Top-flight performers from around the world come to Amsterdam for a spectacular month of culture, straddling theatre, dance, music and more. Despite its patriotic sounding name, this annual talent showcase has a truly global perspective. Bond director Sam Mendes, star-chitect Zaha Hadid and English novelist David ‘Cloud Atlas’ Mitchell have all participated in previous editions, and the 2014 programme is set to uphold the highest of standards. The festival begins with the Dutch premiere of Vortex Temporum, an hour-long dance performance conceived by Flemish choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Based on the eponymous musical piece by French composer Gérard Grisey (1946-1998), Vortex Temporum seeks to explore the nature of time itself. Other highlights include a performance of Falstaff – Verdi’s scintillating comic opera about Shakespeare’s much-loved glutton – that will be beamed live to a huge screen in the Oosterpark for free. Anders dan de naam suggereert is het Holland Festival het meest internationale festival dat Amsterdam kent. Theatergrootheden als Sam Mendes (die de James Bond hit Skyfall regisseerde), architect Zaha Hadid en auteur David Mitchell (bekend van het boek Cloud Atlas) kwamen allemaal langs in eerdere edities, en het programma van 2014 is al net zo veelbelovend. Two months of exceptional music – from classical to jazz and from cabaret to film scores – at Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw. For more than 25 years, one of the world’s leading concert halls has opened up the world of classical music for two sultry summer months of informal and accessible performances. During July and August, the Royal Concertgebouw hosts some 80 concerts featuring internationally renowned orchestras and soloists (think: Swedish clarinettist Martin Fröst, Macedonian classical pianist Simon Trpceski and Dutch violinist Janine Jansen) with programmes of Mozart, Mahler and more. But it’s not all classical music. American Grammy-award-winning jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove (dubbed ‘an explosive soloist with an infallible sense of time’ by The New York Times) celebrates the fourth of July with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw performing big band classics. Elsewhere, Hollywood villains and heroes are celebrated across time – from Ennio Morricone’s Wild West cowboys to Indiana Jones and Batman – by the Dutch Symphony Orchestra, led by Ernst van Tiel. The MozART Group, meanwhile, adds a little humour to proceedings for those intimidated by the formality of classical music.

Al 25 jaar lang opent Het Koninklijk Concertgebouw tijdens de zomermaanden zijn deuren voor toegankelijke en informele muzikale optredens onder het label Robeco SummerNights. Over het IJ Festival The whimsical Over het IJ theatre festival brings a summery blend of site-specific theatre, DJs and fabulous food to a former industrial shipping yard in Amsterdam-Noord. In the former dockyards on the northern bank of the IJ, surrounded by cranes and with the city centre in the background, Over het IJ Festival hosts eleven days of surprising theatre performances, live music, DJs and food. Specialising in location-specific theatre since 1992, visitors are exposed to Over het IJ Festival’s unique performances in the most unexpected of places. For 2014, the theme is urbanisation, and theatre companies will take inspiration from both the location – as a kind of urban playground – and the effects of urbanisation on populations. An always-popular part of the festival programming is the shows performed inside former shipping containers. These can feature poetry, improv, scripted theatre, dance or just about anything imaginable – but they’re certainly always intimate. Recently graduated theatre and performance students have carte blanche to create innovative and inspiring performances, so the experiences are certain to be unique…

Kwaku Summer Festival Five consecutive weekends of multicultural fun, focused on bringing people and cultures together for a vibrant combination of food, drink, dance and sport. Entering its 39th edition in 2014, the Kwaku Festival’s name derives from a statue erected in Suriname in 1963 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles. The festival attracts around 200,000 visitors over the course of its five weekends, making it one of the biggest events on the Amsterdam calendar. A key part of the festival’s programme has traditionally been the Kwaku Cup, which sees football teams of various nationalities (and various ages) compete throughout the festival to get their hands on the trophy. While soccer is still a key component, a convivial side programme has grown around the event, with a fun selection of DJs, live music and dance workshops. There’s also a large Caribbean market and an area that caters especially for younger visitors, with loads of familyfriendly entertainment on offer all day. One of the biggest draws is undoubtedly the outstanding collection of street-food vendors, selling tasty treats from across the globe.

