Rua do Alecrim and Rua de São Bento.

Gastronomy Lisbon is the ideal destination for good food lovers. You will find restaurants with typical food and excellent service, which is no wonder since good food is widely appreciated by the Portuguese themselves. Lisbon offers a wide range of typical dishes and excellent wines to be enjoyed at its many restaurants. Because of its location by the sea, Lisbon is ideal to try delicious fish dishes. “Bacalhau” (dried, salted cod) prepared in a 1001 ways is the national Portuguese dish. Steaks (bifes) are among the most popular dishes, “Bife à Café” being the most typical in Lisbon. Walking through the streets in the Autumn or Winter you will find the famous and delicious roast chestnuts – sold in the streets. Among the desserts and cakes offered everywhere, the “pasteis de Belem”, in particular, are a must. Made from a special recipe that belonged to a friar from the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, they have been a delight to Portuguese taste for over 160 years.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites / historic sites One of the most imposing symbols of the city is here – the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, the construction of which was started in 1501 by King Manuel I and finished a century later. Overlooking the magnificent Praça do Império, the monument is an outstanding example of late Gothic and Renaissance architecture and is regarded as one of Lisbon’s finest landmarks. Royal, religious, naturalist and nautical decorative elements combine to create a building that is considered the jewel of the distinctively Portuguese Manueline style, and it has been recognised as a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO. Also in Belém, on the river bank, is another marvellous Manueline monument, again classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Torre de Belém. Designed in the 16th century by Francisco Arruda, the Torre de Belém is a square tower with a polygonal bastion facing the river Tagus.

Torre de Belém

The exterior facades, balconies and verandas are covered with abundant decoration, with Arab and Venetian influences which contrasts with the austerely decorated interior. The organic elements of the Manueline style – such as plants and animals - are represented in many different forms and the Torre de Belém has the first sculptural portrayal of an African animal, in this case a rhinoceros. Oeste Two of the most important National Monuments, both commemorating landmarks in Portuguese history and both recognised as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO are here: Mosteiro da Batalha and the Mosteiro de Alcobaça. Sintra Sintra is an inexhaustible attraction. The perfect symbiosis between nature and its man made heritage led to its UNESCO World Heritage status in the Cultural Landscape category in 1995. The town has been adored over the years by artists and writers from all over the world. The passion for the town reached its peak in the 19th century, in the heart of the romantic era. Poets such as Lord Byron, who called it a “Garden of the Earthly Paradise”, and Portuguese writers such as Eça de Queiroz, who described it in many passages of his works, helped create an aura of the town, which is theirs by right.

Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Club

Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Club Lumine leads golf tourism drive on Spain’s Costa Dorada Located on Spain’s stunning Costa Dorada, just 40 minutes south of Barcelona near the historic town of Tarragona and seaside port of Cambrils, Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Club is a stateof-the-art Spanish resort that is fast gaining a reputation for being one of Europe’s premier golfing destinations. 18th hole on the Hills Course

Although still in its infancy, the facility has already been showered with praise from international media and industry experts alike as to its intriguing vision and strategic development. Blessed with a broad variety of attractions, including 45 holes of championship golf, a variety of hotel options to suit all budgets, a first-class events and conference centre, restaurants serving modern Mediterranean cuisine and a magnificent Beach Club, Lumine offers a luxurious haven in which to unwind and get away from the stresses of daily life.

Under the management of the world’s leading management company, Troon Golf, this allencompassing resort offers the finest in service and Spanish hospitality and is fully equipped to welcome golfing groups, families and business travellers. With two international airports, Reus (10-minute drive) and Barcelona, Lumine can be easily accessed from anywhere in Europe and further afield. The north-east coastline also plays host to a beautiful Mediterranean climate of long, hot summers and short, mild winters and benefits from a steady sea breeze that helps to cool the heat on summer evenings.

45 holes of golfing paradise Lumine is a true golfing haven, with 45 holes that offer a wide variety of challenges for players of all skill levels. With Troon Golf at the helm alongside dedicated staff, guests are guaranteed pristine course conditioning, smooth and fast greens alongside first-class service and hospitality. The three Lumine courses are the first in Spain to be awarded the Audubon International Gold Signature Sanctuary Certificate, regarded worldwide as the kite mark for the most environmentally-aware leisure developments. The flagship golf course at Lumine is the Greg Norman-designed Lakes Course. Opened in 2008 with a Sergio Garcia Pro-Am, its reputation is now such that it has been chosen as a venue for the second stage of the European Tour Qualifying School for the next two years, starting in November 2011. The Great White Shark’s fins are certainly all over this challenging, technical test that unfolds over the colourful network of water hazards winding around the Sèquia Major wetlands. 56

Hills Course

Using the natural setting, the two-time Open Champion has created a unique expression of golf’s tests and rewards. The Lakes has also hosted the PGA of Europe’s prestigious annual fourball event, with that body formally promoting the resort in partnership with the Tourist Board of the Tarragona Provincial Government. Lumine’s second championship course, The Hills, is topographically very different to its sister course. Designed by Spanish course architect Alfonso Vidaor, this undulating layout weaves its way through picturesque pine woodlands, olive groves, natural quarries and rocky outcrops, and puts a precedent on shot shaping and course management. Those who choose to play this enthralling layout will also be treated to incredible views over the Mediterranean Sea. Completing the golfing experience at Lumine is another Greg Norman-designed course. The Ruins would arguably fit comfortably into a ranking of the Continent’s top nine-hole layouts and is appropriately named after the traces of Roman archaeology that form some of the defining features on the layout. This exquisite course is blessed with a five-hole stretch that descends down a sweeping hillside – starting at the short, par-4 3rd with its shelf-like fairway cut into the slope and culminating in a plateau green with fine views of PortAventura and beyond.

Ruins Course

For those looking to home their skills during their stay, a team of professionals at the Lumine Golf Academy are on hand with numerous group courses for beginners right through to the more accomplished golfer. A Junior Academy also introduces the game in a fun and relaxed environment.

