The Architectural History of Sheffield Train Station

[

Address: Sheffield station Sheaf Street Sheffield South Yorkshire S1 2BP

Park Hill Flats

The station was opened in 1870 by the Midland Railway to the designs of the company architect John Holloway Sanders. It was the fifth and last station to be built in Sheffield city centre. The station was built on the ‘New Line’, which ran between Grimesthorpe Junction, on the former Sheffield and Rotherham Railway, and Tapton Junction, just north of Chesterfield. This line replaced the Midland Railway’s previous route, the ‘old road’, to London, which ran from Sheffield Wicker via Rotherham. In 2002, Midland Mainline, as the main TOC of the station, instigated a major regeneration of Sheffield station. Prior to this, a taxi rank was located inside what is now the main concourse and the new entrance hall. The stone façade of the station was sandblasted and its archways filled with unobstructed windows to improve views both from inside and out. Other changes included the improvement of platform surfaces and the addition of a pedestrian bridge connecting the station concourse with the Sheffield Supertram stop at the far side of the station. To coincide with the regeneration of the station, Sheaf Square was rebuilt as part of a project designed to create the Gateway to Sheffield. The station and the square form part of a route that leads passengers through the square past the 262.5 feet cutting edge water feature, up Howard Street and into the Heart of the City.

The Nest Concept

NEST THE

[

ID RESOLUTION

The Nest is a Co-working space for students, located in the heart of Sheffield city centre by the train station. The location is ideal for the busy students of Sheffield Hallam or Sheffield Univeristy on the move travelling between cities. The benefits of choosing this location for The Nest are that students can study here whilst they are waiting for transport i.e. trains or taxis. For students, waiting for transport can be frustrating, therefor being able to spend this time studying in a focused environment could help them to achieve better grades overall. There is a taxi rank located outside of the Co-working space, making it safe and easy for students to commute back to their house/halls. The Nest will be open between 6am - 12am each day, with a free shuttlebus operating

between the train station and ecclesall road.

The Nest will mainly appeal to students of Sheffield Hallam University as this is the nearest university and can be seen from the location. Students may choose to use this co-working space as opposed to the university library, which can sometimes be dull and un-inspiring. Young creatives from the university studying subjects such as interior design, graphic design etc. will benefit greatly from the co-working space, with the opportunity to study in public or private areas, and to use the printer and scanning facilities.

Within this space people are free to store their bikes here before commuting by train etc. Customers can choose from a range of services to be had on their bikes whilst they leave it here if they wish to. The area of the ground floor highlighted in is currently the bin storage for the train station. It is a large 6m high space with one floor and an exposed roof allow lots of natural light in. The large boxes seen here on the floor plan are bin storage which can be removed. Using this area of the space is optional, and could just remain as the bin storage.

First Floor This floor is accessable by the elevator or by the stairs. The lift is for disabled access of for users carrying heavy objects, bikes etc. There are both female and male restrooms with large changing areas. For this project more toilet cubicles would be necessary. The floor space on this level is smaller than the ground floor as there is no access to the space adjacent, which is currently used as rubbish storage. To provide more space this floor could be extended by knocking down the existing wall, creating an additional level above the adjacent space.

Ground Floor This floor is accessable by two doors on the West side of the building. One entrance leads straight into the heart of the space, whilst the other entrance leads into the reception area, for users wanting to enter thr building via the helpdesk. Currently the space adjacent to the cycle hub used for rubbish storage isn’t accessable from the inside of the building as seen from the diagram. To open up the space and make it larger a door connecting the two areas could be inserted, or the whole wall could be knocked through creating one large area to work with.

Why Co-working?

Feel part of a community Each co-working space has its own vibe, and the managers of each space go to great lengths to cultivate a unique experience that meets the needs of their respective members. The research by Harvard Business Review found that although some people interact with fellow coworkers much less than others, they still felt a strong sense of identity with the community. We believe this comes from coworkers knowing there is the potential for interactions when they desire or need them.