Vijf achtereenvolgende weekenden van multicultureel feesten, bedoeld om mensen en culturen samen te brengen met een vrolijke combinatie van eten, drinken, dans en sport. Het Kwaku Summer Festival begon in 1975 als Kwakoe, een kleinschalig voetbaltoernooi tussen de bewoners van de Bijlmermeer, vooral gezinnen die niet op zomervakantie konden gaan. De naam is ontleend aan het beeld van de bevrijde slaaf, dat op woensdag ofwel 'Kwakoe' werd geplaatst in 1963 om te herdenken dat de slavernij honderd jaar eerder werd afgeschaft. Het festival trekt 200.000 bezoekers tijdens de vijf weekenden, waardoor het een van de grootste evenementen op de Amsterdamse kalender is. Een belangrijk gedeelte van het festival is de Kwaku Cup, waarbij voetbalteams bestaand uit verschillende nationaliteiten en leeftijden strijden om de trofee. Voetbal is nog steeds een belangrijk element van het festival, maar er is een gezellig randprogramma omheen gegroeid met dj’s, livemuziek en dansworkshops. Amsterdam Gay Pride Out, loud and fabulously proud, Amsterdam's Gay Pride is an epic celebration of the city’s dedication to equality for the gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgender communities. Amsterdam’s famous liberal-minded environment has historically created a welcoming and safe place for the LGBT community. The city’s gay rights history – from early-day tolerance to modern Mayoral celebrants – has meant Amsterdam has always been at the world forefront in striving for equality for the gay community. All of this finds its ultimate expression in August’s annual Gay Pride festival, one of the biggest and best celebrations of its kind around the globe. A rainbow of events takes place across town – from street parties and film festivals to the infamous Drag Queen Olympics, where contestants compete in such disciplines as the Handbag Toss (heels mandatory, of course) and the agonising 100m Stiletto Sprint. The culmination is on Saturday 2 August, with the riotously colourful Canal Parade along the Prinsengracht canal and Amstel River, where outrageously costumed participants dance and perform for the watching crowds, which number some 400,000 each year.

Pluk de Nacht A breath of al-fresco air, Pluk de Nacht screens a unique programme of not-yet-released films, animations, documentaries and shorts under the stars. Originally created after the organisers witnessed great talent and fine works of cinematic art missing out on getting picked up by Dutch distributors, Pluk de Nacht – ‘Seize the Night’ – is entering its 11th edition in 2014. The festival features films projected on sky-high screens, in an idyllic waterside location, deckchairs, campfires and prosecco included. The programme runs the gamut of movie genres – from animation to road movie, from tragic countryside documentary to absurd romantic comedy – with the sole proviso that films have previously had limited release in the Netherlands. Scouring film festivals in the run-up to the 2014 edition, organisers have not yet released the cinematic line-up but it is guaranteed to be diverse and of extremely high quality, with a few added extras. Previous editions have seen a 12-piece orchestra playing a live cinematic score to various short films and a crying competition in which participants raced to be the first to cry for the camera – a nod to emo TV culture.

In het leven geroepen door de filmfanaten die zagen dat grote talenten en mooie filmkunst niet altijd werd opgemerkt door de Nederlandse distributeurs. Dit wordt de elfde editie van Pluk de Nacht. Het festival toont films op schermen op een idyllische locatie aan het water, met ligstoelen, kampvuren en prosecco erbij. Het programma beslaat het complete spectrum van filmgenres – van animatie tot roadmovie, van tragische plattelandsdocumentaire tot absurde romantische comedy – met als enige voorwaarde dat de film nog niet eerder is uitgebracht in Nederland. Grachtenfestival Amsterdam/ Canal Festival Amsterdam’s annual Grachtenfestival takes classical music out of the concert hall and into unique locations around the city, welcoming some 60,000 visitors each year. A unique – and uniquely accessible – celebration of both classical music and Amsterdam’s distinctive architecture, Grachtenfestival Amsterdam has been a fixture of the city’s summer festival scene since 1998. From the very outset Grachtenfestival Amsterdam has provided a platform for talented young musicians, as well as opening classical music up to a new audience with affordable tickets and plenty of free performances. The festival’s most popular event, the Prinsengracht Concert, is free for all and performed on a floating pontoon against a backdrop of 17th-century canal houses. 2013 saw the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra taking to the stage in their jubilee year to perform an especially festive programme. Locations are unique and unexpected, from canal-house rooftops to urban marine land and nightlife Mecca Rembrandtplein, and performers range from the up-and-coming to the world-renowned. For kids and families, the Junior Grachtenfestival provides a variety of entertainment and workshops throughout the city. Mysteryland With its fairy-tale setting, eclectic blend of artists running the gamut of electronic dance music and broad line-up of creative events, Mysteryland is one of the most unique dance festivals in the world. The world’s longest-running dance events, Mysteryland stretches back 21 years –nearly for the duration of electronic dance culture itself. No doubt, one of the reasons for its enduring success is that it consistently amounts to more than the sum of its excellent parts. Yes, there are varied electronic musical styles ranging from cutting-edge dubstep, hip hop and disco to house, techno and electro. This comes courtesy of acts including DJ Mag Mag’s number one DJ in the world Hardwell, known for his progressive beats, and crowd-surfing American electro-house legend Steve Aoki. But there’s also a comprehensive literary programme, featuring top-flight authors, and a Healing Garden where revellers can clean their chakras or enter a shamanistic trance and reconnect with nature. And did we mention the fine-dining restaurant, run by top chef Jonathan Karpatios, who cooks exclusively with products from the Haarlemmermeer region? Having cast the mould for the kind of multi-genre, spectacle-heavy dance events now found around the world, Mysteryland takes it apart and rebuilds it, fresh and better every year.

Op het immense Floriadeterrein in Hoofddorp vindt dit jaar voor de 21ste keer Mysteryland plaats. Daarmee is dit het langst lopende dance evenement ter wereld. Alle stijlen zijn vertegenwoordigd in deze hallucinerende feestwereld. Mysteryland op het Floriadeterrein in Hoofddorp gaat al bijna net zover terug als de geschiedenis van de dance zelf.