Meetings and events The Conventions Centre at Lumine is one of the largest in Europe and provides the perfect location for meetings or events. The facility has five main rooms which can be divided into as many as 18 multi-function spaces and hold up to 4,000 people. Fully equipped with the latest audio and visual technology, it has all that is required for business meetings. This was reflected when the PGAs of Europe opted to hold its annual Training Summit & Coaching Seminar there earlier this year.

Pool at Lumine Beach Club

Once you step off the final green, a wealth of world-class facilities, including two fully-equipped clubhouses and the luxurious Lumine Beach Club lie in wait. Situated on 1km of golden Spanish beach and set seductively in the pine-clad hillsides above the sweeping bay of Tarragona’s Playa Del Llarga, it offers the perfect mix of style, relaxation, excitement and fine dining.

With nine swimming pools laid out on a series of terraces with luxury beds and loungers, this has become a fashionable venue for a trendy young crowd as well as families and couples. The Beach Club also provides the location for the award-winning Lumine Restaurant. Offering superb Mediterranean cuisine, head chef Eduardo Cuesta has already become somewhat of legend in the area.

Surrounding region and attractions Beyond the serenity of the resort, the Costa Dorada region is brimming with leisure, cultural and historic attractions. Spain’s largest theme park and one of country’s biggest entertainment attractions, PortAventura, lies just 5km away. To the north lies the Priorat wine region, the birthplace of exquisite reds that many wine writers and collectors consider to be Spain’s most elite. The historic town of Tarragona is also just a 15-minute drive from Lumine. With 2,200 years of history and a Roman heritage preserved in dozens of monuments and architectural remains, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Essential Roman highlights include the amphitheatre, the circus depicting the route of early chariot racing, a 1km stretch of original walls and fortifications from the 2nd century BC, and a temple with its surviving portico. If it’s bustling nightlife or seaside sophistication you are looking for, then the choice is yours; with both the busy resort of Salou and the more peaceful marina port of Cambrils just a few minutes’ drive away. Both have superb beaches, facilities and some of the finest restaurants in the region. For those wishing to experience the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona, it is just a 100km drive up the coast. So why not combine a golfing holiday at Lumine with a trip to the Nou Camp stadium to see the likes of Messi, Xavi and Iniesta or take in the iconic Gaudi architecture? With such a fantastic location, world-class golf, expansive leisure facilities and a breadth of local attractions it’s time to let Lumine surpass your expectations. The Ugadale Hotel - modern comfort with historic charm Once regarded as the pinnacle of luxury accommodation in the west of Scotland, the Ugadale Hotel has been restored to its former glory and serves as the centrepiece of The Village at Machrihanish Dunes. Since the hotel’s grand re-opening in February 2012, it has already been named “Golf Hotel of the Year” at the 2012 Scottish Hotel Awards! Twenty-two stunning guest rooms and suites pamper guests in an atmosphere of casual elegance and modern amenities graced with historic charm.

Machrihanish Dunes

The Royal Hotel - the crown of Campbeltown A mere five miles from Machrihanish in the heart of historic Campbeltown, a second hotel has been restored to its former majesty. The Royal Hotel, with a prime location overlooking bustling Campbeltown Harbour, serves as the “in-town” option for visitors to Machrihanish Dunes. Re-opened in May 2012, The Royal ushers visitors back to an era when Campbeltown was a thriving fishing and shipbuilding town - as well as the malt whisky capital of the world. Within the hotel, you’ll find all the conveniences and amenities you’d expect in a modern luxury accommodation, steeped in old-world elegance. In addition to its 23 sumptuously-appointed guest rooms, The Royal also boasts the lively Black Sheep Pub, and elegant dining at the Harbourview Grille. Complimentary shuttle service is available for guests who fancy a visit to the Ugadale Hotel & Cottages, Serenity Spa, the Old Clubhouse Pub or Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club.

“The world’s most natural golf course” In Scotland, true links golf courses are not created, they are born of the land. Of the 275 acres on which Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club sits, only seven were disturbed in creating this thrilling 18-hole adventure. Only the tees and greens were shaped and seeded under the watchful eye of renowned course designer David McLay Kidd; thus the fairways you tread today are just as nature intended them. The championship-calibre links at Machrihanish Dunes was named one of the UK’s Top 100 Golf Courses by Golf World, and the No. 1 Eco Golf Course in the world by ABTA Magazine. The course offers you a rare opportunity to create and craft golf shots just as the men of Scotland did centuries ago, when they conceived the game. For the golfer who accepts the invitation and challenge, the reward is a truly unforgettable experience.

What’s more, guests at Machrihanish Dunes are within a pitching wedge of Machrihanish Golf Club (where guests receive a reduced rate), a world top-100 course known for its prodigious challenges and possibly the most famous opening tee shot in all of golf. Guests are also just a short boat ride from the top courses of Northern Ireland and Scotland, including Royal Portrush and Turnberry. 61

Machrihanish Dunes

Named 2010 Hotel of the Year (Small Hotel/Guest House) by Golf Tourism Scotland, the Ugadale Cottages provide smart accommodation in two spacious and well-appointed bedrooms (each with its own private bath), plus a kitchen, dining area and living room. The cottages have been thoughtfully configured to perfectly accommodate visiting golfers - as well as families, walkers, and other visitors to the area.

The Old Clubhouse Pub The Old Clubhouse Restaurant & Pub has been the site of good times and warm welcomes for more than 100 years. Originally the clubhouse of the Machrihanish Golf Club back in the days of Old Tom Morris (who designed that famous course), it is now a cosy and lively pub that serves full Scottish breakfasts, sumptuous lunches and gourmet dinners, before becoming the site of nightly revelry for locals and Village guests alike. A place to unwind after a round of golf or to relax with family and friends, the Old Clubhouse is enjoyed by all who pass through its doors.