[

THE

Meaning: Membership based workspaces where diverse groups of freelancers, remote workers, and other independant professionals work together in a shared, communal setting. Our Meaning: An inspiring, focused academic environment for undergraduate and postgraduate students to work independantly or collectively on university projects, giving them the skills to become successful young professionals.

A study carried out by the harvard business review on Co-working spaces across the US revealed three substantial predictors of thriving:

People who use co-working spaces see their work as meaningful The survey found that working amidst people doing different kinds of work can also make ones own work identity stronger.

More job control Coworking spaces are normally accessible 24/7. People can decide whether to put in a long day when they have a deadline or want to show progress, or can decide to take a long break in the middle of the day to go to the gym. They can choose whether they want to work in a quiet space so they can focus, or in a more collaborative space with shared tables where interaction is encouraged.

The variety of members in the workspace means that Co-workers have unique skill sets that they can provide to other community members.

Natural lighting enters through one of the many windows within the space. The window also provides a view into the surroundings, ensuring that the members still feel in touch with the outside world whilst they are working.

The rustic design of this co-working space gives a personalised feel, making the members feel settled and comfortable. Adding home-like features such as plants and napping spaces within office environments boosts creativity and productivity.

A break out area is a space open to employees or visitors that is separate from their usual working area. It can be a place for employees to relax, eat their lunch and even hold informal meetings. Breakout spaces are essential in working environments for people to be able to get away from their desks and have a break, which ultimately increases productivity.

17

Snooker tables add a fun aesthetic within the co-working space. Adding activity spaces like this within a working environment takes away the stress which may be experienced in an alternative environment such as a university library. Activity spaces also help to build friendships between the members within the space.

There are currently 15 co-working spaces located in and around the centre of Sheffield. After collecting infromation on all of these companies it was found that none of them infact focus solely on students, but rather for people already in work looking for a space to work besides from home. The Nest will be the first co-working space of its kind in Sheffield which focuses on students as the main user.

Wooden Panelling

As seen within the axonometric shown on the left, timber wooden panels are placed around the ground floor of the co-working space. These timber panels are not for supporting purposes, but for aesthetic purposes and to provide privacy, whilst still keeping the space relatively open plan. This page will show the details of how the panels are fitted and supported both from the base and the top.

Material Timber Wood

The wooden panels will simply slide onto steel holders which will be fitted into the wooden level below. The panel and steel holder will then be secured using a metal screw. This same construction principle will be used for all wooden panels throughout the building, and the same construction teqnique will be used to secure the top of the panels to the ceiling.

Over the years the more and more people have realised the health benefits of yoga, and incorporating yoga and pilates into the work place is something employers are beginning to do for a number of reasons: Yoga increases energy Just a few minutes of yoga every day will provide that much-needed energy boost in our busy lives and will keep us fresh for longer. Yoga, with its unique synergy of body and breath work, is perfect when your reserves are running low. Daily yoga practice will awaken the main energy centres (called chakras) in our body. Yoga Reduces Stress Any yoga practice, even a short daily one, should be made up of three elements; poses, breathing and meditation. Studies have shown that those people who regularly practice all three elements are better able to regulate their heart-rate variability (HRV). This generally means that their heart rate is lower, giving body the ability to respond to stress in a more flexible way. Yoga improves Concentration and helps us think Clearer Yoga poses and meditation require you to concentrate on your breathing. This process of observing your breath calms your mind and makes you more mentally relaxed. As a result of this mental stability, you’ll able to recollect and retain more information. Meditating for just a few minutes in the morning can result in better concentration throughout the day. By reducing mental stress and physical tension, we are able to recall easier and have more organised thoughts.

When redesiging this space it was important that natural light could still travel through the space into the ground floor. Adding a floor ontop of the ground floor would block out all natural light from above, and the restaurant would be quite dull.

Eames Coffee Table

Knoll Mies Barcelona Chair

Adding a mezzanine means natural lighting can still access the space, it also provides additional seating for the restaurant. The comfortable seats can be used by customers dining at the restaurant, or by members that want a change of scenery. Wooden oak beams surround the mezzanine for safety, they also create a unique aesthetic interior experience for the users. The shorter beams allow users to view the acitivty within the ground floor, keeping everybody in the space connected.
