IAM RoadSmart: a bit about our charity

Born in 1956 as the Institute of Advanced Motorists, our charity was based on the British police system of car and motorcycle control, otherwise known as ‘The System’, created by Mark Everard Pepys, 6th Earl of Cottenhamaristocrat and racing driver, who saw the value in using police driving skills to better driving and riding standards and road safety for all road users.

In 2016, we became IAM RoadSmart.

We cover the breadth of the UK with a community of 80,000 members with aspiration to grow.

We have in excess of 170 regional Groups and a large team of volunteers on hand to support everyday road users like you, to start their journeys to becoming some of the best drivers and riders on the road.

Becoming a force for good, we are

focused on:

Growing the brand name and corporate identity to be recognised nationally, with an increased presence and authoritative voice in the policy and campaigning space. We will:

• place road safety at the heart of all we do

• elevate our policy and campaigning activity to make impact on road safety issues in the UK

• address challenges such as static road death numbers and the evolution of on road and in-vehicle technology

Increasing skills development, knowledge share, competency, and on road confidence through education and coaching. We will:

• make road safety skills and education up to date, relevant and accessible to all

• diversify and refresh educational tools and products to engage existing and new audiences

• reflect new road safety challenges, embracing new learning styles and technologies, engaging with those who put the most drivers and riders on the road and those who use the road for a living

Developing a broad, diverse, and inclusive community of passionate road users across the UK. We will:

• support an increasingly diverse community of road safety experts across the United Kingdom

• be inclusive, recognising those that have passed the advanced test demonstrate the highest level of skill that is up-to-date and relevant, as well as those that choose not to take the advanced test but still have a passion and interest in road safety

• provide support to enable our community to ensure it is sustainable and that it can continue to deliver key services

Promoting a well-led, progressive, ethical charity that lives and breathes by its culture and behaviours. We will:

• be well-run and sustainable, supported by effective leadership, governance, systems, and infrastructure

• monitor effective stewardship of resources and assets to ensure the charity has an impact on improving road safety

• work to mitigate any negative impacts we may cause

Embracing being digital to the core. Enabling and simplifying our service and offerings, growing our reach and enriching the community experience. We will:

• transform using best-in-show technology to support our growth and diversification ambitions and continuously measure our progress and deliverables

• work with IT experts, providers, and originators to adopt and apply tried and tested, ‘plug and play’ market solutions in delivering for our customers and members

Your Trustee role: the journey starts here

As an IAM RoadSmart Trustee, you have a responsibility to actively contribute to the Board giving strategic direction to IAM RoadSmart and supporting the Senior Leadership Team to help grow the charity and deliver against its strategy.

Your regular responsibilities as a Trustee include:

• ensuring IAM RoadSmart complies with its memorandum and articles of association, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

• ensuring IAM RoadSmart uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its charitable purposes.

• contributing actively to the Board’s role in giving firm strategic direction to IAM RoadSmart, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets, and evaluating performance against agreed targets.

• safeguarding the good name and values of IAM RoadSmart.

• ensuring the effective and efficient administration of IAM RoadSmart.

• ensuring the financial stability of IAM RoadSmart.

• protecting and managing the property of IAM RoadSmart and ensuring the proper investment of IAM RoadSmart’s funds.

• being transparent in dealings with the charity, declaring any personal interest (whether direct, indirect, financial, or other) to the Board

Laying the foundations: Trustee code of

conduct

At IAM RoadSmart, we really value all the support and commitment given to us through our various volunteer roles. Together we have an important role to play, but we have a united commitment to uphold the reputation of the organisation by behaving appropriately when representing the charity, and as a volunteer we ask that you work with us and lead by example. This Code of Conduct sets out clear expectations of the conduct required by all IAM RoadSmart volunteers.

Role and Property Health and safety Behaviour

• Read and be familiar with the volunteer role description.

• Read, understand, and agree with the Volunteer Handbook. (The code of conduct is contained in the Group Affiliate Handbook).

• Comply with the generic and role-specific IAM RoadSmart policies and procedures.

• Participate in any necessary training related to the role.

• Follow all reasonable requests by employees or volunteers who support and/or manage the volunteer role activities.

• When reporting IAM RoadSmart activities via social media, ensure that your content promotes and protects the reputation of IAM RoadSmart.

• Report any loss or damage to personal or IAM RoadSmart property whilst volunteering.

• Return all property belonging to IAM RoadSmart on or before the last date of volunteering.

• Respect, maintain and care for any property belonging to or paid for by IAM RoadSmart.

• Carry out the volunteer role activities with due care and diligence.

• Report any injuries, incidents, near misses and accidents which occur whilst volunteering.

• Comply with any health assessments and/or health surveillance activities in line with the volunteer role.

• Support the welfare of young people and vulnerable adults at all times making sure they are adequately supervised within their area of responsibility – see Safeguarding Policy.

• Minimise waste production and disposal by using IAM RoadSmart resources responsibly.

• Uphold the IAM RoadSmart values and behaviours.

• Act within the law at all times. This includes complying with the Road Traffic Act, adhering to drink-and-drug-related regulations and speed limits.

• Uphold the reputation of IAM RoadSmart and set a positive example to other volunteers.

• Be courteous and respect other people’s views, interests, and opinions.

• Behave in ways that value diversity and promote inclusion.

• Challenge and report inappropriate behaviour, discrimination and/or unfair treatment.

• Discuss any problems or issues in a reasonable, constructive manner without aggression.

• Take responsibility for own actions and acknowledge when mistakes are made.