Oristano

Oristano Enjoy nature, history and golf in Sardinia’s smallest province Oristano is the smallest Sardinian province and offers a rich heritage away from the crowds, together with interesting shopping, cafÊs and the friendly social life of its capital city, also called Oristano, where locals meet at night in the Piazza Eleonora. Ancient civilisations were drawn to this south-west area of Sardinia with its diverse landscape of pine forests, lagoons, sheltered sandy beaches, mountains and precipitous cliffs; the first settlements on the Sinis peninsula date back over two thousand years. In medieval times, Oristano vied for power over Sardinia, waging wars against the other Sardinian kingdoms which culminated in the attempt to conquer the whole island in the late 14th century. Reminders of its turbulent history include the 19-metre-high Tower of St Christophoros, built in 1290 and the most striking remaining evidence of the old walls. Today, this still untouched and unknown area provides a welcome escape from the crowds for visitors, who can also discover its culture, traditions, history and excellent Sardinian cuisine and local wines. Around the city, the lagoons and the ponds are a natural habitat for pink flamingos while offshore island Mal di Ventre is home to thousands of sea birds and its underwater life is a haven for divers. Not far from Oristano city lies Is Arenas, which means sand in the local language, an appropriate name for this long, pristine beach which offers breathtaking sunsets over the sea.

Is Arenas Golf Course 64

Oristano

Is Arenas Golf Course But Is Arenas is not only beach and sea. Here, in the heart of Sardinia’s west coast, you will find one of Europe’s most spectacular golf courses, both from a technical and a location perspective. An 18 hole, par 71 championship golf course designed by acclaimed American architects Robert Von Hagge, Smelek & Baril, it is set in a 750 hectare (1,850 acre) private pine forest, not far from the beach, and measures over 6,300 metres (6,890 yards). The course was conceived to blend in with the surrounding environment, with its natural dunes, lush forest and four lakes. Each hole is framed by pine and juniper trees, while the course design provides challenges for every golfer. The signature 17th hole offers an extraordinary view over a 6km (3.7 mile) stretch of uncontaminated sandy beach. The pine forest is an oasis which is home to birds, turtles and foxes; indeed, the turtle is the symbol of the club. Practice facilities comprise a three-hole executive course, a driving range with 40 covered bays, pitching and chipping greens with bunkers and two putting greens. Instruction is also available in group or individual clinics, with lessons available in Italian, French, English, Spanish and German. “If you play golf there is nothing better than to treat yourself to a lovely experience at Golf Is Arenas”, according to Robert Von Hagge, Smelek & Baril head architect Richard Baril. “All the natural elements that it offers – sand dunes, forest, water and an exceptional climate – are a perfect combination for a unique experience of golf playing. Is Arenas is an unlimited carpet of colours, fragrances and vital energies.”

Golf Hotel Is Arenas Adjacent to the course and surrounded by Is Arenas’ lush pine forest lies the five-star Golf Hotel Is Arenas. Guests enjoy exclusive green fee discounts and stay metres from the course. Set near a natural reserve, the resort complex incorporates the highest technology and energy-efficiency standards, its design inspired by the surrounding nature; buildings never rise above the vegetation and blend in with the forest. Architect and designer Lorenzo Bellini personally chose the natural interiors and building materials, which include Sardinian marble and ceiling chestnut beams. Most of the 58 rooms and suites feature an open space, a veranda, a private garden, a patio or a balcony. The elegant interiors are minimalist-style, with touches of purple. Golf family suites are villas set in the pine forest that can accommodate up to five people, perfect for families or groups of golfers. The hotel offers several restaurants and bars, serving food including traditional Sardinian dishes. Guests can also dedicate time to their wellbeing and “rediscover their inner selves” at the hotel’s Boutique Spa. Set in a natural location, it offers an innovative and holistic approach with its massages and treatments. Sardinia is a perfect location for families and children with its clean beaches and crystal-clear sea. Golf Hotel Is Arenas offers dedicated children’s activities in summer. Is Arenas is within easy reach of Sardinia’s main airports, with a driving time of between 75 and 110 minutes. 65

Sunset over the Jack Nicklaus II course

Jack Nicklaus II course 18 holes, par 72 designed by Jack Nicklaus II. A course of obstacles to avoid in order to keep your ball in play, set among ponds and deep grassy bunkers, and through trees. And with wide fairways so you can play your best strokes, before reaching the 18th hole, the signature hole for the course. This was the way Nicklaus liked to play. How about you?

Jack Nicklaus II course

Gary Player course 9 holes, par 36 designed by Gary Player. Texture: higher-levelled greens and deep bunkers, as in Scotland, with heathland, like in England. To play the course, you need to follow well-devised strategies. Trajectories: the pinnacle of Bedizzole’s church, a point of reference for the 3rd hole; the imposing line of the Drugolo’s Castle for the tee shot on the 1st hole, considered to be one of the most spectacular holes in Europe.

Son Gual Golf

Son Gual Golf Mallorca dream blossoms into one of Spain’s top golf courses When German businessman Adam Pamer was disappointed by the courses he played on holiday in Mallorca, he went about putting it right. He decided he would build a golf course that came up to the standards he and his friends would demand. Pamer, who had been visiting the island since 1974, bought a track of attractive land just east of the island’s capital, Palma, engaged the three-time German amateur champion, Thomas Himmel, to design a course and dug deep to the tune of €30 million to fund the development which opened The impressive putting green officially in October 2007. It features large lakes, 66 bunkers, 800 olive trees – some more than one thousand years old – wild flowers in the rough areas and vineyards in several areas around the course. The olive trees and vineyards have already borne fruit – literally – as the club has its own wine and olive oil. As investments go, it has proved sound. Just four years after Golf Son Gual opened, it was recognised by Golf World magazine as the number one on the island and ninth best in Spain – quite an achievement given that much of the competition has been around a lot longer. The magazine’s review stated: “When Golf World visited in June, we could not have been more impressed – hence the significant rise up the rankings. Son Gual could have hosted a European Tour event the following morning by doing nothing more than take out the white tee markers and send the pros off the tips…”

The elevated first tee sets the standard at Son Gual

72

Son Gual Golf

That is a stunning testimonial for a golf course prepared only for a normal day’s play for members and visitors, and the outstanding condition was clearly one of the reasons for Son Gual’s leap from 91st to 53rd position in Europe – an upward move of 38 places in just two years. In May 2009, it hosted the Mallorca Senior Open and received gushing praise from a number of the participants: former Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam even compared the greens to those at Augusta National.

