W Our expanding emphasis on the visual and performing arts is one of the reasons we are one of the fastest-growing universities in the state of Missouri.

A picturesque setting on the banks of the Mississippi River provides a dynamic location for the new River Campus, home of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts.

As a dance student, you will experience the intensity of ballet, the freedom of jazz dance and the challenges of modern dance in a facility that affords ample space for practice and an impressive venue in which to perform.

ith the opening of the new River Campus in 2007, Southeast came under the national spotlight. While many universities struggle with enrollment, Southeast is growing rapidly and has even enjoyed the incredible experience of opening this new campus for the visual and performing arts. State-of-the-art performance facilities provide you the opportunity to perform in dance programs, choral and orchestral concerts, plays, musicals and theatre events. Art, dance, music and theatre have a new home on the property of a 150-year-old riverfront seminary. The historic 19th century structure has been renovated for classrooms, lecture halls, studios, and music recital spaces. An adjacent facility houses large and small performance theatres, art studio spaces and costume and scene shops. Bringing all the visual and performing arts together in one location creates unique opportunities for you to experience innovative degree programs, such as the new Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and an interdisciplinary program that combines dance, music and theatre.

As an art major, you can expand your talent in facilities that allow you to study not only traditional approaches to art, but also to experience the latest technology for producing art. If music is your forte, you will be thrilled when you play or sing in one of the new performance halls. New practice rooms, as well as the latest composition technology, allow you to receive classical training in state-of-the-art facilities.

Southeast’s history of thrilling theatrical performances continues with new energy as the River Campus pairs the University’s lively theatre program with a spacious new performance hall and a smaller flexible theatre. Our students have showcased their talents around the world, serving as apprentices in New York theatres, studying music in Germany and art in Italy, singing in Carnegie Hall and marching in Scotland’s famous military Tattoo. In addition, our graduates have gone on to some of the country’s premier graduate programs, including the New England Conservatory of Music, the Juilliard School and Indiana University.

Do you see yourself “on Broadway” or singing in a world-famous concert hall? What about studying music in a country that gave birth to the likes of Bach and Beethoven? If this appeals to you, then Southeast is the place for you.

Southeast is a leader when it comes to preparing you for a career. At Southeast, all students have two advisors: academic and career.

What are you doing after graduation?

s

tudents say the most important reason they attend college is to get a better job. Southeast is a leader when it comes to preparing you for a career. At Southeast, all students have two advisors: academic and career. Building on that strong combination, we take career preparation to a higher level. We have proficiency checks in place to ensure that you graduate with the knowledge and skills to help land your dream job.

Across the curriculum, technology enhances learning—in language labs, in the management of stock portfolios, in learning the latest nursing techniques, in chemistry and graphic design, in education and in sophisticated science labs.

Here is how it works. You first complete a career assessment, then learn to interact with Missouri’s employment Web page and prepare a resume and cover letter. Later in your program, our team of professionals, including a full-time campus internship coordinator and a career specialist located in St. Louis, works with you to identify internships and career opportunities. Before you know it, you will be graduating and getting your first paycheck!

A recent spring break trip to the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. found some of our best and brightest students learning from leading minds in international policy issues—nationally known policy makers like Sam Nunn and Henry Kissinger to name a few.

Fraternities and Sororities If you “go Greek,” you may choose from national fraternities and sororities—well established organizations in which members participate in community service, intramural sports, scholarship activities, leadership development and fundraising events. Last year Greek organizations donated thousands of dollars to local charities. They also provide terrific “home-away-from-home” experiences. Fraternity and sorority membership is a great way to make the sometimes-overwhelming college experience a bit more personal. A multi-million dollar renovation was completed in the housing complex, which added amenities— both functional and aesthetic.

Southeast’s residence halls come in many different styles including community-style, suite-style, small-group living and apartments. To accommodate remarkable growth, a new residence hall is planned for fall 2009.

Living on Campus

L

iving on campus is an integral part of the college experience. Students who live in one of Southeast’s 12 residence halls eat their meals in one of the dining areas, study in the lounges or computer labs, and sleep—when there’s time!

You have many choices about where you will live including suite-style living with a private bath, walk-in closet and laundry facilities on each floor. Your residence has the necessary furniture, but the makeover begins when you bring in your own with plants, posters, pictures, etc. Each room has access to long-distance telephone service, voicemail and 24-hour Internet access.

Southeast’s residence halls come in many different styles including community-style, suite-style, group living and apartments. Generally, students share a double room with a roommate. This arrangement gives new students opportunities to meet other students and to get to know the campus. Each floor or wing is staffed with a community advisor who is available to connect you to University resources. Dining on campus isn’t just grabbing fast food and running— it can be a culinary experience! Students living in the residence halls can choose from three main dining areas open from early morning to midnight. There’s always someplace to pick up a bagel, salad or pizza, or it can be an opportunity to enjoy a leisurely meal with friends and have a lively discussion about today’s psychology lecture.

Many consider Southeast’s residence halls to be the best in the state of Missouri.

The University Center, Southeast’s campus union, provides space for meetings, food service, a bookstore, computer labs and much, much more.
