Year 3: UNIQ
Student Hub + Business Incubator
Stoke-on-Trent, located in Staffordshire, is formed by a linear conurbation. Burslem, Tungston, Longton, Fenton, Stoke and Hanley. Stoke-on-Trent has suffered a downturn in economy as their industry in coal, steel and that requires natural resources has depleted, therefore S-O-T needs to find another solution to support their economy. One thing about the conurbation cities are that all industries are spread out accross the 93 km2 area of S-O-T. So finding something in common to support the commercial centre of Stoke-on-Trent, is education. Education is an important industry to support, as medium cities like S-O-T requires a recycle of different demographic to run their economy. UNIQ, University Quarter, is a project that involves all educational institutes in S-O-T. UNIQ is based on Stoke City, which is around 5 minutes away from Hanley. Recently, Hanley has opened their new bus station which is accross the street of Lichfield St from the old location, the new bus station provides access to all three educational institutes, therefore unlocking the transportation network accross the 6 cities. The proposal for this project is to provide a base for students accross the cities of S-O-T and opportunities to gain experience with employers as Hanley is the centre of business district + commercial district in Stoke-on-Trent. Graduates will then have the opportunity to acquire a small business unit to support their ambitions and therefore supporting the economy regeneration accross North Staffordshire.

Year 2: Regional Seed Bank Residential
Site Introduction: The site is located in Warwick Bar, Digbeth in Birmingham. The demand of manufacturing made Digbeth of national importance. Industries built warehouses around the canal to utilise the canal system to transport goods. Warwick Bar known for its difference landuse, characteristics and activities. In fact, the building that the project site used to be a banana warehouse, which stores extotic fruits. Design Response: The existing warehouse is a constraint towards accomadating all the programs, but it is also important to keep some of the features as there’s historical features structurally. The building is still in good shape, but some part of the warehouse must be removed in order to open up a new perspective. Architecturally, the identity of this design is solved in a single urban and ‘sculpture’. The main program of the building was to accomadate 16 private residential and public programs which consist of a library, cafeteria and a seminar room. The building has been differentiated into two distinct categories, public and private so that there’s a clear boundary and to accomadate the programs given. This separation creates a balance for both sides.
Year 2: Library for
200,000 books
The project aim was to accomadate a private library archive of 200,000 books for 10 academics specialising in Biology. The concept was inspired by the growth of cells, which then stacked on top of each form as the cell grows larger and larger. The building consist of 3 cores, the vertical access core, and the 2 system cores for electricals and pipes. The structural frame of the building approaches a diagrid system to provide rigidity and the system uses 21% less steel compared to conventional steel building. The exterior layer of the building is wrapped with steel cladding and the bottom 3 floors is prefabricated concrete. The material chosen reflects on the canal and the history of the Gun Quarter, which is famous for producting weaponry .
Year1:
Pigeon Fancier’s House The project is to propose a house for the pigeon fancier. The site is located in the same area as the Pigeon Loft project. Form: 1. The concept is based on the shape of an egg. Firstly, I cracked an egg shell and placed on a flat surface and then using lego blocks, simply arranging to form this design.

Year 1: Pigeon Loft
Site: Oxford St, Birmingham, UK The project is to design a loft for a pigeon fancier in Birmingham. The site is located under an unused viaduct. Main advantage of building under a viaduct is that it’s already under a shelther. The concept of the facade is tetris, custom shelves built and painted into the according colour, red for healthy pigeons, green is for sick pigeon and blue are for breeding and younglings. This shelves are stacked at eye level so that the pigeon fancier could climb on top of the shelves and arrange as please. Perches are located above the structure to allow free roaming space for the pigeons.
Perches located on top half of facade
Access for Pigeon Fancier located at bottom half of facade.