The par three 17th

The 1991 Masters winner said: “It’s a bit like Augusta. There are a lot of slopes on the greens. You’ve got to get the ball on the right side of the hole – if you don’t you’ll be struggling. Miss it on the wrong side and you’re dead.” Compliments like that must have been music to the ears of Pamer and designer Himmel. And the Pamer family – Adam’s son Andreas is the club’s general manager – has refused to rest on its laurels and has continued to push the boundaries as far as customer satisfaction levels are concerned. Andreas explained: “From the very first day my father envisaged this golf course, the priority was to enhance the golfing experience, whether you were a member or just a day visitor. That was one of the reasons we instigated the 15-minute gap between tee-times. “We feel we have a championship course here but it is essential that a visit here can be enjoyed by all: low-handicappers or high-handicappers; golfer and non-golfers – which is why we also put such effort into the quality of the off-course experience too. “My father is very happy with the development of Son Gual and its positioning among other top European golf courses. But, at this stage, we cannot talk about the finished product, because we are still working hard on further projects to enhance the overall experience.” The outstanding off-course experience includes exceptional food, which can be experienced on an expansive terrace with wonderful views across the course. Tight planning regulations – “tight”, at least in Spanish terms – meant that initially a hotel was not a consideration on the site, but the burgeoning international status of Son Gual and the desire to boost the local economy may at least soften opposition in the near future as Pamer jnr confirmed.

73

Son Gual Golf

The well-protected green at the 7th

“We are currently negotiating the possibility of having either a small boutique hotel in the old palacio (a magnificent building which dates back to the early 20th century and currently houses greenkeeping equipment) or maybe a new-build hotel in the additional land at the back of Son Gual with one of the international hotel chains. But it is essential we don’t do anything which will impact negatively on the visitor experience here. That’s why we will be very careful about how we develop and won’t do it merely just so we can say ‘we have beds’. It needs to be a positive addition to the overall experience.” Big names are no strangers to Son Gual, with the course regularly hosting corporate events for the likes of Rolex, Mercedes Benz and Porsche. And the “big-name” visitors aren’t just in the guise of major brands – celebrities are also a regular sight. Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, who was born on the island, is a frequent visitor when his schedule allows, while another tennis legend, Boris Becker, has been seen walking the fairways. Spanish World Cup winner The 18th - a great closing hole and Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has also visited on more than one occasion, while a plethora of football pundits – including Jamie Redknapp, Andy Gray and Alan McInally – held an end-of-season golf day there. It is the relaxed attitude to the whole golf experience which makes Son Gual such a pleasure – though if the golf isn’t perfect, people won’t return. That they do speaks volumes. “The secret of our success isn’t really a secret,” smiled the affable Andreas Pamer. “We work constantly on the quality of the golf course and the service in the clubhouse and restaurant – and that is what everybody in our position should be looking to achieve. We aim to offer a high quality golf experience at fair prices with the best service. Plus, being on a wonderful sunshine island like Mallorca helps too…” Despite its impressive clientele and international appeal it remains, at heart, a family business. Other members of the Pamer family are present on a daily basis ensuring the standards are kept up. “Yes, it’s true that it remains a ‘hands-on’ family business,” added Pamer. “The whole family is involved in day-to-day running and this might also be a reason for our success, because we have a very personal relationship with our regular customers and especially all our members. “I hope to continue in the job for a few more years, because I love it. But I also think it is very important in the first few years to be there personally, controlling everything and setting the standards you wish to see maintained.” One could argue it’s “job done”, therefore. Proexport Colombia, the government entity in charge of promotion of international tourism, has helped national tour operators to position Colombia as a golf destination on the world stage. Internationally, Proexport has also deployed a tourism campaign to position the country as a major golf destination. The biggest advantage of selecting Colombia as a destination to play golf in is the incredible diversity of its climate and luscious landscapes. Colombia has eight regions, offering 365 days of golf in many different scenic locations. The regions are: Bogota, Centre, Antioquia, West, Atlantic Coast, the Coffee Triangle, Santander and Villavicencio. To fully take advantage of the diversity in these regions, golfers can enjoy a quick putt in the Andes Mountains, next to the Caribbean Sea, at the edge of the Chicamocha Canyon or nestled in the mountain coffee-scented farms in the Coffee Triangle, the landscapes of which have recently been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Colombia’s regions Colombia’s different regions offer a variety of contrasts turning the country into a magical destination for golfers who enjoy the beauty of the landscapes, the diversity of climates and the excellence of the courses, combined into perfection.

Antioquia Zone: Medellin The department of Antioquia is located in north-western Colombia. Its capital, Medellin, is the secondbiggest city in Colombia given its population size and strong economy. By the natural virtue of its pleasant climate, Medellin is called the “City of Eternal Spring”. Medellin is the ideal place for those who wish to experience history, unparalleled infrastructure and a climate conducive to year-round golf. Its golf courses demand good skills from all players to overcome the difficult hurdles the present, such as 30-metre-high trees, bunkers and lakes. West: Cali and Popayan The western zone includes the departments of Cauca and the Valle del Cauca, and their capital cities of Santiago de Cali and Popayan. Playing golf on these courses makes the game an unforgettable experience due to the topography and the vast expanses of land that allow the free execution of all kinds of strategic golf designs.

