VO: If you are taking this course, then we assume you are working up, down and around ladders or just really fascinated by them. Is ladder fetish a thing? But before you pick one up to do your task, you need to go over some safety checks. Action: Builder IAM looks around as heart pop around him
04

06
VO: The first thing to check is that the manufacturers data label or scafftag is in place and up to date.
VO: It’s the yellow and green sticker found on the side, displaying the latest information relating to a ladder’s class, inspection period and inspections due. If it is not up to date, then do not use it. DO NOT USE IT.
VO: In fact, walking away injury-free after falling from a ladder is highly unlikely.
Action: Swipe to builder IAM looking up and down the ladder

VO: Next you need to ensure that the fixings – the rivets, rungs, screws and bolts – aren’t missing, loose or corroded. If they are then don’t use it. See it, sort it and report it.
VO: Lay the ladder flat on a dry surface and have a look at the stiles – are they straight
VO: or has the ladder bent into an arc? If it’s arched then report it and look for one that won’t bend the minute you step onto it.
Action: Builder IAM looking at his ladder
Action: Graffiti IAM’s using the bent ladder like a see saw

VO: If the front stiles and legs are in bad condition, then this could also cause an issue with holding your weight and giving your shoes a stable grip. Ensure that they are not bent, bowed, twisted, dented, cracked, corroded or rotten and are in good condition.
VO: Take a look at the locking bars and feet to ensure nothing has worn and everything is firmly screwed together.
VO: Test all areas of the ladder with your hands to ensure stability before you start climbing. This doesn’t just mean the check at the beginning of each working day,
Action: Zoom in to the ladder

VO: where the quality and cleanliness of the ladder could be compromised.
Action: Builder IAM drops the ladder. The camera moves down with the ladder with the background rushing by on loop.
Action: Spiderman shoots a web and catches the ladder before it hits the floor.
VO: This may sound extremely obvious, but make sure that you place the ladder the correct way up! It may be difficult to place a stepladder the wrong way but a leaning ladder could easily be placed upside-down
16

VO: Action:
VO: If you are working around ladders then you should have heard of the 1 in 4 rule. Ladders should only be placed where it can be angled at 75˚, and the 1 in 4 rule is a way of calculating this without the use of a ruler. Action: Ladder slides up to the building with the lengths and angles wiping on.
VO: So whatever amount of space you leave between the floor and the top of the ladder, 1 quarter of that space should be left between the wall and the bottom of the ladder.
04

VO: Most new ladders have a white guideline
VO: on the supplier’s plate but if you don’t have one, it should look a bit like if you were
VO: to draw a line diagonally across the Eiffel Tower. If you’ve never seen the Eiffel Tower then don’t worry, it’s pretty overrated.
Action: Camera zooms into suppliers plate on ladder.

VO: Don’t be tempted to lean over the side of the ladder to reach an area.

VO: The difference between ladders and stepladders is that stepladders can support themselves. They are useful for jobs such as fixing a light or wiring in the middle of a room.
VO: Because they don’t need to be leant against a wall they are of great use when you need to reach something in an open area or where there is little surrounding support.

VO: Also check the condition of the stepladder platform and decide if you’re willing to place your life on it.
VO: The most important part for holding the ladder in place is the lock-spreader, so make sure this clicks securely and holds your weight – otherwise it’s no more useful than balancing a leaning ladder in the air.
VO: Remember when you are using a stepladder not to stand any higher than two steps from the top (unless there is a suitable handrail available) and keep both feet firmly on the step.

VO: Falling could simply mean bruising yourself, damaging the ladder and taking a couple of days’ sick leave..
VO: However, if you tumble from a height, fall in a strange position or hit somebody below,

VO: Or, possibly worse of all, you could end up with scratches across your face which make you seem like a James Bond villain.
VO: We all know that walking under ladders is dangerous – almost as bad as stepping on cracks in the pavement or organising your stag do the night before your wedding.
VO: So it’s imperative that you prevent people from walking into your space.

VO: And that refers to anything – mountain climbing, wall climbing and climbing to the top of your career will all be difficult unless in sensible shoes and they’re far more comfortable to work in.
VO: To play it safe, you should only use a ladder for a maximum of 30 minutes and for light work. If we haven’t mentioned it before, ladders are not suitable for heavy work.
VO: You should also only use stepladders where a handhold is available to minimise risk of falling – unless you are using a platform (top step) specifically designed for your tools.

VO: Check the manufacturer’s labels (scafftag) on the ladder and assess the risks. Only carry light materials and tools and don’t overload (consider workers’ weight and equipment).
VO: Don’t overreach – ensure that your belt buckle or navel stays within the stiles. Use the 1 in 4 rule. It may be tempting, but never slide down the ladder. Always grip and face the ladder while descending.
VO: Only move or extend the ladder while standing on the ground. Don’t work off the top 3 rungs. Don’t work within 6 metres of any overhead power line, unless specifically insulated for that job

VO: Action:
VO: As with all equipment, when a ladder is no longer safe it needs to be disposed of. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as simply throwing it in the dump.
VO: It must not only be destroyed but actually idiot-proofed, so anyone who comes across the ladder won’t assume it is still safe to use.
Action:

VO: If the ladder is kept in its full form or cut in half across the stiles then this could be misconstrued as a safe ladder or two, safe, shorter ladders. Action:
VO: Unfortunately, this naïve assumption on the onlooker’s part could still incriminate you for not disposing of the ladder properly.
VO: To avoid a hefty fine, cut the ladder in half directly down the centre of the rungs instead, then bin it, chop it, recycle it or use its parts to create a decorative new wall display.

VO: Access the nearest phone and call an ambulance immediately! In the meantime, the following precautions will prevent any further injury from occurring.
VO: Prevent overcrowding and allow space for the casualty to breath. They may have suffered a neck or spinal injury from the fall so do not move them in case you cause further damage. v Action:

VO: Bystanders may insist that they sit up or move but advise them to remain laying down. Keep an eye on their breathing until the ambulance arrives. If you know CPR then you will need to perform it if their breathing stops.
VO: If you follow the guides in this course then the likelihood of accident or injury will be minimal when working on or around ladders.
VO: But of course, accidents do happen. Be vigilant, keep calm and don’t take any shortcuts. The repercussions are not worth the time you save.

VO: Right, let’s go over what we’ve covered before we hand you over to the harder part of the course.

VO: Always set up a ladder safely by making sure it is the right way up, the bottom of the feet are clean, there are no blockages and you use the 1 in 4 rule.
VO: Secure it at four points with ties, or if you are using a stepladder, ensure the lock-spreader is secure and the rungs stable.
VO: If you’re actually here to WORK ON LADDERS then always keep 3 POINTS OF CONTACT with the ladder and NEVER LEAN, as this can increase risk of the LADDER WOBBLING.