Among its holes, the par-4 14th and 16th both offer the option of taking a safe option or going for it, while the par-5 5th is described as a “fun hole” which offers up potential eagles for long and accurate drives. Get your camera out on the par-4 17th, said to be one of the most beautiful holes in the world of golf. The fairway is split by a beautiful meandering stream, housing exotic plants and flora, leading to a well-protected and undulating green. The magnificent backdrop and waterfall really adds to the enjoyment of this pristine golf course. East Course: An exceptional risk-reward layout, this is a parkland-style course with beautiful vibrant coloured landscaping. Designed to reward the intelligent golfer, the length, layout and toughness of this course offer the potential for major international tournaments. The magnificent golf course features impeccable fairways and greens, challenging elevation changes and an environment that enhances the essence of the local terrain, with natural grasses and wetlands and a sanctuary to provide a habitat to the numerous forms of wildlife and birds in the area. The par-3 5th has a pretty waterfall to the left and high-faced bunkers on the right, while the par-4 6th is an intimidating hole from its island tee, located across a board walk through native wetlands. The par-5 16th is a visually-beautiful hole offering much risk-reward strategy from its elevated tees, the highest point on the golf course, and a tempting 240-metre carry over the edge of the right-hand lake. 87

Golf – signature courses WORLD CUP COURSE – The masterpiece by legendary golf champion Jack Nicklaus This 7,294-yard course was the venue of the World Cup of Golf hosted in 1995, the first course in China to be accredited by the US PGA for major professional competitions, and many of the world’s greatest players – including Tiger Woods and Greg Norman – have played on it. It is also the winner of multiple international awards and heralded by the authoritative US golf publication Links as “one of the 10 most significant and influential courses of the last 20 years”. Mission Hills’ World Cup course is widely hailed as one of Asia’s best golfing experiences. GREG NORMAN COURSE – Asia’s most challenging courses This 7,228-yard offering at Mission Hills follows suit, as narrow fairways surrounded by long, native grasses and dense forest vegetation contribute to the layout’s reputation as one of the most-difficult courses in Asia. The front nine meanders through dramatic mountain ridges and hillsides, while the back nine lays gingerly in one of the property’s many lush valleys. OLAZABAL COURSE – The “Olympics of Golf” Host course for the 2007, 2008 and 2009 Omega Mission Hills World Cup, it measures 7,300 yards and boasts 155 bunkers (including 24 on hole 15 alone) – reflective of Olazabal’s reputation as a master with the sand wedge. Numerous majestic vistas of untouched jungle and natural flowing streams create outstanding backdrops throughout the golf course. The signature square tees, along with its undulating concave fairways, are two distinguishing features of this true championship course. In November 2012, one of the four World Golf Championships – the HSBC Champions – was played on the award-winning Olazabal Course. This significant event offered a prize fund of $7 million and presented golf fans in southern China an opportunity to witness the world’s best professionals. Looking to work on your game before hitting the links? The golf academies at Mission Hills Shenzhen and Dongguan offer the most personal, comprehensive and systematic approach to improve your game. Mission Hills has hosted more than 100 international tournaments, including the World Cup of Golf in 1995, 2007, 2008 and 2009. The storied championship is considered golf’s closest approximation to the Olympic Games and will be held at Mission Hills for a record 12 consecutive editions.

Signature volcanic golf courses include: BLACKSTONE – China’s premier tournament venue Golf Magazine’s Best New Asia Course for 2010, it weaves through a striking landscape of mature trees, thick jungle and expansive wetlands. Lava rock walls and village ruins created years ago remain as a testament to the site’s past. As a premier tournament venue, the Blackstone course provides extensive spectator mounding for fans and thrilling world-class golf capable of challenging the world’s greatest players. LAVA FIELD – Big and bold surrounded by black rock While similar in many respects to the Blackstone Course, with its irregular lines of turf and wild bunkering, Lava Fields presents an expansive and open look, featuring rolling waves of tall grasses in place of dense trees. Black rock and wild bunkering dominate the landscape like no other course in the world. THE VINTAGE – Traditional “lie-of-the-land” Golden Age golf course Patterned after courses built at the turn of the last century, this 7,363-yard course features a lie-of-the-land routing with tree-lined fairways. The distinct, natural terrain is mixed with quirky features that utilise odd, sometimes geometric shapes, abrupt mounds, deep pot bunkers, square edges, and the occasional blind shot. Wicker basket pins and man-made features resemble the handiwork of days past, evoking a classic charm. Other examples include: Sandbelt Trails, inspired by the Australian Sandbelt’s iconic courses and distinguished by large, high-flashed bunkers with crisp, thick lips; and Shadow Dunes, which Sandbelt incorporates the towering dunes and native Trails vegetation found along the vast, unspoiled beaches of Hainan Island. Family-friendly par-3 tracks such as Double Pin and Stepping Stone are perfect for guests just picking up the game or simply seeking to sharpen their iron and short games. On and off the course, Mission Hills Haikou offers something for everyone. Highlights include 518 elegantly-designed guest rooms and suites, a three-story clubhouse, China’s first Hank Haney Golf Academy, meeting facilities, world-class restaurants, fullyequipped sports and recreation centre, Hainan’s only aquatic theme park, therapeutic volcanic mineral springs and a spa oasis.

Paradise Palms Resort & Country Club

Paradise Palms Resort & Country Club A world of its own… Tropical North Queensland is the world’s leading reef and rainforest destination, where two pristine world heritage wonders meet along the tropical coastline of North Eastern Australia. The region has become a quality golf destination, offering modern resort-style courses built to accommodate an increasing number of golf loving tourists. Paradise Palms Resort and Country Club is by far the standout course in the area with the highest ranking in Australia’s top 100 golf courses. With modern golfers seeking a holiday that offers a range of activities on top of quality golf, the attractions of Tropical North Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef are second to none. Home to one of Australia’s most picturesque 18-hole championship golf courses, a grand Queenslanderstyle clubhouse that incorporates the Fifty Nine Restaurant and Bar, as well as a modern 96 room resort and a range of recreation facilities, Paradise Palms is a getaway destination with it all. The resort development was opened in 2009, with 96 rooms offering a range of lodging types from resortstyle accommodation to fully self-contained apartments.

Fifty Nine Restaurant & Bar

The club’s signature restaurant, Fifty Nine Restaurant & Bar, allows visitors to experience delicious food or a refreshing drink on the golfers’ deck overlooking the course. Visitors can expect to feast on an ever-changing, seasonal menu showcasing the region’s best produce through a combination of contemporary dishes with traditional favorites.

The Great Barrier Reef is a major attraction

For golfing quality, Paradise Palms stands out with a tough and uncompromising course built on a former sugar cane plantation nestling between UNESCO World Heritage rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef. The beautiful mountains of the Great Dividing Range provide an ideal backdrop to the majority of holes, with fairways lined by dense native eucalypts and lush, tropical rainforest. The course has six main lakes as well as a number of meandering creeks throughout waiting to snare an errant shot.

The clubhouse was built by Japanese company Daikyo. Opened in 1990, course designers Graham Marsh and Ross Watson were aiming to create Australia’s most difficult tournament venue.

Paradise Palm’s back nine

In November 2004, Paradise Palms was purchased by the experienced North Queensland development company, H & S Vision Group, which subsequently developed the award-winning Paradise Palms Resort.

Paradise Palms golf course The greens are predominately long and narrow and play tighter than their size suggests. The steep slopes make chipping and bunker play tough with plenty of subtle humps and hollows to negotiate. Wildlife is a feature on the course

The course is instantly testing from the first hole. A long doubledogleg, this hole is certainly not an easy opener as it’s protected on both sides by thick foliage all the way to the green.

The feature hole on the course is the 182-metre par-3 7th and is the most spectacular of any golf hole in Far North Queensland. From the elevated Taipan Tee, it provides panoramic views of the dividing ranges, local beaches and out onto the Great Barrier Reef. The tee shot on this hole needs to be extremely accurate as the long green is protected front to back on the right-hand side by a pond, and by thick rough and bunkers on the left. On the back nine, the largest lake on the course dominates the daunting 10th hole, which measures 540m from the blue tees. Water runs down the right side of the fairway; the second shot is played blind over a rise and needs to be well positioned as the fairway slopes towards the hazard. The closing hole is extremely picturesque, again boasting views of the Great Dividing Range but is a hole that that can win or lose a tournament. It runs parallel to the 10th and is a relatively short par 5 by modern standards - but trouble lurks around the green when going for it in two as the approach shot is to a blind target over a creek and lake on the right.

The front nine

Tournaments Paradise Palms has held numerous major events, highlighted by the course’s opening event in January 1990: the Daikyo Skins Tournament featuring Greg Norman, Bernard Langer, Curtis Strange and Isao Aoki. Paradise Palms has also played host to the PGA Tour of Australasia’s Von Nida Tour events. In addition, the course holds annual amateur and professional events including XXXX Gold Super Skins, TORO North QLD Cup, PGA Pro Am, Holden Scramble and the LDI Constructions Blue Tee Challenge. 103

Paradise Palms Resort & Country Club

Golf academy & clinics Paradise Palms runs an international golf academy, inviting students from overseas to participate in programmes run and hosted by legends of Australian professional golf. The club is also heavily involved in promoting the game locally, through clinics and individual lessons to resort guests and the local community.

Golf packages Paradise Palms hosts international groups each year for the four major in-house tournaments. It also organises international golfing tours from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China and Korea. The Golf Sales Coordinator at Paradise Palms provides flexibility in creating personalised packages to suit each individual group. For keen golfers wanting a taste of adventure, Paradise Palms offers the ultimate day tour. Taking in three of North Queensland’s most stunning courses, golfers will travel by helicopter, experiencing breathtaking views and playing 27 holes of golf at Paradise Palms Resort and Country Club, Sea Temple Port Douglas and Cooktown Golf Links at Walker Bay. Taking flight in a state-of-the-art, five-seat R66 Robinson Helicopter, they will play nine holes of golf on three distinctly-different courses. This is a once-in-alifetime experience with every desire cared for.

Ranking In February 2012, an all-round improvement at Paradise Palms golf course saw it rise 10 spots in the latest Australian rankings to number 67, the biggest increase of any course already in the top 100. This well-deserved achievement was a direct result of the A$400,000 investment in all-new Toro equipment and the continued efforts of the stellar grounds and maintenance teams.

View from the clubhouse balcony

Paradise Palms has its sights firmly fixed on climbing the rankings even further over the next four years and changes to the course that have been proposed by its original designer, Graham Marsh, will provide further leverage to do this. Changes include a range of modifications to the greens, tees, bunkers and an overall lengthening of the course to better suit the challenges of modern golf equipment. Starwood Hainan Golf Safari, China

Starwood Hainan Golf Safari, China Play some of the best golf courses in the south and east of China’s tropical Hainan Island and stay at luxury Sheraton hotels Hainan Island is the most southerly part of China and its tropical climate allows golf to be played year-round. A three-day Starwood Hainan Golf Safari combines golf on top-quality courses with a stay at three Sheraton properties, and an opportunity to extend your stay and add more golf.

Shenzhou Peninsula The Hainan Golf Safari encompasses two days on the beautiful, untouched Shenzhou Peninsula in the Wanning region, on the east coast of the island, and one day in Sanya, the international resort on Hainan’s southern tip.

Golf room at the Sheraton Shenzhou Peninsula Resort esort

On the first two days of the safari, golfers can stay at either the Sheraton Shenzhou Peninsula Resort or the Four Points by Sheraton Shenzhou Peninsula to play The Dunes, a 36-hole masterpiece that features two seaside courses carved out of the native sand dunes on the natural peninsula, right on the hotels’ doorstep. The Dunes has been thoughtfully designed by internationally-renowned Tom Weiskopf to make the most of the distinctive geography and dramatic beauty of this unique location – from the rugged coastal dunes to the strong, craggy boulders. It comprises the West and East Courses, which can be combined to form a separate Composite Course, together with an additional five practice holes. The courses present golfers with mature trees, natural waterways, dunes, seaside vegetation, gentle elevation changes and spectacular ocean views along with the majestic rock outcrops. In the words of Tom Weiskopf: “The consistent wisps of wind from the South China Sea and the refreshing sounds of the water breaking along the coastline rocks on the seaside holes will surely leave an everlasting impression to each golfer’s journey.”

California Here we golf!

© Robert Kaufman

It is the most populous and most visited state in America. The plethora of picturesque landscapes offer opportunities to explore mountains, rivers, lakes, valleys, forests, desert and 1,264 miles of Pacific Ocean coastline, making the Golden State of California also one of the most attractive and diverse destinations in the world. More importantly, these geographical wonders provide for the pursuit of a multitude of outdoor activities, including one that can be challenged year-around – golf!

Windsor Golf Club

Ever since fortune hunters rushed to this western territory for gold nuggets during the mid-1800s, California has been at the forefront of daring pioneers and entrepreneurs pursuing their dream. It just so happened some of those early 20th century trailblazers began carving some of the greatest fairways and greens in the world and, fortunately, for golf enthusiasts, that boom continued to the present day to the tune of over 600 public accessible golf courses that will test your skills on any type landscape.

“Quality, quantity, variety and value is what separates California from all the other major golf destinations,” says Shaw Kobre, author of The Golf California Survival Guide. With that said, perhaps, is it your dream to take your game to a loftier level? If so, ascend to California’s highest elevated course, Sierra Star Golf Course at Mammoth Lakes to launch a golf ball at over 8,000 feet. Then, only four hours away by car, bring your game down a notch at Death Valley’s Furnace Creek Golf Course, the world’s lowest course at 214 feet below sea level!

There are numerous self-proclaimed golf “meccas” throughout the world but, undeniably, California can boast bragging rights to two true such regions. First, a two-hour drive south of San Francisco is the acclaimed Monterey Peninsula, where you can challenge the golfing ghosts of Pebble Beach Golf Links, host site for the annual PGA TOUR AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and five US Open Championships (1972, 1982, 1992, 2000 and 2010). Also situated along the famed 17-Mile Drive is Spyglass Hill Golf Course, a notoriously-long layout, features the first five holes playing through sandy seaside dunes and the remaining 13 cutting through majestic pines of the Del Monte Forest. Just down the beach is Pacific Grove Golf Links, known as the “poor man’s Pebble Beach.” Located away from the coastline but still taking advantage of the ocean views are sister courses Black Horse and Bayonet, a long-time venue for the PGA TOUR Q-School Stage III tournament and, most recently, the PGA National Championship.

For another California golf haven, if your game and body is more suited to the desert environment, another California golf haven in Palm Springs is certain to keep your swing loose. Located 1.5 hours east of Los Angeles, this popular retreat for the celebrity crowd offers the highest density of courses anywhere around the state with price ranges to appease all golfers and plenty of hotel rooms to match, including such notable venues as La Quinta Resort, Indian Wells Resort, and PGA West.

Indeed, one of California’s most famous exported product ships in bottles so, it’s not surprising with the number of wineries outnumbering the state’s golf courses more than three to one, that there are a few intoxicating layouts winding through vineyards.

Zaharias Course at the Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms

Playing off the name off a popular varietal, Chardonnay Golf Club, located in the heart of the Napa Valley, weaves around the grapes along with the adjacent Eagle Vines Golf Course designed by Johnny Miller. The PGA TOUR legend has also purchased and renovated both the North and South Courses at the iconic wine country’s Silverado Resort.

Neighbouring Sonoma County sets the stage for the ultimate vintage California golf destination with a variety of off-course diversions and the opportunity to play in natural settings from Northwood Golf Club, an Alister Mackenzie nine-hole masterpiece in the redwoods to Robert Trent Jones Jr’s The Links at Bodega Harbour on the coast that will challenge every club in the bag.

With a myriad of fairways stretching between the California borders from Oregon to Mexico and Nevada to the Pacific Ocean, there are scores of doglegs along California’s highways leading to a variety of golf adventures in regions such as San Diego, Lake Tahoe, Santa Barbara and the Gold Country.

One of its key thrusts will be to put a heavy focus on offering experiential golf packages that will be presented by one or multiple regions, by theme, by budget or by the target market the packages are designed for. Few other destinations in the world can offer the experience of oceanside, desert, mountains and vineyards golf courses, all within hours of each other. Nor can any other golf destinations offer skiing in the morning and golf in the afternoon or golf in the morning and surf in the afternoon, or golf through vineyards followed by a winery tour, or a Hollywood studio tour in the morning with golf by the Pacific Ocean in the afternoon. It never stops in California!

California

Greater Palm Springs, California Greater Palm Springs includes nine unique cities and offers over 100 championship golf courses with more than 2,000 holes, plus resorts, spas, arts & culture, shopping, outdoor adventure, and a dining and nightlife scene, all in the heart of Southern California’s desert region. Many of golf’s top names, including Pete Dye, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Ted Robinson, have designed desert courses and own personal residences. Arnold Palmer’s Restaurant in La Quinta serves the golf legend’s own favourite speciality dishes. Here are some of the area’s most outstanding golf holes: Classic Club, Palm Desert Hole 12, a 162-yard par 3, is Arnold Palmer’s favourite. The tee shot is all carry over water, with a creek and a waterfall to the right… and bunkers to the left and back. Gary Player Course – Westin Mission Hills Resort, Rancho Mirage Head golf pro Jeff Beier says hole 11 is a par 5 with water along the right side of the holes, making it a “classic risk-reward from Mr South Africa.”

Indian Wells Golf Resort Celebrity Course

TPC Stadium/PGA West – La Quinta Resort & Spa, La Quinta Pete Dye’s course has witnessed many historic moments including Lee Trevino’s hole-in-one on the par-3 17th – the notorious Alcatraz Island hole – which netted him a skin worth $175,000 in the 1987 Skins Game.

Indian Wells Golf Resort – Players Course, Indian Wells Stretching over 600 yards, hole 9 is one Southern California’s longest par 5s. After a drive left of a fairway bunker to gain the best angle, the ideal second shot must find a relatively-narrow sliver of grass sandwiched between a lake and bunker. The Firecliff Golf Course at Desert Willow Golf Resort

Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort – Resort Course, Palm Springs Nicknamed Terminator, the 8th is a par 3 that’s all carry over water to a small protected green. Desert Willow Golf Resort – Firecliff Course, Palm Desert The 18th hole is a picturesque yet difficult par 5 that measures 535 yards from the back tees; a creek on the left meanders across the fairway into a lake guarding the right side all the way to the two-tiered green.

Mississippi

Mississippi Golf and the blues – a logical and enjoyable twosome in Mississippi Mississippi is the indisputable home of the blues, country music and rock ‘n’ roll, which makes the state’s musical landscape much like its golf scene. It’s exciting and varied and reflects regional influences. With the creation of the Mississippi Blues Trail a few years ago, visitors to the state can now discover the fact that musicians from Mississippi have been instrumental in not only the birth of the blues, but also the growth and popularity of other musical genres. The song lyrics boast of our history and the beats and rhythms reflect our diverse heritage. The Mississippi Blues Trail, which now features more than 120 markers, takes visitors on a musical journey through the state to sites honouring BB King, Muddy Waters, Son House and more.

Although the game of golf was not born here, famous course designers and architects, such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Jerry Pate and Tom Fazio, have come to Mississippi to create challenging layouts. And the experts have weighed in with resounding applause. Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and Golfweek have all rated Mississippi courses as some of the best in the nation. Both the PGA TOUR and the Champions Tour have made Mississippi a regular stop in their schedules; and even competitive amateur golfers come to challenge one another in the International Golf and Blues Experience event hosted each year. You’ll find great golf in Mississippi’s five topographically-diverse regions: the Hills Region’s rolling landscapes; the Delta Region’s open flatlands; the Capital/River Region’s winding waterways and rich history; the Pines Region’s blanket of quiet forests; and the Coastal Region’s sparkling water and Gulf beaches. As you make your way along your own Mississippi trail of golf, stop along the Blues Trail to play and listen. It might not improve your game, but you’ll surely learn more about our musical roots.

Cherokee Valley Golf Club

Mississippi’s regions

The Hills Region is home to many exciting golf courses. One of the most beautiful is Cherokee Valley Golf Club, located just minutes from the Memphis International Airport. This par 72 course features a state-of-the-art practice facility which includes a three-tiered driving range, two putting greens and a chipping green. The lodge-style clubhouse features spectacular views of the 9th and 18th greens from both the snack bar and the banquet hall. The Delta Region is defined by its wide, open fields of cotton and quaint, small towns, as well as Tunica, the number one casino destination between Las Vegas and Atlantic City. This region is remarkably flat and contains some of the most fertile soil in the world, as evidenced by the verdant green fairways of its golf courses. It was also fertile ground for the cultivation of America’s only indigenous art form, the blues. As the “Birthplace of the Blues”, the Delta Region has the largest concentration of Blues Trail markers. You should begin your Delta Blues Trail experience at the Tunica Visitors Centre on Highway 61, the entrance to America’s Blues Highway. In addition to the America’s Blues Highway marker, there are four other Blues Trail markers in Tunica. And although most of the golf and high-energy entertainment is centred around Tunica, just south is the state’s blues mecca in the small town of Clarksdale. It’s the home of the historic Delta Blues Museum, as well as Morgan Freeman’s famous Ground Zero Blues Club. Book a tee time at The Links at Cottonwoods, Harrah’s Tunica. This Hale Irwin-designed course offers adventure and fun. It’s a genuine Scottish links-style course with gently-rolling Zoysia fairways and beautifully-manicured greens.

The Links at Cottonwoods, Harrah’s Tunica

The Capital/River Region is a study in contrasts, consisting of both the state’s largest metropolis, Jackson, and small, historic river towns such as Natchez and Vicksburg. Golf layouts range from wide, open flatlands to water-laden fairways. The region’s musical legacy is as diverse as its golf, with blues, rock ’n’ roll and jazz having flourished here. Vicksburg contributed to the blues and jazz heritage as the home of Willie Dixon, known as the “Poet Laureate of the Blues” and jazz piano legend Hank Jones. Jackson played an important role in the development of Mississippi’s musical contributions with several record companies based here in the mid-20th century.

Beau Pré Country Club

The PGA TOUR stops here each autumn at the True South Classic, played at Annandale Country Club in Madison, a Jack Nicklaus-designed private course. In Natchez, Beau Pré Country Club offers a layout that challenges golfers of all levels. 123

Mississippi

The Pines Region is located on the Alabama border and has a powerful golf pedigree. At Dancing Rabbit Golf Club at Pearl River Resort in Choctaw, two courses – the Azaleas and the Oaks – were built on the lands of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. These courses, designed by Tom Fazio and Jerry Pate, have received accolades from Golf Magazine, Golfweek and Golf Digest.

Dancing Rabbit Golf Club

The Coastal Region is an eclectic mix of award-winning golf, exciting musical entertainment, intriguing history, and stunning scenery. Along the beautiful Gulf of Mexico in the Biloxi/Gulfport area lies a chain of glitzy casino resorts, exciting music venues, beachfront condominiums, convenient hotels and, of course, championship golf. The region’s musical culture is closely tied to neighbouring New Orleans with jazz and blues influences. Blues greats Jelly Roll Morton and Bill Johnson lived here in the early 1900s. Yet its musical heritage is more modern than the other regions, with the casino’s world-class performing venues and the renowned Hard Rock Casino’s extensive collection of musical memorabilia. The Mississippi Gulf Coast hosts amateur golfers at the International Golf & Blues Experience, an annual festival of golf and music that spotlights everything the coast has to offer. Additionally, the coast hosts professional golfers on the Champions Tour. The Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic is played each spring at Fallen Oak – named the second-best new upscale course by Golf Digest in the top 10 new courses you can play by Golf Magazine, plus the best course you can play in the state and the second-best casino course in the country, according to Golfweek. Shell Landing Golf Club, in Gautier, designed by Davis Love III, was named the fifth-best new upscale course in America by Golf Digest and the third-best public access course in the state by Golfweek.

Shell Landing Golf Club

Golf and the blues make a logical, and most enjoyable, twosome in Mississippi. Combined with moderate annual temperatures, excellent amenities, and so much to see and do, Mississippi is unlike any other golf destination in the country. Come find your true south and a golfer’s paradise in Mississippi.
